The following transcription is from a small notebook in the Bayliss Public Library manuscripts collection. It seems to be a city census of some kind, possibly in compliance with a state or federal census survey. Although neither the date nor the name of the recorder is given in the book, it was part of a collection of miscellaneous Barbeau papers and probably belongs to that collection.

The first column of the book is unlabeled and usually has either a checkmark (represented below by an "x") or a "Void" listed. Names are mostly alphabetical. but entries at the end of the record are out of order and may have been added after the main survey had been completed. All data is recorded as written in the notebook. Entries whose spelling is uncertain because of handwriting are encased in brackets: [ ].

UPDATE: Dave Goodrich wrote to suggest that the census is for Sault Ste. Marie in the early to mid-1800's. I agree. Many of the names below can be found in an early American Fur Company Retail Store ledger in the Steere Room at the Bayliss Public Library. Dates covered by the ledger are 1838-1840, so the census was probably conducted between 1838 and circa 1850.
