Background Many years ago, in an effort to get World War I (WW I) veterans to apply for
benefits, Chippewa County officials sent out letters to all known WW I veterans
and asked each veteran to fill out a form which described their service record.
Forms which were returned to the county clerk were then typed up and assembled
into a two-volume set. Service records were arranged alphabetically by township,
then by the name of the veteran. A copy of this set was given to the Bayliss
Public Library (BPL). As part of their many volunteer projects at BPL, Gail Pratt and Marjorie Cooper
transcribed the basic information given in each record of the books and entered
the data into an Access database. This database is now being converted to HTML
for display on the Web. Some records included only name and township where the
veteran resided at the time of his enlistment. Other records included information
on their service -- where they trained, battles engaged in, etc. Because of
the complexity of some of the service records, service information was not included
in the database. Individuals who want copies of the original record from the
set need to contact the reference librarian at Bayliss
Public Library (remember to supply the name and township of the veteran!).
Please be advised that BPL may charge a copy and/or mailing fee: Bayliss Public Library Disclaimer Records included in this collection were not checked for accuracy by the county
clerk, so they should not be considered official legal documents. For official
records, researchers should contact the branch of the military in which the
veteran served or the National Archives. Want to Help? If you have additional information on individuals listed in this transcription,
