Dixon, Charles
Sumner
No death that has
occurred in the twin cities for many months has come with such suddenness as
that of Charles S. Dixon, who late yesterday afternoon dropped dead at his
home, corner of Superior and Clay streets. Supposed to be suffering merely from
an attack of indigestion, from which it was thought he was rapidly recovering,
friends and acquaintances had no idea that death was hovering so near.
Friends of the Dixon family were overwhelmed by the shock when they were
apprised of Mr. Dixon's sudden demise. Since Saturday Mr. Dixon had been
suffering from indigestion, brought on, it was presumed, by the warm weather.
Yesterday he was feeling fairly well and in the afternoon was about the yard.
Later in the day he decided to come down town. Starting out, he was
hardly beyond his own dooryard when he retraced his steps. As he entered the
kitchen door he pitched forward. Mrs. Dixon, who was at home at the time,
rushed to her husband's assistance, but help was unnecessary. When a
physician arrived the heart had stopped beating for several minutes.
Together with his family, Mr. Dixon had resided in Benton Harbor for the past
nine years, having come to this city from Kansas. He was one of the best
known citizens of Benton Harbor. He had served as a member of the city
police force and for the past year or so had been connected with the street
railway company in the capacity of barn foreman. Mr. Dixon was a member of
Lake Shore lodge, Calvin Britain chapter, of
St. Joseph, and the local order of Elks. He carried $2,000 life insurance
in the A. O. U. W. order of Kansas.
Charles S. Dixon was 43
years of age. He was born July 10, 1861, in Volinia,
Cass county. He is survived by a wife,
formerly Miss Isadora Moody, of Pearl Grange, two sister, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs.
Agnes Osborne, of this city, and five children. The children are Morlan,
20 years of age; James, 19; Willis, 17; Eva, 15; and Harry, 10. The two
oldest are graduates of the Benton Harbor high school, and the remaining three
are still in school. Funeral services over the remains will be held
tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Masonic temple. The church services will
be in charge of Rev. Roblee [?] of St. Joseph, while the last rites at the
cemetery will be under Masonic auspices. Burial will be at Crystal
Springs cemetery. The body will lie in state at the temple tomorrow forenoon
between the hours of 10 and 12. Fellow employes of Mr. Dixon spoke highly
of him today, his death being lamented by all who had had the pleasure of his
friendship. At the streetcar barns the employes spoke feelingly of him,
sympathizing with the bereaved wife and children. While on the police force Mr.
Dixon made many acquaintances who did not forget him after he had assumed a
more responsible position with the street railway company, valuing his
companionship highly.
Death took him when
life seemed brightest, when the labor of years was just beginning to show, and
when the oldest of his children were nearing the turning points in their
careers, when the help and advice of a father is needed most. The death of
Charles Dixon will be truly mourned by many
in the twin cities. Taken From The News Palladium, Saturday, July 16,

resuscitator squad was called, but an ambulance rushed the stricken man to
Mercy hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. William
Benner.
Mr. Dumond had spent more then 50 years in an unsuccessful attempt
to find his parents. Born in New York City, Oct. 24, 1887, he was placed in
the New York Foundling home, located at 175 East 68th street, in New York
City, when he was four months old and remained there until he was five years
old. .In December, 1892 he was taken by Mr. and Mrs. William Dumond to
