History: This area of Lakeside was once known as Chikaming and was not settled as soon as some of the other areas. Between 1847 and 1854 three brothers, John W., James and Joseph N. Wilkinson came from Virginia and went to Clark County, Indiana then on to New Buffalo, Michigan. James was the physician in the family and his brothers, John and Joseph decided to go into the lumbering business. In about 1854 the J W Wilkinson Company settled the area. An immense business was carried on for several years and one of the railroad stops became known as Wilkinson's station.

The second settler thought to be Richard Peckham. In the late 1850's the area finally acquired the name of Lakeside. The Wilkinson's at one point owned 2,500 acres in the area. And in the 1887Chikaming township, in Berrien County atlas, the cemetery, today known as Lakeside Cemetery, sat on their property in the border of Section 20. The original older portion of the cemetery is on the East side of the road and is 4 acres. The newer sections is about 2 acres in size and burials commenced there in about 1984 per notes from Theresa O'Riley.

In comparison to some of the older cemeteries in the county, this is one of the cemeteries not really in existence until the 1850's. As many cemeteries, this cemetery probably grew out of the need of necessity as the nearest cemetery would be several miles away. Below is our list in progress of the mostly older burials within. Information was gathered from: researcher donations, family records, old archaic burial listings, death certificates and obituaries.
Researched by: Deanna West with assistance from William Bracket.
