Mrs. Linda K. Adams, 27, of 3655 Lakeview, Albright
Shores, died Sunday, August 26, at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann
Arbor, of leukemia. The former Linda Gransden was born August 20, 1946, in
Midland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gransden of Edenville. She and
Richard D. Adams were married January 30, 1965. A graduate of Meridian High
School, Mrs. Adams was a member of the Billings Missionary Church.
Surviving are her husband, Richard; a son Robert,
and a daughter Pamela; her parents; and a brother Jerry in the U.S. Air Force
in Germany.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the
Billings Missionary Church, with the Rev. Neil Keyes officiating. Burial will
be in the Billings Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ware-Smith Funeral

Cindy Alexander, 19, of 1688 South M-30, Gladwin,
died Monday, March 27, in the Midland Hospital Center following a long illness.
Born in Detroit on April 3, 1958, she attended Detroit schools before moving to
Gladwin County in November of 1977.
Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Dorothy Alexander of
Gladwin; her father, Sammy Alexander of Detroit; one sister, Denise of Gladwin;
2 brothers, Sammy Jr. of Detroit and Joseph of Gladwin; her grandfather,
Stewart McLay of St. Clair Shores; and great grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Shumway
of Gladwin.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Mathews

suddenly Thursday, Nov. 2, 1995 at 3953 Pine St., Beaverton. Bom April 4, 1977
in Flint he resided in Gladwin County for the past 3 years since moving from
Lansing. Mr. Alexander had been employed by Pioneer Pole Buildings in Clare.
Surviving are one son, Gary Walker Alexander of Bay
City; his parents, Richard and Kristy Alexander of Flint, and Gary and Bonnie
Hannahs of Beaverton; 4 brothers, Richard, Shane, Jesse and Donnie; one sister,
Tiffany; his grandparents. Dale and Joann Yott ofBeaverton; and his
great-grandparents, Nick and Josephine Fischer of Reese.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Hall

Hugh B. Allan, 86, of 2217 Estey Rd., Beaverton,
died Saturday, Aug. 6, in the Clare Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in
Yale on July 30, 1891, he came to Gladwin County in 1912. Mr. Allan was a
retired farmer.
He was married to the former Birdella Umbenhoger on
December 3, 1937, in Warsaw, Ind. Besides his wife, he is survived by one
brother, William of Yale.
Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Hall

July 3 after a long illness.
Born in Yale on May 17, 1886, he had been a resident
of Gladwin County since 1912. He was engaged in farming.
Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Fisher,
of Branden Castle, Fla.; and two brothers, William R., of Yale, and Hugh B., of
Beaverton.

evening, September 4, 2002 at MidMichigan
Medical Center
- Gladwin. He was born January 10, 1919 in Ann Arbor, son of Floyd J. and Mary L.
(Pratt) Allen. He graduated from High Schoo in Ann Arbor
and attended Cleary Business College.
Neil retired from Wirtz Manufacturin Co. in Port Huron
and moved to the Beaverton
area in 1970.
He
is survived by his son, Paul (Cheryl) Allen of Fowlerville; two sisters,
Lucille "Pat" (Paul) Bennett of Midland, and Marguerite Kelley of
Chelsea; one brother, Dr. Laurence E. Allen of Arizona; 11 grandchildren, 11
great-grandchildren; his caretaker for many years, Virginia McPhail of
Beaverton, and her children, John Massaro of West Monroe, New York, Michael
Massaro, Donna Bentley and Mark (Nancy) Massaro, all of Beaverton.
In
addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, David Allen. Funeral
services took place at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002 from the
Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 West Wheeler Street,
Midland. Rev. Dr.

Alex Ashley, 82, died Saturday at his home in
Billings Township after an illness of two years. Born on August 30, 1879, in
Canada, he came to Gladwin County to farm 34 years ago. He was married to the
former Grace Pykett in Tipton, on Nov. 20, 1905.
Survivors include his widow, Grace; two sons,
Clifford, of Beaverton, and Joseph, of Farwell; four daughters, Mrs. Idella
York of Troy, Pa., Mrs. Lda Wardell of Harrison, Mrs. Lillian Nelson and Mrs.
Louise Pipoly, of Farwel; two brothers Joseph, of Northville, and Louis of
Dundee; four sisters, Mrs. Bigalow, Mrs. Addie Bartrum, and Mrs. Bernice
Dennon, of Northville, and Mrs. Mamie Davis, of Kewadin; 21 grandchidren and
seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the
Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. Ross Tracy officiated and burial was in Billings

Mrs. Grace E. Ashley, 99, of 2729 South M-30,
Gladwin, died Thursday, April 7, in the Gladwin Nursing Home following a long
illness. Born in Bridgewater on March 4, 1878, she came to Gladwin County in
1928 from Harrison. The former Grace Pykett, she was married to Alex Ashley on
November 17, 1905, in Tipton. He preceded her in death on August 19, 1961.
Surviving are 3 daughters, Mrs. Ida Foor, Mrs.
Lillian Nelson and Mrs. Louise Pipoly of Farwell; 2 sons, Clifford of Gladwin
and Joseph of Farwell; 22 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. One
daughter, Idella York, preceded her in death.

Harold J. Ashley, 51, of Gladwin, died Sunday, May
25, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Gladwin after a short illness.
Born May 31, 1945 in Billings Township, Gladwin County, he lived here all his
life. He had been employed by Clare Saw Mill as a laborer. Harold married the
former Virginia Brownell, July 16,1983 in Midland.
Besides his wife he is survived by three
step-daughters, Melody Pease and Donna Lawson, both of Gladwin, and Amy
Harpster of Coleman; one brother, Kenneth of Beaverton; two sisters, Idella
Mogg of Coleman and Shirley Dillon of Clare; and 12 grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Lyle and Richard.

1916, he was retired from the Detroit
and Mackinaw Railroad. A veteran of World War II, he moved to Gladwin County
three years ago from Tawas. Mr. Bailey was a member of the American Legion Post
274 in Oscoda.
He was married to the former Florence
Zaranko on July 28, 1945, in Detroit.

Saturday, Sept. 5, in St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw, after a short Illness. Born in Saginaw Dec. 1, 1939, he moved to Gladwin
County in September 1955 from Saginaw. Mr. Bierd had been
a grinder operator for Nodular Foundry in Saginaw
since 1969. He served in the Army from 1962 to 1964 and was a member of UAW
Local 668, Saginaw.
Mr. Bierd and the former Darlene Wray were married July 26, 1968, in
Pinconning.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son,
Kelly Benson of Bowie, Md.; one daughter, Paula King of Detroit; his father,
Bill Bierd Sr. of Beaverton; his mother, Jane Bierd of Bay City; one brother,
Jack of Chiefland, Fla.; and 2 sisters, Mrs. Rose Benmark of Toivola and Mrs.
Cindy Nix of Beaverton.

Gerald W.
"Jerry B" Bierschbach, 82, of Beaverton,
died Thursday, June 14, 2001 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Born April
14, 1919 in LAnse, he was the son of Arthur and Erma (Picard) Bierschbach. He
lived in Gladwin County
since 1976 and previously lived in Lincoln
Park. Gerald married Isabel (Raymond), Aug. 14, 1943
in Detroit. He
was a truck driver for Gateway Transportation in Dearborn, retiring in 1975 after 30 years. He
was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655 and a member of St.
Annes Catholic Church.
Besides
his wife he is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline and husband Thomas Ficek,
Geraldine and husband John Brancheau, Dayle and husband George Willetts, and
Michelle and husband Emil Schaefer, all of Beaverton; one son, Robert and wife
Lisa of Beaverton; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; one niece; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by
his parents, and two brothers, Emil and Donald.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Annes Catholic Church in Edenville with
Rev. Father Todd Arnberg officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery. There was a
special service at 7 p.m. Sunday by the Albright Shores Eagles Aerie 3655. Hall
Funeral Home, Gladwin, was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph J.
Bokota, Jr., 60, of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida passed away on Feb. 14, 2005 at the University of
Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor
after a lengthy battle with heart disease. Joseph was born on Jan. 5, 1945 in Detroit. He was preceded
in death by his father, Joseph J. Bokota, Sr. and is survived by his mother,
Caroline C. Bokota of Beaverton; five sisters, Toni Matteson of Dumas, Texas,
Sandra L. (Ken) Slater of Metamora, Claudia (Dan) Whitmer of Beaverton; Marilyn
(Ken Dell) Bokota of Beaverton, and Cheryl Bokota of Gladwin; three nieces,
Carol (Bob) Hoag, Tammy Whitmer and Justina Bokota, all of Beaverton; seven
nephews, Steven (Carla) Henry of Atlas, Ron Jr., George, Rob, Bob, John and
Matt Matteson, all of Dumas, Texas; and many Great nieces and nephews, aunts,
uncles and cousins. Joe will be remembered and deeply missed by his family and
friends, and all those who cared for him during his illness.
He will
be laid to rest at Billings Township Cemetery,
Albright Shores. Joe requested cremation and
no services. Memorial donations may be made to your favorite charities.

B. Branscom, 77, of 4273 Monroe Rd., Midland, died Monday, Jan.
25, in the Saginaw V.A. Medical
Center after a long
illness. Born in Jackson County, Ohio, Oct. 23, 1910, he moved to Midland
County 48 years ago from Ohio.
He was self-employed and a member of the Midland Baptist
Church. Mr. Branscom
served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Branscom and the former Marion
Martin were married Jan. 28, 1942, in Midland.
She preceded him in death May 26, 1986.
Surviving are one son, Paul of Ray, Ohio; 4 step-daughters, Mrs. Hazel Ray and Mrs. Faye
Tennant of Midland, Helen Mason of Allen Park and Micki Hearns of Tampa,
Fla.; 2 brothers, Sam of Midland and Lee of
Chillicothe, Ohio; 2 sisters, Clara Clary of Londonderry,
Ohio and Alace Benson of Chillicothe, Ohio;
24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. A brother and a sister preceded
him in death.

following a long illness. Born in Morehouse, Mo., on April 19, 1906, he came to Gladwin County
in 1971. Mr. Bray retired in 1971 as service manager for a car dealership in Pontiac. He was a member
of the Waterford Fraternal Order of Eagles 2887 and the Pontiac Moose Lodge
108. Mr. Bray and the former Anna Mae Strong were married March 22, 1966, in Waterford.

died Friday, October 18, in the Veterans

1943, and was discharged Feb. 13, 1946. He moved to Flint
in February of 1946 where he worked as a carpenter for Buick Motors, retiring
in 1972, coming to Gladwin
County at that time.

Orley "Pete" Brushaber, 86, of Beaverton,
died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996 at his home after a long illness. Born Feb. 14,
1910 in Beaverton, he resided there all his life. Orley married the former
Nellie Crowell, July 30, 1932 in Gladwin. He was a self-employed farmer and a
member of the Billings Missionary Church in Beaverton.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Harlan,
of Beaverton; five grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
three brothers. Services were held at 1 p.m.
Friday at the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton chapel
with the Rev. E Abbott officiating. Burial was in the Billings Cemetery,
Beaverton.

died April 30, 2002 at MidMichigan Medical Center

was born July 1, 1946 to Patten and Thelma (Gorha) Bryant in Rochester, Michigan.
He was a truck driver employed at Meadowbrook Trucking in Rochester. He had lived in Gladwin County
since 1995, having moved here from New Hudson, Michigan. He attended Blue Lake
Christian Church in Port Huron.
He is survived by his wife, Jill (Jackson)
Bryant of Beaverton; his son, Dominick Sheppard of South Carolina; three
daughters, Candide Jackson of Gladwin, Tarra (Terry) Rodabaugh of Beaverton and
Courtney Jackson of Midland; two grandchildren, Savanna Rodabaugh and Keyaarh
Burkeen; his parents Patten and Thelma Bryant of Beaverton; five brothers,

home following a long illness. He was born Oct. 5, 1907, the son of George and

Kentucky. He lived in Gladwin County
since 1976, having previously resided in Birmingham,
Michigan. Patton was a television
repairman, working for Bryant T.V. in Rochester,
Michigan. He belonged to Albright
Shores Eagles. On Dec. 1942 he married Thelma Gocha at Troy.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Bryant of
Beaverton; sons Robert (Rebecca) Bryant of Florida, Vernon (Gail) Bryant of
Cheboygan, Darrell (Emily) Bryant of Beaverton, Gregory Bryant of Byron, and
Jerome (Ila) Sattler of Walled Lake; daughters Doris Johnson of Clawson, Donna
(James) Griffing of Arizona, and Diane (Donald) Hampton of Fenton; several
grandchildren, great grandchildren; sisters Martha Barber, Nancy Nichols, both
of Port Huron, and Flossie Duley of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sons Harrison,
Allan and Wayne Bryant and Frank Sattler; daughters Beverly Frederick;

Shores, died Monday, Dec. 8, in the Saginaw Veterans
Hospital after a long
illness. Born in Detroit Sept. 2, 1929, he moved
to Gladwin County
in 1969 from Hazel Park.
Mr. Cogley was a driver for T. Pierce Trucking in Madison Heights. He served in the Navy during
World War II and was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Club 3655, the
Gladwin County DAV 77 and the 21 CB Club. Mr. Cogley was married to the former
Judith Wagner Feb. 14, 1959, in Livonia.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,
Thomas of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Dawn) Taylor IV of Beaverton; and 2
grandchildren. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from St. Anne's
Catholic Church Edenville. The Rev. Father Joseph Schabel will officiate and
burial will be in the Billings
Township Cemetery.
A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and an Eagles Memorial Service
Wednesday evening also. Graveside services will be held by the Gladwin County

Mrs. Joan Kinasz of Beaverton. A sister, Bernice Rock, preceded him in death in
1982.

The former Lillian O'Keefe, she was born in Standish on August 20, 1901. She
was married to Frank Grant in 1919 and he died in 1955. Mrs. Grant then married
Merle H. Crawford on January 21, 1962. He preceded her in death on June 24,
1976.

of Midland; 3 step-daughters, Beulah Grant of Beaverton, Mrs. Dorothy Zabel and
Mrs. Naomi Neuman of Bay City; one brother, Orville of Midland; and 3 sisters,

OLDEST RESIDENT DIES
Mrs. Martha E. Crowell, 101, Gladwin County's
oldest inhabitant, passed away Thursday, November 11, at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Nellie Brushaber, in Billings
Township. She had
been ill only a short time. Mrs. Crowell is survived by four sons, Lewis of
Owosso, Enos, and Frank of Billings, and John of Tobacco Township; four
daughters, Mrs. Cora PHILLIPS of Grand Ledge, Mrs. Beatrice Snyder of Hay
Township, Mrs. Mary Woodruff and Mrs. Nellie Brushaber of Billings Township;
one brother, George Harvey of Nashville; two sisters, Mrs Anna Linsea and Mrs.
Mina Barnes, both of Vermontville; 26 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren,
and 31 great great grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, November 14, at
1:30 p.m., in the Billings
Community Church.
The Rev. Neil G. Keyes and the Rev. Margaret Smith officiated, with burial in
the Billings Cemetery. Mrs. Crowell was 101
years, 2 months, and 8 days old. She was born, September 3, 1864, in Van Wert
County, Ohio, to Hezekiah and Mary Ann Harvey and came to Michigan with them as a child in a covered
wagon. They first settled at Spicerville, in Barry County.
In
1884, she married Ruben Crowell, after a 2-year courtship. They lived on a farm
near Woodland before coming to Gladwin County
in the late 1800's. They homesteaded wild, virgin land in Billings
Township, later moving to the Dale
vicinity in Tobacco Township for several years, and then back to Billings.
Mrs. Crowell was truly a pioneer woman. She
had told of how she and her husband cut logs all winter in those early days.
"I helped Ruby saw three to four cords of wood a day. That's the way we
earned our living. Ruby would sell the wood and bring home a sack of flour, a
strip of salt pork, lard, coffee, sugar, and other foods." Mr. Crowell
died in 1911 leaving his wife with their eight small children and an $8.00
monthly pension check to feed and clothe them.
Mrs. Crowell known to her family and friends
as Grandma Crowell, in spite of her advanced years retained her mental alertness
and physical activity until her last illness. Gladwin County Record dated

grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sister

Mr. DeVille was a set-up man for Chevrolet V-8 Engine Plant in Flint
until he retired in 1975 after 30 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War and
a member of the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303, Am-Vets of Gladwin County,
Billings Township Citizens Watch, Gladwin County Historical Society, Gladwin
County Red Cross, UAW Local 659 Flint and the Billings Senior Citizens Club. He
was an active Citizen Band radio operator. Mr. DeVille and the former Doris
Landis were married Dec. 22, 1951, in Flint.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one
daughter Colette, at home; one son, Timothy of California; 2 brothers, Charles
of Muskegon and Raymond of Chesaning; 2 sisters, Mary Stafford of Muskegon and
Christine Fenner of Flint.

Detroit, he lived in Gladwin County since 1989, owning recreation property since
1977, and previously lived in Centerline.
Vernon married Mary M. Knepp-Johnson, Jan. 5, 1989
in Centerline. He worked in the shipping department for Ford Motor Company in
Mt. Clemens, retiring in 1989 after 23 years. He was a member of St. Anne's
Catholic Church in Edenville, and VFW Post 11256 in Gladwin.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Michael
and wife Janet of Brighton, and Mark and wife Mary Ann of Imlay City; two
daughters. Mary Jo Edgerton of Lenox, and Marie and husband Mark Schulte of Goodrich;
three stepsons, Thomas and wife Thelma Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va. Timothy
and wife Anette Johnson of Romeo, and James and wife Jill Johnson of Macomb;
one stepdaughter, Sandra and husband Gary Bauman of Macomb; one brother, Richard
and wife; Ann of Madison Heights; and 11 grandchildren.

died Saturday, March 27, in the Gladwin Area
Hospital
following a short illness. Born in Geneva,
Ohio,
on March 21, 1891, he came to Gladwin
County in 1945 from Lincoln Park.
Mr. Fales was a retired gasoline dealer. He was married to the former Eva
Briner on June 15, 1912, in Marion, Ohio.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one
sister, Mrs. Vivian Becker, of Shelby, Ohio.
A son and a daughter preceded him in death. Rites were held Tuesday at 2 p.m.
from the Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton. The Rev. Winston
Decker officiated and burial was in the Billings Cemetery.

Eugene Farver, 72, of Beaverton, died Wednesday,
Nov. 10, 1999 at his home after a short illness. Born April 16, 1927 in Owosso,
he lived in Gladwin County since 1985 and previously lived in Vernon.
Eugene married Florence (Maraskine) Dec. 11, 1948 in
Chesaning. He was a millwright for Johnson Control in Owosso, retiring in 1985
after 38 1/2 years.
Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters,
Helen and husband Gary Jones of Vernon,
Mary and husband Frank Roe of Wolcottville, Ind.,
and Sharon and husband Ray Eisenhauer of
Owosso; one son, Joseph and wife LeAnn of Flushing;
his mother, Helen Farver of Ashley;
four grandchildren; and an aunt, Edna Farver of St.
Helen.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne's
Catholic Church in Edenville with Rev.
Father Todd Arnberg officiating. Burial was in Billings
Township Cemetery in Beaverton. A wake
service was held at 7 p.m. Friday. Memorial
contributions may be made to Mid-Michigan Hospice.

ELECTROCUTED
A 55-year-old Beaverton
man was electrocuted while working at a farm in Isabella County Friday morning.
Dale DeLos Freeman of 4893 S. Jones Rd., Beaverton, was killed instantly when
the water well rig he was operating came in contact with a high tension
power-line, said Isabella County Sheriff's officers.
Freeman, owner of Freeman Well Drilling Co.
in Beaverton,
was drilling with the rig at 9635 N. Summerton Rd.
Friday morning when a derrick on the machine hit a Consumers Power Co.
electrical service line, said Sgt. Frank Stevens of the Isabella County
Sheriff's Department.
Freeman was reworking the well at the farm
with a co-worker, George Croll, 52, of Grant Rd.
when the accident happened about 10 a.m. Croll told deputies he was shocked and
felt some of the surge, but was not injured. The sheriff's department was
summoned at 10:11 a.m. and an Isabella County
medical examiner pronounced Freeman dead at the scene.
"The victim was killed instantly when
the derrick touched the high line." Stevens said. "He was grounded
and working the controls on the rig when the accident happened." Stevens
noted the power line was a transmission

D. Freeman, 55, of 4893 S. Jones Rd.,
Beaverton,
died suddenly Friday, July 17, when he was electrocuted while repairing a water
well in Isabella
County.
He was born in Midland
Feb. 12, 1932, and attended schools there. Mr. Freeman served in the Marine
Corps from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War. He was employed by Dow Chemical
Co. for 10 years until becoming a well driller. Mr. Freeman was a member of the
Allbright Shores F.O.E., the Midland V.F.W. Post 3651, the Estey Moose Lodge
and the Sanford American Legion Post 443. Mr. Freeman and the former Delores
Barshaw were married in September 1972, in Midland.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,
Alan of California; 3 daughters, Pamela Hanely of California, Lori Royale of
Houston, Texas, and Lesia Brown of Midland; his mother, Hazel Freeman of
Midland; 3 step-sons, Dennis Barshaw of Beaverton, Bryan and Todd Barshaw of
Mississippi; 3 step-daughters, Terri Walle of Colorado, Tami Brooks and Kim
Thacker of Florida; 3 sisters, Rita Freeman and Billie Briggin of Midland and
Ardath Chubb of Grayling; and 12 grandchildren.
Services were held last Monday at 11 a.m.

2003, at Gladwin Living Centre. She was born Feb. 22, 1928, to Watson and Ahava

A homemaker, she lived in Gladwin County
most of her life. She married Harvey Gingerich Nov. 12, 1949, in Beaverton.
He preceded her in death in 1985.

and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her

15, 2001 at home following a long illness. Born Sept. 9, 1915 in Beaverton,
he was the son of John F. and Josephine (Leeth) Grant. He lived in Gladwin County most of his
life. Jake married Marie Wagner, May 29, 1942 in Paradise, Ohio. He
was a truck mechanic for Robinson Industries, retiring in 1972 after 28 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.
Besides his wife he is survived by two sons,
Ivan and wife Beverly of Beaverton and Terry and wife Judy of Utica; two
daughters, Peggy and husband Terry Govitz of Gladwin, and Leta and husband Rick
Painter of McMillan; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents; one great-granddaughter, Melanie Allor in
1996; one brother, William in 1963; and two sisters, Rachel Holycross in 1969
and Esther Moorman in 1945.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow
(Thursday) at Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton with Rev. Henry

died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 31. Born in Mt.

on October 5, 1921, he graduated from Midland High
School in 1938. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Asian Pacific Theatre in World War
II. Mr. Grant was employed at Dow Chemical Co. for 35 years and was a senior
plant mechanic in the Central Research Lab. He was a member of St. Brigid's
Church, the V.F.W. and was a former union steward.
Mr. Grant and the former Anna Bowers were
married on October 2, 1948, in Midland. Besides his wife,
he is survived by one son, William of Rodney; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann and
Alisha Marie at home; his mother, Mrs. Lillian Crawford of All-Bright Shores; and one sister, Buelah Mae Grant of Beaverton.
Rites were held today, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. from St. Brigid's Catholic Church.

died July 5, 2003, at the Gladwin Living Centre following a long illness. She
was born August 10, 1913, to William and Carrie (Hile) VanSickle in Hersey, Michigan.
A recovery technician, she retired from Midland Hospital
in 1979 after 26 years of service. She lived in Gladwin County
for most of her life and was a member of Billings Bible Church
and the Eastern Stars-Coleman. She married Francis Graves June 29, 1929, in Midland.
He predeceased her in 1989.
She is
survived by daughter and son-in-law Betty and Dale Mavis of Beaverton; daughter
and son-in-law Bonnie and Jim Burgess of Beaverton; son William and Sharon
Graves of St. Helen; daughter Beverly Torrez of Beaverton; daughter and
son-in-law Ruth Ann and Gary Atkinson of Beaverton; 17 grandchildren; 41 great
grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and
special nieces Suzanne Deyarmond and Anna Fenton. Besides her husband, she was
predeceased by her parents and brothers David and Verde VanSickle.

Services were held Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at 1 p.m., at Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton
with Deacon Ken Lind officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton.

Robert Price who preceded her in death in 1981. She married Earl Haenlein in
1981. She worked for General Motors in Saginaw
as an assembly worker, retiring in 1974 after 30 years. She was a member of the
Albright Shores Eagles Auxiliary #3655, and Good Shephard Lutheran Church.
Besides her husband she is survived by one
son, Robert and wife Joni Price of Saginaw; one daughter, Barbara Margiotta of
California; one stepdaughter, Mary Jo and husband Fred Burback of Freeland; one
step-son, Richard Allan Haenlein of Saginaw; two sisters, Bertha Bean of
Saginaw, and Dorethea Bierd of Bay City; four grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Boettcher, and
one sister, Rose Neuwirth.

Mr. Hartley was an electrician at Buick Motors in Flint
and retired in 1965 after 30 years. He served in the Navy during World War II
and was a member of the Flint UAW Local 599, the Gladwin County
VFW
and Albright Shores Eagles Club 3655.
Mr. Hartley and the former Bernice Davis
were married in 1938 in Bay County.
She died in 1972. He then married the former Virginia Pagett in 1973 in Bay County. She preceded
him in death in 1985.
Surviving are one son, Sgt. Major Michael
Hartley, Langley AFB, W. Va.; one daughter, Mrs. Marshall (Sharon) Durr of
College Station, Texas; his step-mother, Mrs. Agnes Hartley of Clio; one
brother, Lee of Beaverton; one sister, Mrs. Marie McDougall of Lake George; and 7
grandchildren. A son, Douglas, died July 12, 1982.

Ralph D. Haske, age 65, or Beaverton died October 1,
2004 at Bay Medical Center in Bay City following a short illness. He was born
July 6, 1939 in Munger. On August 3, 1973 he married Joy Fogelsonger in Reese.
He was a Lift Truck Operator for General Motors Buick Division in Flint until
his retirement after 30 years in 1990. He was a veteran, having served in the
United States Army. He had lived in Gladwin County since 1987, having
previously resided in Bay City. He was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles
Aerie 3655 and the Estey Moose Lodge #456.
Surviving him
are his wife, Joy Haske of Beaverton; his son, Ted Haske of Beaverton; his
daughter, Natalie Ormsby of Essexville; grandchildren Jackie and Chip Ormsby;
mother-in-law Helen Kuehnemund of Bay City; brothers Henry (Charlotte) Haske of

Hathaway, 76, who died Tuesday, July 23, following an illness of several
months. Born June 19, 1892, in Elsie, Mr. Hathaway came to his farm in Billings
Township 29 years ago and prior to that had lived in Midland Couty since the
age of seven years. A World War I veteran, he and his wifes, Susan, were
married March 6, 1920, in Beaverton.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; two
daughters, Mrs. Frank Curry (Frances) of Rhodes, and Mrs. Hattie Ranes of
Lexington; one son, Norman, of Midland; four brothers, Lewis of Grand Rapids,

to John and Bertha (Havens) Maxwell. She married Larry Jersey on March 10, 1990
in Beaverton.
She was a Housekeeper at Gladwin Hospital.
She lived in Gladwin County
for the last 65 years, having previously resided in Hope. She was a member of
V.F.W. Auxiliary 11256 in Gladwin, and Albright Shores Eagle Aerie 3655 in Beaverton.
Surviving are her husband, Larry Jersey of
Gladwin; eight children, Louise Shell of Walled Lake, Barbara (Jesse) Brown of
Midland, Anna Sykes of Beaverton, Jolita (Tom) Shaw of Gladwin, Diane (Dave)
Williamson of Mt. Morris, Wayne (Nancy) Jersey of Millington, Cindy Jersey of
Lolo, Montana, and Barbara Sloane of Houghton Lake; 28 grandchildren, 37 Great
grandchildren, and seven Great great grandchildren; one sister, Martha Maier of
Beaverton; four brothers, William Maxwell, Donald Maxwell, James Maxwell and
John Maxwell, all of Beaverton; and several nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by one daughter, Shirley; two sisters, Alice and Laura; and one
brother, Robert.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 11
at the Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with pastor Chuck Drudge officiating.
Burial took place at Billings
Township Cemetery
in Beaverton.
Special services will be provided by V.F.W. Auxiliary 11256 and Albright Shores

years. Mr. Jones was a farmer. He was married to Miss Laura Wolfe in
1917 at Hope. Survivors besides his
wife, include four sons, Howard of Midland and Earl, Frank and John of

died Monday, May 20, 1996 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center
- Gladwin following a short illness. Born March 18, 1922 in Clare, he resided
in Beaverton
since moving from Detroit. Mr. Kelly was
employed by Jefferson Assembly in Detroit until retiring in
1974 after 30 years. He was a member of the UAW Local No. 7, Detroit.
Mr. Kelly married the former Julia Dejonghe in January 1960 in Detroit
and she preceded him in death in 1992.
Surviving are a sister, Violet Schuler of
Detroit and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday
from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton chapel. The Rev.
David Stewart officiated and burial was in the Billings Cemetery,

He was associated with his father in the operation of a store on Kent Rd.
until it closed in 1929. Mr. Kent was a member of the
Billings School District No. 1 board of education for 36 years and the Beaverton
board of education for 8 years. He also served as Billings Township
clerk for over 20 years. Mr. Kent was married to the former
Iva Barden on Dec. 23, 1917, in Marshall.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2
daughtes, Mrs. William (Claudene) Kinnaird of Northville and Mrs. Pearson
(Barbara) Wade of Boise, Idaho; one brother, Millard of Beaverton; 2 sisters,
Mrs. Evelyn Miller of Moran and Mrs. Nina Erskine of Hemlock; and 5 grandchildren.
A daughter, Mrs. Lorraine Mukensnable, preceded him in death in March 1983.

Mrs. Helen Kent, 83, of Billings Township, died
Monday following a three-week illness. Born January 29, 1878, in Oxford County,
Ontario,
the former Helen Colbeck was married to Marshal L. Kent. He preceded her in
death on May 12, 1951. Mrs. Kent
has been a resident of Billings Township
for the past 80 years. She was a member of the Billings Community Sunday School
and the Dale-Billings Ladies Aid.
Surviving are two sons, Claude and Mike, of Beaverton; and
two daughters, Mrs. Evaline Miller, of Moran, and Mrs. Nina Erskine, of
Hemlock; a sister, Mrs. Nina Fox, of Brookfield, Wis.;
and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the

Julia
Burket Kent,
92, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003. She was born Feb. 12, 1911, to Margaret
Kilbride Merriman and Walter Burket. Walter died in 1913 and Margaret married
Authur Rowley in 1915. Arthur became Julia's loving father. She was blessed
with many siblings; stepbrother and sister Cecil Rowley and Marion (Rowley)
Alley; brothers, Joe and Robert Burket; Phoebe (Burket) McKimmy and Lottie
(Burket) McKimmy; and half brother and sister, George Rowley and Sara (Rowley)
Schneider.
Julia grew up on the family farm near
Gladwin. She graduated from Gladwin
High School, Gladwin County Normal and
Central
Michigan
University.
She taught grade school in Gladwin School
until her marriage to Millard S. "Mike" Kent on May 31, 1931. Julie
and Mike lived in Billings
Township in Gladwin County,
and were married 67 years before Mike died in 1998. The marriage produced three
children, Charlene (Richard) Brelsford of Evans, Georgia, Millard M.
"Bub" (Mary Lou) Kent of Midland and William "Bill" (Joan)
Kent of Beaverton.
After the children were through school
Julia returned to teaching until retirement in 1970. Her life centered around
family, church, community and education. She loved gardening, canning fruits
and vegetables and cooking for her family. God was her copilot. She was adamant
about education and wanted her children and grandchildren to obtain as much as
possible. Julia's last years were spent at Tender-care in Midland
where she was well cared for and loved by the caring and dedicated staff.
Julia's parents and siblings are deceased.
Surviving along with her three children
are grandchildren, Jennifer (Robert) Kent-Bryant, Khristopher Kent, Kraig
(Teresa) Kent, Kevin (Michelle) Kent and Carter (Cassandra) Kent; and great
grandchildren, Jordan, Haleigh and Benjamin Kent-Bryant; Erik, Mitchell, Noah,
Karley, Makayla, Shea and Nash Kent.
Julia's family will receive friends at
Hall Funeral Home, 430 S. Ross St.,
Beaverton
on Monday, Dec. 22 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and on the day of the funeral
service from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The funeral service will be at
11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23 at Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton.

Marshall L. Kent, 81, died suddenly at his
home in Billings
township on Saturday, May 12. Funeral services were held on Tuesday from the
Dale Methodist church, with burial in the Billings
cemetey. The Rev. Donald Sailor officiated, and graveside services were under
the auspices of the Beaverton F.&A.M. Mr. Kent was born on September 24,
1869 in Washtenaw county and was the longest resident of Billings township,
coming here 66 years ago with his parents, William and Eveline Kent. At one
time he operated a store and he lived on one of the best farmes in the
township. Mr. Kent
was married to Miss Helen Colbeck, in Beaverton.
Surviving are his wife, Helen' two sons,
Claude Kent and Millard Kent both of Beaverton;
two daughters, Evelyn Miller of Curtis and Nina Erskine of Hemlock; one

S. "Mike" Kent, 89, of Beaverton,
died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical Center
after a brief illness. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County.
He attended Gladwin County Normal and Centrail Michigan College.
Following college, he taught school in Gladwin County
for 11 years. He was also a licensed electrician.
He worked in the instrument department at
the Dow Chemical Company for 33 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the
Billings
Missionary
Church.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Besides his wife, Julia, he is survived by
one daughter, Charlene and husband Richard Brelsford of South Carolina; two
sons, Millard M. and wife Mary Lou of Midland, and William F. and wife Joan of
Beaverton; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Carter, Khristopher, Kraig, and Kevin;
six great-grandchildren, Jordan, Haleigh, Benjamin, Noah, Erik, Mitchell; and
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Nina and
Evelyn; and one brother, Claude.

Carl G. Kinkel, 72 of Beaverton, died
unexpectedly, Thursday, Oct. 27, 1994, at his residence. He was born June 7,
1922, in Laporte, son of the late Philip and Elizabeth (Kratz) Kinkel. Mr.
Kinkel was a life-long resident of Midland
County. He married
the former Onalee V. Price on Jan. 29, 1942, and she predeceased him on Feb.
19, 1993. He worked for over forty years for The Dow Chemical Co.
in research and development, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Albright
Shores Eagles Lodge No. 1610. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law,
Geoffrey and Connie Kinkel of Beaverton; one daughter and son-in-law, Carla and
Joseph Crossland of Madisonville, Tenn.; two sisters and brothers-in-law
Christine and Clarence "Fritz" Schlader, Elizabeth and Clement
Ostrander all of Laporte; five grandchildren, LaShawn, Devinee, Jolene, Rhonda
and Geoffrey Charles; one great grandson, Travis John; and by his faithful
companion, Babe.
Funeral services for Mr. Kinkel will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1994,
at the Ware-Smith-Woolever & Company Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St.,
with military honors under the auspices of the Midland V.F.W. Post No. 3651.

Mr. Kirby retired in November 1965 as a die setter for Chevrolet Manufacturing
in Flint.
A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the All-Bright Shores Eagles Club
3655 and the Disabled American Veterans Gateway Chapter 134, Flint. He was
married to Luella Voight on May 7, 1957, in Angola, Ind.
She preceded him in death November 17, 1976, in Beaverton.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons,
Chester Jr. of Crystal Lake, Arthur of Grand Blanc and Virgil of Flint; 3
daughters, Mrs. Virginia Vandivier of Flint, Mrs. Betty Coleman of Grand Blanc

member of the Billings
Missionary

Surviving

April 11, 2001 at home. Born Sept. 7, 1926 in Detroit, he was the son of Mark
and Beulah (Bates) Little. He lived in Gladwin County since 1968 and previously
lived in Detroit. Mark married Joyce M. Wagner, Jan. 5, 1948 in Detroit. He was
a machine operator for Simpson Industry-Gladwin Machine Products, retiring in
1988 after 17 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He
was also a member of St. Annes Catholic Church.
Besides his
wife he is survived by three sons, Thomas J. of Highland, Mark E. and wife
Rossette of Leigh High Acres, Fla., and Donald J. of Beaverton; two daughters,
Joan M. and husband Tom Barkulas of Livonia, and Joyce Ann Milks of Beaverton;
12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Adam R. Loper, 64, of 3968 Pine Rd., Beaverton, died
Saturday, April 11, 1992, at his home after a long illness. Born in Flint on
March 27, 1928, he moved to Gladwin County 6 1/2 years ago from
Florida. Mr. Loper was a machine operator for
General Motors In Flint for 16 years and retired In
1975. He also worked as a carpenter for Disney World
in Florida for 10 years until he retired and moved to Gladwin County in 1985.
Mr. Loper and the former Rose (Dushan) Peters were
married Sept. 2, 1960, in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons,
Richard Loper of Flint, Victor and Dirk Loper of Bay City; one daughter, Jeannie
Loper of Flint; 3 step-daughters, Cindy Margetson and Ruth Ann Hamrie of Flint;
and Donna Barker of Manitou Beach; one step-son, Martin Peters of Jackson; his mother,
Mrs. Harriet Loper of Flint; 2 brothers, John of Flint and Carl of Millington;
3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Kern of Flushing. Mrs. Jill Griganni of Birch Run and

Lutzke Sr., 66, of 4599 Estey Rd., Rhodes,
died Wednesday, Oct. 16, in St. Luke's Hospital, Saginaw,
after an illness of 2 years. Born in Bay
City April 21, 1919, he had spent most of his life
in Gladwin
County.
Mr. Lutzke retired in February 1978 after 30 years at Grey Iron Foundry, Saginaw.
He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Allbright
Shores Assembly of God Church and UAW Local 668. Mr. Lutzke and the former
Della Whitney were married Nov. 18, 1950, in Billings Township.
Surviving besides his wife are 2 sons, David
of Bay City and Earle of Bay City; a sister, Mrs. Agnes Poquette of Saginaw; a
half-brother, Fred Wickline of Saginaw;
and a half-sister, Mrs. Agnes Zusiak of Saginaw.
Services were held Friday at 1 p.m. from the
Allbright Shores Assembly of God. The Rev. Roy Glasgow officiated and burial
was in the Billings
Township Cemetery.

Martin, 62, of 854 E. Knox Rd.,
Beaverton,
died suddenly Saturday, Oct. 22, in St. Mary's Medical Center,
Saginaw.
Born in Maderia,
Calif.,
Sept. 29, 1926, he had spent most of his life here. Mr. Martin, a boilermaker
and member of the Boilermakers Local 169, Dearborn, retired in 1985 after 35
years. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Derringer
American Legion Post in Waukegan,
Ill.
Mr. Martin and the former Lillian St. Aubin were married in 1945 in Midland.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,
Harold of Beaverton; one daughter, Nancy Knoch of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Ernest of Averill
and Richard of Midland; 2 sisters, Goldie Morse of Midland and Gladys Clark of Iron River; 9
grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son,
LeRoy, in March 1951, a daughter, Mary Chritz, August 1975, 6 brothers and 2
sisters.
Services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. from
the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev. Buddy Dodge officiated and
burial was in the Billings Township
Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Isabel Trumble,
82, were held on Monday afternoon from the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. J. P.
Hollopeter, of the Beaverton Methodist church officiated and burial was made in
the Billings
cemetery. Isabel Armstrong was born on May 30, 1869 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Armstrong in Yale. She was married to Alexander Trumble, who died on April 12,
1922. She has been a lifetime resident of Billings
township and passed away at her home there on Friday, May 23.
Surviving are one son, Robert Trumble, of
Beaverton; four daughters, Mrs. Roxa Rose, of Beaverton, Mrs. Trese Stark, of
Yale, Mrs. Ann Brown, of Saginaw and Mrs. Isabel Martin, of Roscommon; one
brother, Robert Armstrong, of Yale; also 17 grandchildren and 27 great

Isabelle Martin, 81, of 373 E. Estey Rd.,

died Sunday, Sept. 10, in the Clare Nursing Home followig a long illness. Born
in Yale on August 4, 1897, she came to Gladwin County
in 1905. Mrs. Martin was a member of the All-Bright Shores Assembly of God
Church. The former Isabella Trumble, she was married to Walter Martin on April
15, 1925, in Beaverton.
Besides her husband, she is survived by one
son, John McGrath of Beaverton; 2 daughters, Mrs.
Melvin (Margaret) Freier of Gladwin and Mrs. Paul (Mary) Offenbecker of
Beaverton; one brother, Robert of Beaverton; 6 grandchildren and 17 great
grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m.
from the Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev. Fred Wilson will
officiate and burial will be in the Billings Cemetery.

Kenneth Warren Martin, 41, a state
Conservation Department fire officer, died Sunday at his home in Standish after
a three-year illness. He was born Jan. 4, 1921, in Billings Township,
and lived in that area until seven years ago when he moved to Standish. A
veteran of World War II, he was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church,
Standish. He was married to the former Margaret Erway in Beaverton
on August 6, 1947.
Survivors include his widow, Margaret; one
daughter, Sandra, and one son, David, both at home; his father, Irvin Martin;
four sisters, Mrs. Marian Branscom, Mrs. Virginia Haney, and Mrs. Goldie Morse,
of Midland; and Mrs. Gladys Clark, of Wisconsin; four brothers, Victor, of
Hockaday, Harold, of Billings Township, and Ernest and Richard, of Midland.
Funeral services will be held today
(Wednesday) at 2 p.m. from the Holy Cross

died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001 at MidMichigan
Medical
Center, Midland.
Born Oct. 5, 1929 in Lake City, she was the daughter of Henry and Alberta
(Hancock) St. Aubin. She lived in Gladwin County
most of her life. Lillian married Harold Martin, May 24, 1945 in Midland.
He preceded her in death in 1988. She was a homemaker and a life member of the
American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving
are one son, Harold of Beaverton; one daughter, Nancy Martin of Beaverton; nine
grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her mother,
Alberta St. Aubin; one sister, Macie Adams of Midland;
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; one
son, Leroy; and one daughter, Mary Chritz.
Services
will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton,
with Pastor Brad Withrow officiating. Burial will be in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton.

Funeral services were held for Corporal Max
Martin, 24, on Monday, October 18 at the Hall Funeral Home, with burial in the Billings

Cpl. Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin
Martin, of Billings,
died on October 15 at Percy Jones hospital of pneumonia complications. He
re-enlisted after serving in the Air Force in Europe during the war and was
stationed in Frankfort,
Germany,
when he contracted pneumonia in December 1947. He was flown to Percy Jones Hospital last
March.
Surviving are his wife and daughter, in Germany;
his parents andents; five brothers, Victor, Harold, Kenneth, Ernest and
Richard; and four sisters, Mrs. Marian Branscom, Virginia Haney, Mrs. Goldie

died Monday, January 17, in Mesa,
Ariz.
Mr. Martin was born in Gladwin County,
June 16, 1971, the son of Irvin Martin, and lived most of his life here. He was
a veteran of World War II, a member of the Gladwin County VFW No. 7303, and a
retired boilermaker for Wickes Corporation. He and the former Dorothy Willford
Cornell were married June 2, 1972 in Gladwin.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy of Beaverton;
a son, John of Harrison; a daughter, SP3 Vickie Billon of Ft. Sil, Okla.; his
father, Irvin Martin of Cass City; 3 sisters, Mrs. Jack (Marion) Branscom and
Mrs. Lowell (Goldie) Morse, both of Midland, and Mrs. Robert (Gladys) Clark of
Iron River; 3 brothers, Harold of Beaverton, Ernest and Richard, both of
Midland.

following a short illness. Born in Berlin
on April 12, 1892, he spent most of his life in Gladwin County
and farmed. Mr. Martin was a member of the Albright Shores Assembly of God
Church and a veteran of World War I. He and the former Isabelle Trumble were
married April 15, 1925, in Beaverton. She preceded him
in death on September 10, 1978.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Paul (Mary)
Offenbecker of Billings Township and Mrs. Melvin (Margaret) Freier of Gladwin;
one son, John McGrath of Billings
Township; 2 sisters, Mrs. Goldie

MALVIN JOHN MARTY MARTINSON (13 DEC 1929 - 11 JAN 1994)
Malvin J. (Marty) Martinson, 64, of Beaverton,
passed away Jan. 11, 1994, at St. Mary's Medical
Center in Saginaw following a long illness. Born Dec.
13, 1929, in Iron River, Mr. Martinson was a
resident of Saginaw until 1969 when he moved to Beaverton. While in Saginaw, Mr. Martinson was a painting contractor, and
after moving to Beaverton,
he was employed by the Beaverton Rural Schools as a bus driver. He retired in
1989.
Mr. Martinson served in the Army Air Corp during the Korean Conflict. He is a
member of the American Legion Post 171 in Gladwin County.
He is also a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Edenville. Marty was also
an avid bowler & golfer.
He married the former Shirley J. Tyburski on June 26, 1965, in Saginaw. She survives along with foster
family, Tom, Laura, John, Colleen, Carrie and James Rhule of Beaverton. Foster family, James, Deborah and
Joseph Brushaber of Beaverton.
Special grandson and family, Dan, Pam and Nathan Coe of Saginaw. Several nieces and nephews' two
brothers, Alfred Martinson of Iron River and Arnie Martinson of Quincy, Mass.;
and two sisters, Bergie Flaschburger of Hoyt Lakes, Minn. and Amanda Cole of
Saginaw. Mr. Martinson is also survived by a son, daughter-in-law and grandson,
Martin, Laurie, and Scott Martinson of Saginaw.
Mr. Martinson was preceded in death by a son, Malvin Martinson; a daughter,
Audrey Tyburski; and one brother, Odvin Martinson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Jan. 14, 1994, at 11 a.m. at
St. Anne's Catholic Church in Edenville. Burial will be in the Billings Township
Cemetery, Beaverton. Mr. Martinson will lie in state at
the church from 4-9 p.m. today from 9 a.m. until time of service on Friday. A
Christian Wake Service will be recited at 8 p.m. today. The American Legion
will conduct a graveside service. Arrangements are in charge of the Hall
Funeral Homes, Gladwin and Beaverton.

ANTHONY MATESTIC
Anthony Matestic, 88, of Beaverton, died Monday,
Dec. 9, 1996 at his home. Born June 12, 1908 in Forest City, Pa. he served his
country in the U.S. Army and Air Force during the depression.
Mr. Matestic married the former Vladislava (Lottie)
Lagot on Jan, 27, 1942 in Detroit. He worked for the Saginaw County Road
Commission and moved to Gladwin County in 1981.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons,
Leonard of Flushing, Gerald of Beaverton, and Col. Ronald, Ret. U.S.A.F. of Tacoma,
Wash., one sister, Agnes Mack of Livonia; and four grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by one son, Raymond; 2 sisters; and 3 brothers.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anne's
Catholic Church in Edenville with the Father John Mullet officiating. Burial
was in the Billings Township Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Sisson Funeral

Raymond J. Matestic, 46, of 1615 Cross Rd.,
Beaverton, died suddenly of injuries sustained in
an accident in Charlotte, N.C. Saturday April 20,
1991. Born in Detroit, May 10, 1944, he was employed in construction and was a
veteran of Vietnam. Mr. Matestic was a member of St.
Anne's Catholic Church and graduated from Caro High
School in 1962.
Surviving are his parents, Anthony and Vladislava
Matestic of Beaverton; and 3 brothers, Leonard

Tacoma, Wash.

died suddenly at home Aug. 1, 2002. Born October 9, 1953 to William and Betty
(Stienbouer) McCoy in Saginaw,
he was a case manager for Mental Health in Gladwin County.
He had lived here for 35 years and was previously from Freeland. He belonged to
St. Annes Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Edenville. He married
Shawn (Torrez) McCoy February 15, 1975 in Sanford.
He is
survived by his wife, his daughter Amie (Robert) Blair of Tawas; his son, Kiel
McCoy of Barksdale Airforce Base in Louisiana; his grandchildren, Devin and
Dylan Blair of Tawas; his father and step-mother, William and Judy McCoy of
Beaverton; two brothers, Mike and Rick McCoy of Beaverton; four sisters, Cheryl
Breedlove of Beaverton, Melody Strait of Beaverton, Debra Kindy of Sanford, and
Terri Zimmerman of Lansing; his mother-in-law, Beverly Torrez of Beaverton; a
sister-in-law, Kelly Sargent of Beaverton; three brothers-in-law, Kurt and
Vince Torrez of Beaverton and Joseph Torrez of San Diego; several nieces and
nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his mother and his
brother David McCoy.

John McCrandell, living at Gerrish dam in Billings,
went after a pail of water Friday evening the 20th, and not returning his wife
and sister went to search for him. Not finding him they alarmed the neighbors
and search was made all that night and part of the next day without avail.
Sunday they grappled for his body in the river but without success. He had made
threats several times that he would drown himself, and lately when neighbors
called on him he bid, them goodby, saying that he would never see them again.
He was an invalid several years preceding his supposed death. He leaves a wife

on May 1, 1953 to Florence Nave. She married David McCrandell in Flint

for 20 years, having previously resided in Flint.
She was employed as a cashier at Coleman Marathon in Coleman.
Surviving
her are her husband, David McCrandell of Beaverton; three children, Spring
McCrandell of Texas, Amber (Buddy) Finney of Beaverton, and David (Rachel)
McCrandell of Clare; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Velda (Bird) Sego of Flint;
and her step father, Eric Nave of Flint. She was preceded in
death by her mother.

following an illness of two years. Born on Sept. 8, 1940, in Saginaw, he moved to Gladwin County in 1941. He
was a boilermaker with Local 169. Mr. Michalak and the former Julia Maxwell
were married on July 4, 1935, in Saginaw.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five
daughters, Mrs. Shirley Miller of Arizona, Mrs. Louise Shell of Walled Lake,
Mrs. Barbara Swift of Gordonville, Mrs. Anna Reid of Oxford and Mrs. Jolita

member of the Highwood Church of Daniel's Band and a correspondent for The
Gladwin County Record for several years. The former Edith Atherton, she was
married to Vernon Estes in 1938, in Alger. He died March 4, 1965. She then
married Albert M. Moggs Oct. 16, 1965, in Gladwin.
Besides her husband, she is survived by 5
sons, Charles Estes of Charlevoix, Vernon Estes of Beaverton, Robert Estes fo
Escanaba and Stephen Estes of Linwood: one sister, Mrs. Thelma Clay of Missouri; 5
brothers, Bert fo California, Fred and James
of Bay City, Steve of Tennessee, and Bill of Akron-Fairgrove; 8 grandchildren
and 3 great grandchildren.

Moore, 89, of Denton Creek Rd., Albright Shores, died in the Gladwin Area Hospital,
Monday night, August 27, from injuries received earlier in the evening. He was
struck by a car on the Estey Road. Mr. Moore
was born November 18, 1884, in Paulding
County, Ohio,
and had been a resident of Gladwin County
since 1935. He was a construction worker and had never been married. Surviving
are several nieces and nephews.

JOHN JACK PHILLIP MURRAY, SR. (13 APRIL 1918 - 3 FEB 1994)
John P. (Jack) Murray Sr., 75, of Beaverton
and formerly of Saginaw, passed away Thursday,
Feb. 3, 1994, at MidMichigan
Regional Medical
Center following a
lengthy illness.
He was born April 13, 1918, in Saginaw, and had
lived the last 23 years at Albright
Shores. Jack married
the former Margaret Schmieder of Saginaw on July
3, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa.,
while he was attending the U.S. Army Air Corps Aviation School at the University of Pittsburgh.
She survives him. Jack served as a pilot in the Eighth Air Force. He was a 1st
Lieutentant and flew 35 combat missions in a B-17 bomber.
He had been employed at Eaton Corp. in Saginaw
for 42 years until his retirement in 1983. Jack was a member of Falcons Hall
No. 124, Eagles Club and the Moose Lodge of Esty.
Surviving besides his wife, Margaret, are his daughter and three sons, Jacqulyn
DuPeron of Saginaw, John P. Murray Jr. of Saginaw, Michael Murray and his wife,
Teresa, of Enid, Okla., and Patrick Murray and his wife, Shawn, of Japan; 15
grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and his sister, Elizabeth Seamon of
California. Jack was preceded in death by one son, Scott Douglas Murray, and by
two sisters, Alvina and Viola Schuler.
Funeral service will take place 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 1994, at the Deisler
Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State), Saginaw. Interment will take place at Billings Cemetery
in Albright Shores. Friends may call at the
funeral home on Hemmeter after 2 p.m. Saturday where the family will be present
from 2 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Stanley
D. Muszynski , 88, of Beaverton, died May 28,
2003, at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland following a short illness. He was
born March 31, 1915, to Lucind and Contance (Poznanska) Muszynski in Detroit.
Stanley
married Gertrude Muszynski July 26, 1952, in Detroit.
She preceded him in death in 1995. Stanley
retired from Chrysler in Detroit in 1972 after 36
years of service as a machinist. Surviving are many special friends.
Funeral
Services were held Friday, May 30, 2003 at 2 p.m. at St. Annes Catholic Church
in Edenville, Michigan, with the Rev. Fr. Todd Arnberg officiating and
visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of service. He was buried in Billings Twp. Cemetery in Beaverton.

Elizabeth (Betty) Nearing-Krzyzaniak, 57, of Linwood, died Saturday
Feb 3, 1990 at Henry Ford Hospital,
Detroit. She
was born Jan. 21, 1933 in Hampton Township, Bay County.
She grew up in Bay County graduating from St. John's High School in 1951.
She attended Mercy Central School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse
in 1954. She had been a practicing nurse for 35 years in Bay City. She then was a nursing supervisor
for 25 years at Bay Medical
Center.
She
married Clarence (Tiny) Krzyzaniak, April 1989 in Bay City. He survives her.
She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Edenville and a member of the
churches Christian Service Commission.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence; her parents, Clement and Isabelle
(Richard) Hugo, of Essexville; four sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Gale
Neering of Beaverton, David and Kathleen Neering of Bowie, Md., Gary
Krzyzaniak, of Virginia Beach, Va., David Krzyzaniak of Linwood; three
daughters and son-in-law, Janis Neering, of Evanston, Ill., Kathy and Steve
Deyarmond, of Virginia Beach, Va., Karen Krzyzaniak, of Linwood; three
grandsons, Steven, Jared and Dave; one granddaughter, Aubrey; two brothers,
four sisters. She was predeceased by her first husband, Norbert Neering in
1987.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrataed at 11 a.m. Wednesday Feb. 7,
1990 from St. Anne's Catholic Church, Edenvile, with celebrant Rev. Father
Joseph Schabel. Burial will be in Billings Township
Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Ware-Smith-Woolever and Co. Funeral Home, 1200 W.
Wheeler from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m today, and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m.
until time of mass. The family will be
present at the funeral home today from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. There will be a Vigil
service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. this evening. Those planning expression of sympathy may

Norbert
S. (Nubbs) Nearing, 59, of 5300 Heron Cove, Beaverton, died Thursday, July 23, in St.
Mary's Hospital, Saginaw.
Born in Bay County March 15, 1928, he moved to Gladwin County
in 1976. Mr. Nearing was a millwright at the Grey Iron Foundry for 21 years. He
was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, a life member of the Bay City
D.A.V. Chapter 9, U.A.W. 668 of Saginaw, the Essexville
Knights of Columbus 2740 and a veteran of the Army during World War II. Mr.
Nearing and the former Betty Hugo were married Oct. 15, 1955, in Essexville.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons,
Mark of Pinconning and David of Vero Beach, Fla.; one daughter, Janis of Bay
City; 2 brothers, Erwin of Munger and Steven of Bellaire; one sister, Edith
Sisson of Bay
City; several step-brothers and
step-sisters; and one grandson.
Rites were held Monday at 11 a.m. from St.
Anne's Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Joseph Schabel officiated and burial
was in the Billings
Township Cemetery.
Military services were conducted by the Midland American Legion Post.

Arnold E. Nutt, 79, of Midland,
formerly of Beaverton,
passed away Friday at the Tendercare Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 21, 1919,
in Bay City to
Enoch and Laura Mead Nutt. Arnold married Mae
Wallace on June 13, 1953, in Dearborn.
Arnold worked
as a brick layer/stone
mason. He was past president of the Gladwin Historical Society, Building
Inspector, Cub Scout Leader, Billings
Township supervisor
and County commissioner.
Survivors include his wife, Mae; one son, Marc Nutt of Antilope, Calif.; one daughter, Joyce Born of Westland; four grandchildren; many nieces and
nephews. He was predeceased by two children, Dana and Keith Nutt; and two
brothers and one sister.
Services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 1999 at the Sisson Funeral
Home in Gladwin. Pastor Roger Brown will officiate and burial will be in Billings Township
Cemetery.
Memorials made be made to the Gladwin Historical Society of the charity of ones
choice.

Ersel Owens, 67, of 880 E. Highwood Rd., Beaverton,
died Thursday, June 4, 1992 in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center,
Midland, after a short illness. Born in Grundy, Va.. April 21. 1925, he moved
to Gladwin County 10 years ago from Troy. Mr. Owens worked for General Motors
in the Gear and Axle Department. He served in the Navy during World War II and
was a
member of the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303 and the
Albright Shores Eagles. Mr. Owens and the former Joanne Umhrey were married June
8. 1991. in Beaverton.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son. Ersel
of Tennessee; by 2 brothers, Estel of Hazel Park and Toyie of Virginia; 2
sisters, Winnie Owens of Romeo and Molly Owens of Atlanta, Ga; He was preceded
in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Rites were held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Living
Hope Church. The Rev. Roy Glasgow officiated and burial was in the Billings
Township Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the

Theodora
Marie Paul (Grandma) died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. She was born June 19, 1900
to Mary E. (Cosgrove) and Benjamin A. Wilbur in Fall River, Mass., where she grew up and graduated
from Durfee
High School.
She was the daughter of Mary E (Cosgrove) and Benjamin A. Wilbur. During World
War I, she worked as a secretary in Washington, D.C.
After that, she moved to Dearborn
and later married Oscar Paul, moving to New Bern, N.C. in
1921. After a few years in North
Carolina, she returned to Dearborn
where she made her home for the next 35 years. Grandma worked at the Book
Cadillac Hotel and was active in the community and Littlefield Presbyterian
Church, while raising four children. She was a member of Albright Shores Eagles
Aerie 3655.
After her
husband retired from Cadillac Motor, they moved to Harbour Heights, Fla., where
she was active in the Womens Club, Garden Club, and the Republican Womens
Club as recently as 1999. She also played the piano and organ and led the choir
in the Harbour
Heights Methodist Church
until 1990. Her summers were spent in Hope, surrounded by family and friends.
Her pastimes included playing her piano, playing cards, and sewing clothes for
herself, her children, and grandchildren. She took many classes well into her
80s and was an avid promoter of the power of education. Grandma loved to travel
and spent much of her retirement traveling to various parts of the world. She
was a remarkable woman and was a cancer survivor of more than 23 years.
Theodoras legacy of faith, kindness, generosity, ad love will live on for many
generations to come. She was loved by everyone and will be sadly missed by all
who knew her.
Surviving
are one daughter, Patricia (Ben) McAteer of Hope, two sons, Alfred (Barb) of Allbright Shores, Wilbur (Jean) of Lake City, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Ruth Paul of Westland;
18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Beatrice Gudith; her
husband, Oscar; and daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Ray Delman.
Services
were held Monday, Oct. 22 at Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton
with Rev. Father Todd Arnberg officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
cemetery, Beaverton.

JOSEPH
PILECKI, I (7 FEB 1911 - 19 NOV 1999)
Joseph
Pilecki, I -- one of seven children of Polish immigrants Jacob and Sophie
(Hadam) Pilecki, was born in Newark, N.J.,
Feb. 7, 1911. The family soon moved to Poland
where Joe attended school. As a young man, Joe returned to America
and settled in the Detroit
area where he graduated from the Ford Motor
Company
Trade School
for Tool and Die. He specialized in precision grinding and continued to work
for Ford until enlisting in the U.S. Army, March 26, 1942.
While
traveling by bus to Detroit,
Joe met Emma Irene Edwards, who was moving from her home in Sylvia, Tenn. to Detroit
in search of work. Poor health caused Joes military discharge Aug. 8, 1943,
and on Oct. 30, 1943, he and Irene were married in Detroit.
They established a home in Highland Park and were
blessed with six children, Glen who died in infancy, Richard, Fred, Mark, and
twin daughters, Arlene and Darlene.
Joe
eventually left Ford and worked for 22 years at the McPherson Broach &
Machine Company in Detroit
and later at Warren,
retiring in February 1973. Joe and Irene moved to an apartment in Roseville, later
to a home in Beaverton,
and in 1996 when Irenes health began to fail, moved back to a Roseville
apartment.
Joe
became seriously ill in August 1999 and in October moved to the Manor of
Malvern Care Center in Malvern, Iowa.
Joe and Irene had been married for 56 years when Joe died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999
at the Jennie
Edmundson
Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He
had attained the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 12 days. He was preceded in
death by his parents; infant son Glen; and brothers Henry, John, Adolph, and
Bernard.
Joe is
survived by his wife Irene of Malvern, Iowa; sons Richard and wife Virginia,
and Mark, all of Ferndale, Rev. Fred and wife Pam of Malvern, Iowa; two
daughters, Arlene and husband Ken Willoughby of Holly, and Darlene McClelland
of Warren; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank of Florida; and one sister,
Stella of Poland.
Services
will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin,
with Rev. Fred Pilecki officiating. Burial will be in Billings Township
cemetery in Beaverton.

Center
- Gladwin. Born Nov. 21, 1927 in Swartz Creek, he resided in Gladwin County since 1987
when he moved from Swartz Creek. Mr. Pobocik was employed as a heavy equipment
mechanic at American Body Co. in Flint until he retired in
1962 due to medical reasons. He was a member of the Albright Shores Eagles Club
Aerie 3655 and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Mr. Pobocik married the former
Mae Armstrong Feb. 11, 1950 in Flushing.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2
daughters, Catherine and husband Tom Cox of Swartz Creek, and Phyllis and
husband Bob Dickerson of Morrice; 2 sisters, Mary Klapko of Swartz Creek, and
Sally Stasa of Owosso;
and 3 grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday from
the St. Anne Catholic Church in Edenville with the Rev. Father Jules Spleet
officiating and burial was in the Billings Cemetery,
Beaverton.

she moved to Gladwin
County in 1966 from Flint
and made her home with her daughter. Mrs. Pollock was a cook for the Home Dairy
Restaurant in Flint
and retired in 1966. She was a member of the Billings Missionary Church
and the Billings Senior Citizens Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ross
(Pauline) Talarico of Beaverton; and a sister, Ethel Pelts of Mo. She was
preceded in death by a son, Harold Brotherton in 1974 and a brother, Orin Kirby
in 1971. Services were held Friday at 1 p.m. from the Billings Missionary Church.

following an illness of two months. Born in Saginaw
on February 16, 1914, he moved to Gladwin County 12 years ago. Mr. Price was
retired from the Saginaw Steering Gear Plant No. 2 and was a member of the
Billings Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was married to the former Margaret
Strong on August 19, 1950, in Saginaw.
Surviving are his wife; 4 daughters, Mrs.
Raymond (Marlene) Reidel and Mrs. Shirley Lyden of Saginaw, Mrs. Michael (Bonnie) Redman of
Gladwin and Mrs. Robert (Terri) Anderson of Essexville; one brother, Darrell of
Saginaw; one sister, Mrs. Geraldine Fosgitt of Saginaw;
10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Thomas P. Prisza Sr., 48, of 4875 Jones Rd.,
Beaverton, died Monday, Sept. 10, 1990, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Saginaw,
after a long illness.
Born in Wyandotte, Aug. 17, 1942, he moved to
Gladwin County in 1988. Mr. Prisza was a rigger for. Dobson Heavy Haul in Bay
City from 1988 to 1985 when he took a medical retirement. He was a member of
the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3655, All-Bright Shores, Rigger Local 575 Warren
and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Prisza and the former Carla Brown were
married in 1963 in Wyandotte.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his parents,
Ephriam and Geraldine Prisza of Gladwin; and 4
sisters, Mrs. Judy Henderson of Germany, Mrs. Audrey
Lipp, Mrs. Brenda Snyder and Mrs. Jan Kory of Beaverton. A son, Thomas Jr., preceded
him in death July 6,1986.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the

Clement Ratliff Jr., 65, of 834 Hickory St.,
Beaverton, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1991, In the V. A. Medical Center, Arm Arbor,
after a long illness. Bom in Kankakee, 111., Sept 4, 1926, he moved to Gladwin County
2 years ago. Mr. Ratliff was a truck driver for Commercial Car Carrier, he
served in World War II as a Navy seaman and in the Army during the Korean War.
Surviving are his father, Clement Ratliff Sr. of
Beaverton; one sister Mrs. Eileen Wishart of Beaverton; and one brother, James
of Long Island, N. Y.
Rites were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Hall

Arthur J. Rievert, 76, of Beaverton, died Wednesday,
Dec. 16, 1998 at MidMichigan Medical
Center-Midland after a long illness. Rievert was
born Dec. 30, 1921 in Sebewaing. He lived in Gladwin County 17 years and
previously lived in Detroit. He worked for J. L. Hudson in Detroit as a truck driver.
He retired in 1980 after 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II. Arthur was
a member of VFW Post 147 in Livonia, and Albright Shores Eagles Club 3655.
Surviving Mr. Rievert are two sons, William and wife
Janet of Beaverton, and Allen and wife Mary of Canton; one brother, Elmer and
wife Frieda of Sebewaing; and-three grandchildren, Kristen, Katie, and Kurtis
Rievert. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Reger in 1988.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral
Home, Beaverton Chapel with Rev. Mark
Moore officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton. A military rites service was held by the VFW Post 7303. Memorial

Beaverton, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1994, in
the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center - Midland,
following a long illness. Born Oct. 26, 1924 in Crane, Missouri, he moved to
Flint where he worked as a job setter for the General Motors Chevrolet V-8
Plant in Flint. In 1982, Mr. Robbins moved to Beaverton from Flint. He was a
member of the American Division Veterans Association and UAW Local 659.
Mr. Robbins married the former Mary Davis July 25,
1950 in Pine Run. Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 daughters, Jackie and
husband Richard Blundell of Burton, Darlene of Grayling; 1 son, Dennis of
Flint; and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers.
Rites were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, from the Hall

He served in France

13 months, and was discharged from service at Camp Sherman, Ohio, Aug.
19, 1919.
He leaves his parents, brother Daniel,

William Henry Rogers, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry A. Rogers of Billings township, died at
the home of his parents, Tuesday evening, Oct. 2, aged 26 years, 5 months and
11 days. William was born in Flynn township, Sanilac county, April 19, 1897.
Besides his parents he is survived by a brother and sister who reside at home
and a brother who resides in Midland
county. The funeral directed by Floyd Hall of Beaverton, was held Thursday
afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his parents, Rev. G. Killian officiating.
Interment in Billings

MAN FOUND DEAD
Thomas R. Roper, 33, of Bentley Township, was found
dead at the wheel of his car Monday morning, according to Gladwin Sheriff's
deputies. Roper is believed to have pulled off Wisner Rd.
to sleep and preliminary findings of a post mortem Monday indicate his death
was accidental caused by carbon monoxide inhalation.
Deputies were assisted by the Billings
Township Rescue Unit. Billings constable and the

Mrs. J. Josephine Rose, 62, of Billings Township,
died April 6, at Bay City Mercy Hospital, following a long illness. A resident
of Gladwin County 30 years, Mrs. Rose was born in Saginaw Jan. 31, 1910, and
came here from Flint. The former Miss Josephine Knisley and John (Jack) Rose
were married Feb. 2, 1936, in Flint. She was a member of the Billings
Missionary Church and the Billlings W.C.T.U.
Surviving are here husband, John; two sons, John A.
(Sandy) Rose, of Freeland, and Robert L. Rose of Beaverton; two daughters, Mrs.
Walter (Phyllis) Stoddard of Fairgrove, and Miss Kathleen A. Rose of Bay City;
three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Weiderhold of Bridgeport, Mrs. Laura Davis of
Flint and Mrs. Vera Crozier of Saginaw; two brothers, Russell Knisley of
Bridgeport and Hugh Knisley of Saginaw.

Robert
L. Rose, 28, of 3866 Weiman Rd., Beaverton, died of injuries sustained in an
auto accident on the I-75 expressway in Bay County Friday, Feb. 23. Born in Billings Township on April 11, 1950, he had spent his lifetime
here; Mr. Rose served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1971 and was employed in
the Melting Department at Nodular Iron, General Motors, Saginaw.
Surviving are his father, John Rose of Beaverton; one
brother, John A. (Sandy) of Freeland; 2
sisters, Kathleen of Saginaw and Mrs. Walter (Phyllis) Stoddard of Fairgrove;
and his fiance Crystal Shaw of Gladwin.
Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the
Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Fred Wilson officiated and burial
was in the Billings

Township, died Tuesday, November 28,
at the home of her son, Hugh, in Flint, following a brief
illness. Born in Yale,
Mich.,
January 30, 1885, Mrs. Rose had been a resident of Gladwin County
for the past 70 years. The former Miss Roxa Trumble and John Henry Rose were
married in 1906 and he died in April of 1958. Mrs. Rose was a member of the Billings Missionary
Church.
Surviving are two sons, Jack of Beaverton,
and Hugh of Flint; two daughters, Mrs. Isabelle Mead of Harrison, and Mrs.
Phoebe Schulz of Saginaw;
one brother, Robert Trumble of Beaverton;
two sisters, Mrs. Isabelle Martin of Beaverton,
and Mrs. Ann Brown of Saginaw; 14 grandchildren
and 11 great grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at 2:00 at the

Richard H. Savage, 53, of 1250 Estey Rd., Beaverton,
died Wednesday, June 15, in St. Marys
Hospital, Saginaw, after a short illness. Born in
Saginaw Aug. 7, 1934, he moved to Gladwin County 12 years ago from Saginaw. Mr.
Savage was a bricklayer for Helger construction in Midland. He was a member of
the Albright Shores Fraternal Order of Eagles 3655 and a C.B.
radio enthusiast. Mr. Savage was married to the former
Barbara Wilkinson Dec. 19, 1953, in Saginaw.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Richard
Jr. of Saginaw and Kelly of All-Bright Shores; 2 daughters, Cheryle Ann Thomas
of Saginaw and Mrs. Mark (Linda) Tubb of Scott A.F.B., 111.; his mother, Mrs.
Evelyn Savage of Oscoda; one sister, Mrs. Jacklyn David of Oscoda; and 7
grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. from the Hall
Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev. Roy Glasgow officiated and burial was in

Township, Lockwood, Beach,

Schmitt died Sunday at his home following a seven - year illness. He was born
August 1, 1898 in Chicago.
He
served in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War I. He had been a resident of Gladwin County for the past 12 years. Prior to
that he had lived in Saginaw.
Mr. Schmitt married the former Doris Kirby on September 17, 1943 at Bowling Green, O. He is
survived by his wife, one son, Gene at Canton,
O., and one brother, Frank Schmitt. The Rev. Henry Hall will officiated at the
funeral. Burial will be in Billings

Dencie M.
Schuler, 82, of Beaverton,
died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland following a
brief illness. Born July 8, 1918 in Chicago, she was the
daughter of the late Leverett and Emily (Haw) Cottrell. Dencie married Ernest
Schuler, Aug. 24, 1940 in Saginaw. He preceded her in
death in March 1989. They came to Gladwin in 1972. She retired from Michigan
Sugar Company in 1982.
Surviving
are two sons, John and wife Linda of Beaverton and Ernest and wife Katie of
Standish; one daughter, Barbara Harder of Beaverton;
one sister, Kate McGarity of Shields; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren;
and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two
grandchildren, one brother, and one sister. Services were held Tuesday at the
Sisson Funeral Home with Pastor David Kiestler officiating. Burial was in Billings
Township Cemetery.

David Schwartz, 69, a resident of Lockwood Beach, Billings township, died
April 30 at his home. He was born on Feb. 25, 1887 in South Dakota.
He spent most of his life in Gladwin county, except from 1922 to 1942 when he
lived in Detroit.
On July 3, 1940, he was married to the
former Miss Ellen Iversen. She survives him, along with two foster daughters,
Mrs. Marian Franey of Wyandotte, and Mrs. Anna Mae Bonsceour of East Detroit;
two brothers, Henry of Beaverton, and George of Gladwin.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2:00 p.m.

Shier, 75, of Beaverton,
died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland following a
short illness. Born Feb. 14, 1925 in Saginaw,
she lived in Gladwin County 23 years and previously lived in Flint.
Myrtle married Lawrence Shier, Oct. 26, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio.
She was a homemaker and a member of Estey Moose Lodge 456.
Besides
her husband she is survived by one son, Gary of Beaverton; one daughter,
Geraldine and husband Thomas Firth of Lake Worth, Fla.; four grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her parents. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Hall
Funeral Home, Beaverton
with Pastor Steve Shangraw officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton.

Donald
J. Shumway, Donald J. Shumway, 77, of Gladwin, passed away on Wednesday, April
6, 2005 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Gladwin. He was born in Detroit on Oct. 21,
1927 to the late Earl and Gladys (Seymour) Shumway. He married
the former Betty Bowen on March 30, 1946 in Gladwin; she survives him. He was a
retired oil field worker and employee for Dow Chemical.
Surviving
besides his wife Betty are his children, Judy (Walter) Mertens of Lake George,
Linda Hetherington of Gladwin, Vickie (Charles) Brubaker of Beaverton, Deborah
(Gary) Mangas and Ronald (Connie) Bell, both of Gladwin; 33 grandchildren and
40 Great grandchildren; one brother, Robert McLay of West Branch; and one
sister, Sharon McLay of Dallas, Texas. He was predeceased by a son, Gerald
Shumway, and three sisters.
Funeral
services were held April 9 at Sisson Funeral Home, with Alisa Wood presiding.
Burial was at Billings Township
Cemetery.

Gerald J. Shumway, 24, of Zellwood, Fla., lost his
life in an automobile accident Friday, March 2, at Orlando, Fla. Services are
being held Wednesday (today) at 1:00 p.m. at the Mathews Funeral Home with the
Rev. Jerry Locher officiating and burial is in the Billings Cemetery.
Born January 20, 1949, in Gladwin, he attended
schools at Winegars and Beaverton. He and the former Miss Barbara White were
married in July of 1970 in Beaverton, moving to Zellwood, Fla., last July where
he was employed in an orange processing plant.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Donald Shumway of Gladwin; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Judy) Wood, Gladwin,
Mrs. Jerry (Linda) Wood, Midland, Mrs. Charles (Vickie) Brubaker, Apopka, Fla.,
and Mrs. Gary (Debby) Manges, Copperas Cove, Tex.; one brother, Ronald of

Cecil C. Smith, 81, of 3961 Lutzke Rd., Beaverton,
died Thursday, April 29. 1993, in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center,
Midland, after a long illness. Born in Cheboygan, Jan. 28,
1912, he moved to Gladwin County in 1979 from
Detroit. Mr. Smith was in maintenance at the
Detroit Receiving Hospital and retired in 1977. He
was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303.
Mr. Smith and former Eva Hotchkiss were married
March 28, 1944, in Toledo, Ohio.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2
step-daughters, Virginia Schrein of California and Donna
Shanley of Royal Oak; one sister, Gertrude Burrows
of Carsonville; many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews; 12 step-grandchildren
and many great step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Florence
Borden, Luella Ross and Hazel Haggerty and 2 brothers, Ralph and Harold.
Rites were held Monday at noon from the Hall Funeral
Home, Beaverton Chapel. The
Rev. Curt Gordan officiated and burial was in the
Billings Cemetery. Memorials may be made to

passed away suddenly July 31, 2002 in Bay City, Michigan.
He was
born May 14, 1967 to Merle and Beverly (Gower) Smith in Bay City, and worked as a laborer for
Monitor Sugar Company in Bay City. He was a Midland
County resident since
1995, having previously resided in Gladwin. Douglas married Tilitha
Haines-Smith on Feb. 14, 1996 in Midland.
Surviving
are his wife, Tilitha Haines-Smith of Gladwin; son, Amos Smith of Gladwin;
daughters, Sarah Smith of Midland and Terina Haines of Gladwin; parents, Merle
and Beverly Smith of Estey; sisters, Connie Shannon of Beaverton, Anita Green
of Tennessee, Brenda Eddy of Gladwin, and Sue Schaefer of Beaverton; brothers,
Brian Smith of Beaverton, John Smith of Beaverton, and Kevan Smith of Sanford;
and several nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his sister Cheryl Ann Smith.

services were held Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton

Ethel Elizabeth Smith, 88, of Rhodes, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1995, at
the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center in Midland. She was born May 2, 1906,

County to Calvin and
Clare (Riggs) Moore. Mrs. Smith lived
most of her life in the Estey area. She
married Ivan Smith on April 5, 1924, in Midland. He passed away Aug. 30, 1985. She is survived by eight children, Viola
Smith of Rhodes, Lawrence (Pat) Smith of St. Ignace, Millard (Adeline) Smith of
Midland, Earl (Gertrude) Smith of Rhodes, Merle (Beverly) Smith of Rhodes,
Margie (Tom) Valley of Hope, Thelma (Dave) Cole of Rhodes, and James (Salley)
Smith of Rhodes; 37 grandchildren; 65
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lloyd Moore of Texas and Oliver Moore of
Florida; and two sisters, Marjorie Speigel of Florida and Doris Bauder of
Midland. She was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Smith in 1978; a grandson,
Bill Smith on June 5, 1994; a brother; and six sisters.
Services will be held Friday, Jan. 27, 1995, at 11 a.m. at the Sisson Funeral
Home in Gladwin. The Rev. Curtis F. Gordon will officiate, with burial in Billings
Township Cemetery.

He attended Gladwin
County schools and married the former
Ethel E. Moore on April 5, 1924, in Midland. Smith was
a retired farmer in the Rhodes
area. He leaves his wife; sons, Ivan L.
Smith, Millard
Smith, Merle Smith, Earl Smith and James Smith, all of Gladwin County;
daughters, Viola Smith of Gladwin County, and Margie Valley and Thelma Cole of
Midland County; brother James Smith of Hayden Lake, Idaho; 33 grandchildren;
and 35 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Margaret Smith, preceded him in death
in 1978. Four brothers also preceded him in death.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Ware-Smith-Woolever & Co. Funeral
Home, with the Rev.
Timothy Holcomb-Dinsmore of the Bethel Church of the Nazerene officiating.

was married to Minnie Casteel May 2, 1936, in Toledo.

He preceded her in death on October 23, 1966. Surviving are one son, Dr. Dallas

KENNETH SMITH (11 AUG 1920 - 1 JUNE 2004)
Ralph Kenneth Smith, born August 11, 1920 to George
and Millie (Byron) Smith in Pontiac, passed away June 2, 2004 at the age of 83.
Ralph married his wife Martha (Taulbee) Smith on November 15, 1941. Ralph
served his country in WWII in Germany from September 1944 until October 1945.
He was wounded in the battle of the Bulge. Ralph worked for General Motors of
Flint for 30 years and retired in October of 1974. He moved to Beaverton in
November 1974 where he resided until he passed away. He attended Living Hope
Assembly of God in Albright Shores.
Ralph is
survived by his wife, Martha Smith of Beaverton; son John Smith of Big Rapids
and his children Allen and Marci; son Wayne (Donna) Smith of Brown City and
their children Wayne, Jr. and Debra; son Ralph, Jr. (Sandra) Smith of Waterford
and their children Ralph III, Annette and Nikki; son James Smith of Beaverton
and his daughter Kristine; daughter Judy Pleiness of Farwell and her children Thomas,
Kimberly, Shannon and Crissy; daughter Wanda (Tex) Hughes of Millington and

F. (Jun) Solomon, 42, of 2603 Whitney Beach Rd., Beaverton, died Monday, April
25, at his home after a long illness. Born in Saginaw, June 16, 1945, he moved to
Gladwin County 8 years ago from Saginaw. Mr. Solomon was a
machine repairman for Saginaw Manufacturing, General Motors. He served in the
Air Force during Vietnam and was a
member of the UAW. Mr. Solomon and the former Roseltha DeLavern were married
May 7, 1964, in Mt. Clemens.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons,
Jeffrey and Brian of Beaverton; a daughter, Deanna Graves of Beaverton; his mother
and step-father, Rose and Gerald D'Annunzio of Sterling Heights; a grandfather, Frank

one brother, Ronald Solomon of Miami,

Nola
M. Spencer, 82, of Beaverton, died Friday,
Spet. 5, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Gladwin after a short
illness. She was born May 20, 1915 in Gladwin and lived here her whole life,
Nola was a homemaker. The former Nola Woodruff married Ora Spencer, June 23,
1934. He preceded her in death in 1970.
Surviving are two sons, Edward and wife

ILLNESS FATAL TO ORA SPENCER
Ora C. Spencer, 65, of Billings Township, died
Friday, Feb. 6, at the Gladwin Hospital followig a long illness. Born at Mt.
Forest on June 7, 1904, he had lived in Gladwin County most of his life. Mr.
Spencer was a lineman for Dow Chemical Co. He was married to the former Nola
Woodruff on June 23, 1934, in Sanford.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Keith,
of Midland, and Edward of Buffalo, N.Y.; four brothers, Charles of California,
A.D., of Georgia, John, of Fostoria, and Sam, of Gladwin; three sisters, Mrs.
Vera Brady, of California, Mrs. Grace Gogswell, of Evart, and Mrs. Edna Sicard,
of Harrison; and seven grandchildren. Two daughters preceded him in death.
Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Hall
Funeral Home. The Rev. Neil G. Keyes officiated and burial was in the Billings

H. Stech, 74, of 4277 Lake Drive, All-Bright Shores, died suddenly Saturday, March 23, at Midland
Hospital after only a
short illness. Born September 16, 1899, in Warren, Ind.,
he was a retired employee of Sun Oio Company. Mr. Stech had been a resident of Gladwin
County for the past
38 years, since 1936, coming here from West Branch. He and the former Moyna T.
Scott were married March 31, 1923, in South Bend, Ind.
He was a member of the Beaverton F. & A.M. and the Consistory.
Surviving are his wife, Moyna; 2 sons,
Ernest Jr. of Gary,
Ind.,
and George of Midland; one daughter, Mrs. Earl (Rosemary) Siebert fo Midland; a brother, Charles
of New Jersey, a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Click of Nowata, Okla.;
6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. A son, Lowell preceded him in death.
Services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at
Hall Funeral Home, Beaverton, with the Rev.
Neil Keyes officiating. A Masonic memorial service was held Monday evening.

F. Jerry Stevens, 94, of Clarkston, Michigan passed away Sept. 11, 2003 at North
Oakland
Medical
Center in Clarkston.
She was born on July 10, 1909 to Jesse and Mildred (Skidmore) Folsom in Lapeer,
and married Earl Stevens on Oct. 19, 1935 in Vassar. He preceded her in death
in 1985. Jerry was a homemaker who lived in Oakland County
for 19 years, having previously lived in Beaverton.
She was a member of Williams
Lake
Church of the Nazarene in Waterford,
Michigan.
She is
survived by her daughter Kay (Jack) ODea of Clarkston; grandchildren Renee
McClain of Pontiac, Dawn Pniewski of Clarkston and Michael Pniewski of Pontiac;
six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Richardson of Fostoria and Helene
Brinker of Lapeer; and several nieces and nephews.
In
addition to her husband, Jerry was predeceased by her parents, seven brothers
and two sisters. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 at Hall
Funeral Home in Beaverton
with Pastor Daniel Wine officiating. Burial took place in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton.
Visitation was held Sunday at the funeral home.

Stoddard, 56, of Beaverton,
died July 14, 2000 at home following a long illness. Born March 4, 1944 in Beaverton,
she was the daughter of John and Jessie (Knisley) Rose. She lived in Gladwin
County 11 years and previously lived in Tuscola County. She was a homemaker and a
member of Billings
Missionary
Church.
Surviving
are one daughter, Elizabeth and husband Randy Stanley of Midlothian, Texas; one
son, Matthew of Saginaw; one sister, Kathleen Rose of Midland; one brother,
John and wife Ruth Rose of Freeland; stepmother, Wilma Rose of Beaverton; and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one
brother, Robert Rose in 1979.
Services
were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Steve
Shangraw officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery in Beaverton.

E. Swinson, 60, of 1311 Estey Rd., All-Bright Shores, Billings Township,
died sudden Wednesday, Feb. 23, at his home of a heart attack. Born in Gladwin
County, January 1,
1917, he had been a life-time resident of the county. Mr. Swinson was a retired
Dow Chemical employee and operated the All-Bright Shores Realty until a year
ago. He had been an active member of the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce and
a past chairman of the Ice Carnival Committee. He and the former Minnie
Chambers were married August 16, 1952, in Bay City,
and she survives him.
Other survivors are 2 sons; William Sargent
of Beaverton and Robert Sargent of Midland; 2 daughters, Mrs. Steven (Sheila)
Jones of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Alfred (Barbara) Paul of Beaverton; 6 brothers,
Frank, William and Richard of Rhodes, Melvin of Midland, Donald of Bay City and
Bobbie of Sanford; 4 sisters, Mrs. Betty Knight of Anchorage, Alaska, Mrs.
Donna Witer and Mrs. Leona Sheets, both of Billings, and Mrs. Ruth King of
Columbus, Ga.; and 11 grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from

and Bobbie of Midland, and Donald of Bay City; four daughters, Mrs. Betty
Knight of Gladwin, Mrs. Donna Witer and Mrs. Leona Sheets of the Beaverton
area, and Mrs. Ruth King of Georgia; 41 grandchildren and 31 great
grandchildren.
Services are today (Wednesday) at 2:00 p.m.

died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001. She was born in Milford, Mass.,
Oct. 7, 1916, to Frank and Annie Fales. She married Donald P. Taylor, June 13,
1936. He preceded her in death in 1992. Ina moved to Pontiac in 148, then moved to Beaverton in 1960,
where she worked for the United States Post Office in Beaverton.
She moved to Florida
in 1973, where she worked and retired from the Altamonte Springs
school system. She was a long time member of the Sanlando United Methodist Church
in Longwood,
Fla.
She will
be sadly missed by those who survive: daughters Marion I. Tuttle of Ocean
Springs, Miss., Judith A. and Terry Whittington of Beaverton; sons, DeeJay and
Inne Taylor of Logan, Utah, and Mark and Debra Taylor of Casselberry, Fla.; 13
grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Frank W. (Bruce) Fales of Florida, George and Natalie Wood of
Massachusetts; two sisters, Helen Brydon and Betty and Allen Sibley of
Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one
brother, Phillip A. Fales; and two sisters, Ruth Maloof and Frances A. Fales.

Alexander
Trumble died April 13 at his home in Billings, aged 52 years, 9
months and 3 days. He was born in Detroit and made his home in
Yale until about 17 years ago, when he moved to Gladwin county. He was married
to Isabell Armstrong Nov. 16, 1884, to which union was born five daughters and
one son, one girl preceding in infancy.
He leaves to mourn his loss four daughters,
Mrs. John Rose, Mrs. Jay Brown, Mrs. Bell-McGrath of Beaverton,
Mrs. Chet Stark of Yale, and one son, Robert of Billings; also one sister, Mrs.
Agnes Benjamin of Yale and one half-brother, John of Yale, and nine
grandchildren. Interment took place in Billings

Robert F. Trumble, 76, of Beaverton,
died a sudden death due to an auto accident Wednesday, Dec. 16, 1998, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.
He was born March 21, 1922 in Billings
Township, Gladwin County.
Robert married Rosemarie Cameron on June 30, 1946, in
Beaverton. He
worked at the Midland County Road Commission for 29 years as a heavy equipment
operator, and retired in 1984. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army in World War
II. Mr. Trumble was a lifetime resident of Gladwin. He was a member of the Estey Seventh
Day
Adventist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Trumble of Beaverton; sons and
daughters-in-law, Robert Lee and Cathie Trumble and Mark S. and Jacqueline
Trumble, all of Beaverton; daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and Steve Knapp of
West Branch, Betty Lou and Kenneth Lambert of Gladwin, Sheila Sue and Harold
Mills of Angwin, Calif. and Brenda Marie and Casimir Toton of Ellsworth; 19
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Grace McPherson and Ann
Simsack, both of Beaverton. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leo
Trumble.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at the Seventh Day Adventist
Church, Edenville. Pastor

retired farmer and a veteran of World War I. He and the former Frances Inez
Clark were married on June 30, 1920, in Bentley. She preceded him in death
November 21, 1960.

Jean, Feb. 2, 1970 in Walled

as a mechanic, retiring in 1991 after 23 years. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran
Church, Gladwin.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,

Commerce Township; one stepdaughter, Jill Rossetto of Commerce Township; one
sister, Vernice Myers of Cody, Wy.; and six granddaughters. He was preceded in

Cecil E. Watkins, 81, of Beaverton, died Thursday,
July 26, 2001 at home. Born June 13, 1920 in Ironton, Ky., he was the son of
Allie and Martha (Chambers) Watkins. He lived in Gladwin County since 1978 and
previously lived in Lincoln Park. Cecil married Mary Alice (McCullough), March
5, 1982 in Lincoln Park. He was a supervisor for Ford Motor Company, River
Rouge Plant in Dearborn, retiring in 1975. He was also a veteran of World War
II, serving in the Marine Corps.
Besides his
wife he is survived by one son, Mark and wife Laura of Belleville; one
daughter, Nancy and husband Norman Wellman of Melvindale; one stepdaughter,
Theressa Whetnall of Beaverton; one stepson, Rickie Hudspeth; six grandchildren;
one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents and two brothers.

was an automotive mechanic and served in Vietnam
as a private in the Army. Mr. Weaver and the former Brenda Dawson were married
July 27, 1968, in Troy.

following a short illness.
He
was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Olustee, Okia. He was employed by the A&P Tea
Co. as a meat cutter for 35 years in Bay City,
Flint, and Saginaw.
He retired in 1972. He moved from Bay City
to Albright Shores in 1968. He was a member of
the Albright Shores Eagles Club No. 3655, a lifetime member of the Bay City
Moose Club No. 169, and a member of Meat Cutters Local No. 539 of Detroit. He married the former Catherine Williams,
March 20, 1955, in Bay City.
He
leaves his wife; daughters, Mrs. Edward (Jackie) Connolly of Carleton and Mrs.
Norbert (Nancy) Napieralski of
Tecumseh; son, Victor Whipple of Albright
Shores; six grandchildren; two great
grandchildren; and a brother, Pete Whipple of Georgetown, Ky.
A daughter, Patricia Wielock, died April 24, 1975.

WOUND IS FATAL
Carolynn White, 19, of Estey Road, Beaverton,
was dead on arrival at the Gladwin
Area Hospital
Monday afternoon of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in her abdomen. Miss White,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman White, was found east of her parents' home
about 4:15 p.m. by her sister, Mrs. Barbara Shumway, Sheriff Walter Scott said.
A .410 shotgun was near her body, he added.
She had left her home earlier saying that
she was going hunting, Scott said. Her brother, David, told officers he heard a
shot about 9:30 p.m. Miss White was born on Jan. 4, 1952, in Gladwin.
Besides her parents, she is survived by two
brothers, David and Larry, both at home; two sisters, Mrs. Linda Poole and Mrs.
Barbara Shumway, of Rt. 2, Beaverton; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William

Franklin White, 79, of Gladwin, died Tuesday
following a three year illness. A lifetime resident of Gladwin
County, he was born in Billings Township on Sept. 7, 1881, and was
married to the former Edna Wilder on Dec. 23, 1909, in Gladwin. Mr. White
operated a farm in Billings
Township until 1914
when he moved to Gladwin. He served as Billings Township
supervisor and treasurer for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife, Edna; four
daughters, Mrs. Blanche Witer, of Bay City, Mrs. Frances Holtzberry, of
Saginaw, Mrs. Elsie Dickens and Mrs. Lois Sischo of Gladwin: two brothers,
Hugh, of Alberta, Canada, and William, of Billings Township; a sister, Mrs.
Sarah Livingstone, of Ontario, Canada; 22 grandchildren and six great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2
p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. Ross Tracy will officiate and burial is

was born Feb. 27, 1906 in Pinconning. Mr. Whitney was retired from Buick Motor
Division, Flint and has lived in Gladwin County since 1966.
He
married the former Gertrude Qkoniewski on April 20, 1931. She died on Aug.15,
1978.
He
leaves son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Marjorie Whitney of Millington; eight grandchildren and fifteen great
grandchildren.
Services
will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gladwin Chapel of Hall Funeral Home with
burial in Billings
Township Cemetery.

Evan (Andy) Williams, 48, of All-Bright Shores,
died Monday at Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor,
after a long illness. Born in Sioux City,
Iowa, on Dec. 1, 1914, he came to
Gladwin County 10 years ago from Mt.
Morris. He was
employed at Buick Motor Division and was a veteran of World War II, serving as
a medical technician.
His wife, Neva, survives him; also his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Williams, of Clio; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Jean
Manor, of Genesee, and Mrs. Loretta Joanne Bower, of Flint; a son, George
McMally, of Parma; one sister, Mrs. Katherine Harrison, of Bay City; four
brothers, the Rev. Orville Williams, of Yakima, Wash., John, of Arkansas City,
Kan., Vernon, of Plymouth, and Robert, of Flint; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1
p.m. at the Benjamin Funeral Home in Clio, with the Rev. Floyd Kromton

St., Beaverton,
died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 8, of a heart attack. Born in Hendricks, Minn.,
on August 20, 1917, he moved to Gladwin
County in June from Clawson after owning property here for 13 years.
Mr. Wilson was a retired mechanic for
Stark-Hickey Ford in Royal Oak. He was
a member of the D.A.V. Leafdale Post 19 in Royal Oak.
The Clawson Methodist
Church, Billings Senior Citizens Club
and was a Boy Scout leader in Clawson.
He and the former Margaret Smith were married July 20, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Minn.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons,
Mark of Madison Heights and Glen of Detroit; one brother, Milton of Duluth,
Minn.; and one grandson. Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Hall
Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev. Carter Miller officiated and burial
was in the Billings
Township Cemetery.

Stanley Wizner, 76, of 3434 Wieman Rd., Beaverton, died Sunday. April 19, 1992
in the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center, Gladwin, after a long illness.
Born
in Bay City, May 7, 1915 he was a fabricator for Jo-Ad (Prototype) Industries,
Inc. in Madison Heights from 1963 to 1980, when he moved to Gladwin County. Mr.
Wizner was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Edenville and the Warren
Fraternal Order of Eagles 2437. He worked at the Hudson Motor Car Co. in Detroit
during World War II when it was changed to Aircraft Manufacturing.
Mr.
Wizner and the former Annabelle Jasin were married May 28, 1938. in Detroit.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Jason of Pontiac, Christoper of
Sault Ste. Marie and Andre of Warren; 5 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Rozanne) Laphew
and Mrs. Daniel (Madonna) Boris of Shelby Township, Mrs. Charles (Romona)
Steele of Canton, Mrs. Charles (Charmaine) Grego of Beaverton and Mrs. Clarence
(Valentine) Dixon of Fenton; one brother. Stitch of Bay City; 2 sisters,
Eleanor Smith of Grand Rapids and Valerie St Andrew of Beaverton; 19
grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister,
Isabelle Melvin.
Services
were held today, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. from St. Anne's Catholic Church. The
Rev. Father James Heller officiated and burial was in the Billings Township
Cemetery. Awake service was held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home in

Jason C. Wizner, 53, of Prescott, died Tuesday, Nov.
28, 1995 at Mio. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Prescott; 2 sons, Jason
and wife Pamela of North Carolina and Robb of Toledo; one daughter, Sherry and
husband Mark Bridger of Lapeer; his mother, Annabelle Wizner of Beaverton; 5
sisters, Rozanne Laphew of Beaverton, Romona Steele of Canton, Charmaine Grego
of Beaverton, Tina Dixon of Fenton and Madonna Boris of Shelby Township; and 2
brothers, Christopher Wizner of Strongs, and Andre Wizner of Warren. He was
preceded in death by his father, Clements Wizner in 1992.
Services were held Saturday, Dec. 2 from the
Steuerriol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch. Burial was in the Billings
Township Cemetery following services officiated by the Rev. Father Richard

John C. Wois, 81, of 4926 Wixom Dr., Beaverton, died
Monday Jan. 28, 1991, at his home after a long illness. Born in Camden, N. J., Aug. 29, 1909, he
moved to Gladwin County in 1977 from Hamtramck. Mr. Wois owned a Milk Depot and
Dairy Bar in Harper Woods until retiring in 1977.
He served in the Army as a sergeant during World War
II and was a member of the DAV and
American Legion. Mr. Wois and the former Anna Nosek
were married in 1933 in Detroit.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 2 sons, Alfred
of Roseville and John Jr. of Warren; a sister, Mrs. Alfreda Stajniak of
Hamtramck; and 3 grandchildren. A daughter, Patricia Marszalec preceded him in death
in 1984.
Rites will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Hall
Funeral Home, Beaverton Chapel. The Rev.
Father James Heller will officiate and burial will
be in the Billings Township Cemetery. The American Legion will hold graveside

Edward S. Woodruff, 86, resident of Gladwin
county for nearly 50 years, died at the home of his son Earl, in Billings township, Tuesday, May 9th. Funeral services
were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Woodruff home in Billings
township with the Rev. Henry Kreulen of the Beaverton
Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was in the Billings Cemetery.
Son of Henry and Martha Woodruff, he was born in Croswell, Sanilac county, on
November 7, 1857. He was married in 1882 to Emmaretta Shreeve who preceded him
in death in 1926.
The Woodruffs came to Gladwin county in 1895
and settled on their farm in Billings
township where he has since resided except for two years spent in Port Huron. Surviving are two sons, George, of Port Huron, and Earl, of Billings
township, 14 grandchildren. Two daughters, Era and Nellie, preceded their

died suddenly Thursday, July 19, at his home. Born in Sanilac County
on April 10, 1893, he had spent his lifetime here. He was a retired farmer and
a Gladwin County Road Commissioner for 25 years. Mr. Woodruff was a member of
the Billings Missionary Church.
He and the former Mary Ellen Crowell were married July 9, 1911, in Billings Township. She preceded him in death
January 16, 1969.
Surviving are 5 daughters, Mrs. Earl (Lila)
Erway and Mrs. Frank (Wanda) Smith of Gladwin, Mrs. Nola Spencer of Beaverton,
Mrs. Gerald (Blanche) Wilson of Pinconning and Mrs. Robert (Doris) Bock of
Estey; 4 sons, Earl, Howard and Jack of Beaverton and Neal of Gladwin; 34
grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and 8 great great grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Billings Missionary
Church. The Rev.
Robert Shoaff officiated and burial was in the Billings Cemetery.

E. Woodruff passed away at her home in Billings
township, Saturday night of inward goitre. With her husband she was engaged in
the mereantile business at Gerish Dam, having moved there a few years ago, from
Estey, where they were also similarly engaged. The funeral was held from the
home Wednesday afternoon, with burial in Billings.

S. Woodruff, 79, of Lake Ann and formerly of Beaverton,
died suddenly Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin.
Born Jan. 21, 1920 in Billings Township, Gladwin
County, he lived in Lake Ann
since 1984 and previously lived in Billings
Township, Gladwin County.
Howard married the former Evelyn Levandoski, Aug. 22, 1943 in Standish. He
worked for The Dow Chemical Company, Midland
as a building administrator for 38 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of
the Lake Ann United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife he is survived by one
daughter, Judy DePodesta of Rockford; two sons, Bob and wife Cindy, and Dick
and wife Barb, all of Beaverton; one brother, Neal of Gladwin; three sisters,
Wanda Smith of Gladwin, Blanche Wilson of Pinconning, and Doris Bock of Rhodes;
nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and special friends, Sarah and
George Rosiak, and Jeff, Greg, and Christine Rosiak. He was preceded in death
by a baby, Howard Samuel Woodruff in 1952; two sisters, Lila Erway and Nola
Spencer.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with Rev. Charles officiating. Burial was in Billings Township
Cemetery, Beaverton.

died suddenly Wednesday, May 20, at his home. He was born in Billings Township, Nov. 16, 1926, and had
spent his lifetime here. Mr. Woodruff was a bus driver for the Beaverton schools and a part-time Beaverton City patrolman. He was a sergeant in
the Army during World War II. Mr. Woodruff and the former Donna (Swinson) Witer
were married May 12, 1981, in Beaverton.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son,
Lon of Midland; 2 daughters, Mrs. Rick (Sharman) Allen of Midland and Erica of
Chicago, Ill.; 3 step-sons, Joseph, James and Michael Witer of Beaverton; 2
step-daughters, Mrs. Brian (Barbara) Rowland of Plantation, Fla. and Mrs. Lloyd
(Patricia) Barnes of Gladwin; 3 brothers, Earl of Beaverton, Howard of Lake Ann
and Neal of Gladwin; 5 sisters, Mrs. Lila Erway and Mrs. Wanda Smith of
Gladwin, Mrs. Nola Spencer of Beaverton, Mrs. Blanche Wilson of Pinconning and
Mrs. Doris Bock of Rhodes; and 16 grandchildren.

J. Ziegler, 96, formerly of Gladwin and Saginaw,
and Memphis, Tenn., died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001 at
Oregon Manor Nursing Home. Born Aug. 12, 1905 in Rutland, Iowa,
she was the loving daughter of John and Ellen Schultz. Tilda and her husband,
Paul, served as a missonary for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Lusaka, Zambia from 1953 until 1956. She was
a manager of Kitchen Service at Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw for 10 years.
Surviving are two daughters, JoAnne and
husband Henry Beisel of Sun City, Calif., and Pauline Stransky of Marana,
Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; many
great-grandchildren; one sister, May West of Humboldt, Iowa;
and one brother, Richard Schultz of Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul; and two sons, John and David.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at
Oregon Manor Nursing Home with Rev. Scott Ziegler officiating. Burial will be
held at Billings Cemetery,

W. Ziegler, 72, of Hope, died suddenly Friday, April 19, at the Gladwin Area Hospital.
Born in Rockwell, Iowa, on Feb. 16, 1902, he was a self-employed
carpenter and a maintenance man at the Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw. Mr. Ziegler moved to Hope seven years ago
from Saginaw. He was a member of the
Billings Senior Citizens Club and the Sanford Lutheran
Church. He and the
former Tilda Schultz were married on July 12, 1925, in Albert Lea, Minn.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Joanne Harper and Mrs. Pauline Stransky, both of San Diego, Calif.; two sons, John of LaCrosse,
Wisc. and David of Memphis, Tenn.; five sisters, Mrs. Elsie Harrenstein of
Smith Center, Ka., Mrs. Eleanor Dirks of Park Rapids, Minn., Mrs. Theodora
Sanders of VanMeter, Iowa, Mrs. Rosenna Voelk of Kansas City, Kan. and Mrs.
Hazel Bliss of Clear Lake, Iowa; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Hall Funeral Home in Beaverton. The
