Benjamin Walker ELLISON, a resident of Boyne Falls , died Sunday evening, Feb. 23, and was buried at Boyne Falls cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Ellison was born at Leeds, Yorkshire , England ; June 20, 1841. In the year 1846 he came to America with his parents and settled at Wheeling , Va. Soon afterward they moved to Cleveland Ohio where he met Miss Alice Cutler, and in 1863, was married. He then moved in the year 1864 to Montcalm county, Michigan . In 1865 he enlisted in the 16th Michigan Infantry and served in Tennessee to the close of the war. In 1874 he came to Charlevoix county and took a homestead in Boyne Valley township, where he had since resided. Since his discharge from the army, Mr. Ellison has been a constant sufferer from the infirmities contracted while in the service. Deceased leaves a widow and three sons. The widow and eldest son, Samuel D. Ellison, are living on the farm. William A. Ellison resides at Detroit , and Enock C. Ellison resides at Boyne City .

SUBMITTER’S NOTE: Benjamin Walker ELLISON’s parents were Walker ELLISON and Margaret COOPER. His step-father was William HUDSON. Benjamin ELLISON died while a resident of the Northern Michigan Insane Asylum in Traverse City , Grand Traverse County . His wife, Mary Alice, died on February 27th, only 4 days later, in Boyne Falls .

Mrs. E. K. ROBINSON, wife of County Surveyor Robinson, after a long and painful illness, extending over several months, was finally summoned hence on the 14th last. Mrs. Robinson was a very old resident, together with her husband was one of the first settlers in the eastern part of this county, some 20 years ago. She was a worthy Christian lady, whose loss will be felt by the entire community; no effort in the cause of religion was without the hearty support of herself and husband. She was buried from the Presbyterian church here last Sunday morning, the Rev. J. Redpath conducting the services. The funeral cortege that accompanied the remains to their last resting place was a very large one. This beautiful April day, the bell that had often summed this faithful one to prayer, then sent its notes sadly and solemnly over the quiet valley while the sunshine fell softly through the stained glass of the chapel as if listening with the congregation to the solemn words, "I am the resurrection and the life, he that believieth /sic/ in Me though he were dead, yet shall he live," and the solemn funeral hymn which floated out upon the air. In the budding spring time there must always be death, but who can tell but that the heart so still, has awakened to the glorious and eternal springtime of another life.

SUBMITTER’S NOTES: Mrs. Enoch Kimball ROBINSON was born Annie HUDSON circa 1846 in England to William HUDSON and Margaret nee COOPER. Margaret was previously married to the late Walker ELLISON. Annie’s half-sister, Mary Maria ELLISON, later married Enoch K. ROBINSON.

Died at her home on Division street , Thursday afternoon at 2:30. Mrs. A. E. MARTIN, aged 70 years; 2 months and 15 days. Mrs. Martin was taken sick about six weeks ago the trouble starting with a cold which developed into pneumonia followed by quick consumption, owing to her advanced age, was unable to withstand the attacks of the disease and succumbed to her infirmities after five weeks of terrible suffering. She leaves besides her stricken husband three children, Mrs. Florence Ross of this city, Wm E. Dawson and Mrs. Ralph Krist of Cleveland , Ohio , and one brother Walker Ellison of Boyne Falls . The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Rea officiating. Undertaker Stackers will have charge of the obsequies, and interment will be in this city.

Marian Maria Ellison was born Sept. 10, 1839 in London , England . At the age of seven she came with her parents to this country, the family going to West Virginia to make for themselves a home in the wilderness. From West Virginia the Ellisons journeyed to Cleveland Ohio , where in the year 1846 [sic] the subject of this sketch was married to James Dawson. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson lived for many years in Cleveland , and it was there that the four children were born, one of whom, Lilly, passed to the great beyond in tender years. After Mr. Dawson's death his widow married Mr. E. K. Robinson of Boyne Falls , and came to that village, where for many years she lived, honored and respected by the whole community. The death of Mr. Robinson occurred seven years ago at Boyne Falls , and Mrs. Robinson came to this city to make her home. She built a small house next to that of her daughter, Mrs. Ross, on Terrace Street , and lived there for four years, brightening and cheering the lives of everyone with whom her quiet life brought her in contact.

On the 20th of June 1906, she was married again in the evening of her life to A. E. Martin, and for these three years, Mr. and Mrs. Martin have lived together in harmony, and love, cheering for each other the downward path of life's journey.

Mrs. Martin was up to the time of coming to Boyne City a member of the Free-Will Baptist denomination. Shortly after her removal here she became a member of the First Presbyterian church, and as long as her health permitted was a regular attendant at divine service and a zealous worker for the church. She was an everyday Christian and the beautifying influence of a pure religion were spread over a life and character pure and without spot.

Among us all she ranked always as a woman of culture, refinement and sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and true friend.

SUBMITTER’S NOTE: Mrs. A. E. MARTIN was born Mary Maria ELLISON on 10 Sep 1839 in Yorkshire , England . Her parents were Walker ELLISON and Margaret COOPER. Her brother’s name was Benjamin Walker ELLISON. After Mary’s first husband, James J. DAWSON, died in Ohio , she married her late half-sister’s husband, Enoch Kimball ROBINSON. After his death she married a third and last time to Arthur E. MARTIN.

Simon M. Rose, 88, former civic leader, a retired businessman and pioneer resident, died Monday at the Charlevoix Hospital where he had been a patient for several days.

Masonic funeral rites were held at the See Funeral Home Wednesday. Burial was in the Brookside Cemetery.

Mr. Rose was born in Casco township, Allegan county, March 6, 1862 and came to northern Michigan in 1868. He was a barber by trade and operated a shop in Petoskey a short time before coming to Charlevoix. When he retired in December, 1943, he had been in business for 60 years.

He was also a deep-sea diver as well as a Great Lakes sailor. He laid the first water main across Pine River in 1882 and also operated tugs and other vessels on the Great Lakes. He held his master’s paper on the lakes.

He was a village trustee and when Charlevoix was incorporated in 1905 he became the first alderman in the second ward. He served as mayor in 1908 and again from 1917 through 1921. He was also a member of the board of supervisors.

He was active in fraternal orders and held memberships in the Masonic and Eastern Star lodges. He was also a member of the Blue lodge and has been a high priest in the Royal Arch Order and a member of the Knights Templar.

He is survived by his wife Lizzie Campbell whom he married at Elk Rapids Jan. 22, 1885; three grandsons, Hal, Jack and Mason who all reside in California and several great-grandchildren. His only son Mason, preceded him in death.

Mrs. Elizabeth Rose, 88, widow of S.M. Rose, early civic leader and Charlevoix businessman, died in her sleep early Wednesday at the Melling nursing home in East Jordan where she has been a patient since October.

The body was brought to the Pontius Chapel here to await funeral arrangements.

Born in Alden, Michigan, January 6, 1867, the former Elizabeth Campbell, daughter of William and Isabella Campbell, was married to Simon (Sam) M. Rose at Elk Rapids on Jan. 22, 1885. They resided in Petoskey and East Jordan before coming to Charlevoix in 1894 to make their home. Mr. Rose who died Sept. 11, 1950, played a mayor role in the early history of Charlevoix. He laid the first water main across Pine River in 1882 and later served as second ward alderman and mayor. He was a barber by trade and retired seven years before his death.

Mrs. Rose was a life member of the Charlevoix Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by three grandsons, Hal, Jack and Mason Rose, all of whom reside in the Los Angeles, Calif., area, and several great grandchildren. Her only son, Mason, preceded her in death.
