Umphrey, Peter - Buchanan Record, Thursday, August 16, 1894, p. 2 column 4 New Troy
Peter Umphrey, an old resident of Weesaw township, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 1894. He was born in Germany, in 1810, and lived in Bainbridge township, this county, five years, moving to Weesaw in about 1844 or 1845, and has lived in the village of New Troy for the past 23 years. His wife survives him and is 90 years old. He also leaves three daughters - Mrs. J. Hough, near Buchanan, Mrs. Severs and Mrs. Gotlip Kool. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 o'clock p.m., in the Mormon church. (Notes: "Mrs. J. Umphrey, Mrs. Peter - Buchanan Record April 11, 1895 pg. 2 New Troy - April 8th
Mrs. Peter Umphrey, an old lady, is not expected to live until to-morrow. She is over 90 years old. Old age seems to be the main trouble. Skipping down one paragraph in the New Troy section of the same date: April 9, 1895 - Mrs. Peter Umphrey died yesterday aged 92. They moved to Michigan in 1838 and to Weesaw township in 1842. She was probably the oldest person in the township at the time of her death.

Upson, Clyde
The Niles Daily Star carried the obituary of Clyde Upson on 09 Dec 1947: “Clyde W. Upson, 53 Buchanan, Dec 9-Clyde William Upson, 53, 701 South Oak street, Buchanan died at 1 p.m. Monday at Pawating hospital, Niles. Born April 26, 1896, in Berrien Springs, he was the son of Mrs. William Upson of Berrien Springs and the late William Upson. He was employed by the Hattenbach Coal and Ice company until about two years ago. He married Eva Huff on Oct. 30, 1915, in St. Joseph and they had one daughter. Besides his widow and mother, he is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Rollie Diethrich, Buchanan; a sister, Mrs. Cora Brackett, New Troy; and a brother, John Upson, of Berrien Springs. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swem funeral home, under the direction of Reverend L.E. Lee, pastor of the First EUB church, Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.” Note: EUB stands for Evangelical United Brethren.

Upson, Eva nee Huff
The News Palladium carried an obituary for Eva (Huff) Upson on 24 Feb 1970 and it reads: “Mrs. Eva M. McAffee Buchanan-Mrs. Eva M. McAffee, 68, 311 Sylvan avenue, Buchanan, died at 11:15 p.m. Monday in Niles Pawating hospital. She had been ill since last October. Mrs. McAffee was born May 16, 1901, in Pierceton, Ind. On Oct. 30, 1915, she married Clyde W. Upson in St. Joseph. He died Dec. 8, 1947. She then married William D. McAffee Aug. 24, 1951, in South Bend. He preceded her in death April 29, 1961. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rollie (Georgia) Diethrich of Buchanan; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Julie Cozad of Portage, Ind.; two stepsisters, Mrs. Kennety (Gladys) Zinninger and Mrs. Dwight (Allene) Crumley of Buchanan; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Swem funeral home, Buchanan. The Rev. Keith Laidler, pastor of the Faith United Methodist church, of which she was a member, will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Society.” DOD 23 Feb 1970. She was first married to Clyde Upson and is buried next to him as Eva Upson.

Upson, Jennie nee Harner
The Niles Daily Star carried the obituary of Jennie Upson on 10 Oct 1952: “Mrs. Jennie Upson, 75 Berrien Springs-Mrs. Jennie Upson, 75, a lifetime resident of Berrien County, died Thursday morning in Benton Harbor’s Mercy Hospital following an illness of one day. She had resided in this village the past 12 years at the home of a son, John Upson, 201 East Broadway. Funeral Services will be held in the McLauchlin Funeral Home here at 2:30 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. E.A. Walden, of the EUB Church, officiating. Burial will be in Weesaw Cemetery at Glendora. Other survivors include: a daughter, Mrs. Walter Brackett, New Troy; two brothers, Charles Harner of Buchanan, and Jerry Harner of St. Joseph; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.” Note EUB stands for Evangelical United Brethren.

Upson, Nelson
The News Palladium carried the obituary of Nelson Upson on 06 Jul 1955: “Nelson Upson Funeral services were held this morning at 10 o’clock at the Reiser Chapel for Nelson Upson, 82, of 474 John Street. Mr. Upson died July 2 at the Berrien County hospital, Berrien Center, where he had been a patient six weeks. The Rev. Walter Butgereit, pastor of the Superior Street Church of gad, officiated at the rites, Mrs. B.J. Reiser was the organist. Members of the GAR attended the rites in a group. Casket bearers were Thomas Grey, A. Howard, Basil Fish, Thomas Davis, Alvin Seel and Joseph Melle. Burial was in City cemetery, St. Joseph. Mr. Upson was born in St. Joseph, Jan. 10, 1873, and had lived in this vicinity all his life. He is survived by a niece, Miss Grace McAllister, of Benton harbor, and several grandnephews.”

Upson, Verna
The Niles Daily Star carried the obituary for Verna Upson on 10 Mar 1938: “Verna N. Nelson, 35 Prominent Farmer Near Buchanan Dies Buchanan, March 5.-Stricken by meningitis, Verna Nelson Upson, 35, Hills Corners farmer, died at midnight in Warren clinic, Michigan City. A lifelong resident of the community west of Buchanan, he was born Dec. 9, 1902, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Upson. His marriage to Linda Fatter, who survives, took place April 12, 1930. Other survivors are two children, William Edward and Peggy Elberta, at home; the parents; a sister, Mrs. Walter Bracket, New Troy, and two brothers, Clyde and John Upson, Buchanan. The Rev. C.A. Sanders will conduct the service at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon in Hills Corners church, followed by burial in Weesaw Cemetery.” Note: The lead to this obituary should read Verna N. Upson not Verna N. Nelson.

Upson, William
An obituary for William Upson was carried in the News Palladium on 28 Dec 1929 and it reads: “Will Upson Dies At Age Of 71 Yrs. Will Upson, 73, passed away Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at his home, 119 Bond street. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Slaughter’s chapel with Rev. Walter Butgereit, pastor of the Church of God, officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview cemetery, St. Joseph.” This was William Upson son of Gates and Elizabeth Upson.

Upson, William E.
The Herald Palladium carried the obituary of William E. Upson on 23 Aug 1939: “William Upson, 61, of Baroda, Dies On Tuesday Baroda, Aug, 23-Ill for five years, William Edward Upson, 61, died Tuesday at 3:15 o’clock in his home. He leaves his widow, the former Jennie Harner, two sons and one daughter, also 10 grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. He was born Nov. 3, 1877 in St. Joseph. The children are Clyde Upson of Buchanan, John Upson at home, and Mrs. Cora Brackett of New Troy. A son, David died eight years ago and a daughter, Verna, one year ago. The brothers and sisters are Nora McAllister, Nelson Upson, Benton Harbor, and Carrie Osborn, Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday in the Swem Chapel in Buchanan, where the body will lie in state until the hour of the rites. The Rev. C.A. Sanders will officiate. Burial will be in Weesaw cemetery near Glendora. Six nephews of the deceased will serve as casket bearers.” Note: Verna Upson was his son not a daughter as this obituary states.
