Schlack, Elizabeth nee Leunig The obituary for Elizabeth Schlack was carried in the News Palladium on 11 Aug 1943 and it reads: “Mrs. Elizabeth Schlack Dies At Daughter’s Home Mrs. Elizabeth Schlack died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William King, of Benton Harbor, Tuesday evening, after a long illness. Mrs. Schlack was born in Russia in October of 1859, making her home in this vicinity 41 years ago. She is survived by a son Edward, of Detroit, and three daughters, Mrs. Anna Heyn of Bridgman, Mrs. Augusta Bateman of Benton Harbor, and Mrs. William King. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of her son from Detroit.” No follow-up was found. Mr. Schultz was born Oct. 28, 1884, in Volinia, Poland. He came to this country in 1901 and from 1918 until 1933 lived in Sodus. Since 1933, he has resided on Hicks road. He married Amalie Hauch Oct. 6, 1906, in Benton Harbor. He was a retired farmer at the time of his death, but had formerly been employed by Saranac Machine company. He was a former member of the board of St. Matthew’s Lutheran church and also of church choir. Besides his widow, survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Madeline) Schaub, Jr., of Dowagiac, Mrs. Ernest (Norma) Langer and Mrs. Albert (Eleanor) Marquardt, both of Benton Harbor; a son, Raymond of Coloma; six sisters, Mrs. Adolph (Pauline) Wiesner of Racine, Wis., Mrs. Ernest (Emma) Glaske of Sawyer, Mrs. Lydia Rochau of Illinois, Mrs. Harold (Mildred) White of California and Mrs. Philip (Alma) Bilotti and Mrs. Arthur (Hilda) Pudell, both of Buchanan; fourth brothers, Julius of Burlington, Wis., Herman of Sawyer, Edward of Glendora and Charles of Detroit; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. BENTON HARBOR -- Zola E. Schaefer, 81, of Benton Harbor passed away Friday, May 21, 2004, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo. Zola, the daughter of William and Velma (Borton) Simmons, was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Waldron, Mich., and lived in Benton Harbor since 1946. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and loved to knit, sew and crochet. Zola is survived by seven children, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one brother, William Simmons, of Waldron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1994. Schwartz, 56, retired rural mail carrier, died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at his home on rural route two Buchanan, after suffering a heart attack.    Schwartz was born Feb. 4, 1897, in Buchanan the son of the late David Schwartz and Mrs. Ada Schwartz, who lives here. A veteran of World War 1, he had lived here all his life and retired from postal service in September. He was married June 3, 1918 in South Bend to Genevieve Steel of Galien who survives.    Surviving besides his widow and mother are: two sons, Richard L. of Buchanan, and John N. of Berrien Springs; two brothers, Virgil of Elkhart and Fred of Three Oaks; two sisters, Mrs. Rlorence Chubb and Mrs. Gertrude of Buchanan, and four grand-children.    Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Swem funeral Home here with the Rev. Lawrence -- A former Lawrence resident, Mrs Aletha L Seaburg, 83, of 101 N. 14th Street, Schoolcraft, died Saturday at Director's Hall of Upjohn Nursing Home, Kalamazoo.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 PM at Robertson-Avink Chapel, Schoolcraft; where friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 7 PM.  Burial will be in Schoolcraft Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.  Mrs Seaburg was born November 9, 1896, in Eau Claire, Michigan. Semler, retired ong-time principal of Benton Harbor high school, died at 8:18 a.m. today in Mercy hospital where he had been admitted yesterday. He was 80. ........ He retired as principal of Benton Harbor high in 1958 after 33 years of keeping a firm but knowing hand on the high school education of two generations of students through a period of particular preeminence for the institution.   Well before he came to Benton Harbor, he had been a captain in the US Army during World War I. He also served as a school principal in Mishawaka and Lafayette, Ind., previous to coming to Michigan. Mr. Semler was born in Germantown, Ind., on May 29, 1892. Shortridge --- Berrien Springs--- Funeral services were held today fo Eugene G. Shortridge, 70, prominent Berrien Springs resident who died Saturday at his home here following an illness of two weeks.     Services were held in the McLaughlin Funeral Home with the REv. George Seifert of Battle Creek, officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.     Shortridge came to Berrien Springs in 1912 from Chicago and was employed at Clark Equipment Company here until his retirement five years ago. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Kathleen Shortridge Hundt of Berrien Springs. Smart, Jacob - Niles Weekly Mirror, 3 Dec 1879 - Jacob Smart died at Herndon, Georgia, on Tuesday, the 24th of November, at half past 6 p.m., aged 75 years on the 12th of last September. He was a native of New Market, New Hampshire, and at an early day showed great skill in mechanism and was employed most of his time in making patterns for all kinds of machinery. He removed from New Hampshire to Niles in September, 1856, and went into the machine business with Messrs. Platt, Howard, & Co., and continued in that business for several years after Mr. Platt withdrew. He has now six living children, three sons and three daughters. He left here in September to spend the winter with his two sons in Georgia, Horace P. and Alfred G. Ever industrious, he was engaged in getting up a pattern of his own invention for feed work to a saw mill which his sons were about to erect. He contracted a cold and was taken suddenly ill which resulted in Meningitis and he only lived two days from the time he went to his bed. His remains arrived here on Saturday last, and they were interred in Silver Brook Cemetery beside of his wife, (who died some four years since) on Sunday afternoon last. A large number of friends followed him to his last resting place with sad hearts. He being the acknowledged genius among the mechanics a large number were present. Mr. Smart was never known to do a dishonorable act, and his motto was, “do unto others as you wish others would do unto you.” He lived up to this principle, and the writer of this having been for years his near neighbor, believes he had not an enemy on earth, for he was ever ready to do a kind and benevolent act to all within his reach. Smart obituaries contributed by Sandi Gammon - sandi.gammon@gmail.com Smart, Sarah H - Niles Democrat, 12 Feb 1876 -  Sad and Sudden Death.   We are called upon to chronicle the sad and sudden demise of Mrs. Sarah H. Smart, a most estimable and highly esteemed resident of this city. The facts connected with this sad event are of a peculiar and painful nature. Mrs. Smart had but recently returned from a visit to her son’s family, residing near Saginaw, and was complaining, more or less, from a severe attack of rheumatism, but was gradually recovering, and up to Saturday, was feeling much improved. Having occasion to go into the cellar on some errand, she slipped and fell from the top to the bottom of the steps. Her daughter, Miss Emma Smart, being at the time alone in the house, succeeded in carrying her up stairs and into her room, when medical aid was summoned, but her extreme age, being in her 68th year, together with her feeble health, would not permit of a rally, and she died Tuesday morning at 3:30.             Mrs. Smart had been a resident of Niles for twenty years, and was well and favorably known, and her sudden departure has cast a great gloom over a large and warm circle of friends, who will long remember her kindness and many good qualities of heart. The funeral took place at her late residence on Front street, Thursday morning, and was largely attended. Also - Berrien County Record, 17 Feb 1876 - Mrs. Sarah H. Smart, wife of Jacob Smart, fell down the cellar stairway of her residence on Saturday last, and died from the effects of her injuries on Tuesday morning at 4 o’clock. Mrs. Smart was 68 years old, has been a resident of this city for 20 years, and was very highly esteemed by those who best knew her good qualities. Smith, Charles Sr. BENTON HARBOR -- Charles Smith Sr. was born in Jackson, Miss., on Feb. 10, 1912, to the late Augustus and Louella Smith. Charlie lived his life. He put up a good fight until the Lord saw fit for him to come home. Charlie departed his life May 20, 2004. He was married to his late wife, James Etta (Belk) Smith in 1940, in Heth, Ark., for 47 years until she went home to glory on Sept. 22, 1987. Charlie did carpentry work. Charlie loved people. When Charlie came to Michigan he transported many people around to different places, whether it was to the doctor, the grocery store or shopping. People named him "Good Time Charlie." Charlie rededicated his life to Christ on May 4, 2004. Mitchell of Chicago and Bertha Woodson of Gary, Ind.; and a sister-in-law. Charlie also left behind 24 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Charlie had four sisters and 15 brothers; one granddaughter and one great-great-grandson preceded him in death.    Charlie's Homegoing will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 26, with funeral services at noon at Union Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, 911 S. Crystal Ave., Benton Harbor, Rev. Julius Keys Pastor. The Rev. Andrew Smith will officiate. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Taken from The Herald - Palladium May 25, 2004 edition Contributed By Genweb Coordinator 2005 Smith, George About the time the faint flush of dawn crimsoned the Eastern skies this morning, George Smith, residing on Union street, West Niles, passed peacefully away, aged 64 years.  He had been ailing for some three years.  Mr. Smith had been suffering from irritation of the spine, but was confined to his bed only one week, during most of which time he was unconscious.  Although suffering from such a terrible affliction, he never gave up work until about two months ago.  Mr. Smith was born in Kent Co., Delaware, August 21, 1834. (Cem. 1838)  He was married on October 4, 1859, to Miss Mary Brown also of Kent Co.  He resided in the vicinity of Kent county until the spring of 1870, when he moved to Cass county, Michigan, where he lived eight years, when he gave up farming and moved to this city, residing here thereafter until the time of his death.  He leaves a wife and six children, Mrs. J. H. Quick and Mrs. W. S. Trudeau, of Chicago; Mrs. Chas. M. Salee, of Marion, Ind.; Mrs. J. W. Leach, Major E. and Miss Maude of this city.  The deceased was a respected citizen and is also mourned by numerous friends.  The funeral service will be conducted at the Methodist Episcopal, of which church Mr. Smith was a devout member, at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon.  Interment in Silver Brook cemetery. Mrs. Snyder was born Jan. 22, 1891, in Springfield, Pa., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ogelbia Green. She had been a resident of the New Buffalo area for the past 28 years and was a member of the Assembly of God church, Michigan City. Surviving her are her husband, Frederick, to whom she was married on July 2, 1918 in Grand Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Jones of Battle Creek and Mrs. James Oman of New Buffalo; one son, Lawrence of Milwaukee, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Maude LaFave of New Buffalo. He was a star athlete at St. Joseph Catholic High School in St. Joseph. After graduation, he proudly served in the Army on the front lines in Europe during World War II. He received a Bronze Star. When the war was over, he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Zajac. In 1960s, they became the proud parents of daughter Cynthia. Chuck and his brother, Laverne took charge of the family grocery, Spears' Food Service, which became a major wholesale restaurant supplier for southwest Michigan. A few years after selling the store in 1975, Chuck and Ann went back into business on a smaller scale. They purchased Tudor Wholesale Meats to put their daughter through college. Several years after the loss of his beloved wife, Chuck was fortunate enough to find love again with Corolyn Latham. Loving husband, devoted father, dedicated businessman, and avid golfer, Charles Spear will be sorely missed.    He is survived by his wife, Corolyn Latham; a daughter, Cynthia (Dr. John) Brantley of Freeville, N.Y.; and a sister, Florence Burke of Bridgman, and also by a large extended family. Strunk, Michael -- An obituary for Michael Strunk was carried in the News Palladium on 20 May 946 and it reads:  “Michael Strunk Dies At Berrien Hospital.  Michael (Mike) Strunk, 77, Madison street, died Sunday at 11:30 a.m., at the Berrien County hospital, where he had been a patient for the past four days.  He had been in ill health for two years.  Surviving Mr. Strunk are a son, Martin, Packard street; sister, Mrs. Rose Gerlach, 807 Broadway; brother, Martin, Madison street; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held at the Hall funeral home in Bridgman Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Bridgeman cemetery.” Contributed by William Brackett brackettwilliam@yahoo.com Sutherland, Clarissa Ely   YOUNG WOMAN DIES SUDDENLY Mrs Nelson B Sutherland Passes Away    Ill with blood poisoning Well Known Lady Succumbs - Funeral Thursday    Leaving to mourn a husband and five children, the youngest an infant boy four weeks old.  Mrs Nelson B Sutherland died suddenly at the farm home in Pipestone.  Deceased was before her marriage Miss Clara Ely, well known in Eau Clair.  Her passing will be sincerely mourned by a large number in the community in which she was known as a girl and later as a matron.  Blood poisoning was given as the cause of death.  The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at the home in Pipestone at 1 o'clock. UNKNOWN NEWSPAPER BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN Wednesday, December 13, 1911 More About CLARISSA ELY: Burial: December 14, 1911, Penn Yann Cemetery, Berrien County, Michigan Death Record: January 10, 1912, Berrien County, Township of Pipestone, Michigan   Contributed By Kathy Warren Cleora Anstiss Roeder Straugh Obituary - July 23, 1934 to May 22, 1996 (click on image for larger view) - contributed by Brett Hardesty Sutherland, John R.   Benton Harbor - Thursday, December 22, 1904:  The death of another early pioneer of Berrien county occurred yesterday when John R Sutherland passed away at the home in Pipestone at the age of 72 years.  The cause of death was paralysis.  Mr Sutherland was the last of a family four boys and three girls.  Born in Broom county, New York September 8, 1832, he moved with his parents to Michigan at the age of eight years.  Married Mary A Shippy, October 5, 1856, moving the same year to the farm in Pipestone where they have since resided.  A wife, five sons and two daughters survive.  One of the sons, Aubrey D is the money order clerk in the post office here.  The funeral will take place at the home at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon, with burial in Pen Yann cemetery.  Penn Yan Cemetery: Location:  Bainbridge Center Road, between Napier and Meadowbrook Roads. Contributed By Kathy Warren   Sutherland, Nelson B. N.B. Sutherland  Hartford - Nelson B Sutherland, 78, a former Benton Harbor man died at the Shimer Rest Home in Watervliet, at 6 P.M. Wednesday.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Taken From the Harold Press:  October 4, 1945 Sutherland Rites To Be Held In Hartford, October 5 Funeral rites for Nelson B. Sutherland, 78, will be held Saturday at 2 PM at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford.  The Reverend Lester Clough will officiate and burial will be in Penn Yan Cemetery.  Sutherland, a former Benton Harbor resident, died at 6 PM Wednesday at the Shimer Rest Home in Watervliet.  He was born February 23, 1867 in Pipestone township, the son of Joh n and Beverly Sutherland.  His wife died in 1911.  He is survived by three daughters and one son, Mrs Aletha Seaburg, London, Michigan; Burton Sutherland, South Bend; Mrs Inez Jones, Elgin, Illinois; Mrs Pauline Gilbert, Benton Harbor; two brothers, Charles Sutherland, Sister Lakes; John Sutherland, Benton Harbor; and sister, Mrs Ida Clawson, South Bend. The two persons mentioned above were nearly related, and while the two deaths were in differnt homes they were from one family, and the remains of both buried on the same lot. The funeral services of Mr. Swank were conducted by Rev. J. F. Bartmess, of this place, and that of Mr. Bryant by Rev. Mich. August 6, 1846, and died at her home in Niles township, May 31, 1901, aged 51 years, 9 months, and 25 days. She was married to Mar. George Swink April 4, 1878, at the home of Andrew C. Day, in Buchanan. Her life was devoted to make her home a pleasant place. She leaves a husband, son, two sisters, and three brothers. ‘Sister Carrie thou hast left us And the loss we deeply feel, And if God has thus bereft us He will all our sorrows heal’ The funeral services were held Sunday at ten o’clock, at their home, conducted by Rev. J. F.
