Brant, Edward J - The News Palladium carried a
lengthy obituary for Edward J. Brant on 02 Feb 1916 it partially reads:
“Edward J. Brant, One Benton Harbor’s First Executives, Dies At Home
This morning Man With Vision Of Greater City, Identified With Manifold
Interests Cleared Hundreds Acres Timber; Was Unique Figure By the passing today
of Edward Brant into that inner room over which the curtain of mystery is
forever drawn, Benton Harbor loses one of its most unique personalities. Mr.
Brant has been … for … days past at the home, Sunnyside Morton
avenue, but Tuesday evening appeared bright and cheerful. About 10 o’clock
this morning he was seized with a sudden collapse and passed quickly into his
last long sleep. Linked With Pioneer Days. Perhaps no
man in the twin cities or Berrien county was so intimately linked with the real
pioneer days of this section as was this man whose association with the early
phase of its growth. Deceased was a native of Ohio where his birth occurred in
1845. He is survived by a widow, Martha J. Carpenter Brant, to whom he was
married in Watervliet township, two daughters Mrs. Fred B. Collins, wife of
ex-Sheriff F. B. Collins, of this city, Mrs. Wm. Beck of Coloma, and one son
Mason Brant of Coloma, and two grandchildren, Miss Hallie Collins of this city
and Lincoln Beck of Coloma. Another daughter, Mrs. Alfred Withoff, died several
years ago in Toledo, Ohio Saw Greater Benton Harbor. It was Mr. Brant, who saw
the Greater Benton Harbor with the vision that was denied some of his
associates of that early day. He built with the clear preception that the twin
cities were one day to become linked as one; that Benton Harbor was to become
the city towards which it is now rapidly striding, a metropolis of southwestern
Michigan. With this end in view he gave to Benton Harbor the cities first fine
modern hotel, the Benton, with the block surrounding. This hostelry was erected
when the town numbered some 2,500 people, before paved streets, waterworks, a
street railway, or any of the improvements which some years later graces the
city, had even been born in the minds of its leading citizens. For some years
he was the hotels successful manager, becoming widely known after the state of
his hospitality. Mr. Brant was a Democrat. He served as mayor with a nice
perception that characterized the business of his life. His administration was
characterized by his efforts for the citys betterment and advancement,
characterized also by his endorsement of all forces that would work for the
benefit of the whole people, working indefatigably against those forces that
were …imical. Some twelve years ago Mr. Brant’s life was saved by the
late Dr. George Bell, by the use of salt treatment. For days the city’s
ex-mayor lingered between life and death, finally triumphing with the prompt
and efficient action of one of Benton harbor’s most beloved
physicians.” This obituary goes on to include statements from his peers
and was continued from page one to page three. The following day there was a
brief notice carried that reads: “Edw J. Brant Funeral Sunday Funeral
services for the late Edward J. Brant will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30
o’clock at the home, Sunnyside, Morton Avenue. Although Mr. Brant was one

body.”

today. Death Shock To Friends While Mrs. Brant has been unable, due to illness,
to be out much of the time in the last few years, and has been confined to the
house with a broken hip since October 14, news of her passing, nevertheless,
was a shock to scores of twin city friends. The surviving son and daughters are
as follows: Mason Brant, of Coloma; Mrs. William Becht, of Coloma, and Mrs.
Fred B. Collins, Benton Harbor; one grandson, Lincoln Becht, Coloma; one
granddaughter, Mrs. Stanley Patrick, of Battle Creek; three great
grandchildren, Kathryn Jean and Gordon C. Patrick of Battle Creek, and Jack
Edward Becht, son of Lincoln Becht, Coloma. Mrs. Stanley Patrick is the well
known radio ‘Mother Goose’ entertainer whose delightful stories have
been broadcasted for several years. Born In Canada Mrs. Brant was born in St.
Marys, Canada, April 14, 1849. Her family came over on the Mayflower and
settled in the east. She drew friends to her like a magnet, and was highly
esteemed by many not only in the twin cities but in Coloma and Watervliet, in
which she and the late Edward Brant passed many of the happiest years of their
married life. The two great grandchildren are the daughter and son of Mr. and
Mrs. Stanley Patrick, both former well known residents of this city. Mrs.
Patrick was formerly Miss Hallie Collins, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred B.
Collins. Organized Street Railway The late former Mayor Edward Brant, husband
of deceased, died at the age of 71 on February 2, 1916. He dropped dead in his
home after a short illness. Mar. Brant was a widely known and prominent pioneer
financier of Benton Harbor. At one time the former city executive was a village
trustee and also acted in that capacity in the village of St. Joseph at one
time. Mr. Brant played a large part in the industrial growth of the twin
cities. He was one of the organizers of the original Benton Harbor-St. Joseph
Street Railway & Light company, recently sold to other interests. He was
one of the organizers of the present Farmers & Merchants National Bank
& Trust Co. of which he had always been a director. He also engaged heavily
in real estate. Built Hotel Benton One of Mr. Brant’s largest real estate
ventures was the building of the Hotel Benton, still standing on the northeast
corner of Main and Pipestone streets. He built what has been known for many
years as the Hotel Benton block, the corner on which the American National Bank
& Trust Co. Now stands. Engaged In Lumber Industry When a young man Mr.
Brant became interested in the lumber industry. In his operations he had a
sawmill at Covert and bought a large tract of land at Watervliet. It was in the
height of his business career that he came to the twin cities. He first located
in St. Joseph. That was about 47 years ago. Then he and Mrs. Brant moved to
Benton Harbor. During his lifetime Mr. Brant saw Benton Harbor and St. Joseph
grow from villages to thriving cities. Benton Harbor had a population of only
2,000 when he came here to reside. He became a business authority in the
city’s industrial, civic, political and banking interests. Well Know Mason

Bryant, John L. -
The Niles Republican carried an obituary for John L. Bryant on 18, Jan,
1851 and it reads: "Death of John L. Briant Scarce had the news
of the death of young Compton reached us, ere we are called upon to the
list of the dead from this village in California. John L. Briant,
son of Lewis Briant, than whom no more noble or enterprising spirit
ever crossed the plains, fell a victim to the dysentary or cholres, on
or about the 13th on November, aged 21 years last June. He had
been in California near two years, and father and mother, brothers and
sisters were daily expecting him home when the sad tidings of his death
reached St. Joseph in a letter from Jas. B. Larue. Mr Larue
writes that John L. Briant had watched over him during a severe illness
and saved his life. In turn, Mr. Larue watched over and
administered to John, but to no avail. Thus another family and
numberous friends are called to mourn one of the brightest youths in
the country. Truly California may be called the grave yard of America."

infancy, since which time he had been a member of the family of his

Bryant, Susan - Berrien County Record carried an obituary for Susan Bryant on
03 Sep 1874 and it reads: "Died, August 27th, 1874, in Buchanan, Mrs.
SUSAN F. BRYANT, wife of Lewis Bryant, in the 70th year of her age. The
deceased was born in Nantucket, Mass. When quite young she removed with
her parents to Cincinnati, Ohio. She was married to Mr. Lewis Bryant in
1825. In 1835 they came to Michigan, making their home a few miles from
Buchanan, and more recently in Buchanan. Mrs. Bryant, during her last
sickness, which was of but five days continuance, spoke of death with
the utmost calmness and hopefulness. To her "dying was but going home."
She rested sweetly and confidingly on the merits and promise of Jesus,
without a doubt or fear respecting the future. The entire community
will miss her. The Church of which she was a member has lost one of its
most devoted exeplary members. Her family has been bereft of one whose
teachings, example and influence as a christian wife and mother were
most lovely and estimable. She lived and died a christian. In her life
and eath she has taught us all how to live and how to died. "Precious
in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints" ( Susan's maiden
name was Hatch. )
