Charlevoix County is located in the western portion of Michigan's "tip of the mitt;" right about the finger-nail of the ring-finger of your left hand (palm down) when used as a basic layout for Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Between 1840 and 1841, internal survey lines were completed for the region which would later be known as Charlevoix. The county was originally organized in 1840 as Kesk-kauko, named for a great chief of the Saginaw tribe. The county's name was changed to Charlevoix in 1843 in honor of Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, a Jesuit missionary of the French colonial era.
In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Michigan Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Michigan, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web site. These efforts merged into today's MIGenWeb Project. Several Michigan counties are available for adoption. Please volunteer to adopt a county or to supply data you wish to share.
