Hugh Henshaw
Hugh
Henshaw passed away at his home in Petoskey on Feb. 16, 2004.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 23, 1909, Mr. Henshaw received his high
school diploma from the Ohio Military Institute (OMI) in Cincinnati. He earned a
bachelor of arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1930, and then
returned to OMI as a faculty member teaching a variety of courses and serving as
conductor of the marching band. For several summers, Mr. Henshaw attended the
National Music Camp at Interlochen, where he played cornet. Band music become a
lifelong passion for him and he often recalled playing for John Philip Sousa at
Interlochen.
In
1933, Mr. Henshaw received a master's degree in education from the University of
Michigan, where he also met and married his wife, Beatrice Schmitt, from
Petoskey.
The couple then settled in Cincinnati, where Mr. Henshaw rejoined the OMI
faculty and they built and operated one of the first motels in Cincinnati. By
now, though, Northern Michigan was in Mr. Henshaw's blood and the couple
developed and operated the Petoskey Motor Court at the corner of U.S. 31 and 131
in Petoskey as a summer business. They operated both establishments along with
Mr. Henshaw's teaching until the mid-1940s.
In 1947, they decided to settle halfway between Cincinnati and Petoskey and
built the Stage Stop Motel in Ann Arbor, where they raised their three children.
The motel, with a real stage coach on the front lawn, became an Ann Arbor
landmark.
Upon retirement in 1979, the Henshaws came back to Northern Michigan to live
near Good Hart on 18 acres that became a family gathering place during the
summers. As the security of living in town became more important, they began to
spend most of the year at their home in Petoskey.
Mr. Henshaw is survived by his wife, Beatrice; two sons, Harry Henshaw of
Monkton, Md., and Philip Daniel Henshaw of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Henshaw's daughter, Wandalie, passed

Friends may contribute to a memorial fund in Mr. Henshaw's name dedicated to the
efforts for world peace led by Bishop Thomas Gumbleton, St. Leo's Parish, 4860

did not know he was there until he heard him holler, said Mackinaw Chief of
Police Louis Conant. "Mr. Grames was in his blind spot". The
truck was
backing up at about a mile an hour. The truck knocked Mr. Grames down and
then a wheel ran up onto his body. Mr. Grames was still alive when the
accident happened about 11 a.m . He was put in the police ambulance and
brought to the Community Memorial Hospital at Cheboygan, but he died in the
