Older portion of Sumnerville Cemetery in Alphabetical Order. If you have additional information or photos of the stones in any of the Cass County Cemeteries, please contact me at   cassmichigangen@yahoo.com - Deanna West - Cass County Michigan Coordinator.

This information was gathered by examining old records and maps and a physical inventory of the cemetery. The records, as such, of the burials in this section dating back into the 1830's were not passed on to the Pokagon Township, if indeed they ever existed. The records that exist today were collected mainly by looking at the tombstones in the cemetery and recording the information. Not all graves are marked; therefore, a number of burials in this section of the cemetery will not be recorded in this list. Every effort has been made to include all the information that is currently available into this list, but it is NOT complete nor totally accurate.

Almost as soon as the early settlers arrived in the area, there was a need for a place to bury those friends and family members who died. Many family or neighborhood cemeteries started in this way. The original beginnings of the Sumnerville Cemetery are not known. From the early burials of one person next to another by the date of interment suggests that single burial sites were sold and not cemetery lots. Later lots were sold and family members were buried together, but initially they were not.

Note: Numerical rows run North and South
Alphabetical rows run East an West to form a Grid
