Introductory notes

According to Sally Landreville’s book, The Early History of Drummond Island With Sketches and the Summer People (Northwind Publishers, 3rd edition, 2002, page 16), the earliest Drummond Island township records, begun in 1856, were destroyed by fire in the 1950s. Flooding destroyed other township records in 1977. The oldest records now remaining in township hands (held today at the Town Hall and at the Drummond Historical Museum) date from 1883.

When Judy Melvin, current Sexton of Drummond Island Township Cemetery, assumed her job around the year 1993, existing burial records were contained in two “rather rough record books that were far from complete and [had] many wrong entries.” She set about compiling the records in a new log book. Her sources included searches of the actual cemetery (“plot by plot and stone by stone”), voter registration lists, birth records, death records, burial permits, obituaries, and other public documents and private inquiries. In the interests of preserving the history of the people of Drummond Island, the following is a faithful compilation of these current burial records as transcribed by me, Michelle Stone, in July 2002, and as updated in 2003, 2005, and 2008. In several cases these records provide vital information where no gravemarkers exist.

Although these compiled burial records must not be considered a primary source document, as they have been compiled from various and unknown sources at undetermined times, they nevertheless represent the most complete collection of burial records for Drummond Island available, as well as much information concerning birth dates, etc.

These burial records list individuals as being buried in the OLD and NEW sections of DRUMMOND ISLAND TOWNSHIP CEMETERY (situated adjacent to each other along the east side of Townline Road, north of Four Corners/Sune’s and south of Maxton Road); the CATHOLIC CEMETERY (located just north of the “New” section of Drummond Island Cemetery, next to St. Florence Catholic Church); the FINNISH CEMETERY (located on the south side of Johnswood Road); the SEAMAN FAMILY CEMETERY (located on Maxton Road on the site of the old Seaman homestead in the old Drummond Settlement, a few rods behind the current location of the Drummond Island Historical Museum); and elsewhere as indicated.

Also note that the designations of “Sr.” and “Jr.” here do not mean the individuals necessarily had the same middle name, nor are the individuals so designated necessarily father and son, mother and daughter. Accuracy or completeness of the records is in no way warranted, although all care has been taken to proofread and eliminate obvious mistakes.
