HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE ARTICLE ON ELIAKIM ANDERSON
Eliakim Anderson, a prosperous and well-to-do citizen of this county ..... engaged in the pursuit of agriculture in the township of Kinderhook. He has a very fine farm here, situated in the southeast quarter of section 14. Mr. Anderson is a native of New Jersey, born in the town of Danville, Morris County, Sept. 26, 1832. He is of Scottish origin. His great-grandfather, Eliakim Anderson, being a native of Scotland. He came to America in early Colonial times and settled in New Jersey. His son, Eliakim Anderson, grandfather of our subject was born and reared in Morris County, N.J. The father of our subject, Eliakim Anderson, was born on his father's homestead, and in his early manhood married Miss Amy King, a native of Morris County, born in Hanover Township. In 1867 Mr. Anderson came to Branch County. He resided here until his death, November 12, 1885, at the advanced age of ninety years.
Mr. Anderson has been married twice. The maiden name of his first wife, to whom he was united Jan. 24, 1854, was Martha Depew, of Columbiana County, Ohio. By her death in November 1881 ...... Eight children were born to this union, three of whom are still living -- Eugene, Sophia & Minnie. The names of the deceased are: Laura, Mattie, James, Franklin & Birdie.
The second marriage of our subject took place Feb. 6, 1882, Mrs. Emeline (Norton) Stephenson. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 13, 1835, the daughter of Trumbull Norton, a native of Massachusetts. Her father married in Jefferson County, N.Y., Lois Alger, dau. of George Alger. Mr. & Mrs. Norton started their journey west in 1829. She and her husband continued to reside in their homestead in St. Joseph county, the father dying around 1850, and the mother in 1839. Their dau., Mrs. Anderson, has been twice married. Her first marriage, in January 1856, was to Robert Stephenson. He was born in LaGrange County, Ind., Jan. 8, 1835, son of Daniel & Eliza Stephenson. The spring following his marriage he located in the town of Gilead, Branch County, where he bought land in connection with his father. He eventually ended up in Coldwater in the butcher and provision business. His death occured in April 1878. Five children were born to this union: Kenneth, James, Cora and Grace. Lucian, the first born is dead.
