Notes for FELICITE PAYMENT: Felicite never did get married, instead she devoted her life to the 'JESUIT PRIEST' at Garden River, Ontario/Canada When she died, the Priest wrote this in their books. 'FELICITE WAS HIGHLY RESPECTED BY ALL, AND THE JESUIT PRIEST GREATLY HONORED HER.' In her days, when you took on the job as a housekeeper in the Priest home, you were not allowed to be married. They took a vow of chasity. Today married couples takes turns wuth getting the Altar ready for Mass and what ever else that has to be done. Miss Payment was 71 uears of age, went to Sugar Island ten miles from the Soo, 38 years ago, to her brother and has since been a mother to his children, caring for them as tenderly as if they had been her own. she removed with her brother to Detroit eighteen years ago, and thence to Bay City. She has always been a consistent Christian lady and notable in all works of charity, being an especially friend to the poor and distressed, who will sadly miss her kindly and gentle ministrations. Richards, west of Chetek, February 1, 1916, Margaret Richards, aged 80 years, 2 months and 4 days. "Gramma" Richards, as she was lovingly called by everyone, was born November 28, 1835, at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was united in marriage to Joseph Richards, April 15, 1854, who preceeded her in death, fourteen years ago. To this union was born six children; Georgianna; Walter; Helen; Florence; and Fred, four of whom are left to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Three years ago she was stricken with an illness from which she never fully recovered and a severe attack of grippe a month ago proved fatal to her. Mr. and Mrs Joseph Richards were among the pioneers of Barron county, coming here about 45 years ago, and located on a homestead near Hillsdale, and enjoyed an extensive acquaintance throughout the county. After her husband's death she continued on the farm about eleven years, and after suffering a bad fall some three years ago has made her home with her son Fred. Her husband was a Cival war veteran. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday, conducted by Rev. Geo. E. Griffith of the Presbyterian church, and the remains were laid to rest in the family lot at Barron beside those whomhave gone before. DELPHINE LAMBERT' Mrs. Delphine Lambert passed away Saturday night at the home of her son Francis Payment - 807 Spruce Street, and was buried from St. Mary's Catholic Church this morning at 8 o'clock. Mrs Lambert has lived in the Soo for nearly 80 years and is well known and highly esteemed by many old citizens here. Although 88 years old, Mrs Lambert had seldom been ill and had always been very active up to the time of her death. She was taken ill last Thursday suffering with paralysis. After the funeral services in the church the body was taken to Riverside cemetery where interment was made. **************************************************************************************************************** After her first husband died, Delphine remarried Edward Lambert, it was interesting to find out Ed was also a boat builder in the Soo, just like her first husband Francis X. Payment, most likely this is how they met. Delores Hall met with Alice McLean and she said Delphine always wore an apron and carried pink wintergreen mints, so when any of the little ones would stopped by, they got a treat from her. It was also said that Ed Lambert made a model ship for the Soo Centennial and that Delphine took brances from the tree and would carve real little people, sailers and all, and even dressed them for the model. It was on display for the centennial, most likely the Soo Locks still has it in their position. Ed's first wife was Lucille Boissineau and her ansestors built or helped build the first Catholic church in Soo Ontario. It was stated Joseph Boissineau was a gifted carpenter and wood carver, he did beautiful carvings for the Catholic Church on Queen Street. The artist blood line continued on thru generations upon generations, not only with the Boissineau familys but also the Payment generations. Notes for NICHOLAS PAYMENT: From Soo Evening News obituary we find: Mr. Payment had been sailing for thirty years with the Pittsburgh Steamship Company.He was a year on the William D. Dickson when he died. He was 68 years old and was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, until the past twenty-five years he had lived in the Soo. Mrs. Nicholas Payment of Cleveland was visiting in the Soo when she received word of her husbands sudden death from geart failure in Fairport, Ohio. Mrs. Payment had returned home for the first time in twenty-five years. Surviving are the widow and two sisters Mrs, Edward Pink of Massachusetts and another sister in Vanderbilt. The body was brought back to the Soo. Mr. Payment was a member of the Holy name Society and the St. John de Baptiste society. Funeral services for Nicholas Payment will be held Saturday at 8:30 a.m. St. Mary's Church, burial will be in Riverside cemetery. The body of Mrs. Paymentm widow of the late Nicholas Payment of Cleveland, who died in 1929, is being removed to the Sault. Payment was a steady young man and was employed on the locks. He belonged to the numerous Payment family, was a brother of Frank X. Notes for JOSEPH PAYMENT: August 15, 1891 Page 1 Death of Old Joseph Payment Grandfather Joseph Payment, who resided on Sugar Island opposite Garden River for forty years, died last Sunday morning, aged 89 years. He came to Sugar Island from New York state about the time his brother began operations on the island. Mr. Payment leaves three sons, four daughters, and numerous relatives, among his children are Mrs. E.J. Penny and Miss Vic Payment. His remains were interred by Undertaker Blacke at the old homestead on the island. ***************************************************************************************************************** Delores Pinder and her daughter Joanne; from the Boissineau family came from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada on the day of our 2nd Payment family re-union to meet some of her long lost relatives. She leads from Joseph Croshiere who married Claire Payment. She brought over a newspaper that was in the canadian Soo paper about "PENNY'S HOME ON SUGAR ISLAND" I rewrote the article and have this article in my book that I started my research on back in 1970. The problem was nobody knew Mrs. Penny was the daughter of Joseph Payment, so we lost a whole story here, as at the time the house was torn down. Joseph Payment's picture hung on the wall. The items in the house had been there since Joseph and his brothers and other family members built the home. Notes for ADOLPHUS PAYMENT: From RHINELANDER PRESS - RHINELANDER, WISCONSIN - Saturday July 16, 1913 AL PAYMENT DEAD Well known Camp Foreman Succumbs to Blood Poisoning Al Payment, for many years camp foreman for Langly & Alderson, died at St. Mary's Hospital Sunday evening. Mr. Payment who in recent years has resided near Mercer was troubled with a small absess in the nose which he had treated by a physician. In some manner infection was incurred and he was brought to the hospital Friday with a well developed case of Blood-poisoning. All efforts to overcome the infection proved unavailing and death ensued. The funeral was held at St. Mary's Church Tuesday morning followed by interment in Catholic Cemetery. Among the friends from out of town, who attended were Mr. and Mrs. McHon, and the latter, from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mr and Mrs. Daniel Shea of Merrill, and Mr. Skud of Ironwood. Notes for MICHAEL GEOFFREY PAYMENT: The art of 'FURS" is what brought many of our people from Montreal to the United States. Michael was once involved in the Fur trading business. I read this in a book of "ROMANCE IN MUSKEGON" I felt it kind of proper to put it here. A GOOD DRINK COULD BUY ALMOST ANYTHING OF A RED MAN WHEN HE WAS THIRSTY, AND SO SOME OF THE TRADERS MADE A PROFIT OF FROM 600 TO 700 PER CENT. LANMAN DESCRIBES THE COSTUME OF THE COUREUR DE BOIS AS FOLLOWS: "The ordinary dress of the white portion of the Canadian French traders was a cloth passed about the middle, a loose shirt, and a red milled or worsted cap. The half-breeds.....sometimes wore a surtout of coarse blue cloth, reaching down to the mid leg, elk-skin trousers, with the seams adorned with fringes, a scarlet woolen sash tied around the waist, in which was struck a broad knife, to be used in dissecting the carcasses of animals taken in hunting; buck-skin moccasins, and a cap made of the same materials as the surtout." One could just about take a piece of paper and start drawing the above person the writer has just explained. G. Payment, Once the King of Sugar Island, Dies at Bay City. Old residents of the soo will be pained to learn of the death of M.G. Payment, at Bay City. A very full biographical sketch appeared in a Bay City paper, from which the following was taken: M.G. Payment, passed peacefully away at 1:05 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his residence on the southwest corner of Campbell and Johnson Street, in the 80th year of his age. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence and the remains will be interred in the family lot in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Bay City. Services will be held at the house by Rev. J.S. Holmes, pastor of the first Baptist Church. "Deceased was born at Point Claire, near Montreal P.Q. january 20, 1812. After completing his education he was engaged in mercantile business at Montreal and Vaudrueil, and in 1837 he removed to Detroit, where he established trading posts with Lake Superior, Mackinaw and Sugar Island. In 1840, he was united in marriage to C.Edesse, the oldest daughter of Dominique Riopelle, a young lady of wealth and accomplishments, who died at Sugar island in 1850, at the age of 30 years, leaving four young children, the youngest an infant daughter two died at the age of six months. Miss Rose Payment, sister of the deceased, made her home with her widowed brother and his three sons until her death, which occurred in Bay City in 1888. In the 80th year of his age. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence and the remains will be interred in the family lot in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Bay City. Services will be held at the house by Rev.J.S. Homes, Pastor of the First Baptist Church. Deceased was born at Pointe Claire, near Montreal, P.Q. Jan. 20, 1812. After completing his education he was engaged in the merchantile business at Montreal and Vaudreuil, and in 1837 he removed to Detroit, were he established trading post with Lake Superior, Macckinaw and Sugar Island. In 1840 he was united in marriage to C. Edesse, the oldest daughter of Dominique Riocelle, a young lady of wealth and accomplishments, who died at Sugar Island in 1850, at the age of 30 years, leaving four young children, the youngest daughter an infant daughter, who died at six months. PAYMENT: SELF - INFLICTED INJURY - cause the death of F.C.PAYMENT in DETROIT, MICHIGAN Had been in Ill-Health and was Despondent **************************************************************************************************************** January 6, 1898 - THE BAY CITY TRIBUNE Many people in Bay City will be shocked and surprised to learn of the death yesterday morning of FRED C. PAYMENT at St. Mary's hospital, Detroit, as a result of injuries inflicted by his own hand while temporarily insane. The deceased came to Bay City over 30 years ago with his father who gradually accumulated considerable real estate in the Tenth ward in the vicinity of Belina Street. A few years ago the father died at the age of 82, leaving the son in charge of the property. The latter had been employed as clerk in various grocery houses and was known as a capable salesman, but in handling the property placed under his care he met with reverses, finally selling out every-thing, and early last summer, being out of employment, he removed to Detroit. There he did not meet with better success, and a couple of months ago, hearing of a vacant position here he returned to take it, but arrived only to learn that it had already been filled. He was then in rather feeble health and his ill-luck seemed to prey upon his mind to such an extent that his friends soon began to fear that his reason was departing. During his few weeks sojourn here he was constantly despondent, going so far on more t! han one occasion as to intimate that he would take his own life. Shortly before the holidays he became so ill that relatives sent for him and placed him in St. Mary's hospital in Detroit. Sunday he stabbed himself in the neck with a knife. It was thought at first that he would recover, but yesterday morning his condition changed suddenly for the worse and death soon ensued. He was aged 52 years, and a widower, his wife having died several years ago after a brief union. The remains will be brought to Bay City for burial. The Detroit News says this about suicide: 'SISTER FRANCIS SAYS THAT BEFORE PAYMENT WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, THE CITY PHYSICIAN ASKEF IF THERE WERE ANY OBJECTIONS TO RECEIVING A PATIENT WHO WAS SUFFERING FROM DESPONDENCY. SHE REPLIED THAT THERE WERE NONE IF THE PATIENT WAS QUIET, BUT WHEN PAYMENT WAS BROUGHT TO THE HOSPITAL DID NOT KNOW THAT HE WAS THE MAN IN QUESTION.' The sister in charge of the ward in which Payment was placed said that he appeared at times to be deranged. Sunday evening one of the hospital patients noticed Payment in a closet, and saw blood on the floor. The attendant found him with a cut on the left side of the throat. They could not find the knife, and do not know where he procure fit. After the wound was sewed up and bandaged, Payment wanted to tear the bandages off. Dr. Payment, the dentist at 83 Woodward a venuel is a brother of the deceased. He had a long talk with him a week ago, and says that he was suffering from temporary insanity. Notes for FELIX MOISE PAYMENT: We found a Moses Payment of Sugar Island, who died at the age of 17, succumbed to consumption on Sunday evening January 2, 1896 (Page 10). He was buried Tuesday morning in the Island cemetery at 9 o'clock. (Looks as thought they did not find his body right away, or was not able to identify him. As this article came out in the Saturday paper January 9, 1897 (Part 1 Page 2) Said he died on Sunday, which means he had to have died the week before. With a bullet in his brain and the revolver with which the fatal shot was fired still clasped in his hand, the lifeless body of andrew Payment was found in his house on Eureka Street shortly before noon today. Coroner Edgerton r. shepley was notified and drove at once to the scene. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Jacob Vanderhook and aninquest will be held. The family of Louis Paquette, living next door became suspicious, as Payment was not seen about the place and nobody seemed to know anything about his movements. The last seen of him was Saturday. The doors of the house were locked and nobody answered when neighbors knocked on the door. Mr. Paquette notified officer, Michael Elligot, who called up Chief of Police Edgar J. Swart. Officer Louis Miniclier was sent to the house and they found an entrance. The man's body was found on a bed in the front room of the little house. Clasped in one hand was a 32-calibre revolver, evidently new. Five cartridges were contained in the cylinder, all containing bullets with one exception. The pillow covered with blood and from the look on the dead man's face it is believed he died with-out a struggle. Before laying down to take his last rest he took off his shoes and placed them on the floor beside the foot of the bed. By the side of the shoes was a pint whiskey bottle, which contained but a good sized drink. appearances indicate that he drank a large quantity of the liquor before firing the fatal shot. It is believed Payment shot himself some time Saturday night, as the body was cold when found. The bullet remained in the head. During the past few years Payment had been employed on the locks as a lineman. He was an erratic turn of mind and friends believed he was mentally unbalanced. He was recently tried by the circuit court before Judge Steere for taking indecent liberties with a young girl and convicted. Sentence had not been pronounced and it was understood in court circles that the supreme court was to be asked for an order for arrest of judgement, as his attorneys wished to move for a new trial. The man led a lonely life. He was unmarried and lived in a small house on Eureka street, the building containing two rooms. In the rear room he did his cooking and washing, while the front room served as a parlor and bedroom. The house is well painted and while not large is better than the many small houses of the city. Coroner shepley held a conference with Procescuting Attorney John P. Conrick after viewing the body. ENT: From the Soo Evening News: 52-YEAR OLD MAN TRAPPED BY FIRE, DIED FRANCIS PAYMENT SUFFOCATES AS FLAMES DAMAGE HIS HOME ON JOHN STREET - BOILING TAR While endeavoring to reach the kitchen door after being aroused by smoke and flames, Francis Paymentm 52 of 1222 John Street collapsed to the floor between the stove and the kitchen sink and died of suffocation early Saturday night as the interior of his home was destroyed by flames. The fire started from a pail of tar which boiled over on the kitchen stove where boiled over on the kitchen stove where it was being melted. It is thought Payment put the tar on the stove and then lay down on his bed and perhaps fell to sleep. When he awoke the house was filled with heavy tar smoke. While endeavoring either to reack the sink to get water to put out the fire, or an effort to get to the back door, he was overcome by the smoke and fell to the floor where he was later found by Fire Chief Frank Trombley. Payment lived aklone his wife having died about three months ago. When the fire department arrived at Payment's John Street home at 7:30 Saturday night, the house was filled with heavy smoke. A stream was directed through one of the rear windows. Thomas Butler, U.S. Immigration patrolman who lived nearby, told the fire chief that he believed Payment was in the house. Chief Trombley, his face covered with a mask, fought his way through the smoke to the bedroom, but could not find nothing there. He came out for a breath of air and re-entered the house, finding Payment stretched full length on the floor, with his arm over his face. He was dressed only in his underwear and shirt. Mr. Payment was born on Sugar Island, June 28, 1878, and had lived in and near the Sault all his life. He is survived by two brothers Felix and Albert, both of the Sault, and three sisters Mrs. Angeline Bell of Bell's Point, Mrs Addie(Anderson) of Ft. Mr. Payment leaves three sons, four daughters, and numerous relatives, among his children are Mrs. E.J. Penny and Miss Vic Payment. Marie, Canada on the day of our 2nd Payment family re-union to meet some of her long lost relatives. She leads from Joseph Croshiere who married Claire Payment. She brought over a newspaper that was in the canadian Soo paper about "PENNY'S HOME ON SUGAR ISLAND" I rewrote the article and have this article in my book that I started my research on back in 1970. The problem was nobody knew Mrs. Penny was the daughter of Joseph Payment, so we lost a whole story here, as at the time the house was torn down. Joseph Payment's picture hung on the wall. The items in the house had been there since Joseph and his brothers and other family members built the home. It stated Edmund immigrated in 1873 at the age of 27. Now the census in 1900 shows Edmund to be 50 years of age; if he arrives in 1873 and was 27 years of age. Something is wrong here - right? Edmund was listed as working for the City. Said they were married for 25 years. Which means he married about two years after arrival. emily was born in New York, so the question is did they meet in New York and married there??? Generation No. 3 8. FRANCOIS XAVIER7 PAYMENT (FRANCOIS XAVIER6, FRANCOIS XAVIOR5, JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, PIERRE LARIVIERE! 2, PIERRE PAYMENT1 LARIVIERE) was born 29 Jan 1849 in Rigaurd, Quebec, and died 04 Dec 1920 in Sault Ste, Marie, Michigan. He married HENRIETTE HARRIETTE ROBERT 01 Feb 1869 in Immaculate Heart, Garden River, Ontario, Canada, daughter of JEAN ROBERTSON and MADELEINE LESAGE. She was born 16 Aug 1847 in Drummond Island, Michigan, and died 05 May 1929 in S! ault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Notes for FRANCOIS XAVIER PAYMENT: Francois Xavior Payment was quite a carpenter in his days; they said he often made sleighs in the winter, for the neighbor children, and just gave them away. Many fires hit a few of the Payment family homes, my parents had two house fires, this is where they lost there pictures, so history and pictures were distroyed. ***************************************************************************************************************** This came out of the Soo Evening News on F.X.'s obituary: When the earthly life of F.X. Payment, age 72, came to an end at his home in East Spruce Street. Sault Ste. Marie lost not only one of its esteemed citizens but it lost virtually its only remaining boat builder - a man who for more than two scores years phed his trade in his little shop near his residence 807 east Spruce Street. Mr. Payments' death was due to an abcess which had formed in his head and which brought on paralysis. The funeral services will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. with burial following in Riverside Cemetery - Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. "Knowing F.X. Payment all my life, I want to say that he was one of the most honorable men I have ever met." F.W. Roach told the News today, and the sentiment is the same as has been expressed by many other who knew him most intimately. The largest vessel built by Mr. Payment was the government tug, "West Neebish" A large number of small craft which yet ply the river are the pruducts of his skilled labor. The coming of the automobile, which superceded the river craft tp a large extent, severely crippled the boat building business and that fact, together, with advancing age, practically put a stop to a work in the little shop of Mr. Payment. The birthplace of Mr. Payment was in Montreal. He came to the Sault when he was five years of age. Surviving members of the immediate family are his wife and two sons, Charles and Frank of Sugar Island. The two sons were at the bedside when death came. **************************************************************************************************************** Their is a stained glass windown, located behind the Altar of St. Mary's Church that was donated by F.X. Payment, it was said he helped build the Altar and most likely many hours of his talents of carpentry also went into the building of the Church. What is interesting is how the carpentry trade or work of art thru wood led on down thru further generations. Mr. F.X. Payment was not listed in a book written by Susan Payment, but just before her work went into print, Delores (Payment) Hall of Muskegon did contact her and gave her several Payment's names. She did not even know that Payment family's lived in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Plus their was a large Payment family that grew up near Traverse City, Michigan, this Payment, who was also Francois Xavior Payment, was a cousin to F.X. Payment, and apparently he came with the family from Montreal to New York, where he remained and joined the service, once out moved his family onto Traverse City. I hope to share this with you in this book. Joseph Payment was a brother of F.X. Payment, his family also remained in New York, except for a son, Philibert Payment, he made his home on Sugar Island, Michigan. Once Joseph's wife, Emily passed away he returned to the Soo and moved on to Sugar Island with his daughter Victoria, who was a school teacher, once Joseph passed away, Victo! ria moved on to Detroit to remain with her brother Moses, til she died.You can see the strong family ties here. After a year's illness with cancer. She was the widow of Frances S. Payment. Mrs. Payment was born on Drummond Island, August 16, 1847. She was the Mother of two sons, Charles of this city and Frank of Barbeau, both of whom survive. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mrs. Payment took a keen interest in church affairs and was known as a kindly neighbor and friend of the poor. She was a member of the League of the Sacred Heart. Harriet also ran a boarding house where her husband built boats. The boarding house was for men who worked at the Union Carbide Plant. What is interresting in 1976 Delores (Payment) Hall and her husband bought a home in the Lakeside area of Muskegon, Michigan, it wasn't til later they learned the Gramma had a boarding house their, for men who worked at the Paper Mill. Once they got up and went to work she would change sheets and get it ready for the next shift coming off from work. They say History repeats itself, Delores did not make her home into a boarding house, but once her children started to leave, abd she had a vacant bed-room, she and her husband would take in elders who were without a home. Cecil Alexander lived with them for eight years. When Francis and Haenretta got married they were witnessed by a Joseph Lesage and Mary Lesage. Payment was born in Detroit, Michigan, June 10, 1842. His Mother, Catherine (Ades) Payment, was born May 27, 1820. His father, Michael G. Payment, who was born in Canada, January 20, 1814, was early thrown upon his own resources, with a minited education. From the age of fourteen to the age of twenty-four, he held a position as clerk in a dry-goods store, receiving one dollar a month. In 1827 he went to Detroit, and found occupation in the dry-goods house of Buchard & Co., situated on the corner of Woodward and Jefferson avenues. Here he made himself useful to his employers that, in one year, they gave him an interest in the business; and, at the early date, dispatched him with a cargo of goods to Lake Superior. On the voage, he encountered very tempestuous weather; and, to save the vessel, was obliged to throw a great portion of the cargo over-board, this sacrificing the hard earnings of years. Not at all discouraged, he returned to Detroit, and starte! d with another cargo, for Mackinaw, on Lake Huron. He exchanged his goods with the Indians, at different points on the coast, for furs and other commodities. He then settled, about the year 1844, on Sugar Island, and commenced the life of a farmer. He then disposed of his interests in that region of country, and returned to Detroit in 1874. He has sinces retired from business, and removed to Bay City, where he now resides. Owing to his father's life among the Indians, R. C. Payment had few educational advantages. When fifteen years of age, he attended for three years, Notre Dame University, Indiana. Returning to the family home at Sugar Island, he took charge of his fathers business, which he managed successfully until 1870. He then went to Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan, where he remained three years, en! gaged in the drug business. After selling out his interest, he removed to Hancock, on Lake Superior, and engaged in the same occupation. One year later, he removed to Detroit, and, in connection with Mr. Dennis Robert Bogue, who belonged to an old French-Canadian family, opened a drug store under the firm name of Bogue & Co. Payment's attempt to sell Donovan's picture arouses latter's Ire. R.C.Payment, the artist who made a picture of Judge Donovan without an order from the judge and who roused the judicial ire by showing the grey hair and whiskers the judge possesses and which he disdains to mention because they show advancing age, threatens now to auction off the judge's picture. If the price of it is not forthcoming soon. THIS IS PAYMENT'S STORY "Judge, I've made a picture for you. I'd like you to come over and see it some day." "All right, Mr. Payment, I will. Very thoughtful of you." "Why I always thought of you, judge, I worked pretty hard for you during the campaign. If it hadn't been for me you wouldn't have been elected. You had a recount as it was. "Oh, I'd a got it all right," somewhat testily. "I don't know, judge, it was a pretty close shave." "Say, Mr. Payment, here are $2. this is not to go on the picture, mind you. No, that's all right. Keep it and buy yourself something nice." "thanks, judge, be sure and come to see the picture." Judge Donovan did go to see the picture. "What!, he shrieked, "That gray whiskered thing me!@ that 80-year-pld vagabound me!" "Why, judge," gasped Mr. Payment, "I just had Judge Brooke here and he says it's an excellent likeness. He says I ought to get $100 for it." "Brooke" You! A hundred dollars! Let me get at that hoary headed caricature and put my foot through it. My whiskers gray! My head bald! My brow furrowed! Say.!" And so the judge went away protesting against the libel in art. Payment sent numberous letters. In one letter the price is $30. In another the judge can pay just what he thinks is reasonable. A dozen pictures were sent to the judge by the anxious artist, but to them all came only this one reply: "SHALL NOT SHOW IT - OWN IT - CLAIM IT - DID NOT ORDER IT (as yuo know). IF I FIND IT WITH A FRIEND, I'LL ASK HIM TO DISTROY IT. DON'T TELL ME MORE OF IT OR BOTHER ABOUT IT. NEVER KNEW ONE IT REMOTELY RESEMBLED." Payment replied that the next thing he knew was that Detective Fenton came to him and threated to arrest him for violating the postal laws annoying the judge. Payment advised the officer to arrest him quick, but Fenton did nothing beyound warn him, the artist. George A. Sylvester, 74, a long-time resident of Chippewa county, was found dead Tuesday, September 29, 1942 at 3 p.m. by a neighbor at his home in Brimely. A farmer, Mr. Sylvester until a few years back, had operated a farm near Fibre for 22 years. Francis made rowboats; skiffs and small launches - from wood he sawed himself. Francis died 30th of August 1938 at the War Memorial Hospital in the Sault, he had been ill for about six weeks. Death records shows cause of death 'BLEEDING OESOPHAGUS' From the Soo Evening News Obituary of 'FRANK PAYMENT' Frank Payment, 68, well known in local marine circles for many years as a boat builder, died at the Memorial hospital this morning August 30, 1938, at 4:15, after an illness of about six weeks. Mr. Payment, who retired from boat building to take up farming at McCarron about eight years ago, had not been in good health for about a year. Death was a result of complications, following several operations. Many of the boats, motor and steam tug types, built by Mr. Payment when he was in business alone and when he was in business with his father, the late F.X.Payment, are still in use on the Great Lakes. The former boat builder, born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, is survived by his wife; seven sons; Elie; and Fred of Barbeau; Thomas; Russell; Clifford and Oliver of the Sault; and Lloyd of Detroit; and three daughters Mrs John Maleport; Mrs. Arthur Stevens of the Sault and Mrs Colen Hyslop of Marlett, Michigan. One lady recalls, she went over their often to play with the children and was ask to spend the night, but Frank had to bring her home during the night, as she cried and cried and wanted her family. From the Soo Evening News - obituary we find: Mrs. Zoe Payment died at 1:00 a.m. Sunday, June 27, 1943, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Calvin Hyslop, 918 Maple street of complications incidental to age. She was born at Kincarden, Ontario, July 15, 1868, and was the widow of the late Frank Payment. She is survived by sevens sons: Clifford of Detroit; Eli; Fred; Thomas; Also surviving are three daughters Mrs. John Maleport; Mrs. Calvin Hyslop; and Mrs. Arthur Stevens; all of the Sault and a brother Albert Lessard of Montana. The body lies in state at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Maleport, 1209 Seymour street, where prayers will be said Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at St.Mary's church. Interment will be in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. Cause of Zoie's death was ruled - CHRONIC MYOCARDITIS ************************************************************************************************************** A grand-daughter to Zoie, Arlene Egert said she recalls Zoe living with them, that they lived over a grocery store. As a matter of fact, Arlene was sleeping with Zoe, when show got up the next morning found Zoe had died in her sleep. A daughter to Zoe, Olive Payment worked at a bar, she could not recall the name but something that sounded like the :bucket of blood: She recalls Zoie wanted Olive to bring her a pickled egg and a beer when she got off work. Arlene was also told Aunt Olive seemed to be Zoie's favorite. We as parents love all our children, we try not to show favortism, and don't really feel we do, but in the eyes of some of the other children, they feel neglected, for this we are deeply sorry, for sure it was not our intention. Zoie's hair was white and had it cut in a dutch boy style. The shipping season ended in December and started up in April, so it looks like Eli turned his resignation in early May and did not return for the 1935 season. Notes for ! amefirst RUSSELL CHARLES PAYMENT: When I was about five years of age, my parents bought a 'FISH MARKET" 1115 Ashmun Street - Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Down in the basement he had his smoke oven for smoking of fish. Chubs was one of the most popular ones I remember. Dad would soak his fish in "Salt brine" Dad told me one time he would test the salt brine with an egg. When the egg was floating on top, that meant enough salt had been added. He then cleaned the fish and the fish was soaked over night in the salt brine. What I remember is the customers would line up down stairs and buy the fish right from the oven. they would also buy some beer. so a bottle of beer and eating fresh hot smoked fish, topped the list. but then the State stepped in and said the fish had to be refrigerated before it could be sold, that distroyed the smoke fish business big time. Dad in time sold the oven, where he smoked his fish, to Charlie McGahey out in Kinross, Michigan. I remember going for a ride with my parents one day, we drove to Kinross and my Dad saw his oven out back in a junk pile. this kind of made my dad sad, but said, "Oh well it is his to do with what ever he wanted to do with the oven." In November, 2003 It was great seeing the article in the Sault Tribe Newspaper "KID'S SMOKE FISH AT TRIBE'S CULTURE CAMP" Josh Homminga was one of the teachers of the art of smoking fish. Bud Biron was seen showing the youth how to tend the fire to keep the flame down and make enough smoke for the fish. I don't recall seeing a picture of my Father taking fish out of the oven, but I'm sure there must be one around. My brother Russell Jr said he sure recalls them days as he had to work with Dad more so then me, my job was washing of clothes and dishes and cleaning house and making dessert for the Sunday dinner. Dad later built an "ICE HOUSE" where he sold ice out of. Dad would take a trip over to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada to get the ice, again Russ or Gary would go with Dad, not me. I still have one of Dad's "ICE TONGS" Man you should have seen him handle the ice, it was like picking up paper, he just made it so easy. My daughter Lisa spent a few days helping grampa Payment work around the ice house. We have a picture of this for proof. Dad as well as his brothers were all carpenters in one way or another, they learned this trade from their his father, who learned his trade from his father. I recall the first Payment coming across from France being a carpenter by trade. So the art of the hammer was well drilled into the family lines. My son wrote to me one day when he was in the Marines, he said he wanted to thank Dad for teaching him to work with a hammer. Payment, 119 West 11th Ave., died at 1:30 a.m. today at War Memorial Hospital after an illness of six months. Mrs. Payment was born in Sault Ste. Marie June 18, 1903, and was a lifetime resident. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, the Daughters of Isabelle, St. Michael's Circle andn Royal Neighbors of America. She was married in 1922 in St. Mary's Church to Russell Payment, who survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Robert Wayne Payment of Weaverville, Calif.; Leo and Russell Payment Jr, both of Sault Ste. Marie, and Gary L. Charles Jr said, "JUST THINK I ALMOST WASN'T BORN" ***************************************************************************************************************** From the Soo Evening news obituries we find a Charles Patrick Payment of 806 Cedar Street - Lockmaster of the St. Marys Falls Canal, died at his home at 8:30 Sunday night following an illness that had its beginning when he fell at his work, a year ago. Charles spent all his life in the Sault having been born here i 1875. He started to work on the locks September 13, 1909, as a laborer, and served until the spring of 1925 when he was made lockmaster. His death brought to a closeing of his 21st season at the locks. You will also find he leaves behind his widow - Julia; two sons Charles abd Hoyt, all of the soo and one Sister Elizabeth Gingrich of Detroit and one brother Frank of Barbeau. Elizabeth does not show up in any census with his parents Harriet and F.X. Payment, but we later learned, Charles was adopted by Francois and Harriet, Elizabeth, apparently was old enough to get married, rather than be adopted out. Charles real Mother was a Sister to F.X. Payment, Isabelle Payment who went by Belle. Belle was married to David Tate who drowned and his death she took very hard, so in helping out his Sister, a decision was made for the adoption. Belle later married Ben Pritchett and when she died Elizabeth was with her. Notes for MADELEINE PAYMENT: When I first started digging into the family tree, I wrote to Madeleine, mainly because I knew when we was in High School that Garth MacMaster and I were cousins, but we did not know the hows. We really didn't care, just being cousins were great to us. Madeline sure did fill me into the family History, I wrote to her often and she answered me right away. She ask me to help find who her grand father was, as she knew Francois Payment and Harriet Robair was his adopted parents. I later learned that Francois's sister Belle Payment had two children out of wed-lock, at least to date we have not been able to find a marriage on her, we did find one later on and they had a son Rolland, and her husband Dave Tate drowned in a tug-boat accident. Through more research we found her grand father's Babtism, but it does not list a father. so it is unsolved at this time. Belle again married Mr. Gingrich and she is buried in Alma, Michigan. Madeline Margaret MacMaster passed away at Tendercare Nursing Home on June 13, 2004. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on November 14, 1911 to Charles and Julia (Stack) Payment. She graduated from Loretto Academy in June of 1930. On May 13, 1931 she married Gordon R. MacMaster. Madeline was a life-long parishioner of St. Mary's Pro-Catherdral Church, Madeline and her husband owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store on East Spruce Street for 30 years. She enjoyed family gatherings, outdoor family Happenings of snowshoeing, skating, picnics and especially outings with her family to the cabin along Ankadosh Creek on the shore of Whitefish Bay. She was a compassionagte Mother and friend to all she met. Picking berries was an important tast with the family, I guess this is why my Mother loved picking berries, brought us into this style of living and I did this quite often with my family, as a matter of fact my girls are married and still go berry picking, they said they loved doing it when they were young and hope to pass this love on to their children. Two years ago I went blue-berry picking with my Daughter Debbie and her kids, Mickalee, our Grand-daughter was three years of age at this time, she had been walking around putting a berry or two into her bucket, all of a sudden she spotted my bucket, full of blue-berries, she looked at her paid, looked at mine, looked around to see if anyone was watching her and decided to set her pail down and pick up mine, but I said, 'OH NO YOU DON'T, gramma worked hard on that pail, she just laughed and went on her merry way. Harry moved to Canada when he was quite a young lad and worked for the Department of Highway at Agawa Bay, Ontario, Canada until he retired in his 60's. Notes for OLIVE ADELINE LEWIS: Olive was quite a busy person, when she was younger she was invloved with Daughter's of Isabella; the Blue Star Mother; the church guild of St. Isaac's Catholic Church; St. Joseph's and as well St. Mary's. In the early 70's she started taking notes at meetings with the Soo Tribal. Her Mother and her Grand Mother made quilts and this art was passed on down to Olive. Like all Grand Mothers, we make them when each and every one of our Grand children are born, or family members getting married, her art work is spread out with many. Delores Hall graduated with Olive's Daughter Beatrice. They did not know how they were related, just that they were related and this made it all OK.
