| Pvt. James S. Chase,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Serene Chase, 810 Weld street, Benton Harbor, was killed on
May 1, 1944 on Okinawa while fighting with the 27th division, according to a
telegram received by his wife, Lois, on June 24. Also survived by a son Ronald
James. James was born in Saginaw June 11, 1921. Married Lois J. Schwennesen. Drafted Nov 12, 1943, he trained at Camp Roberts. Calif., with the infantry. See below about remains being sent home. |

Willett S. Chinery 23, St. Joseph infantryman - killed April 11, 1945 on
Okinawa, the War department today informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willett S.
Chinery of 59 Lake Shore drive. Inducted in Princeton, N. J., Aug 1, 1943. Graduate St. Joseph High school 1932. Born Springfield, Ohio Sept 29, 1924 - lived most of his life in St. Joseph. See below about remains being sent home. |

| Probst, Floyd Sidney Ardie "Bud", Army Air Corps,
Bombadier Division. Son of Gottlieb & Hedwig "Hattie" (Yetzke) Probst Married Barbara Kay Bridges, 20 August 1947, Coloma. Born: 24 November 1922, Benton Harbor. Died: 30 September 2005, Emmet County, Michigan. Floyd entered the service at Camp Custer, 27 February 1943. He was sent from there to Keesler Field, near Biloxi, Mississippi. He started out in the Quartermaster division, then to the Army Air Corps, 9th Bombadier. Contributed By Barbara Probst |

| BM/1 Richard A. Reinhardt - boatswain's
mate 1st class had seen action on both the Atlantic and Pacific being that of
Atlantic patrol before Pearl Harbot and later involved in the Coral sea and
Midway battles. - Telegram received of death on June 13th 1945 and that he had
died fighting the Japanese in the South Pacific. He had married the former
Miss. Lillian Benson of Benton Harbor and was the father of a 19th month old
son. Richard was born in St. Joseph on Nov 23, 1922. Graduated St. Joseph High school in 1940. See below about remains being sent home. |

| Robert Duane Strong son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Strong of Berrien Center. Killed in action in the Pacific May 3, 1945 He was born in Berrien Twp Aug 14, 1925 and graduated from Berrien Springs H S in 1943 Entered military as a Marine in June 1944 and was sent to Okinawa on March 1, 1945. News Paladium 21 February, 1949 The bodies of 12 Berrien County servicemen killed in World War II are being returned from overseas for burial at home, the Department of the Army announced today. Eight are among the 5800 dead returned to the United States aboard the army transport Dalton Victory from the Pacific area. Two hundred and 59 are from Michigan. Those from Berrien county include one Benton Harborite, Pvt. James S. Chase, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Seren Chase, 810 Weld street; two from St. Joseph, Pfc, Willett S. Chinery, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Willett Chinery, 59 Lake Shore drive and BM/1 Richard A. Reinhardt, whose next of kin is Walter H. Reinhardt, 608 Hoyt street; Pfc. Robert Duane Strong, whose next of kin is Inah K Strong, Berrien Center; S/2 Robert J. Swartz, whose next of kin is Mrs. James Swartz of Buchanan; PhM/3 Vernon Martin, whose next of kin is Dorothy Martin, 1008 Birch Street, Niles; Pfc. Edward F. Pawloski, whose next of kin is Mrs. Edward F. Pawloski, R. F. D. 1, Three Oaks. Four Berrien county servicemen who lost their lives in Italy or North Africa are among the 175 World War II dead from Michigan who have been returned from the Mediterranean area aboard the Army transport - Corporal Eric G. Gibson, it was also announced. They include: Pfc. Walter R. Radde, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Radde, 307 Market street, St. Joseph, whose wife is Mrs. Clara Raddle, 661 Pearl street, Benton Harbor; Cpl. Donald Stakley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Stakley, 323 Linden street, Benton Harbor; 2nd Lt. Harold K. Beall, whose next of kin is Maybelle P. Beall of Niles, and 2nd Lt. Leonard E. Kepil, whose next of kin is Opal K. Kepil of R.F.D. 1, Coloma. Interment was originally in temporary military cemeteries in their respective areas, and the bodies have been returned here for permanent burial. |
