Haase, Augusta - An Obituary for Augusta Haase was carried in the News Palladium on 01 Jun 1936 and it reads: “Mrs. Augusta Haase Dies; Rites Tuesday Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 from the farm home on Washington avenue and 2:30 from St. Peter’s Evangelical church for Mrs. Augusta Haase, head of a large family here, who died Sunday morning at 3 o’clock. The Rev. E. A. Kuhn, pastor of St. Peter’s, will officiate in services. Burial will be in the family lot in Riverview cemetery. The body lies in state at the farm home. Members of St. Peter’s Ladies’ Aid society will attend the funeral in a group. Mrs. Haase was born in Pomerania, Germany, December 18, 1850, and came to America and this community in 1882. She was a charter of St. Peter’s church and its Ladies’ Aid. A week’s illness brought death. Surviving Mrs. Haase are five children, all of whom reside in this community: Max, Edward, Mrs. Carrie Burandt, and William and Arthur Haase. She made her home with the last-named. There survive also 27 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great great-gandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Angolin of Galien. Her husband, Albert, died April 7, 1919. Also preceding Mrs. Haase in death were a son Emil, in 1923; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Adler, in 1926 and another son and daughter some years ago.” On 03 Jun 1936 the News Palladium carried this: “Haase Funeral Is Held Tuesday Scores of friends and relatives attended funeral services Tuesday afternoon at the farm home on Washington avenue and at St. Peter’s Evangelical church for Mrs. Augusta Haase, 85, head of a large family in this community, who died Sunday. Rev E. A. Kuhn, St. Peter’s pastor officiated in services. Ray Adler, a grandson of the deceased sang “Going Home.” Members of the Ladies Aid society, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a body and sang a German Hymn. Burial was in the family lot in Riverview cemetery. Five grandsons and a great grandson were casket bearers: Nathan, Alfred, and Russell Haase, Robert Burandt, Raymond Adler and Arthur Berk.”

Hambrick, David and Lavonne nee Clay
The Niles Daily Star carried an article about the automobile accident that killed David and LaVonne Hambrick on 23 Jun 1953 and it reads:
“Couple Killed Instantly Bridgman [Special]-A young Three Oaks serviceman who had been home on leave from overseas less than an hour and his wife were instantly killed early today when their car crashed into a semi-truck at the intersection of Snow and Date roads one and a half miles east of here. Killed were: David Lee Hambrick 23, and his wife, LaVonne, 20, both of rural Three Oaks. According to Berrien deputies, Hambrick and his wife were pinned under their car after it crashed into the truck and rolled over on its right side in a ditch. Coroner Harding Dey of St. Joseph, ruled the deaths accidental due to skull fractures, multiple head injuries and internal injuries. The truck diver, John Joseph Bonczkowski, 48 of St. Joseph, suffered minor injuries and was treated by a private physician in Bridgman. According to a deputies’ report, Hambrick failed to stop for a stop sign and his car hit the tractor part of the semi on the left side and rear. The impact of the crash spun Hambrick’s car westward and it came to rest in a ditch. Deputies said the semi continued on for a short distance and rolled over on its right side. Bonczkowski crawled from the truck with only minor injuries. Hambrick, who was one of the first servicemen to arrive in the Marshal Islands after the A-bomb test explosion arrived home in Three Oaks at 11:30 p.m. Monday for a furlough. He and his wife were instantly killed at 12:26 a.m. Surviving are: Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Clay and Mr. and Mrs. Thad Hambrick, all of rural route two, Three Oaks. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Boyd Funeral Home in Bridgman.”

Hambrick, Gussie nee Rapert
Gussie Hambrick died on 17 Jul 1953 and obituary was carried in the News Palladium on 18 Jul 1953 and reads: “Gussie Hambrick Bridgman, July 18-Mrs. Gussie Hambrick of Baroda died at 3:50 p.m. yesterday in her home. She had been ill for sometime and had been hospitalized for about five weeks, returning to her home the day before her death. The body has been taken to the Boyd funeral home at Bridgman where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday July 21, with burial in the New Troy cemetery. The Rev. Fred Williams, pastor of the Olivet Congregational church of Bridgman will officiate. Mrs. Hambrick was born Feb. 28, 1897, in Middlebrook, Ark., and had been a resident of Bridgman for three years. She was a member of the Bible church of Baroda. Survivors include her husband, Thad; her father, John Rapert of Maynard, Ark., a son J.P, Hambrick of Three Oaks; four daughters, Mrs. Mont Reeves of Corning, Ark., Mrs. Earl Brackett of Three Oaks, Mrs. Floyd Lockamy of Galien and Mrs. George Dhane of Van Austin, Tex; one sister, Mrs. Grace Tesdell of St. Louis, Mo.; and 21 grandchildren.” - - Contributed by: William Brackett at brackettwilliam@yahoo.com

Thad Hambrick died on 31 May 1954 and his obituary was carried in the News Palladium on 01 Jun 1954 and reads: “ Thad Hambrick Bridgman, June 1-Thad Hambrick, 62, of Bridgman, died at 3:15p.m. Monday at the home of his son, J.T. Hambrick, route 2, Three Oaks. The body is at the Boyd funeral home, where friends may call. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later. Mr. Hambrick was born Middlebrook, Ark., Oct. 27, 1891. He came to Bridgman about four years ago and had been employed at the Baroda Manufacturing company until about six months ago. He had been ill for about three months previous to his death. Survivors include his son J.T. Hambrick, four daughters, Mrs. Mont Reeves, of Corning, Ark., Mrs. Earl Brackett, of New Troy, Mrs. Floyd Lockamy, of Galien, and Mrs. George Dahne, of Van Austin, Tex., and 23 grandchildren. The obituary for Simeon Hamilton was carried in the Buchanan Record on 26 Sep 1901 and reads: Simeon Hamilton was born in Ohio Jan. 1, 1832 and died in Dayton, Mich. Sept. 14, 1901. Aged 69 years 8 months and 11 days. Mr. Hamilton was married to Miss Hulda Smith July 3, 1854, to them were born four children, one dying in infancy. He leaves to morn his loss a wife and three children, one sister and one brother besides a host of relatives and friends. The funeral was held on Sunday, Sept 15 conducted by Rev. E. R. Black. The obituary for Ida Hamilton was carried in the Berrien County Record on 15 Sep 1927 and it reads: "Ida Hamilton Funeral services for Miss Ida Hamilton, who died Wednesday night were held Friday afternoon at the Hamilton funeral parlors here. The Rev. Harry Staver of the First Presbyterian church officiated and burial was made in the Bakertown Cemetery. Miss Hamilton was born Jan. 22, 1856, in Bakertown, the daughter of Simeon and Hulda Hamilton, who were pioneers in this community. One brother, John Hamilton, several neices and nephews survive. Hampton, Mary nee Heckathorn
The Niles Daily Star carried an obituary for Mary Hampton on 29 Oct 1940 and it reads:  “Mrs. M. Hampton Dies Early Today Near Three Oaks-Three Oaks, Oct. 29-Mrs. Mary Jane Hampton, who had spent most of her life in this community, died this morning at 1:15 in her farm home three miles southwest of Three Oaks in Galien Township.  Mrs. Hampton was born Jan. 2, 1858, in woodland, Ind., and was married Nov. 11, 1880 to Samuel Hampton who survives her.  Other survivors are four children, Mrs. William Bolster, Seattle, Wash.; Wade Hampton, at home; James Hampton, Benton Harbor, and Lee and Russell Hampton, South Bend.  She also leaves two brothers, Frank Heckathorn, Galien Township, and Joseph Heckathorn, Dayton.  Friends may call at the Connelly funeral home until Thursday morning when it will be taken to the family home for a prayer service at 1.  Services will be conducted at 2 in the Olive Branch church, south of Galien, by the Rev. Hampton, Rachael nee Heckathorn 
The Acorn carried an obituary for Rachael Hampton on 29 Sep 1905 and it reads:  “Mrs. Richard Hampton died suddenly early Thursday morning of heart failure at her home southeast of town, a short distance east of the John Jerue place.  She retired in good health the night before and the first sign of distress was shown when the diseased fell from her bed, probably in a struggle to breath.  She died within fifteen minutes.  Mrs. Hampton leaves a husband and two boys, age 9 and 11 years.  She was a Heckathorn, being the sister of her husband’s brother’s wife, Mrs. Samuel Hampton.  The funeral was held today at the Galien Center church; interment at Galien village.  Mr. Hampton recently bought a farm east of his present location and the family was moving to the new home when the sad affliction befell them.”  There is an error in this obituary as Rachael was married to Charles E. Harner, Alta nee Beckwith
An obituary for Alta Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor New Palladium on 15 Dec 1954 and reads: “Mrs. Alta B. Harner Galien, Dec. 15-Mrs. Alta B. Harner, 86, well known Galien woman, and sister of Clayton, Glenn and Vera Beckwith of Benton Harbor, died Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Osteopathic hospital in South Bend. She had been a patient there for the past week, after suffering a fractured hip in a fall. Born in Weesaw township, Feb. 10, 1866, the daughter of the late John T. and Mary Young Beckwith Mrs. Harner was a lifelong resident of Berrien county. She was married to Edward Harner in 1891. He died in 1924. Her three brothers in Benton Harbor, all prominent in this area, are her only close survivors. A sister, Mrs. Minnie Kool, and a brother, Earl Beckwith, preceded her in death. Mrs. Harner’s body will be taken to the Kenny-Connelly funeral home, where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev. William Des Autels, pastor of the local Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Galien cemetery.” Edward Harner is also buried in this cemetery.

Harner, Anna nee Burger
An obituary for Anna Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 11 Sep 1961 and it reads: “Mrs. Anna Harner Galien-Mrs. Anna Catherine Harner 81, died at her home in Galien at 2:10 a.m. Sunday. She had been ill for six years. She was born April 19, 1880, the daughter of the late Frederick and Fredericka Burger, in Galien, where she spent her entire life. On Feb. 5, 1906, She married Fred Harner in Three Oaks. He died in 1921. Survivors include a son, Michael Harner, at home; one niece and several nephews; a brother, Gregory Burger died in 1957. Requiem high Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Three Oaks, of which she was a member. The Rev. Julius Hengesbach, church pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will take place in the Galien cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at the Connelly-Noble funeral home in Galien, where friends may call.”

An obituary for Charles Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 08 Nov 1967 and it reads: “Charles Harner Bridgman-Charles Harner, 87, of route 1, Buchanan, died Monday at 4:40 p.m. in the Berrien county hospital, Berrien Center. Mr. Harner, a local resident for the past 28 years, was born May 7, 1880, in Oronoko township. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Otto (Stella) Novak of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Henry (Ruth) Martin of Baroda and Mrs. Melvin (Avada) Wagner of Long Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. One son preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Boyd funeral home, Bridgman. Dr. Herbert Webber, pastor of the Olivet Congregational church, will officiate. The Berrien Springs Era carried a mention of Fred Harner’s death on 16 Jun 1921 and it reads: “Mrs. George Miller was called to Galien last Thursday by the death of her brother Fred Harner. Mr. Harner was well known in this vicinity and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. The funeral was held in Galien Sunday.” This would make the date of death for Fred Harner 09 Jun 1921. An obituary for George Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 09 Sep 1948 and reads: “George A. Harner Baroda, Sept 9-George A. Harner died suddenly in his farm home yesterday at 5 p.m. he was stricken with a sudden heart attack. His parents were John and Elizabeth Harner, prominent Berrien residents. He married Nora Mae Nelson Lamphar, adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lamphar, Benton Harbor, on Nov. 1, 1897, in St. Joseph. He is survived by his widow, two brothers, Jerry and Charles Harner, both of route 1, Buchanan, and a sister, Mrs. Jennie Upson, Berrien Springs. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Swen funeral home in Buchanan. The Rev. An Obituary for Harry Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 20 Jan 1966 and reads: “Harner Rites Set Bridgman-Funeral services for Harry L. Harner, 60, of Hills road, Baroda, who died Sunday at his home, were held yesterday at 2 p.m. in the Boyd funeral home. The Rev. Reginald Shepley, pastor of the Olivet Congregational church, officiated. Mrs. Roy Dehring was the soloist and Clarence Miller was the organist. Casket bearers were Art Schutze, Nelson Schultz, Roland McMillen, Anson Raber, Henry Weber and Alfred Jones. When John Harner died in 1884 the Niles Democrat, a Niles, Michigan newspaper carried a short obituary in the “Our Neighbors” section. It was on page 8 and reads “John Harner, an old resident of Oronoko township, died suddenly of heart disease on the 7th inst.” The Niles Weekly Mirror, another Niles newspaper, also carried a short obituary “Mr. John Harner, a resident of this county for nearly half a century, died of heart disease, at the residence of his son-in-law, (Moses Feather) on the 14th of June, aged 81 years.” Both these dates are incorrect as his death record indicates he died on 04 June. - Contributed by: William Brackett at brackettwilliam@yahoo.com

The South Bend Tribune carried a death notice for Katherine Harner on Saturday December 23, 1893 and it reads: “Mrs. L. Horner, of 324 north Scott street, died at 4:30 o’clock this morning, aged 62 years. The cause of death was dropsy of the heart. Her husband, three sons and one daughter survive her. The funeral will take place at the residence at 10 o’clock Monday forenoon, Rev. N. D. Williamson officiating, and the remains will be taken to Brady, Mich., for burial. Leaving at 1:15 p.m. of that day over the Vandalia.” This name should read Harner not Horner and Brady, Michigan should read Baroda, Michigan. She was the wife of Levi Harner. The South Bend Tribune carried a death notice for Levi Harner on Thursday October 21, 1915 and it reads: “Levi Harner Announcement comes to-day of the death of Levi Harner, former South Bend man, who died Oct. 13 at Glendora, Mich. He is survived by three step-children, Mrs. Lucinda Walton, George and Tobias Allen, all of Glendora. Mr. Harner was born April 25, 1838, in Ohio. He was married in 1864 to Mrs. Katherine Allen, whose death occurred in 1893. Mr. Harner was a member of the 12th regiment of Michigan infantry during the civil war.” Lucinda Walton was the wife of Richard Walton of Lake Township, Berrien County, Michigan. An obituary for Moses Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 29 Dec 1942 and it reads: “Mose Harner, 74, Well Known In County, Dies Baroda, Dec.29-Mose Harner, 74, prominent Berrien county man and member of a family well known in this locality, died at 4:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon in his home in south Baroda township. Mr. Harner had been ill for five weeks and in critical condition, due to pneumonia, for the last few days. Hw was the son of John and Elizabeth Harner, and was born in Oronoko township, not far from the present home in south Baroda. His parents were pioneers in this county. Surviving are a son Harry Harner of Baroda, two daughters, Mrs. Rose McMillen and Mrs. Lavina Critzer, Baroda, 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Jennie Upson of Berrien Springs, and three brothers, George and Charles Harner of Baroda and Jerry Harner of St. Joseph. The body is at the Kenney funeral home in Galien. An obituary for Nora Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 18 Feb 1957 and it reads: “Mrs. Nora M. Harner Baroda, Feb. 18-Mrs. Nora M. Harner, 81, died at 5 a.m. today at the home of her nephew, Harry Harner, route 1, Baroda. Mrs. Harner had made her home with her nephew for the past year. She was born Jan. 29, 1876 in Benton township, and on Nov. 3, 1897 was married to George Harner. The couple lived on a farm on route 1, Baroda. Mr. Harner died Sept. 8, 1948. In addition to her nephew, Harry Harner, Mrs. Harner is survived by several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Boyd funeral home, Bridgman. The rev. Frederick Williams, pastor of Olivet Congregational church of Bridgman, will officiate. Burial will be in Hinman cemetery, near Baroda. An obituary for Orville Harner was carried in the Benton Harbor News Palladium on 13 Sep 1957 and it reads: “Orville Harner Buchanan, Sept, 13-Orville Harner, 52, Route 1, Red Bud Trail, died at 9 a.m. Thursday in Pawating Hospital in Niles where he had been a patient for several weeks. He was born July 27, 1905, he married Eva Lolmaugh in Buchanan. Surviving besides his widow are his parents, Charles Harner and Mrs. Louise Bates; a daughter Mrs. Lester Schoenfeldt, Buchanan; a son, James, in the U.S. Marines Corps, stationed at San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Otto Novak of South Bend, and Mrs. Henry Martin of Baroda. A half-brother, Renvue Harner, resides in Seattle, Wash. Services are schedules for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Swem funeral home at Buchanan with the Rev. Fredrick Williams, pastor of the Olivet Congregational church. Bridgman officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge cemetery. BUCHANAN -- Richard D. Harroff, 67, of Buchanan died Monday morning, May 24, 2004, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. He was a farmer with a love for farming and was a U.S. Army veteran. He proudly drove school bus for River Valley High School boys basketball teams.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. (Michigan time) Thursday, May 27, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, with the Rev. David Meister of First United Methodist Church, Buchanan, officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buchanan Senior Center or to First United Methodist Church, Buchanan.
Richard was born on Dec. 15, 1936, in Buchanan. He was born to Virginia (Hess) Harroff (surviving) and Jack Harroff (preceded). He married Gloria Homer on July 14, 1973.
Richard is survived by Gloria Harroff, wife, Buchanan; Virginia Harroff, mother, Buchanan; Leeann Adair, stepdaughter, Buchanan; Gale (Mike) Chubb, stepdaughter, Buchanan; Bernard Harroff, brother, Galien; Marge (John) Yetzke, honorary sister, Watervliet; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Hartline, Clayton
"Clayton Hartline Dies Suddenly At Age 67"
    Clayton Hartline, 67, died suddenly at his home on the Glendora Road 7 ½ miles northwest of Buchanan, Saturday September 24 (1955). Mr. Hartline had been in poor health for some time but was not known to be ill on the morning of his death. He had gone out to a melon patch near his barn, and later was found there dead. Death was believed to have been due to a heart attack, and instantaneous. He was born on the farm where he died Feb. 28 1888, the son of Joel and Hetty Boyle Hartline, and had lived there continuously farming the place, which had been in the family possession since 1864.
    He married Ada Stevens at Berrien Springs on March 11, 1911. She died May 5, 1955. He is survived by the following: three daughters, Mrs. Lyle (Vera) Bachteal, Glendora; Miss Clara Hartline at the home; Mrs. Donald (Arlene) Rhoades, Cassopolis; by four sisters, Mrs. Ella Phiscator of St. Joseph, Mrs. Estelle Hagley, of Vicksburg, Mrs. Minnie Robe of Buchanan, Mrs. Blanche Arend of Baroda, by one brother William Hartline of Baroda. The last rites were held at the Swem Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Unruh, pastor of the Christian Church of Sawyer, in charge. Burial was in Storick Cemetery. Frank Hartline Takes Own Life- Buchanan and vicinity was shocked Sunday morning, May 9, to hear that Frank Hartline, aged 68, who lived five and one-half miles north of that town, had shot himself about 5:15 am in the back of the head with a shotgun, tearing off the rear part of his head and killing himself instantly. He had gone out doors to the corner of the garage at his home in Buchanan township before pulling the trigger.

Mrs Hartsell taken by death in Florida City  The body of Mrs Melissa Sutherland Hartsell, who died July 28, at the home of her daughter, Mrs George H Campbell, St Petersburg, Florida, will arrived in Benton Harbor Thursday for funeral services from the Dean mortuary Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Mrs Hartsell, whose death followed that of her husband Theodore Hartsell by only six days had lived all her life in Benton Harbor and other parts of Berrien County until recently, when she and her husband went to live with their daughter.  She was born June 24, 1864, and was married January 28, 1883.  Besides her daughter, she leaves one sister, Mrs Ida Clawson, South Bend; three brothers, Nelson Sutherland, Hartford, J.H. Sutherland, Benton Harbor, and C.W. Sutherland, Sister Lakes, and several nieces and nephews.  Services will be conducted by the Reverend Glen M. Hartsell Rites Are Held Today    Funeral services for Mrs Melissa Sutherland Hartsell, who died July 28 in St Petersburg, Florida, were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Dean chapel.  The Reverend Glenn M Frye, pastor of the Methodist Peace Temple, officiated.  Mrs Ruth Proctor Miller sand, and Mrs H.W. Fowler presided at the organ.  Bearers were Carl Cassidy, Vitus Hartsell, Burton Sutherland, Kenneth Clawson, Frank Seaberg, and Irving Hartsell.  Burial was in P enn Yan Cemetery.

Ernest Hathcoat Sr. BERRIEN SPRINGS—Ernest Hathcoat, Sr., 75, of 1021 Niles Ave., died at 7:55 p.m. Monday in Berrien General Hospital, where he had been a patient for one day. A retired Clark Equipment Co. employee, Mr. Hathcoat was born December 19, 1894, in Ravenden, Ark., and had lived here since 1943. on October 1, 1916, in Hoxie, Ark., Mr. Hathcoat married the former Grace E. Mosier, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Ernest Jr. of Berrien Springs; a daughter, Mrs. Orville Dickson of Berrien Springs; five brothers, three sisters, including Mrs. Wilson Frye of New Buffalo, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the McLauchlin Funeral Home, with Aleck Dickson of Vincennes, Ind., officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The news Palladium carried the obituary for Adolph Hauch on 06 Jan 1958 and it reads: “Adolph Hauch, 76, died at his home in Stevensville at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. He and his wife, the former Ameila Geschefske, had made their home in Stevensville since 1955. He was born June 24, 1881, in Russia, and on Oct. 15, 1904, in Benton Harbor married Amelia Geschefske. The couple lived in Benton Harbor until 1910 and then moved to a farm in Bridgman. In 1918 they moved from Bridgman to a farm near Baroda. Upon Mr. Hauch’s retirement in 1955 the couple moved to Stevensville. In addition to his wife Mr. Hauch is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Irene) Crenshaw of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Edward (Elizabeth) Wierzbacki of Lansing, Ill., Mrs. Edwin (Ruth) Geipel of Stevensville and Mrs. Wilfred (Josephine) DeSchaff of Benton harbor; four sons, Walter of Villa Park, Ill., Raymond and Lawrence both of St. Joseph and Ernest of Stevensville, two sisters, Mrs. Leo Nering and Mrs. Pauline Schultz, both of South bend. Ind.; one brother William Hauch of Neana, Alaska; 21 grandchildren and four great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by three sons, Theodore, John and Clarence. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Stevensville, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The rev. Harold Zink, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Bridgman. Memorials in the name of Mr. Hauch may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran church for the building fund. The News Palladium carried the obituary for Amelia Hauch on 08 Jul 1963 and it reads: “Mrs. Amelia Hauch Amelia Hauch, of Fish Hatchery road, route 2, Millburg, died at 3:55 a.m. Sunday in Mercy hospital, Benton harbor. She was 78 years old. Mrs. Hauch was born Dec. 29, 1885, in Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hafer. She came to this country with her parents in 1886. She was married to Carl Hauch, Oct. 11, 1902, in Benton Harbor. Her husband preceded her in death in November, 1960. Surviving are two sons, Herbert Hauch, of Aconto Falls, Wis., and Victor Hauch, Benton Harbor; a Berrien County sheriff’s detective; a daughter. Mrs. Henry (Viola) Bomke, of Benton Harbor; a brother, Carl Hafer, St. Joseph; two sisters, Mrs. August (Hulda) Steinke, of Sodus, and Mrs. Harley (Anna) DeHays, of Elkhart, Ind.; four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The News Palladium carried the obituary for Anna Hauch on 29 Nov 1946 and it reads: “Mrs. Anna Hauch Dies At Sawyer Sawyer, Nov. 29-Mrs. Anna Hauch, 86, died suddenly at 2 a.m. Thursday at the home of daughter, Mrs. Marie Reske of Sawyer with whom she had resided for the past year. Born Dec. 25, 1859, in Gombin, Poland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gottlieb Bark, she came to Sawyer in 1921. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church of Sawyer and the ladies aid society of the church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Marie Reske of Sawyer, and Mrs. Pauline Richter of Bridgman; a step-son, Louis Hauch of Bridgman; 26 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Trinity Lutheran church of Sawyer by the Rev. E. H. Schury. Burial will be made in Riverside cemetery near Sawyer. The news Palladium carried the obituary for Anna Hauch on 05 May 1948 and it reads: “Mrs. Anna Hauch Berrien Springs, May 5, -Mrs. Anna Hauch, 66, died at 5:10 this morning at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Rudlaff of the Pucker street road, Berrien township, after a long illness. Mrs. Hauch and her husband, Frederick Hauch, had made their home there for the last two and a half years. Mrs. Hauch was born in Poland on Oct. 1, 1881 and came to the United States when she was 19. She was married to Frederick Hauch in Bridgman, on Sept. 18, 1900. They lived for several years in Benton harbor, but spent most of their life on a farm near Glendora. Besides her husband, Mrs. Hauch is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Lydia Rudlaff; Mrs. Hattie Grau, St. Joseph; Mrs. Emil Backus, Glendora; and Mars. Mattie Lausch, Benton Harbor. Three sons, Adolph of Niles, Morley of New troy, and Albert, a patient at the Pinecrest sanatorium, Oshtemo, also survive as do a brother, William Teifenbach, New Troy, and two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Pufall, New Troy and Mrs. Kathryn Schultz, Bridgman. The News Palladium carried the obituary for August Hauch on 02 Oct 1940 and it reads: “August R. Hauch Taken By Death Buchanan, Oct 2-August R. Hauch, 33 died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday at University hospital in Ann Arbor. He resided on Cleveland avenue, a short distance north of Galien. Mr. Hauch was born October 26, 1906, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Hauch, of Baroda, and was married to Margaret Mattner on June 7, 1930. He was an elder and active member in Trinity Lutheran church at Glendora. Surviving are a son, Lester; four sisters, Mrs. Martha Laush, Benton Harbor, Mrs. Elsie Backus, Buchanan, Mrs. Lydia Rudloff, Berrien Springs, and Mrs. Hattie Grau, Benton Harbor; three brothers, Adolph and Albert, Berrien Springs, and Martin, Buchanan. Funeral services will be held at the home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran church in Glendora, with the Rev. E. K. Jeschke officiating. The News Palladium carried an obituary for Bernice Hauch on 14 Nov 1953 and it reads: “Mrs. August G. Hauch Three Oaks, Nov. 14-Mrs. Bernice Lorraine Hauch, 42, 106 South Elm street, died at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Memorial hospital in South Bend, where she had been a patient the past week. She had been ill since July of this year and had been hospitalized at Memorial previously. Friends may call at the H. B. Connelly funeral home where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. D. C. Turbin, pastor of the Three Oaks Methodist church officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery, north of Three Oaks. Mrs. Hauch was born in Three Oaks, Jan. 22, 1911, and was the daughter of Fred and Effie Hess. She was graduated from Three Oaks high school in 1929 and, until her illness, was employed at Warren Featherbone company. She is survived by her husband, August G.; two children, Richard Brush, a senior at Western Michigan college, Kalamazoo; and Bonnie Lou Brush, a junior at the Three Oaks high school; her parents, and one brother, Donald Hess of Three Oaks.” DOD 12 Nov 1953

Hauch on 12 Apr 1954 and it reads: “Sawyer, April 12-Clifford D’Wayne Hauch, three year old son of Arthur and Edith Barnes Hauch, Tower Hill road, near Sawyer, died at 10:15 p.m. Saturday at Memorial hospital, St. Joseph, after four and one half months’ illness. He was born in Memorial hospital, Oct. 1, 1950. Survivors besides his parents are two brothers, Eric, 5, and Bruce Albert, eight months old. His maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Barnes, of Three Oaks, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Marie Reske, of Sawyer, also survive. Funeral services will be held in the Trinity Lutheran church Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Rev. E. G. Ripke, pastor of the church, will officiate. The News Palladium carried the obituary for Mary Hauch on 07 Jul 1933 and it reads: “Mrs. Mary Haupt Of Winans Street Is Taken By Death Mrs. Mary Haupt, 545 N. Winans street, died this morning at 11 o’clock, at the age of 69. The deceased was born in Germany, Aug. 20, 1863, and came to this country in 1923 and for the past 10 years had been living at the home of her daughter, Mrs. August Zepig, at 545 N. Winans, Mrs. Haupt is survived by a sister, Mrs. Samuel Yops who resides on a farm near Sister Lakes; her daughter, Mrs. August Zepig; two sons, William and Julius Haupt, Chestnut Street; and a brother, Gustave Fahrman who lives in Germany. The body was taken to Martinie’s funeral home, but no funeral arrangements have been made.” The same newspaper carried the following on 08 Jul 1933: “Last Rites For Mrs. Mary Hauch Set For Monday. Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mary Hauch, of 545 N. Winans street, who died yesterday morning at 1:30 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. August Zepik of 545 N. Winans street, and at 2 o’clock at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran church. The Rev. H. C. Haase, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be in the Crystal Springs cemetery. Friends may view the body at the Martinie funeral home until Monday morning, at which time it will be removed to the family home.” The spelling of the name as Haupt is the newspaper’s not mine. Cemetery records have this same person listed as Ernestina Hauch.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Fred Hauch on 30 Jan 1950 and it reads: “Fred Hauch Berrien Springs, Jan. 30-Fred Hauch, 72, of Berrien township, died at 9:20a.m. Saturday in the Berrien county hospital, Berrien Center, where he was taken six weeks ago. He had been ill four years. The deceased was born Sept. 12, 1877, in Poland, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Hauch, and came to the United States in 1889, locating in Benton Harbor. Later they lived in Bridgman and Glendora. He married Anna Tiefenbach of Bridgman Sept. 18, 1900. She preceded him in death May 5, 1948. For the past four and a half years he had lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Rudlaff in Berrien Township. He had been a member of Berrien Springs Trinity Lutheran church for many years. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Rudlaff of Berrien township, Mars. Emil Bachus, Gelndora, Mrs. Julius Lausch, Benton Harbor, Mrs. Julius Grau, St. Joseph; two sons, Martin Hauch, Glendora and Albert Hauch, St. Joseph; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Adolph Hauch, Baroda; two sisters, Mrs. Leo Nering, Lydick, Ind., and Mrs. Pauline Schultz, South Bend. A son, Adolph Hauch, died June 10, 1949. A prayer service at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon in the Griner funeral home will be followed by the funeral services at 2:30 in Trinity Lutheran church, with the pastor, Rev. Martin A. Wuggazer, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the Griner funeral home.”

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Fred Hauch on 12 May 1966 and it reads: “Fred C. Hauch Dies In Sodus At Age Of 85 Fred C. Hauch, 85, of Dutch Lane, Sodus, died Wednesday evening at 7:15 at his home. Mr. Hauch was born in Volinia, Russia, Jan. 29, 1881. He moved to this area at the age of 16. He married the former Ida Hafer, April 1, 1902, and she preceded him in death Jan. 25, 1954. Survivors include four sons, Alfred, Leo and Stanley of Sodus and Oscar of Adrian; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Lucille) Kinst of Eau Claire and Mrs. Richard (Mable) Cottier of Louisville, Ky.; five sisters, Mrs. Christine Burtzloff of Niles, Mrs. Lena Krumrie and Mrs. Methilda Krone of Sawyer and Mrs. Alvina Martin and Mrs. Amelia Schultz of Benton Harbor; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. A son, Leonard, preceded him in death, in 1954 as did four brothers. Mr. Hauch was the oldest member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Sodus, where he held several offices and was a member for 49 years. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran church. The Rev. Henry Peter, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Crystal Springs cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church. Friends may call at the Kerlikowske and Starks funeral home, St. Joseph.” Fred was a son of Christian and Wilhelmina (Gertz) Hauch.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Harold Hauch on 20 Aug 1959 and it reads: “Harold Hauch Harold Hauch, 71, of 294 Paw Paw avenue, died at 1:25 a.m. Wednesday in the Veterans’ Administration hospital, Hines, Ill. where he had been a patient for one day. He was born in Benton Harbor in 1888, the son of Christian and Wilhemina Hauch, and had resided here his entire life where he was employed at the Benton Harbor Malleable Industries for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, from 1915 to 1919. Mr. Hauch is survived by three brothers, Carl and Henry, both of Millburg, and Fred of Sodus; four sisters, Mrs. Tilda Krone, of New Troy, Mrs. Lena Krumri, of Sawyer, Mrs. Alvina Martin and Mrs. Mollie Schultz, both of Benton Harbor; a half sister, Mrs. Christine Burtsloff, of Niles, and several nieces and nephews. A half brother preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Frost funeral home, with pastor of the Church Of The Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in the military cross at Crystal Springs cemetery. Friends may call at the Frost funeral home, beginning at 8:45 this evening.” DOD19 Aug 1959

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Henry Hauch on 11 May 1961 and it reads: “Henry Hauch Henry Hauch, 77, of Fish Hatchery road, Bainbridge township, died Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Mercy hospital, where he had been a patient for five weeks. Mr. Hauch was a fruit farmer in Bainbridge township for the past 48 years. He was born on Dec. 31, 1883, in Germany. He arrived in the Benton harbor area with his parents, the late Christian and Minnie Hauch, at the age of 12. He married the former Rose Kreiger on June 6, 1909. His widow survives, as do five sons, Hervey and Dean both at home, Rolland and Clarence both of Benton Harbor, and Clifford of Dowagiac; two daughters, Mrs. Luther (Florence) Blickenstaff of Pontiac and Mrs. Fred (Ruth) Molter of Dowagiac; a brother, Fred of Sodus; five sisters, Mrs. Christine Burtzlaff of Niles, Mrs. Mollie Schultz and Mrs. Alvina Martin all of Benton Harbor; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew’s Lutheran church in Benton Harbor, of which Mr. Hauch was an active member, having served for several years on the church board. The Rev. E. H. Wendland, pastor, will officiate. The Kerlikowske funeral home of St. Joseph is in charge of arrangements.”

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Ida Hauch on 25 Jan 1954 and it reads: “Mrs. Ida Hauch Mrs. Ida Hauch, 70, died at 4:30 a.m. today in her home on Dutch lane road, Sodus township. She was born Sept. 22, 1883 in Russia, the daughter of Albert and Gusty Hafer and came to this country at the age of eight in 1891. On April 1, 1902 she was married to Fred Hauch, who survives. She is also survived by seven children; Alfred, Leonard and Leo Hauch of Sodus; Stanley at home; Oscar Hauch of Adrian; Mrs. Mabel Cottier of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Lucille Kuntz of Eau Claire; 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Albert and Carl Hafer of Sidus; four sisters Mrs. Mary McClellan of Newaygo; Mrs. Amelia Hauch of Millburg; Mrs. Hulda Steinke of Sodus; Mrs. Anna DeHayes of Elkhart, Ind. A sister Bertha Rhode, died in 1942 and a brother Reinhold, died in 1934. Mrs. Hauch was a charter member of the Ladies’ Aid of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Sodus where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Alfred Maas will officiate and burial will be in Crystal Springs cemetery. The body will be taken to the residence Tuesday afternoon and at 10 a.m. Wednesday will be taken to the church.”

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Leonard Hauch on 01 Nov 1954 and it reads: “Leonard Hauch, 43, of Sodus, died Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Mercy hospital, Benton Harbor, after an illness of six years. Mr. Hauch, a lifelong resident of the Sodus community, was born Dec. 7, 1910 in Sodus. He married the former Caroline Setlak, who survives, March 27, 1932. Other survivors are three sons, Richard and Ronald, at home, and Leonard, Jr., stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; two daughters, Judith and Suzanne, at home; his father, Fred; four brothers, Alfred, Leo and Stanley, of Sodus and Oscar, of Ardian, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Mable Cottier, of Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Lucille Kundst, of Sodus. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church at Sodus. The Rev. Alfred F. Maas, pator of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Crystal Springs cemetery. The body is at the Kelikoske funeral home, St. Joseph, where friends may call until 10:30 a.m. Monday, when it will be taken to the church.” Leonard was the son of Fred C. and Ida (Hafer) Hauch of Sodus. His widow, Caroline married 2nd his brother Stanley Hauch and they are also buried in Crystal Springs.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Louis Hauch on 09 Jun 1966 and it reads: “Louis Hauch Dies Three Oaks-Louis Hauch, 76, of 7 Chestnut street, Three Oaks, died in Mercy hospital shortly after being admitted at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday. He had suffered an heart attack earlier at his home. He was born in Russia Nov. 10, 1889, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hauch, and married Marie Hebner in Bridgman, May 19, 1917. Mr. Hauch was a retired grinder from Clark Equipment company in Buchanan. He moved two years ago to Three Oaks from New Troy. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Otto (Hilda) Strefling of Buchanan; Mrs. Donald (Elsie) Boganwright of Three Oaks; Mrs. William (Helen) Nice of South Bend, Ind.; two sons, Fred of Stevensville and John of Benton Harbor; 15 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. The News Palladium carried the obituary for Marie Hauch on 21 Aug 1968 and it reads: “Mrs. Marie Hauch Mrs. Marie Hauch, 91, of 1316 Wolcott avenue, St. Joseph, died at 11:20 a.m. yesterday at her home. Mrs. Hauch was born in Russia, Oct. 20, 1876, and came to the United States in 19023. Her husband, William J. Hauch, preceded her in death in May of 1937. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Vina Smith, Mrs. Victor (Mandy) DeWitt and Mrs. William (Susan) Lawrick of Benton Harbor, Mrs. Tony (Elsie) Virgo, with whom Mrs. Hauch had made her home and Mrs. Ed (Ruth) Guse of Dowagiac; a son, William of Watervliet; 30 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two half sister, Mrs. Rudolph Herman and Mrs. Herman Gallert of Benton Harbor. Two sons and a daughter preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kerlikowske and Starks funeral home. The Rev. Richard Selmer, pastor of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Crystal Springs cemetery. She was the wife of William Julius Carl Hauch. Her maiden name appears on her son, Fred’s, death record and it is given as Kraklau.

Hauch, Nancy and Sharon
The News Palladium carried an obituary for Sharon K. and Nancy L. Hauch (twins) on 30 Jul 1956 and it reads: “Hauch Twins Die Three Oaks, July 30-Graveside services were scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Riverside cemetery, Chickaming township, for Nancy Lee and Sharon Kay Hauch, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hauch, who were still born at 6:20 a.m. Sunday at Memorial hospital, St. Joseph. In addition to their parents, who reside at 111 Buckeye street, the twins are survived by maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wharton of New Troy and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Marie Reske of Sawyer. The Rev. Ernst G. Mueller, pastor of Sawyer Trinity Lutheran church, was the officiating minister. The Boyd funeral home of Bridgman had charge of arrangements.” DOD 29 Jul 1956

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Reinhold Hauch on 15 Apr 1929 and it reads: “Reinhold Hauch Dies On Saturday Reinhold Hauch, an employee of the Benton Harbor Malleable foundry, died at 3 p.m., Saturday at his home, 419 Park street, following a short illness with pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at the Dean mortuary at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, with burial at Crystal Springs cemetery. Rev. John Erb of Chicago, assisted by Rev. F. W. Busse of South Bend, will officiate. Mr. Hauch was born in Russia in July, 1888, and came to the United States in 1920, settling in Sawyer. He lived there for five years, then removed to Benton Harbor. Surviving are his widow and seven children, ranging in age from 10 months to 19 years, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hauch of Sawyer, and a brother, Lewis, of Glendora.” Reinhold was the son of John and Anna Hauch of Sawyer.

Renate Hauch 2nd wife of Christian Hauch died on 20 Jun 1943 and her obituary reads: Mrs. Renate D. Hauch, 374 Lincoln Ave., Dies-Mrs. Renate D. Hauch, 75, of 374 Lincoln, died at 2:42 Saturday afternoon at her home, after two years illness.Deceased was born December 25, 1867 in Germany. She was married to John Pauls in Germany and came to St. Joseph in 1890. The couple bought a farm near Millburg, where Mr. Pauls died January 8, 1902. In1908 she was married to Christian Hauch. He died on April 9, 1931. Surviving Mrs. Hauch are the following children: William H. Pauls,Walter A. Pauls and Richard E. Pauls, all of Benton Harbor; Fred A. Pauls of Wheaton, Ill.; Mrs. Joseph H. Davis, Mrs. Clarence E. Brown and Mrs. Emma Swears, all of Benton Harbor; and Mrs. Virgil Bowden, of Kalamazoo. Also 13 grandchildren with four grandsons in military service, and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hauch was a very devout Christian. She was a member of the New Apostolic church, on Superior street.Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Dean Mortuary. The Rev. F. W. Busse, of South Bend, will officiate. Burial will be in the Crystal Springs cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for Wilhelmina Hauch on 01 Oct 1934 and it reads: “Mrs. Wilhelmina Hauch Expires The death of Mrs. Wilhelmina Hauch, mother of one of the largest clans in the county, occurred at 6 p.m. Saturday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Schultz, in Benton township, where the deceased had resided the last several years. Mrs. Hauch had been ill five weeks. Mrs. Hauch would have been 88 years old in December. She was born in Germany in 1846 and came to America in 1896, to settle in the Benton Harbor community. She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran church of Benton harbor. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:15 o’clock from the Schultz home and at 2 o’clock from St. Matthew’s church. The rev. H. C. Haase will officiate. Burial will be in Crystal Springs cemetery. Surviving the deceased are 10 of her 11 children, 51 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, and two sisters. The children are; Ferdinadn Smikle of Sodus; Mrs. Christina Burtzloff, Mrs. Lena Krumrei and Mrs. Matilda Krone of Sawyer; Carl Hauch of Millburg, Ferdinand of Sodus, Henry and Reinhold of Bainbridge; Mrs Louis Martin and Mrs. Ralph Schultz of Benton township. The sisters are Mrs. Chrisitne Ratz of Galien and MRs. Hannah Kintop of Sawyer. Christian Hauch married 18 Apr 1874 Wilhelmine Schmeichel in Rozyszcze, Volhynia, Russia. It was noted "wife was Gertz". This is the Christian Hauch who immigrated to Berrien County, Michigan in 1896. Schmeichel was her 1st husband surname. Her death record gives her father’s name as John Gertz.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for William Hauch on 15 May 1937 and it reads: “W. Hauch, 59 Watervliet Farmer Dies William Hauch, 59, Watervliet township farmer and a resident of Berrien county 33 years, died this morning at the home of a son, Robert, after an illness of several weeks. Surviving are the wife, Mary; three sons, Fred and Robert of Watervliet township, and William, Benton Harbor; five daughters, Mrs. Alvina Smith, Mrs. Amandy DeWitt, Mrs. Susie Laurick, Mrs. Elsie Virgo, all of Benton Harbor, and Mrs. Ruth Edwards, of Sodus; 25 grandchildren, one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Dean mortuary. Friends may call at the mortuary.” A follow-up was carried in the same paper on May 18, 1937 and it reads: “Hold Funeral For William Hauch Funeral rites for William Hauch, of Watervliet township, were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Dean mortuary, the Rev. L. F. Gassner, Clay street Baptist church pastor officiating. Clifford Lake sang, and Mrs. H. W. Fowler accompanied on the chapel organ. Casket bearers were: Charles Edwards, August Hauch, Fritz Zepik, John Fuhrman and Herman Fuhrman. Burial took place in Crystal Springs cemetery. His death record gives his name as William Julius Carl Hauch. He was the son of Karl and Marie (Tiefenbach) Hauch of Solomka, Volhynia, Russia. He has a “Declaration of Intention” to become a citizen on file and it states he was born on 25 Dec 1876 in Volhynia, Russia. He came to America via Bremen Germany on the ship “Brandenberg” and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on the 2nd day of July, 1904. This record also gives his wife’s name as Mary, also of Volhynia.

The News Palladium carried the obituary for George Hauck on 25 May 1942 and it reads: “George H. Hauck Dies Late Sunday George H. Hauck, 76, of 353 Empire, avenue, died Sunday evening at 9:45 o’clock, after an extended illness. Mr. Hauck has been a resident of this vicinity for 30 years. He was employed at the Benton Harbor Malleable Industries. He worked there until the time of his illness. He was born December 13, 1865 in Ohio. Surviving is a niece, Mrs. Margarethe Marie Smith, of Chicago. The deceased’s wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Hauck, died December 3, 1933. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Reiser mortuary where friends may call.” The same newspaper carried a follow-up to this notice on 26 May 1942 and it reads: “Hauck Funeral Rites To Be Held Wednesday Funeral services for George H. Hauck, 76, of 353 Empire avenue, who died Sunday evening, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock from the Reiser funeral home. Dr. Howard A. Blanning, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Crystal Springs cemetery. Friends may call at the Reiser funeral home.”

Hauck, Elizabeth
The News Palladium carried the obituary for Elizabeth Hauck on 23 Dec 1933 and it reads: “Mrs. Geo. Hauck Does Suddenly; Rites Tuesday Mrs. Elizabeth Hauck, wife of George Hauck, 955 Pearl street, died at 10 o’clock this morning at St. Anthony’s hospital, Michigan City, following a major operation on Thursday. She had been ill only a short time, and was removed to the hospital Wednesday for surgical care. She had been a resident of Benton Harbor since 1911, except for a brief period spent in Kenosha, Wis. The Haucks had no children. Besides her husband, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Emma Kingsley, in Kenosha. She would have celebrated her 70th birthday next April 12 had she lived. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the Dean mortuary. The Rev. Howard Blanning, Congregational pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in Crystal Springs cemetery. Friends may view the body at Dean’s up until the hour of services.

Heckathorn, Christopher
The Acorn carried an obituary for Christopher Heckathorn on 21 Jul 1910 and it reads:  "The Passing of a Pioneer.  Christopher Heckathorn was born in Stark county, Ohio in 1831 and died at his home in Galien township July 15th, at the ripe old age of 78 years 9 months and 20 days.  The deceased emigrated from Ohio, to Mishawaka Ind., with his parents when a boy, where he made his home for several years.  In 1861 he came to Michigan and located on the farm now owned by Alonzo Goodenough, but later purchased the farm on which he died, the latter being wilderness, and by his own hands has produced a beautiful home.  It can be truthfully said that honor and honesty were Mr. Heckathorn's foremost thoughts.  He was a charter member of the U. B. church at Olive Branch and has always contributed liberally towards its support.  To mourn his loss he leaves an aged wife, three sons and two daughters, twenty-three grand children and three great grand children, besides his many friends.  In their great bereavement this community extends its sympathy.  The children are Mrs. S. B. Hampton, Henry, Frank and Joseph Heckathorn, all of Galien, and Mrs. John James of Bridgman, two sisters of the deceased are Mrs. Albert Althar of Mishawaka, Ind., and Mrs. Alonzo Goodenough of Galien.  Funeral services occured yesterday afternoon at two o'clock at Olive branch church and the burial at Galien.  Rev. Edward Edward, United Brethren minister, officiated and music was furnished by the church chior." The Niles Daily Star carried an obituary for Frank Heckathorn on 12 Aug 1964 and it reads:  “Frank Heckathorn Buchanan-Frank Heckathorn, 73, of Dayton, died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in his home.  He had been in ill health for several years.  He was born Nov. 30, 1890 in Galien township and married Edna Redding, who survives, March 12, 1917, in South Bend.  He retired in 1958 from Clark Equipment Co. after 30 years of employment there.  Other survivors include two sons, Albert of Niles, and Russell, Buchanan; a daughter, Mrs. Harold Rose, Buchanan; two brothers, Marvin, Three Oaks and Lawrence, Benton Harbor; six sisters, Mrs. Minnie Yaw, Mrs. Blanche Schaber and Mrs. Lena Hoadley, all of Niles, Mrs. Edith Babcock, Mishawaka, Mrs. Iva Dickey, Galien, and Mrs. Henrietta, Three Oaks; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Swem Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale B. The Niles Daily Star carried an obituary for Joseph Heckathorn on 02 May 1942 and it reads:  “Joseph Heckathorne, Dayton, Is Stricken; Services in Galien   Buchanan, May 2-Joseph Heckathorne, 61, life-long Berrien county resident, died in the farm home of his brother, Frank, four and one-half miles south of Galien, at 10 Friday night.  He had been seriously ill since Monday when he was taken from his home near Dayton to the brother’s home.   Born Nov. 24, 1880, in Galien, he is survived by his brother and several nieces and nephews.  His wife, Caroline died one year ago.  Services will be at 2:30 Monday afternoon in the Methodist church at Galien where Elder J. The Acorn carried an obituary for Malinda Heckathorn on 10 Jul 1913 and it reads:  "Old Resident Passes Away.  Mrs. Malinda Heckathorn was born Sept. 16th, 1837 and departed from this life July 1, 1913, at the age of 75 years, 10 months and 14 days, at the home where she had lived for fifty years.  She leaves to mourn her loss three sons and two daughters, Henry, Frank, Joseph, Mrs. S. B. Hampton, all of Galien township, and Mrs. John James of Bridgman, twenty-four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Carrie Eis of Mishawaka, Ind., and one brother, John Heckathorn of Cass Co., also many friends.  The funeral was held at Olive Branch church, of which she was a member, Saturday forenoon at 10 o'clock.  Rev. Mr. Ferris of the M. E. church officiated.  The pall bearers were:  six grandsons:  James, Lee and Morton Hampton, Braton, Loyd and Floyd Heckathorn.  The chior was composed of Mrs. Chas. Of Galien, Mich., Brayton of South Bend, Ind., Mrs. Minnie Yaw, Mrs. Lena Jacobson, Mrs. Blanche Schaber, of Niles Mich. Mrs. Ivah Dickey of Glendora, Mich, Frank of Dayton, Marvin of Buchanan, Chris, Henrietta, Edith and Lawrence at home, Twenty-one grand children, two great grand children, two brothers, Frank and Joseph, two sisters, Mrs. Sam Hampton and Mrs. John James; also a host of relatives and friends.  He spent most of his life in Galien township, and has lived in Three Oaks for the past three years.  Rev. OBIT - - In Memoriam-John S. Helmick was born in Warren Co., Ohio, February 28, 1823 and died at the home of his siter, Mrs. R. V.<Richard Vaughn> Clark in Buchanan, Michigan, April 25, 1903, at the age of 80 years 1 month and 25 days. He had been in failing health for more than a year but was confined to his room only six weeks previous to his death. Patiently he waited the end.

At the age of 13 years he came with his parents to the wilds of Michigan. Here he met the fate of all pioneers--many privatations, hardships and self denials, which surroundings served to prepare him for the drdour duty of performing his part in building up a civilization in his adopted home.

At the age of 22 years he returned to his former home of Ohio and on January 7, 1843 was united in marriage to Miss Tabitha Thompson. In May of that year , after earning the money to purchase a horse and a light wagon, they placed their outfit therein and started on the long journey to Michigan, where a home was carved out of the wilderness. They settled on 80 acres and erected a dwelling a few rods w. of where Mt. Tabor Grange Hall now stands. This made an ideal home by the mutual efforst of husband and wife.

One son, Allen J. helmick came to this home and was reared with every indulgence and sacrafice that fond parents could lavish. An adopted son, E. J. Helmick, resdies in Worthington, MN. They also reared an orphan ril, now the wife of William Swingle, of Shelby, Michigan.

On August 23, 1883, death claimed John's helpmate and shortly thereafter the home was broken up, since which he has made his home with his children and friends.

Two sisters and four brothers survive him. Three sisters and 1 brother preceeded him to the other world.

Brother and Sister Helmick united with the Oronko Class of the ME Church nearly 40 years ago, and entered sincerely into the work. Their home was always open and their hands and hearts always ready for their part to promoting the best interests of their chosen faith.

The funeral as held monday 2 2:00 at the Grange Hall conducted by Rev. W. J. Douglass and interment was made at Burke School Cemetery, where all the Helmicks who have died in this vicinity are buried.

Helmick, William Edward
William Edward Helmick, age 73, was found dead at his home, one mile northeast of Three Oakes, yesterday morning at 7:15 by Albert Burgoyne, a neighbor. He was found lying on the back porch of his home, apparently a victim of a heart attack.
He was born in Rolling Prairie on Sept. 4, 1868. His wife, Dora, preceded him in death in October, 1938.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Howard Burgoyne of New Buffalo and Mrs. Clarence Dunbar of Buchanan, Mich; four sisters, Miss Lott Brooks of La Porte, Mrs. Rose Rankin of Stowe, Ohio; Mrs Joe Elliott of Niles, and Mrs. Joy Brewer of Ft. Wayne, and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church in Three Oakes on Tuesday at 2 at the Methodist church, the Rev. Louis Ellinger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery with the Connelly funeral home of Three Oakes in charge.

The News Palladium carried the obituary of Clara Henspeter on 11 Jan 1954: “Mrs. Clara Henspeter Galien, Jan. 11-Mrs. Clara A. Henspeter, 63, of route 1, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Pawating hospital, Niles, where she was admitted Thursday. Mrs. Henspeter was born Oct. 14, 1890, in Royalton township, the daughter of Charles and Marie Angolin. She married Frederick L. Henspeter on Oct 29, 1910 in New troy. He died in 1944. Survivors include three daughters; Mrs. Gertrude Herman and Mrs. Margaret Breland of Glaien, and Mrs. Lillian Hauch of New Troy; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two brothers, Charles B. Angolin of Battle Creek, and Herbert Angloin of Bridgman. Mrs. Henspeter was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed church and of the Women’s Guild of that church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s church. The pastor, the Rev. Arthur J. Habermehl, will officiate. Burial will be in the Galien Cemetery. Henspeter of Clear Lake road, Buchanan, occurred late Wednesday afternoon at his home. A lifelong resident of Weesaw township, Mr. Henspeter was born in Chicago October 15, 1888, and came to Buchanan in 1890 with his parents, Christ and Alvina Henspeter. In 1910 he married Clara Angeline of New Troy, who survives him. He is survived by his widow and by three daughters: Mrs. Gertrude Herman, Niles; Mrs. Margaret Breeland, Galien, and Mrs. Lillian Hauch, New Troy. She was born in Niles, Mich., June 4, 1890, and came here 10 years ago from St. Joseph, Mich., Surviving are a daughter, Beatrice Henspeter, at home; a sister, Mrs. Thomas Elder, Mishawaka, and two brothers, Dr. Leeman Snodgrass, Philadelphia, Pa., and Harry Snodgrass, Kalamazoo, Mich. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the L. W. McGann funeral home.” On 05 Jan 1942 the South Bend Tribune carried a funeral notice for Ruth Henspeter and it reads: “Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Iva Henspeter, of 510 Lincoln Way East, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the L. W. McGann chapel with Rev. E. "John HESS a well known pioneer farmer, died last night at his home, a few miles west of Buchanan, aged about 75 years (wrong age s/b 70). Deceased is survived by eight children, five boys and three girls, one of whom, John HESS, is a resident of Niles. Two of the daughters, Mesdames John (Kathryn) Eisele and William (Caroline) Boyle, reside a few miles south of this place (Niles). The funeral will take place next Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, from the Evangelical church, at Buchanan. Interment will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan." - Charles Hess, 71, died early this morning in his home four miles northwest of Buchanan, where he was born. He was a lifelong resident of Berrien county, and son of John and Elizabeth Hess. On Aug. 30, 1905 Mr. Hess married Cora Enos of Watervliet. He had belonged to the Methodist Church for 38 years and was a member of Wagner Grange. Surviving Mr. Hess are his wife, and a daughter and two sons, Mrs. Virginia E. Harroff of Route 2, Buchanan, Ralph Hess, of the family home on Route 2, and Cpl. Charles E. Hess, with the U.S. Army somewhere in England. He also leaves a brother, William Hess of Buchanan, and a sister, Mrs. Arthur Adams of Michigan City, Ind. Mrs. Dorothy Howard - Niles—Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Howard, 49, of 709 W. Main St., Three Rivers, who died Sunday in Three Rivers Community Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Pifer Funeral Home. Officiating will be Bishop Gerald Steinbarger of the Church of Jesus Christ. Burial will be in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Summerville. Friends may call after 7 tonight at the funeral home. Survivors include her husband, Kinnie, three sons, including Bobby Joe of Niles, seven daughters; three brothers; five sisters; her mother and 19 grandchildren.

George Huff Dies Suddenly of Heart Attack - To Hold Funeral at 2 P. M. Today at Swem Funeral Home
George Huff, native and lifetime resident of Buchanan, died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack at his home at 201 Moccasin avenue at 4 p.m. Monday.
Mr. Huff had been unable to work at his trade for some time because of a physical disability, but he had apparently been in good health otherwise. Shortly before 4 p.m. a little granddaughter who was with him asked to go see a neighbor and he gave his consent. Later his son came in and heard him breathing rather heavily but thougth him asleep. Mrs. Huff came in shortly afterward and found him lifeless. He was born on a farm northwest of Buchanan Jan. 20, 1873, the son of George and Louisa Huff. He married Katherine Miller in Buchanan July 3, 1898. They lived in Buchanan and vicinity all of their married life, except for eight years spent in Baldwin county, Ala., from 1910 to 1918. He was reared on a farm three miles west of Buchanan, now the Elwood Bowerman farm. Afrter a few years of farming and farm work he entered the contracting business in cement construction. He erected several cement block buildings in Buchanan, including the building on West Front housing the Michigan Bell exchange. He was enterprising and ahd engaged in a number of ventures including starting the first Buchanan milk route selling bottled milk. Retiring about seven years ago from cement work, he bought and sold several farms. Recently he and Mrs. Huff had made their home with H. F. Kingery at 201 Moccasin. He is survived by his widow; by three daughters, Mrs. Elsie Conant of Elkhart, Mrs. Nina Madden of Niles, Mrs. Anna Kline of Sturgis; by two sons, Leslie Huff and Clarence Huff of Buchanan; by four sisters, Mrs. George Swift of Niles, and Mrs. Safronia Camp, Miss Libby Huff and Mrs Fred French of Buchanan; by one brother, Charles Huff of Buchanan; by nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Swem Funeral home with the Rev. L. E. Lee in charge. Burial will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.
