Mrs. Joseph Houle (Olivene Rivard)

Submitted by Al Trudeau

My great-grandmother, Mrs. Joseph Houle (Olivene Rivard), died in Cheboygan on 20 August 1912. Below is a copy of the obituary that appeared in the Cheboygan Democrat Newspaper at that time. The copy is from a microfilm from the Library of the State of Michigan: E-2, Index 4009, 12-2-10 to 4-18-13.

The obit, as it was written, has a couple of errors. First, her parents were Augustin (not Angus) Rivard and Lucie Milette, and they lived at Three Rivers (Trois Rivières) Québec, not Ontario. Also, she was born at St-Barnabe, Québec, on 22 December 1847, not 25 December. - Al Trudeau

The following obituary appeared in the Cheboygan Democrat, Cheboygan MI, Fri., 23 Aug 1912, p. 9:

MRS HOULE DEAD

Mrs. Joseph Houle, of the Second Ward, passed away at her home on north D. street on Tuesday morning August 20th, at about half past nine o'clock, after an illness dating back about four years, and much of which time the lady had been confined to her bed.

The funeral was held from St. Charles church on Friday morning, and the remains laid at rest in Calvary (cemetery), a great number of relatives and sorrowing friends being in attendance to pay their last respects to a dear mother, a kind friend and neighbor.

Mrs. Houle's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Angus (sic) Rivard and lived at Three Rivers, Ont. (sic) where she was born 63 years ago last December the 25th (sic). She was married while yet in her teens to Mr. Houle, and they lived at Three Rivers for a number of years afterward, coming to this city about 27 years ago, and they have since made this their home, living all the while in the house where the very profitable life came to an end on Tuesday last.

To Mr. and Mrs. Houle were born ten children, seven of whom survive with their father, they being George, the eldest and who now lives at home. Angus, who is married and lives on C street; Fred, Bennie and Henry all of whom live at home and will most miss their mother's care and presence, and the two daughters are Mrs. Adalore Mageau, of this city, and Mrs. Frank Trudo also a resident of Cheboygan.

The family is well and favorably known, and the mother whose departure we are obliged to chronicle possessed a great circle of friends as was testified to in the great profusion of floral gifts sent as tokens of regard and respect.
