Mercy I thought Id write to you
On your birthday a line or two
You are now a woman, but beware
For youthful feet there is many a snare
Eighteen years have past away
They see but like a summer day
So swiftly down lifes gentle stream
Just like a story or a dream
God has been very good to you
Hes strewed your path with roses threw
May you threw life his goodness prove
And dwell forever in his love
Farther mother kind and true
Thus far they have been spared to you
Watched over you with tender care
Take their good council and prize there prayer
Should trials in your path appear?
Look to the strong and never fear
The savior you have choose in youth
Will guide you in the way of truth
I am glad that in lifes early youth
You have chosen the better path with truth
Wisely has shunned the broad way
And choose the one, the endless day
Mercy, I am growing old they say
I am sixty-six next birthday
Once more my child before I die
I would direct thy thoughts on high
O may thou climb those higher skies
Where storms and sorrows never rise
And when we meet beyond the river
Meet there to part and no more forever
Now I must close with love to you
Tis from your Grandma ever true
When these lines you chance to see
O this dear child remember me
Your loving Grandma
