"Old Time Schools of
Berrien County"

boy doing math

Updated August 31, 2015

Oh those days of yesteryear when time stood still and we had not a care in the world.
Playing Jacks, touching the sky on the swing, shooting marbles and most important, learning our ABC's.

We are collecting old graduation rosters for 5th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade graduates on or before 1960.
Also, if you have school photos, class pictures or even one of the old school buildings, I will add them here.
Donating information to the BERRIEN COUNTY MIGENWEB, keeps that file in perpetual viewing condition for generations to come.
You can reach me at - berrienmigenweb@yahoo.com or William Brackett with any additions or corrections.

Old Watervliet High School
The first graduating class of three were out of a little frame two room building that sat just west of the main corner of Main St and St Joseph.
On the North side. There is a gas station on that lot now. Just to the West of that, where now is the site of a Laundromat, in 1890
they built what is considered by most to be the first school. It was four rooms, brick structure, and cost a whopping $4,750.
In 1897 they added five rooms. It housed students up until 1924 and was finally tore down in 1933.

In 1924 they built a new school across the street on the South West corner of Main and St. Joseph. For a cost of $250,000.
It saw students from K-12 until 1954 when the North and South Elementary schools were built. Then continued untill 1967 as a High School.
And a few years after that as a Middle School. It was abandoned in 1977 and finally tore down in 2004.

In 1967 they built the high school that is still being used today East of the city on St. Joseph St.
