VERONA BONNIE AULT (23 JULY 1923 - 14 MARCH 1979)

 

Mrs. Verona (Bonnie) Ault of Detroit and Gladwin, died Wednesday, March 14, in Henry Ford Hospital following a long illness. Born in Gladwin on July 23, 1923, she served in the Marine Corps during World War II. She was a member of the Gladwin F.O.E. Auxiliary No. 3292 and the Sugar Springs Property Owners Association. The former Bonnie Shell, she was married to Bud Ault in 1948.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Cheryl) Creedon of Gladwin, Mrs. Thomas (Toni) Bowers of North Carolina and Mrs. Gary (Terry) Ianni of Detroit, and Cindy at home; 4 sons, Randy of Livonia, Bill, Buddy and Kevin at home; 2 sisters, Mrs. Valda Greer and Hazel Frye of Gladwin; and one brother, Don Shell of Gladwin.

   Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with the Rev. Robert Shoaff officiating. The body was cremated. Gladwin County Record dated 03-21/1979 Column - 2 Page - 2

JAMES W. BAILEY, SR (15 DEC 1922 - 10 MAY 1996)

 

James W. Bailey Sr., 73, of Mt. Morris and formerly of Gladwin, died Friday, May 10, 1996. Born Dec. 15, 1922 in Flint, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He survived 5 battles and received several medals, including the Silver Star. Mr. Bailey retired from AC Spark Plug in 1982 with 30 years of service. He married the former OnaLee Matthews Sept. 7, 1946 in Gladwin.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, James Bailey Jr. of Flint, Ronald and wife Diane of Flushing, and Daniel and wife Rose of Flint; 2 daughters, Carol and husband Norman Nordbye of Columbiaville, and Nancy and husband Ed Sizemore of Highland Township; one brother, Robert L. Bailey of Flint; one sister, Cecilia Earegood of Flint; 16 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, David Edward and a brother, Lawrence Bailey.

   Rites were held at 10 a.m. Monday from the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Elder Stanley Muma officiated and burial was in Butman Cemetery, Gladwin. Gladwin County Record dated 05-15/1996 Column - 3 Page - 2

 

LAWRENCE CALVIN BAILEY (26 FEB 1926 - 30 DEC 1995)

 

LAWRENCE CALVIN BAILEY

 

Lawrence Calvin Bailey, 69, of Mio and formerly of Nester Township, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 1995 at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch following a long illness. Bom Feb. 26, 1926 in Nester Township, he had been employed as a bartender at North of the Border Bar.

 

Surviving are a son, Kenneth and wife Viola of Roscommon; one daughter, Linda and husband

Steven Williamson of Roscommon; 2 brothers, William and Robert, both of Mt. Morris; one sister, Cecilia Eargood of Flint; 10 grandchildren; and 4 greatgrandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert, June 23, 1989. Rites will be held at 1 p.m.

Thursday from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin chapel. Elder Stanley Muma will officiate and

burial will be in the Butman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m.

ROBERT LLOYD "MOSES" BAILEY, JR (29 JULY 1956 - 18 JULY 2003)

 

Robert L. “Moses” Bailey, Jr. , 46, of Houghton Lake, Michigan passed away July 18, 2003 in Grayling as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born July 29, 1956 to Robert Sr. and Gertrude (Mason) Bailey in Gladwin. Self-employed, Robert lived in Roscommon County for the last three years, having previously resided in Mt. Morris. He was a member of the Michigan affiliate of the North Carolina Chapter of the Outlaws.

 

He is survived by his wife Glenna Barringer of Houghton Lake; sons Robert Bailey III of North Carolina and Christopher Bailey of Houghton Lake; daughter Christina Bailey of Houghton Lake; step-sons Jason Barringer of Houghton Lake and David Melding of Flint; step-daughters Katy Barringer and Jennifer Barringer, both of Houghton Lake; mother Gertrude Bailey of Houghton Lake; and sister Debra Bailey of Mt. Morris. He was preceded in death by his father.

 

Funeral services and visitation were held Monday, July 21 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin. Pastor Brad Withrow officiated. Burial took place in Butman Township Cemetery.

 

ROBERT L. BAILEY (23 DEC 1947 - 20 JUNE 1989)

Robert L. Bailey, 41, of 621 S. M-30, Gladwin, died Tuesday, June 20, 1989, in the Clare Nursing

Home after an illness of 5 years. Born in Gladwin, Dec. 23, 1947, he had spent most of his life here. Mr. Bailey was an operator at Kal Plastics and also operated an adult foster care home. He was a member of the Gladwin I.O.O.F. Mr. Bailey and the former Kathleen Blake were married Feb.18,1967, in Gladwin.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Kevin, Martin and Troy of Gladwin; his mother, Mrs. Donna Gault of Houghton Lake; his father, Lawrence Bailey of Houghton Lake; grandparents,

Mrs. Ellen Gary and Calvin and Cozy Bailey of Gladwin; one brother, Kenneth of St. Helen; one

sister, Linda Williamson of Houghton Lake; and 2 grandchildren.

 

Services were held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Burton Kincaid officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 6-28/1989 Column – 4 Page – 2.

 

STANLEY K. BENMARK (31 AUG 1928 - 26 APRIL 2005)

Stanley K. Benmark, 76, of Flint, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005 at Brian’s House in Davison. Stanley was born in Flint on Aug. 31, 1928, son of the late John and Dora Benmark. He married Margo Rumer on Feb. 27, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Margo; his children, Stanley II (Stacy) and Susan K. Benmark; grandchildren, Ben, Gabriella, Neil, James, and Spencer; and Great grandchildren, Maikayla and Lacy.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28 at Allen Funeral Home in Davison, with pastor Susan Lidums officiating. Burial took place in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association.

EDNA ALICE (ENTREKIN) BLAKE (5 JUNE 1927 - 10 AUG 2003)

Edna A. Blake, 76, of Gladwin, died Aug. 10, 2003 at home after a sudden illness. She was born June 5, 1927 to Owen and Grace (Schuler) Entrekin at Roscommon. Edna retired in 1980 from her maintenance occupation at Clear Lake Ranch in Roscommon. She lived in Gladwin County her whole life. On July 28, 1945 she married Ralph Blake in Gladwin. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Surviving her are her daughter Kathy Bailey of Gladwin; grandsons Kevin, Marty and Troy Bailey of Gladwin; great grandchildren Kimmy, Billy, Santana and Lindsey Bailey of Gladwin; great great grandson Joshua Kline of Gladwin; sister Leonora Vergason of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin. Burial will take place in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin.

JOHN ORAN BLAKE (20 MAY 1918 - 17 MARCH 1994)

John O. Blake, 75, of 3636 Eagleson Rd., Gladwin, died Thursday, March 17, 1994, in Pleasant View Horae in Sage Township after a long illness. He was bom in Gladwin on May 20, 1918, and moved back to Gladwin 10 years ago from Flint Mr. Blake was a machine operator for Buick Motors in Flint and retired in 1970. He served in the Army during World War II.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters, Cecelia Howard of Clio and Gayla Pendergrass of Flint; a brother,

Ralph of Gladwin; a sister, Dorothy Good of Gladwin; and 5 grandchildren.

 

Rites were held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Robert Brown officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 3-23/1994 Column – 2 Page – 2.

 

LOWELL L. BLAINE (28 FEB 1935 - 8 FEB 2001)

Lowell L. Blaine, 65, of Beaverton, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at home following a short illness. Born Feb. 28, 1935 in Saginaw, he lived in Gladwin County since 1983 and previously lived in Flint. Lowell married Barbara Dickinson, Jan. 8, 1994 in Beaverton. He previously married Nora Blaine, May 7, 1955. She preceded him in death in 1991. He worked as a mechanic for A.C. Spark Plug Division, Goodwill Industries in Flint.

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Timothy and wife Lori of Harrison and David of Jackson; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda Blaine; one brother; and one sister. Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Mark Moore officiating. Burial was in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin.

LEOLA (CUDDIE) BLOCK (30 JAN 1912 - 3 OCT 2001)

Leola Block, 89, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001 at Michigan Christian Center in Grand Rapids. Born in Gladwin Jan. 30, 1912 to the late Warner and Mary (Gray) Cuddie, she married Dolliver Block Sept. 15, 1935 at Skeels Baptist Church. She lived in Gladwin all of her life and was a school teacher for 32 years. She was a member of the Skeels Baptist Church and was the oldest living charter member. She taught Sunday School and started the Skeels Vacation Bible School.

She is survived by her husband; her children, Rev. Duane and wife Marjorie of Cortex, Colo., Dale and wife Joyce Lyn of Lakeland, Fla., Rev. Donald and wife Patricia of Caledonia, and Darla and husband Rev. Jeff William of Chesaning; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon Cuddie of Fla., and Ward Cuddie of Gladwin; and one sister, Marion House of Clare. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ellis and a sister, Arlene.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the Skeels Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Johnson and Rev. Carl Briggs presiding and burial in Butman Township Cemetery. The family request memorials go to Bibles International. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

DELBERT R. BOAKES (17 OCT 1918 - 4 MAR 2009)

John Boakes, Sr., who died last Tuesday at his home in Butman township; was born January 2, 1862, in Canada. He married Elizabeth L. McCallum on July 17, 1883. Surviving besides Mrs. Boakes are four children; Mrs. Claude Haddix of Evart; Mrs. Carl Schimmeyer, of Saginaw, Bert Boakes, Jr., of Fife Lake; fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. SADIE T. (BROWN) BOAKES (26 MAY 1894 - 10 MAY 1968)

 

RITES HELD FOR MRS. BOAKES

 

   Services were held Monday for Mrs. Sadie T. Boakes, 5870 Round Lake Road, in Butman Township. Mrs. Boakes died Friday, May 10, following hospitalization of about three weeks. Born May 26, 1894, in St. Louis, Mich., she had been a resident of Gladwin County since childhood. The former Sadie T. Brown and Bert C. Boakes were married in Gladwin Nov. 5, 1911. She was a member of the Butman Brethren in Christ Church.

   Survivors include her husband Bert; one son, Delbert of Gladwin; two daughters, Mrs. Homer Phillips (Rose) of Midland, and Mrs. Clifford Murphy (Marie) of Mt. Morris; eight grandchidren and nine great grandchildren.

   The Rev. Henry Schmidt and Rev. G. G. Lyons officiated at the 1:00 services at the Miner Funeral Home. Burial was in the Butman Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 05-15/1968 Column - 2 Page - 2

 

MARY LURENE (HOLLENBAUGH) BOWERS (8 FEB 1932 - 17 JAN 2001)

 

Mary L. Bowers, 68, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Gladwin following a long illness.

Born Feb. 8, 1932 in Gladwin, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Carpenter) Hollenbaugh. She was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Mary married Max Bowers, Jan. 28, 1950 in Angola, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Gladwin Eagles Auxiliary, Aerie #3292.

 

Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Randy and wife Louise of Roscommon, and Michael of Romulus; one brother, Daniel and wife Dawn Hollenbaugh of Parrish, Fla.; one sister, Helen and husband Zarold Walters of Gladwin; grandchildren, Cameron Chisholm, Yvonne and Kirk Bragg, Craig Chisholm, and Michelle Chisholm, all of Roscommon, Gloria Lynn Bowers and Michael Bowers, both of Westland, and Renee Bowers of Gladwin; five great-grandsons; and three great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, and two sisters. Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Donald Roberts officiating. Burial was in Butman Cemetery, Gladwin. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

 

EDWARD STEWARD BREAULT, SR (2 JAN 1893 - 3 MARCH 1961)

   Edward Breault, 68, Gladwin died Friday following an illness of three months. A lifetime resident of Gladwin County, Mr. Breault was born here on Jan. 2, 1893. On Nov. 24, 1914, he was married to the former Laura Cronk in Gladwin. He was employed by the Gladwin County Road Commission and State Highway Dept.

   Survivors include his widow, Laura; four sons, Kenneth, Edward Jr., and Wayne, of Gladwin, and Grant, of Flint; a daughter Mrs. Evelyn Yeager, of Gladwin; two brothers, Murnie and John, of Gladwin; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Kern, of Gladwin; 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

EDWARD STEWARD BREAULT, JR (5 JAN 1919 - 22 NOV 1999)

 

     Edward S. Breault Jr., , 80, of Gladwin, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999 at his home. Born Jan. 5, 1919 in Butman Township, he was the son of Edward and Laura Cronk Breault. Edward married Vera Ockerman, Nov. 29, 1941 at Hockaday. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from The Dow Chemical Company in 1980.

   Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Connie and husband Kenneth Heath of Milan, Linda and husband Jim Jones of Gladwin, Sherri and husband Toni Pekar of Eaton, Ohio; one son, Edward and wife Jeanette of Woodstock, Ga.; one brother, Frederick Wayne of Gladwin; one sister, Evelyn Friesen of Gladwin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Grant and Kenneth.

   Services were held at 1 p.m. last Wednesday at the Sisson Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Roberts officiating. Burial was in Butman Township Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated

 

BLANCHE (WESTOVER) BRIGGS (01 AUG 1888 – 31 MAY 1967)

 

Rites Daturday for Mrs. Briggs

Mrs. Percy Briggs, 78, died at her home in Butman Township Wednesday, May 31, following an illness of several months.
The former Blanche Westover was born in West Branch Aug. 1, 1888.  She was married to Percy Briggs, who survives her, July 14, 1911 in Butman.  Survivors besides her husband are a son, Chester of Pontiac; two brothers, Joseph Westover of Wayne and Charles Westover of Pontiac;
three sisters, Mrs. George Foote of Gladwin, Mrs. Donald (Neva) Stuck of Zilwaukee, and Mrs. Ben (Nellie) Reamer of Redford; three grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Miner Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Allen, of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in the Butman Township Cemetery.

Passes Away at Son’s Home

Mrs. Deborah C. Briggs, 89, died at the home of her son in Butman township Wednesday, Dec 21 after an illness of several months.  Mrs. Briggs was born Aug. 10, 1866 in Ontario, Canada.  She married Daniel Briggs in April, 1886, in Lexington Mich.  Her husband, one brother and eight sisters preceded her in death.  Survivors are one son, Percy of Butman; one grandson and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 24, 15 2 p.m. at Miner Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Easton officiating.  Burial will be in the Butman cemetery.

GRACE E. (MONROE) (SPRAGUE) BRIGGS (17 MAY 1894 – 08 OCT 1975)

 

Mrs. Grace E. Briggs, 81, of 2139 Cemetery Rd., Butman Township, died Wednesday, October 8, at Gladwin Area Hospital.  Born May 17, 1894, in Pittsford, Mich., she came to Gladwin County in
1908.  The former Grace Monroe was married to Arthur Sprague in 1912 in Harrison and he died February 20, 1966.  She and Percy Briggs were married September 27, 1967.  Mrs. Briggs was a correspondent for The Record for the past 8 years and for the Clare County Cleaver for 20
years.
Surviving are her husband, Percy; 5 sons, Leroy and Russell Sprague of Harrison, Kenneth of Fenton, Wayne of Midland, and Linus of Mt. Pleasant; 4 daughters, Mrs. Arnold (Grace) Blackledge of Clare, Mrs. Kenneth (Birdie) Kelley of Harrison, Mrs. Arnold (Louise) Crook of
Waldron, and Mrs. Junior (Lola) Ellis of Midland; 1 stepson, Chester A. Briggs of Atlanta, Mich.; 1 brother and 2 sisters; 44 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at Mathews Funeral Home at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Briggs officiating, and burial was in Butman Cemetery.

SARAH ALICE BRIGGS (1898 – 08 JULY 1911)

 

Sarah Alice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Briggs, died at their home in Butman, July 8, 1911, aged 13 years, 6 months and 24 days, of typhoid fever. Funeral took place at Butman schoolhouse, Tuesday at 1 a.m., Rev. L. V. Soldan officiating.  Interment in Butman.  The many
friends of the family sincerely sympathize with them in their sorrow.

   Mrs. Lillie L. Brown, 75, passed away at the home of her son, Ernest Brown in Sherman township on Monday, June 25 after an illness of only two weeks. Lillie Holtsberry was born in Ohio on January 29, 1876 and was married to Wesley Brown in 1893 in Gladwin. She was a resident of Gladwin county for 59 years and a member of the Butman Brethren in Christ church.

   Funeral services took place this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the church, with the Rev. F. K. Starr officiating. Burial was made in the Butman cemetery. Surviving are her husband, Wesley; one son, Ernest of Butman; one daughter, Mrs. Sadie Boakes of Gladwin; one brother, Forest Holtsberry of Mt. Mrs. Aaron Brown, a resident of Sherman township since 1883, died at her home in Sherman. Saturday evening, April 8, 1916. She was another of the faithful pioneers who has witnessed great developments in Gladwin county.

 

Mary Elizabeth Cunningham was born Feb. 10, 1846, at Saltfleet in Ontario, Canada. In her young days she moved with her parents to Port Huron, Michigan. On June 14, 1864, she was united in marriage to Aaron Brown and resided with her husband in Sanilac county until the year 1883, when they removed to Gladwin county, where they made their home ever since. To their union were born 13 children, eight of whom are living---four sons and four daughters.

 

At the age of 18 years she gave her heart to God and for the remainder of her life she has been a faithful follower and worker for her Lord and Master. She leaves to mourn her loss besides a large circle of friends, her husband, eight children, 19 grandchildren and three great grandchilren, a brother, Simeon of Ontario, Can., and a sister, Margaret of Detroit. She ever proved herself a kind wife, a loving mother and a friend to all who knew her.

 

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Penner, Tuesday p.m. at the Free Methodist church in Sherman township, with interment in Butman cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 4-13/1916 Column - 4 Page - 5.

 

WESLEY WILLIAM BROWN (12 APRIL 1872 - 7 MARCH 1954)

 

ILLNESS FATAL TO SAGE PIONEER

 

   Wesley William Brown, 81, passed away on Sunday, March 27, after one year's illness. Funeral services were held this afternoon from the Butman Brethren in Christ church with the Rev. F. K. Starr officiating. Burial was made in the Butman cemetery. Mr. Brown was born in Sanilac county on April 12, 1872, and came to Sherman township 70 years ago with his parents. He was married to Miss Lillie Holtsberry in March, 1893, in Gladwin. She preceded him in death on June 25, 1951.

   Surviving are one son, Ernest, of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Sadie Boakes, of Sherman township; two brothers, Charles and Edison Brown, both of Gould City; three sisters, Mrs. Blythe Pauls of Gilroy, California, Mrs. Charles (Lena) Snover of Butman township, Mrs. Sarah VanValkenberg of Gladwin; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. David G. Bruner, 79, of Gladwin, Michigan died Feb. 20, 2005 at Saginaw Veterans Hospital in Saginaw. He was born Jan. 13, 1926 in Flint to Albert and Edith (Eslick) Bruner. He married the former Ann V. Demary on March 21, 1947 in Gladwin; she preceded him in death in 1991. He married the former Bess Chandler on Oct. 24, 1992. Bruner was a block layer at Vernon Drilling in Big Rapids. He was U.S. Army Veteran, serving during WWII. He lived in Gladwin County most of his life, having previously resided in Hale. He was a member of American Legion Post 171 and V.F.W. Post 7303.

Surviving him are his wife, Bess Bruner of Gladwin; five step children, Kenneth Ferguson of Gladwin, Cynthia Cassidy of Gladwin, Kimberly (Brad) Lewis of Gladwin, Michell (Jim) Malmo of Gladwin, and Thomas Ferguson of Lapeer; eight grandchildren and one Great grandchild; one sister, Marion Bourlier of Gladwin; and two brothers, Daniel Bruner and Delbert Bruner, both of Gladwin. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann, and by his parents.

Funeral services will be held of Friday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with Pastor Clark Shank officiating. Burial will take place at Butman Cemetery in Gladwin. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin.

LONGTIME SHERMAN RESIDENT DIES

 

   Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home for Harrison Sheldon Bullard, 72, of Sherman Township, who died Wednesday after an illness of many years. Elder Willard Pendleton officiated and burial was in Butman Cemetery.

   Born on August 4, 1888, in Millington, he was a veteran of World War I, and came to Gladwin County in 1906 to operated a farm in Sherman Township. His wife, the former Mable Mahan, preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 1960. Survivors include two sons, Gerald Mahan, of Pinconning, and Loren Bullard, of Gladwin; and seven grandchildren. Loren A. Bullard, 64, of 28 14 W. Sugar River Rd., Gladwin, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 24, after a long illness. Born in Gladwin, July 26, 1924, he spent his lifetime here. Mr. Bullard was married to the former Zelma Muma, Nov. 8, 1947, in Gladwin. She preceded him in death Jan. 30, 1987.

   Surviving are 3 sons, Basil, Charles and Rick of Gladwin; one daughter, Vivian Bullard of Gladwin; and 9 grandchildren. A half-brother, Gerald Mahan, preceded him in death. Louise Ellen Butler, 54, of 3680 W. Riley Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday, June 25, in the Midland Hospital Center following a long illness. Born in Nester Township on July 9, 1928, she attended

Eagleson School. Mrs. Butler was a school custodian. The former Louise Kennedy, she was married to William Butler on April 17, 1947, in Bay City. She traveled with her husband in the Air Force, returning to Gladwin in 1965.

 

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Vern (Julie) Corlew of Gladwin and Mrs. Robert (Bekki) McDonald of Midland; one son, William III of Gladwin; her father, Samuel Kennedy of Gladwin; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Bartlett of Neenah, Wise; 2 brothers, Charles of Flint and Robert of Millington; and 4 grandchildren.

William D. (Dub) Butler, 69. of Gladwin, died Wednesday, April 14. 1993, In the Gratiot County

Hospital in Alma after a short Illness. Born in Tulsa, Okla., on April 23. 1923, he moved to Gladwin County in 1968 from Flint. Mr. Butler served in World War II and the Korean War. He was retired from the Air Force. Mr. Butler was a member of the Gladwin County VFW Post 7303, the American Legion and the Nazarene Church. Mr. Butler and the former Louise Kennedy were married April 17, 1947, in Bay City. She preceded him in death in June 1983.

 

Surviving are one son, William III of Gladwin; 2 daughters, Mrs. Vern (Julie) Corlew and Mrs. Robert (Bekki) McDonald of Gladwin; one brother, Stanley of Tulsa, Okla.; and 4 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

 

Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Sisson Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Wells officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Graveside services were by the

ALVA L. CALKINS (25 MAR 1914 – 25 MAY 1997)

 

Reverend Alva L. Calkins, 83, of Gladwin, died Sunday, May 25, 1997 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Gladwin. Born March 25, 1914 in Kalkaska County to Frank and Christine Springer Calkins, he served 38 years in the ministry, including nine years at the Hockaday Free Methodist Church. He retired in 1980 and moved back to Gladwin from Gladstone.

 

Alva married Hazel Thompson, Aug. 27, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Evadeen and husband LeRoy Powell of Gaines and Karen and husband Roger Funk of Hillman; two sons, Rev. Lyle and wife Lenora of Otisville, and Wayne and wife Susan of Alpena; two brothers, Ralph of Lansing and Ernest of Haslett; two sisters, Leota Morales of Puerto Rico and Geneva Calkins of Lansing; nine grandchildren. He was preceded in  death by two sisters and one brother.

 

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Gladwin Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Marshall officiating, burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Sisson Funeral Home. Gladwin County Record dated 5-28/1997 Column – 3 Page – 2.

 

HAZEL D. (THOMPSON) CALKINS (3 NOV 1918 – 25 OCT 2007)

 

Hazel D. Calkins, 88, of Hillman formerly of Gladwin, passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 at her home. She was born Nov. 3, 1918 in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania to Glenn and Pearl (Morey) Thompson. Hazel married Alva Calkins on Aug. 27, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. Alva passed away May 25, 1997.

 

Hazel was a minister’s wife at 11 churches in Michigan covering a span of 38 years. She served in various capacities in those churches as a partner in ministry with her husband, Alva. She was a member of the Hillman Free Methodist Church. The couple retired to Gladwin in 1980 and she moved to Hillman in 1999.

 

Surviving are two sons, Lyle (Lenora) Calkins of Flushing and Wayne (Susan) Calkins of Ossineke, Michigan; two daughters, Evadeen (Leroy) Powell of Gaines and Karen (Roger) Funk of Hillman; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Hazel is predeceased by two half sisters, Dorothy and Arline, and one brother, Howard.

 

Services were held Monday, Oct. 29, 2007 at the Hillman Free Methodist Church. Rev. Douglas McGeorge and Rev. Burton Kincaid officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Einer Christensen, 81, of Gladwin, died Saturday, Jan. 16, in Bay Medical Center after a long illness. Born on July 29,1906, he came to Gladwin County in 1970. Mr. Christensen was a self-employed pattern maker and a member of the Houghton Lake Elks Club. He was married to the former Mary Kleen and she preceded him in death.

 

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Jane Christensen of Gladwin; 2 sons, Leroy of Texas and James of Grand Rapids; 2 sisters; 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Donald Clements, 62, of Meredith, died Sunday, Aug. 31, at his home. He was born June 29, 1924, in Wisconsin. Mr. Clements was retired from the Chicago North-western Railroad. Libbie A. Cook, 48, of 1759 Oberlin Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, Dec. 15, in Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, after a long illness. Born in Gladwin County Sept. 11, 1937, she had spent most of her life here. She was a member of the Sheriff's Posse and Marine Patrol.

The former Libbie Hilts, she is survived by her husband Lorenzo; her mother, Isabelle Hilts; 3 sons, Stephen of Gladwin, Kriston, at home and James of Flint; one daughter, Kelly Lofquist of Grand Rapids; 6 foster children, David Simons of Flint, Barry Simons of Washington, Floyd Simons of Germany, Tammy and Freddy Shelly of Texas and Arnold Hilts of Gladwin; one brother, Stephen of Oak Park; 2 sisters, Lenora Jackson of Texas and Lorena Hayward of Gladwin; a step sister, Diane Hilts; one step-brother, Ellis Hilts Jr. of Cadillac; and 4
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Ellis Hilts, a daughter, Terry and 2 half-brothers.

   Mrs. Nellie E. Corlew, 60, of Sherman Township, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long illness. Born in Kankakee, Ill., on May 9, 1910, she had resided in Gladwin County since 1931. Mrs. Corlew was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. She taught at the Clement School in 1930 and the Eagleson School in Roscommon County in 1957-58. The former Nellie Combs, she was married to Julius Corlew on May 30, 1931, in Gladwin.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Hannah Myers, of West Branch; eight sons, Wayne, Lester, Kenneth, John and Merrill, of Mt. Morris, George of Gladwin, Dale of Standish and Vern at home; one daughter, Mrs. Anna Smith of Clio; one brother, Robert Combs of West Branch; one sister, Mrs. Marion Link, of Ada, Ohio; and 26 grandchildren.

   Rites will be held Friday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. from the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Allen and the Rev. Melvin Stauffer will officiate and burial will be in the Butman Cemetery. Shirley M. Corlew, 78, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 in West Branch following a lingering illness. She was born in Detroit on March 1, 1925 to the late Harry and Linda (Flynn) Hager. She married John Corlew on Oct. 10, 1943 in Flint, and they have resided in Gladwin for the past 27 years. She was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church.

Surviving besides her husband, John, are two daughters: Lela J. (Charles) Combs of West Branch and Linda A. (Fredic) Redfield of Millington; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Ruth (Henry) Klassen of Gladwin, Beverly (Wayne) Peters of Florida and Bonnie Smith of Flint. One granddaughter, Bethany Jean Redfield; one sister, Jean Corlew; and one brother, Robert Hager, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at the Gladwin Free Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Hortop presiding and with burial in Butman Township Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Sisson Funeral on Monday. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

YULAH ARLENE (FISER) CORLEW (2 JULY 1928 - 25 MARCH 2004)

 

Arlene Corlew, age 75, of Mt. Morris died March 25 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland. She was born July 2, 1928 in Flint to Milt and Pearl (Clark) Fiser. She was a homemaker and lived in Gladwin County until moving to Genesee County in 1948. She was married on July 30, 1945 in Gladwin to Archie Corlew.

 

Surviving are her husband, Archie Corlew of Mt. Morris; sons Ed (Jan) Corlew of Gladwin, Denny (Marianne) Corlew of Mt. Morris, Jerry (Ila) Corlew of Mt. Morris, and Glenn (Louise) Corlew of Gladwin; daughter Brenda (Dale) Allen of Millington; 13 grandchildren and nine Great-grandchildren; and sisters Margaret Fries and Marlynn Clore. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Bud; and sisters, Geraldine Sheets and Betty Muma.

 

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin. Pastor Phil Hortop officiated. Burial took place at Butman Cemetery in Gladwin.

 

HELEN M. (CLAYTON) CRIPPS (25 JUNE 1921 - 7 FEB 1975)

 

Mrs. Helen M. Cripps, 53, of Gladwin, died Friday, Feb. 7, in the Clare Nursing Home after an illness of five years. Born in West Branch on June 25, 1921, she was a member of the Hockaday Free Methodist Church. The former Helen Clayton, she was married to Ronald Cripps, Sr. on Oct. 21, 1939, in Gladwin.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, Ronald Jr. of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Diane McKinney of North Carolina; six brothers, Carl, Gordon and Paul of Gladwin, James and Russell of West Branch and William of Owosso; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Wasalaski and Mrs. Margaret Youngs of Gladwin and Mrs. Doris Coleman of Flint; and two grandchildren.

ARCHIE NELSON DELAURIER (14 APRIL 1918 - 8 OCT 2005)

 

Archie Nelson DeLaurier, 87, of Lakeland died of kidney failure on Oct. 8, 2005 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Roscommon on April 14, 1918 and came to Lakeland from Gladwin last year. He was a factory worker for General Motors and a member of the United Auto Workers. He was a Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a Protestant.

   Mr. DeLaurier is survived by his wife, Margaret Mae DeLaurier; daughter, Darlene Harris of Lakeland; sons, Gary DeLaurier and David DeLaurier, both of Gladwin; and seven grandchildren and six Great grandchildren. Memorial services were held at Grace Church, 2320 Sleepy Hill Road, in Lakeland. Burial was in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin, with an Honor Guard service at the site Thursday, Nov. 3. KILLED IN GERMANY

 

   PFC. HARRY S. DICKERSON, son of Mrs. Mary Jane Cook, of Nester township, Roscommon county, was killed in action in Germany on October 9th, according to word received last week by his mother. Pfc. Dickerson had been previously wounded in action in France on June 30th and was able to go back into action on the front lines on August 23rd. He was inducted into the army on February 11, 1942, and had been overseas for several months. Gladwin County Record dated 11-15/1944

BODY OF COUNTY VETERAN RETURNED HERE MONDAY

 

   Services for the first Gladwin county veteran to be brought home from his grave overseas was to be held on Friday afternoon, November 28 at two o'clock. Pfc. Harry S. Dickerson, son of Mary Jane Good, of Nester township, was killed in action October 9, 1944, in Germany. He was born in Livingston county on June 11, 1918 and prior to his induction was employed as a farmhand in the county.

   Surviving are his mother; two brothers, George Dickerson, of Howell, Elmer Dickerson of Flint; three sisters, Mrs. Lovina London? of Big Rapids, Mrs. Dan Easlick and Mrs. Harold Ostrander of Gladwin; three half-brothers, Lorenzo, Grover and Rodger Co? at home; two half-sisters, Margaret and Janet Cook at home.

   The body of Pfc. Dickerson arrived in New York last month along with others shipped form Europe. It was brought to the Hall Funeral Home, where it will lie in state until the time of the funeral on Friday afternoon. The Rev. Frederick Starr from the Butman Church of the Brethren will officiate and services will be under the auspices of the military organizations in the county. Burial will be in the Butman cemetery. BONDALE "BOB" DINKENS (11 AUG 1930 - 4 MARCH 2000)

Bondale "Bob" Dinkens, 69, of Harleton, Texas, died Saturday, March 4, 2000 at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas after a short illness. Born Aug. 11, 1930 in Hornersville, Mo., he lived in Gladwin County since 1969 and previously lived in Flint. Bondale married Etta Mae Brinsfield, April 29, 1950 in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death in 1995. He was owner/operator of Bob Dinkens & Son Excavating in Gladwin.

Surviving are two sons, J.R. and wife Sherry, and Robert, all of Gladwin; two daughters, Tammy Dinkens of Gladwin and Mary and husband Kenneth Burns of Marshall, Texas; one brother, James of Skid Way Lake; three half brothers, Richard, Kenneth, and Donald Dinkens; one half sister, Margie Kay Payne; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian and Lillian Dinkens.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. Burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery in Gladwin. Visitation will be at Hall Funeral Home, today (Wednesday), noon until 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to be used according to the family.

GLENN EARL ENTREKIN (1 APRIL 1893 - 15 NOV 1958)

 

GLENN ENTREKIN DIES ON HUNTING TRIP

 

   Glenn Earl Entrekin, 65, a resident of Gladwin County for most of his life, died suddenly Saturday morning from a heart attack suffered three miles north of Gladwin. He was driving north on M-18 for the opening of deer hunting when stricken.

   He was born on April 1, 1893 in Breckenridge. Mr. Entrekin was retired from the Dow Chemical Co. plant in Midland a few months ago. He had also spent 16 years with the Conservation department. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Entrekin was a member of the VFW post in Gladwin and of the World War I Veterans Clare-Isabella Barracks at Clare. He was married to the former Miss Laura Foote, in Washington D. C., on Nov. 2, 1928.

   Survivors include his wife, Laura; one daughter Mrs. Eva Letson, of Gladwin; one grandson; three brothers, Velma and Carl, of Flint and Owen, of Gladwin; and one sister Miss Iva Entrekin, of Gladwin. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Alfred W. Saulsbury officiating. Burial was in Butman cemetery.    Mrs. Grace E. Entrekin, 64, of Nester Township, died Monday, Aug. 31, in the Tolfree Memorial Hospital, West Branch after a long illness. Born in Gladwin County on Nov. 18, 1905, she moved to Nester Township in 1925. The former Grace Schuler, she was married to Owen Entrekin on Jan. 1, 1925, in Gladwin. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1964.

   Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Edna Blake and Mrs. Iva C. Metzler, of Gladwin and Mrs. Leonora Jergason, of Lansing; two sons, Donald, of Fenton and George of Flint; five brothers, Clarence, Milford and Lester, of Gladwin, Delmer, of Northville and Ray, of Farmington; one sister, Mrs. Ann David, of Gladwin; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

   Owen H. Entrekin, 65, of 5951 Sargent Road, Nester Township, died suddenly Friday, March 27, at his home of a heart attack. A farmer, who had spent his life around Gladwin and Roscommon, he was born March 23, 1899 in Nester Township. he was married to the former Grace Schuler on January 1, 1925 in Gladwin.

   Surviving are his wife, Grace; two sons, Donald of Fenton, and George, of Flint; three daughters, Mrs. Edna Blake, Gladwin, Mrs. Leonora Vergason, Lansing, and Mrs. Iva C. Metzler, of Napoleon, Ohio; one brother, Carl, of Flint.

Kenneth W. Evans, 67, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at his residence following a brief illness. Born Dec. 29, 1933 in Saginaw, he was the son of the late Melvin and Eva (Goddard) Evans. He moved to Gladwin in 1975. He retired from General Motors in 1981 and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Faye M. Fischer, 57, of 523 N. Antler, Gladwin, died Sunday, May 31, following a long illness. Born in Gladwin on December 20, 1923, she had spent her lifetime here. She was a member of the Gladwin United Methodist Church. The former Faye Bennett, she was married to Carl Fischer on June 5, 1943.

   Surviving are her husband, one son, Melvin of Gladwin; 4 daughters, Mrs. Randy (Carol) Ivey and Mrs. Kenneth (Barbara) Uhl of Beaverton, Mrs. Douglas (Sally) Cameron and Mrs. Ralph (Mary) Richmond of Gladwin; her mother, Mrs. Ethel Bennett of Gladwin; 4 brothers, Harvey and James of Flint, Delmer of Midland and Charles of Chicago. Ill.; 3 sisters, Mrs. Ivabelle Wineman and Mrs. Rose Wyrick of Gladwin and Mrs. Dorothy Eyre of Jackson; and 10 grandchildren.

James A. Flaishans, 56, of Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997 at home. Born Oct. 26, 1941 om Dearborn, he had been employed by Bridgeford Foods, Chicago, Ill. James married the former Jeanne Bartholomew, Aug. 28, 1981 in Gladwin. He was a member of American Legion Post 171.

 

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Monica and husband Raymond Kouza of Taylor, Shelly and husband Jeff Kiss of E. Leroy, and Renee Flaishans of Gladwin; one son, Michael and wife Lori of Dearborn; three sisters, Nancy Clarke of Romulus, JoAnne Fisher, and Jeannie Deplanche, both of Lake Placid, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

 

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel with Rev. James Kent officiating. Gladwin County Record dated 12-10/1997.

Sylvia Belle Fletcher, 66, formerly of 714 Pine Street in Otisville but now of Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, April 22, in Beaverton. Funeral services were held April 26, at 1:30 p.m., at the Mathew Funeral Home in Gladwin with the Rev. Charles Allen officiating. Burial was made in Butman Cemetery. The former Sylvia Corlew was born in Gladwin, September 25, 1904. She was married to Robert M. Fletcher, September 25, 1924, in Flint. She was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church.

   She is survived by her husband Robert; one son, Robert D. of Flint, one daughter Mrs. Doris Tudor of Gladwin; five brothers, Julius and Max Corlew of Gladwin, John Corlew of Genesee, Robert and Archie Corlew of Mt. Morris; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Karslake of Vanderbilt, Mrs. Bertha Merry of Gaylord, Mrs. Zola Jay of National City, Michigan and Mrs. Adelia Reed of Sterling. ADOLPH G. FRIESEN (26 MARCH 1916 - 25 NOV 1993)

 

Adolph G. (Rudy) Friesen. 77, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1993. in Tendercare Nursing Home, Midland, after a short illness. Born in Canada on March 26, 1916, he had spent most of his life in Gladwin County. He attended the Hockaday Free Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Friesen and the former Evelyn Breault Yeager were married Aug. 21. 1965, in Hockaday.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 4 step-daughters, Mrs. Jim (Carol) Walters and Mrs. Bob (Marian) Fassett of Beaverton, Mrs, Marvin (Phyllis) Myers of Swartz Creek and Mrs, Jim

(Karen) Gray of Gladwin; of Gladwin; 5 brothers, Paul of Detroit, William of Higgins Lake, Ewald of Birmingham, Henry of Grand Rapids and John of Troy; 3 sisters, Agatha Johnson of Portland, Ore., Jeanette Willis and Ruth Pultz of Lansing; 12 step-grandchildren and 14 great stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Robert Fryar, 65, of Bloomfield Hills and 4740 Lancer Circle, Sugar Springs, died Monday, May 18, in Hospice of Southeastern Michigan after a long illness. Born in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 10, 1921, he moved to Oakland County 6 years ago from Wharton, N.J. Mr. Fryar was a retired nuclear physicist for Kerr-McGee Corp. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, VFW and Sugar Springs Men's Golf Association. Mr. Fryar was married to the former Carolyn Reed March 22, 1971, in Las Vegas, Nev.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Todd Phillips of Haddonfield, N.J.; one daughter, Alisa Lockwood of Yakima, Wash.; 2 sisters, Vesta High and Gladys Vanderford of Midford, Ore.; and 2 grandchildren.

Harold Gardner, 70, of Roscommon County, died Wednesday, March 7, 1990, in Ann Arbor, after

a long illness. Born in Detroit, Jan. 17, 1920, he moved to the area in 1974 from Detroit. Mr. Gardner was a veteran of World War II and was a packer with General Motors Corp. He joined the Nester Township Fire Department in 1978. Surviving is a sister-in-law, Mary Gardner of Gladwin; and one nephew.

Marilyn Jeanne Goheen, 61, of Lakeland, Fla. and formerly of Gladwin, died suddenly Sunday, May 3, 1992, in Lakeland Regional Hospital. She was born in Gladwin on May 12, 1930. The former Marilyn Reithel, she was married to Richard Goheen in New Rochelle, N.Y., Sept. 5, 1950.

Loretta V. Good. 58, of 3202 W. Grass Lake Rd. Gladwin, died suddenly at her home Friday, Feb. 11, 1994. She was born In Detroit on Oct. 13, 19350 and had spent most of her life in Gladwin

County, Mrs. Good worked at the First America Bank, Gladwin for 24 years and was the assistant branch manager when she retired in January 1993.

 

The former Loretta Klassen, she was married to Rex Good Sr.  on May 30, 1953, In Aiken, S.C.

Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sons. Rex Jr. of Midland and David of Gladwin;  her mother, Adelia Klassen of Gladwin; one sister, Debra DeHart of Tillamook, Ore.; and 3 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Jo on March 25, 1977.

 

Services were held Monday at noon from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Robert Marshall officiated and burial was in the Butman Township Cemetery. Memorials may

REX O. GOOD, SR (24 MARCH 1930 - 21 JUNE 2005)

 

Rex O. Good, Sr., 75, of Gladwin died June 21, 2005 at home after a short illness. He was born in Nester Township on April 24, 193o to Wilbur and Bessie (Blake) Good. He married Loretta Klassen on May 30, 1953; she passed away in 1994. He married Arita Hager in Houghton Lake on April 22, 1995. Mr. Good lived in Gladwin County all his life. He was the owner/operator of Rex Good Excavating in Gladwin, retiring in 1990.

 

Rex was on the Meredith Pool League, a lifetime member of the Gladwin V.F.W. 11256, and a member of Houghton Lake Eagle Aerie 3201 and Gladwin Moose Lodge 287. He was Gladwin County Road Commissioner, and also served on the Gladwin County Sheriff Department. He was an MP in the Korean Conflict while in the army.

 

Surviving him are his wife, Arita Good of Gladwin; two sons, Rex O., (Judy) Good of Midland and David (Debbie) Good of Gladwin; four grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and 16 Great grandchildren; three step-daughters, Joni Yeager-Knapp (and friend Dave McMullen) of Gladwin, Sue (Bob) Wolschon of Harrison, and Carol (Bob) Harrison of Merritt; one step-son, Jim (Vikki) Yeager of Houghton Lake; and two sisters, Lula Kittle of Hillsdale and Lela Hillier of Gladwin. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Loretta Good; his parents; daughter, Amy; brother, Max Good; and two sisters, Nona Muma and Iva Peterson.

 

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 25 at Gladwin Free Methodist Church with Pastor Phil Hortop. Burial followed at Butman Cemetery in Gladwin. Memorial contributions may be made to Americare Hospice of Grayling.

Clifford E. Haas, 43, of 37 Raymond Dr., Coldwater, died Friday, April 7, in the Battle Creek Community Hospital form injuries received in an industrial accident, 12 days earlier. Born in Pontiac on August 12, 1934, he came to Gladwin County in 1968 and moved to Coldwater in 1977. Mr. Haas was a welder for Southwind Motor Homes in Quincy.

   Surviving are 6 children, Melinda and Clifford of Clarkston, Tamara, Timothy, Thomas and Shanean of Coldwater; his mother, Mrs. Dolores Haas of Hadley; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Patricia Muma and Mrs. Marie Bowick of Gladwin and Mrs. Carole Glanville of Hadley.

Harry Hager, 83, of 5549 Butman Township, died Monday at Midland Hospital following a short illness. Born July 20, 1893, in Marlette, he was a WW I veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in Russia, and worked during his life as a plasterer, construction worker and farmer. He was a member of WW I Barracks 3421.

 

Mr. Hager moved to Gladwin County in December 1931 from Detroit where he married the former Linda May Flynn on February 2, 1918. She preceded him in death in May 1976.

 

Surviving are a son, Robert H. Hager Sr. of Gladwin, and 5 daughters. They are Mrs. Henry (Ruth) Klassen and Mrs. Jean Corlew, both of Gladwin; Mrs. John (Shirley) Corlew of Genesee; and Mrs. Wayne (Beverly) Peters and Mrs. Ben (Bonnie) Smith, both of Flint. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 53 great grandchilren and 5 great great grandchildren.

John H. Hager, 58, of 3212 Hockaday Rd., died Monday, July 1, at Veterans Administration Hospital, Saginaw. He had been in failing health for the past five years.

 

Born in Butman Township, September 20, 1915, he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He served in the United States army in World War II from February 14, 1941, to September 29, 1945, in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe.

 

Mr. Hager and the former Mary E. McQuestion were married in Gladwin, March 6, 1959. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Gladwin County Road Commission until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

 

Surviving are his wife, Mary E., a step-daughter, Mary Ann Meiter, at home; a son, Duane Fischer of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Carrie Yeager of Gladwin, and Mrs. Alice Wright of Saginaw; 2 brothers, Hugh Hager of Flint, and Vern Hager of Daytona Beach, Fla.; 6 grandchildren.

Marion M. Harger, 79, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998 at the Tendercare Nursing Home in Clare. Born Sept. 26, 1918 in Lupton, she was the daughter of Homer and Rose Thick Hemstreet. Marion married Robert Harger Sr., Nov. 30, 1953 in Flint. He preceded her in death May 7, 1994. They came to Gladwin in 1954 and farmed and she also helped her husband as sexton of Butman Township Cemetery for 26 years.

   Surviving are two sons, Elton Apsey, and Robert Jr., both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five daughters, June Buck and Barbara VanBuren, both of Bay City, Elaine Morse of Holt, Earla Bailey of Holland, and Sheryl Holm of Gladwin; 29 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Helen I. Hamacher, 42, of 5024 Dundas Rd., Beaverton, died Monday, April 10. at Flint Osteopathic Hospital, following a three months illness. The former Miss Helen Shorts was born in Gladwin June 9, 1929, and had made her home in the county for most of her life. She and Otis Hamacher were married in Flint January 24, 1948. Mrs. Hamacher was a member of the Beaverton Re-Organized Latter Day Saints Church.

 

Surviving are her husband, Otis; four daughters, Mrs. Janice Wiidey of Flint, Mrs. Charlotte Woodruff of Beaverton, Misses Debra and Marcia Hamacher, at home; her mother, Mrs. Elva

Wright of Beaverton; a brother, Melvin Shorts of Beaverton; three sisters, Mrs. Ruby Sampson of

Gladwin, Mrs. Maxine Mahan of Arkansas; and Mrs. Marylin Foote of Clare; and three grandchildren.

WAYNE HAMILTON (MARCH 1913 – 24 JAN 1937)

 

TWO TEACHERS DIED IN CRASH

 

MARGARET CLARK, WAYNE HAMILTON KILLED IN SATURDAY MISHAP

 

Two Gladwin county rural teachers were killed and three others were injured Saturday when the car in which they were riding crashed into a tree near Elm Grove, Clare county.

 

Killed in the accident were:

 

Mrs. Margaret Clark, teacher at Smith Creek school in Sage township.

Wayne Hamilton, teacher at the Leaton school in Butman township.

 

Those injured were:

 

Miss Grace Ritchie, teacher at the Eggleston school in Roscommon county, who suffered a broken nose, a skull fracture, and lacerations. Her condition was reported satisfactory by physicians at the Clare hospital Tuesday night.

Dale Reigle, teacher at the Hockaday school in Butman township, who suffered a fractured arm and bruises.

Walter Hawkins, teacher at the Littletown school in Gladwin township, who escaped with minor cuts and bruises.

 

The five teachers were returning from Saturday classes at the Central State Teachers College in Mount Pleasant when the accident occurred. Mrs. Clark, who was driving the car, lost control when it struck a rut on the icy road between Clare and Beaverton and careened over the ditch and into a tree.

 

Mrs. Clark, Miss Ritchie and Wayne Hamilton were taken to the Clare hospital by passerby where Wayne died shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday. Mrs. Clark died two hours later. Dale Reigle was brought to Gladwin for treatment.

 

Funeral services were held for Wayne Hamilton at the Brethren in Christ church in Butman township Tuesday afternoon, January 26, at 2 o’clock, with Rev. H. P. Heisey officiating. Burial was at Butman cemetery. He was born in March, 1913, in Butman township. In 1931 he graduated from the Gladwin city county normal in 1932. Since his graduation he has taught his home school, known as the Leaton-ville school.

 

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Hamilton, of Butman township, one sister, Mrs. William (Helen) Lockard, and two brothers, Carleton and Howard, all of Flint.

Burial services will be held at the Free Methodist church this afternoon (Wednesday) at 2:30 for Mrs. Clark conducted by Rev. C. H. Woods. Burial will be at Highland cemetery. Margaret Jane Stephenson was born February 18, 1899 in Midland county and came to Gladwin county with her parents in her early childhood. In 1920 she graduated from the Gladwin city high schools and Gladwin county normal. She afterwards attended the Central State Teachers College at Mt. Pleasant and was granted a life certificate. She has taught in Gladwin county schools for a number of years.

 

In April, 1921, she married Herbert Clark, and since that time has made her home either at Beaverton or Gladwin. She was a member of the Beaverton chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekah lodge at Beaverton, and the Gladwin Literary club.

 

Surviving are her husband, Herbert Clark; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stephenson of Midland; five sisters, Mrs. Cecil Conklin of Gladwin, Mrs. Beulah Hodge of Midland, Mrs. Lottie Babcock of Flint, Mrs. Irene Allen of Gladwin and Mrs. Maxine Sprague of Flint; two brothers, Wilbur Stephenson and Richard Stephenson, Jr., of Midland. Choua Hang, 58, of Gladwin, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Born Sept. 10, 1939 in Xiengkhouang, Laos, he has been in Gladwin the past three years, working at the Chee Peng Chinese Restaurant.

 

Choua received the "Defenders of Freedom Citation," from Congress, for having supported

American Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.

 

Surviving are his wife, Shoua; three sons, Bee, Kou, Yer, all of Gladwin; two daughters, Youa

and Jamie, both of Gladwin; one brother, Chong of Gladwin; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

   The body of Roy E. Harvey was brought to Gladwin May 4 from Detroit and taken to the home of his mother, Mrs. Emmaline Harvey, in Butman township. The young man who was working on a boat in the Detroit river, being found under the boat Monday morning, May 2. He was last seen by the boat crew at supper about nine o'clock the evening before, and had not been missed up to that time.

   Seaman Roy E. Harvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Harvey, was born near Paulding, Ohio, Jan. 6, 1892, and at his death was aged 29 years, 3 months and 26 days. He came to Gladwin county when 18 years of age, remaining here until his enlistment in the U.S. navy May 14, 1918.

   He was taken to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Illinois, remaining there until being transferred to Pensacola, Florida. He was released from active duty May 22, 1919, his term of enlistment, however, not expiring until May 14, 1922, being subject to the call to service at any time during that period. He was a loving and obedient son, and brother. As the oldest son, he has taken a father's place to the younger children, his father having died February 20, 1909.

   He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Emmaline Harvey, three brothers, James, Arthur, Orin and three sisters, Ethel, and Mary of Gladwin, and Mrs. Harvey Doyle of Oakwood, O., also an aunt, Miss Mary C. Robb, his father's only sister, who resides with the family, besides many other relatives and a large circle of friends. Hazel Hyde, 91, of Gladwin passed away Aug. 29, 2003 at the Gladwin Living Centre. She was born May 1, 1912 in Park Rapids, Minnesota to Herman and Adeline Senske Sitz. Hazel married Ray Hyde on May 24, 1943 in Pontiac. Ray passed away Dec. 23, 1973. She lived in this area most of her life and was a member of the Hockaday Community Church.

Surviving are son-in-law Roland and Dawn Thomas of Gladwin; daughters-in-law Bonnie Hyde of Flint and Doris Hyde of West Branch; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Hazel was preceded in death by two daughters, Karolyn Thomas and Karen Hyde; two sons, Rollis and Cecil Hyde; one grandchild; nine brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sisson Funeral Home. Pastor James Lowman officiated and burial was in Butman Township Cemetery.

KAREN HYDE (12 APRIL 1944 - 1 APRIL 2003)

Karen Hyde, age 58, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma following a brief illness. She was born in Pontiac on April 12, 1944 to Raymond and Hazel (Sitz) Hyde. She moved to Gladwin in July 2002 from Skokie, Ill.

She is survived by her mother, Hazel Hyde of Gladwin; brother-in-law Roland Thomas of Gladwin; sisters-in-law Doris Hyde of West Branch and Bonnie Hyde of Flint; along with several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Raymond, in 1973; brothers Rollis and Cecil Hyde; and sister Karolyn Thomas.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2003 at the Sisson Funeral Home with Pastor James Lowman presiding, with burial in Butman Township Cemetery. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

   Ray W. Hyde, 68, of Hockaday, died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 22, at his home. He had been in failing health the past 10 years. Born in Attica on Aug. 25, 1902, he came to Gladwin County 23 years ago from Oxford. Mr. Hyde was a trustee of the Butman Township Board and one the Muscular Dystrophy committee. He was a carpenter. He was married to the former Hazel Sitz on May 28, 1943, in Hadley.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Cecil, of West Branch, Philip, of Nashville, Ind., and Rollis, of Flint; two daughters, Mrs. Karen Jones, of Chicago ad Karolyn, of Gladwin; and six grandchildren. Rites were held Saturday, Dec. 26, at 10:30 a.m. from the Miner-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Helena Richmond and the Rev. Alva Calkins officiated and burial was in the Butman Cemetery. Emily Jones, 80, of 3077 S. M-18, Beaverton, died Thursday, Oct. 16, at her home after a long illness. Born in Arthur Township, Clare County, Dec. 23, 1905, she had lived in Gladwin County since 1942. She was a retired school cook. The former Emily Fanslau, she was married in 1925 to Romeual Jones in Parma, Ohio. He preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1980.

   Surviving are one son, James of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Lewis (Lois) Hock of Beaverton; one sister, Mrs. Martha Brennan of Florida; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters.

Maude G. Kennedy, 85, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. Born March 4, 1914 in Nester Twp., Roscommon County, she was the daughter of John and Cara Good Smith. Maude married Joseph Kennedy, July 4, 1935 in Nester Twp. He preceded her in death Dec. 9, 1977. She attended Eagleston School in Nester Twp. and was a lifetime resident there. She was also a member of the R.L.D.S. Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Rosalyn and husband Robert Shears of Clio; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Raymond; one daughter, Moore; two brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sisson Funeral Home with Donn Pendleton officiating. Burial was in Butman Township Cemetery.

   KENNEDY.---At Nolan, March 9, of consumption, Phebe Ann, wife of Peter Kennedy, died, aged 47 years, 1 month and 19 days. Funeral services were held Saturday, conducted by Rev. E. A. Schultz, and interment took place in Butman cemetery. Mrs. Kennedy was born in Ohio, and came to Michigan with her family and settled near Nolan three years ago. Samuel'' Kennedy of Butman township died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1942 at the Samaritan Hospital

in Bay City. Mr. Kennedy was born in Ohio January 29, 1883 and come to Michigan in the fall of 1901. September 3, 1902 he married Millie Mansfield and settled on a farm in Nester township, Roscommon County, where they remained until December 1940 when they moved to the Bliss Ranch in Butman township of Gladwin county.

 

Mr. Kennedy has held various township offices, including township supervisor, clerk, treasurer,

Justice of Peace and school treasurer.

 

He leaves to mourn besides his wife, two sons, Samuel of Nester township, Roscommon county, Joe at home, two daughters, Mrs. Nicholas Green of Cadillac and Mrs. George Clark of Flint, one

brother, Charles of Boyne City and a sister, Mrs. Marie Huff of Gaylord, 15 grand-children besides

other relatives and friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the home Friday, February 6, with Elder George White of the L. D. S. Church officiating. Interment was in Butman cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 2-11/1942 Column – 2 Page – 1.

Robert M. Kitzman Sr., 69, of Gladwin, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the MidMichigan Medical Center, Gladwin. He was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Topaz, to Alexander and Grace Morian Kitzman. Bob married Leatrice (Joy) Rulapaugh on Sept. 4, 1971, in Midland. He
retired from The Dow Chemical Co., in the mid 80's and has lived in Gladwin County the past 20 years. Bob was a volunteer fireman for Clement Township, and a member of the Gladwin Sheriff's Posse and charter member of the Sanford Eagles and he was very active with the
Gladwin Little League, player, manager and a charter member of the Christ The King Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Joy; his children Connie and Jack Pyle of Mason, Bonnie and David Battice of Houghton Lake, Bobbie and Jim Patty of Sanford, Tina and Kevin Robinson of Ocals, Fla., Tom Kitzman of Beaverton and Robert M. Kitzman Jr of Gladwin; nine grandchildren,
four great grandchildren, two brothers, Kermit Kitzman of Alpena and Orval Kitzman of West Bloomfield Heights, two sisters Anne and Dell Warner of Livonia and Betty and Howard Yuker of Alpena.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 1999, at the Christ the King Lutheran Church in Gladwin. The Rev. Reeed Schroer will officiate and burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Sission Funeral Home in Gladwin. Memorials may be made to the family or Christ the King Lutheran Church.

HENRY KLASSEN (16 JAN 1913 - 19 APRIL 2005)

Henry Klassen, 92, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, April 19, at Brittany Manor in Midland following a short illness. He was born in Hepburn, Saskatchewan, Canada on Jan. 16, 1913 to Jacob and Katharina (Voth) Klassen. Mr. Klassen moved to Gladwin with his family in 1923 and returned to Gladwin in 1942 after living in Dearborn. On July 4, 1937 he married Ruth Hager in Butman Township. He was the father of six children. Henry was a faithful member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed music and until recently could be found playing music for senior citizens events, nursing homes, and church meetings with good friends Jim Gower and Ted Brown.

Besides his wife Ruth, Henry is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Dale) Beardslee of Spring Arbor, and Carolyn Klassen of Gladwin; two sons, Harold Klassen of Midland and Harvey Klassen of Springport; and 12 grandchildren and 17 Great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Jacob, John, Peter, David and Frank; three sisters, Mary Klassen, Helena Golder and Anna Applegate; two sons, Robert and David; and one Great grandson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. Burial was at the Butman Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gladwin Free Methodist Church. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nursing staff at Britanny Manor for their loving care during Henry’s final days.

LENORE (BLAKESLEE) KLASSEN (7 JUNE 1954 - 25 APRIL 2004)

Lenore Klassen, Lenore Klassen, age 49 of Gladwin went to heaven on April 25, 2004 after a brief battle with cancer. She was born June 7, 1954 in Corry, Pennsylvania to Lyle and Margaret Crowell Blakeslee. Lenore married Gary Klassen on Oct. 6, 1973 in Corry, Penn. She has lived in Gladwin County since then. Lenore was employed by Gladwin Hospital for 28 years as an LPN, RN and discharge planner, and in utilization review. She attended Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church where she has been very active in children’s ministry for many years.

Surviving are her husband Gary, one son, Erick (Michelle) Klassen of Midland; one daughter, Heidi Klassen, a student at MSU; three sisters, Lura (Tom) Shuttlesworth of Leesburg, Flor., Leah and Frank Klassen of Eaton Rapids, and Beth and Paul Klassen of Alger; her mother, Margaret Blakeslee of Eaton Rapids; and ten nieces, four nephews, four great nieces and four great nephews. She was predeceased by her father Lyle Blakeslee, one niece and one nephew.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28 at the Sisson Funeral Home with pastor Brian Thomspon officiating. Burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Children’s Ministry at Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church.

MAX EDWARD KLEMACH (14 SEP 1919 - 3 DEC 1990)

 

Max E. Klemach, 71, of 2560 N. Bard Rd., Gladwin, died Monday, Dec. 3, 1990, in the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Midland, after a short illness. Born in Saginaw, Sept. 14, 1910, he moved to Gladwin County in 1979. Mr. Klemach was a machinist for Chevrolet Manufacturing in Saginaw for 30 years and retired June 1, 1979. He was a member of the UAW Local 467 Saginaw, the Bridgeport Masonic Lodge 257, the Elf Khurafeh Shrine of Saginaw and the Consistory in Bay City.

 

Mr. Klemach and the former Betty Walters were married Sept. 18, 1943, in Georgia. She preceded him in death Aug. 1, 1980. Surviving is a brother, Daniel Pahl of Gladwin; and a sister, Connie Kaye of Flint.

 

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev.

John Kyros, 70, of 3408 Clendening Rd., Gladwin, died Monday, Jan. 7, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Racine, Wisc., Feb. 5, 1914, he grew up in Detroit and came to Gladwin County in 1946. He was employed at Gladwin Manufacturing. He was a veteran of World War II and the Gladwin Baptist Church. He and his wife, Ruby, were married March 28, 1942, in Detroit.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by a stepson, Arden Seipke of Gladwin; one brother, George of North Branch; 4 sisters, Katherine Toyeas of Detroit, Mary Pope, Jennie Gartley and Violet Nazarian of Seattle, Wash.; 2 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Ruby M. Kyros, 88, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at the Gladwin Living Centre. Born March 25, 1910 in Gladwin, she was the daughter of Julius and Mary Strange Seipke. Ruby married John Kyros, March 28, 1942 in Detroit. He preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1985. She was a member of the Gladwin Baptist Church.

   Surviving are one son, Arden and wife Shirley Seipke of Gladwin; one brother, Gordon of Detroit; two sisters, Alvina of California, and Esther and husband Arthur Anderson of Gladwin; four great-grandchildren, Chad French, Kelsey and Tonya Anderson, and Shaynee Seipke, all of Gladwin. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Eva, Edith, and Mildred; and one brother, Carl.

William Gray Lane Jr. 8 month old son of William G. and Kathy Sue Lane of Beaverton, died Sunday, March 4th in the Midland Hospital as the result of an auto accident Saturday evening, March 3rd.    He was born June 27, 1972 at Spring, Illinois. Charles M. Major. 74, of 103 Lake View Dr., Gladwin, died Saturday. Feb. 29. 1992. in the Saginaw Veterans Hospital after a long illness. Born in Roscommon, Jan. 16, 1918. he moved to Gladwin County in 1979 from Flint. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the DAV and Local 599. Mr. Major and the former Betty Haight were married July 13, 1946, in Flint.

Claude H. Mallery, 42, of 4700 Round Lake Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, May 7, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Owosso on November 10, 1938, he came to Gladwin County in August 1976 from Chesaning. Mr. Mallery worked at Fisher Body No. 2 and Rogers Construction in Flint, until illness forced his retirement in August 1980. He was a member of the National Guard Army Reserve and the Flint Moose Lodge. Mr. Mallery and the former Peggy Brigance were married November 12, 1960, in Flint.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 daughters, Claudia of Flint, Robin and Carla at home; 2 sons, Bryan and Bradley at home; his mother and step father, Robert and Opal Corlew of Mio; one brother, Ryan of Flint; and one granddaughter.

Shirley A. Manley, 65, of Gladwin, died Friday, June 1, 2001 at her residence following a lingering illness. Born Oct. 19, 1935 in Farrell, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret (Brodick) Weiss. She was a member of the Rebekahs and the FOE 3292 Eagles.

Surviving are four sons, Phillip and Glenn Wade, both of Gladwin, Gerald Wade of Marlette, and Ronald Wade of Ypsilanti; four daughters, Deborah Wheeler of Ypsilanti, Julie Knight, Linda Johnston, and Jackie Watts, all of Gladwin; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, David Weiss of Cleveland, Ohio; and three sisters, Gloria Davis of Detroit, Barbara Rutkowski of Gladwin, and Rosemary Marcil of Monroesville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by Gary Wade; two granddaughters, Kayla and Eliabeth; and two brothers, Fred and Richard Weiss. Services were held Monday at the Sisson Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Roberts officiating. Burial was in Butman Township Cemetery.

Mrs. Bertha M. Mansfield, 84, of 3270 Pratts Lake Rd., Gladwin, died Friday, Feb. 17, in the Gladwin Area Hospital after a long illness. Born in Port Huron, Oct. 15, 1904, she had spent most of her life in Gladwin and Roscommon counties. The former Bertha Hall, she was married to Simeon Mansfield, Aug. 15, 1920, in Gladwin County. He preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1962.    MANSFIELD---Helen Edaline, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Mansfield of Clement township, died very suddenly of indigestion early Wednesday morning, March 29, aged 5 years, 10 months, 17 days. She leaves behind to mourn her early departure her father, mother, one sister and two brothers, besides many friends and relatives. RITES TODAY FOR JOSEPH MANSFIELD

 

   Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at the Brethren in Christ Church Butman, for Joseph P. Mansfield, 82, well-known county resident, who died suddenly at his home in Clement Township Sunday. The Rev. Melvin Stauffer officiated and burial was in Butman Cemetery. Born on April 11, 1882, in Paulding County, Ohio, he was married to the former Annie Brown Dec. 22, 1904, in Butman Township. She preceded him in death on March 11 of this year.

   A Gladwin county resident since 1896, he was a member of the Brethren in Christ Church of Butman. A retired farmer, he had also been a foreman of a CCC camp from 1931 until 1936, a conservation department fire warden, an employee of the state highway department, a former member of the school board and Clement Township justice of the peace.

   Surviving are a son, Russel, of Gladwin; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Hayes, of Flint; a sister, Mrs. Alice Mayfield, of Flint; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Gladwin County Record dated 04-22/1964 Column - 6 Page – 1

 

PETER ISAAC MATTIS (5 OCT 1850 - 19 DEC 1919)

 

Peter Mattis died at his home in Billings township Dec. 19, 1919, after a few weeks illness. He was born at Canden, Ont., Oct. 5, 1850. He was married to Miss Mary Babcock March 2, 1884, and came to this country in April 1892. He lived in the city of Gladwin and in Butman many years before moving to Billings township. He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters; P.W. Mattis of Bridgeport, Mich., Mrs. Levi Ostrander and Mrs. Harry Hamilton, both of Flint; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Henry Babcock of Gladwin, Mrs. Benjamin Hall of Flint, Mrs. Robert Nelson of McBain, Jacob Mattis of Napanee, Ont.

RAYMOND G. MCCLINTIC (9 JULY 1922 - 13 OCT 2001)

 

   Raymond G. McClintic, 79, of Gladwin, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001 at the Gladwin Living Center following a brief illness. Born July 9, 1922 in Perry, he was the son of the late Raymond C. and Clarabelle (Webb) McClintic. Raymond married Helen Gibson, March 23, 1945 in Florida. They moved to Gladwin in 1988 from Ferndale. He was a retired mailman, and attended the First United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

   Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Raymond and wife Betty of Gladwin and Michael and wife Kathy of Ferndale; one daughter, Karen K. Brooks of Coalton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one-son-in-law, Larry Brooks; two brothers, Duane and Jack; and two sisters, Genevieve McClintic and Geneva Granger.

RUSSELL D. MCCUMMINGS (6 MARCH 1942 - 5 JUNE 2005)

Russell D. McCummings, 63, of Gladwin died June 5, 2005 at his home. He was born in River Rouge on March 6, 1942 to Emmett and Florence (Dupuie) McCummings. He married the former Sherley Schuler in Lake City on July 22, 1963. He lived in Gladwin County most of his life and was owner/operator of McCummings Logging. He was also a veteran.

He is survived by his wife Sherley McCummings of Gladwin; two sons, Ron (Lisa) McCummings and Jeff McCummings, both of Gladwin; one daughter, Jodi McCummings of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren, Blake McCummings and Zacheriah McCummings, both of Gladwin; one brother, Robert McCummings of Flint; one sister, Rita Renfore of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Richard and Ronald.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8 at 11 a.m. at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Chad Deerman officiating. Burial will take place at Butman Cemetery in Gladwin. Those wishing to do so may direct memorial contributions to Mid-Michigan Hospice.

MARY (BRETON) MCMILLAN (AUG 1849 – 19 FEB 1922)

Mrs. Archie McMillan died at her home in Butman Feb. 19, aged 72 years. Mary Beaton was born in Cape Breton, Canada, in August 1849, and was married to Archie McMillan in 1892 and came to Butman in Gladwin county to reside. Her husband, two sons, Robert McMillan of Denver, Col., and Archie McMillan of Brookings, S.D., and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Jackson of Detroit, survive.

 

Funeral services were held at the home Feb. 23, by Rev. Roberts of Hockaday, and interment took place in Butman cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 3-2/1922 Column – 5 Page – 5.

 

IVA CAROLINE (ENTREKIN) METZLER (27 JUNE 1940 - 20 AUG 2001)

 

Iva Metzler, 61, of Gladwin, died suddenly Monday, Aug. 20, 2001. Born June 27, 1940 in Nester Township, she was the daughter of Owen and Grace (Schuler) Entrekin. She lived in Roscommon County her whole life.

She was a store clerk for Ace Hardware in Midland.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Debra and Michael Stillwagon of Beaverton, and Pamela Crowl of Gladwin; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Edna Blake of Gladwin, and Leonora and husband Robert Vergason of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, George and Donald Entrekin.

 

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Pastor Harold Owens officiating. Burial will be in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin.

INEZ "NANCY" (BRUNER) THOMAS - MILLS (5 OCT 1940 - 21 MARCH 2003)

 

Inez “Nancy” Mills, 62, of Gladwin went to be with the Lord on March 21, 2003 at home, surrounded by her family, after battling a brief courageous fight with cancer. Nancy was born in Gladwin on Oct. 5, 1940 and has been a long time resident ever since. She was the daughter of the late Dewey and Inez (Molsworth) Bruner. She enjoyed fishing, bowling and spending time with her grandchildren.

 

Surviving is her husband Robert Earl Mills; two children, son and daughter-in-law Keith and Dolores Thomas of El Cajon, California and daughter and son-in-law Angie and Roger Van Cleve of Montrose, Michigan; a special step-son David and his wife Shelley Mills; six grandchildren Caitlin and Haley Thomas, Zachary, Stephanie and Jacob Van Cleve, and Melanie Mills; three step-children; several step-grandchildren; four sisters Fran (Glen) Day and Elpha Murray, both of Gladwin, Florence (Ken) Rhines of Webberville, Michigan, and Joyce Bruner of Edmore, Michigan; two brothers Lawrence (Jeanene) Bruner of Webberville, Michigan and Elmer (Pat) Bruner of Mason, Michigan; many nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, “Mother” Martha Smith and Sharon Risch, both of Gladwin.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Cynthia Kay, sister Vera Grove, and two brothers, Robert and George Bruner. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sisson Funeral Home with Rev. Phillip Hortop of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church officiating, and burial was at Butman Township Cemetery.    Funeral services for Clarence Morrison, 47, were held on Thursday afternoon at the Hall Funeral Home, with Elder B. H. Doty officiating. Burial was in the Butman cemetery. Mr. Morrison was the son of Harold and Anna Morrison, former residents of Butman township, but spent most of his life in and near Detroit. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, World War I, enlisting at the age of 15.

Harold J. Muma, 74, of Gladwin, went to be with his wife, Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000 at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch after a short illness. Born April 30, 1925 in Roscommon County, he was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Harold married Betty J. Fiser, Sept. 23, 1944 in Gladwin. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was a machinist for A. C. Spark Plug in Flint, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the R.L.D.S. Church in Gladwin.

 

Surviving are four sons, Michael, William and wife Diane and Ted and wife Marla, all of Gladwin, and Mark and wife Tracey of Flint; two daughters, Beverly and husband Dennis Bright of Gladwin, and Tonya and husband Kevin Venable of Flint; three brothers, Stanley, Delmar and Aaron, all of Gladwin; two sisters, Vera French and Fredia Kish, both of Gladwin; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry in 1946; four brothers; and one sister.

James A. (Andy) Muma. 77, of 342 Maple St.. Gladwin, died Sunday. Jan. 9, 1994, in the

MidMichigan Regional Medical Center, Gladwin, after a short illness. Born in Flint June 17, 1916,

he had spent most of his life in Gladwin County. Mr. Muma owned a saw mill and pallet mill

and retired in 1978. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Gladwin

R.L.D.S. Church.

 

Mr. Muma and the former Wanda Jacobs were married July 8. 1935, in Gladwin. She preceded him in death on Sept. 19, 1991.

 

Surviving are one son, James Jr. of St. Clair Shores; 5 brothers, Charles, Stanley, Delmer and Aaron of Gladwin and Harold of Flint; 2 sisters. Mrs. Vera French and Mrs. Fredia Kish of Gladwin; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother. Nelson and a sister, Zelma Bullard.

1916, she had spent her lifetime here. She was a member of the Gladwin RLDS Church. The former Wanda Jacobs, she was married to James Muma on July 8, 1935, in Gladwin.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by one son, James Jr. of St. Clair Shores; a sister,Villa Hughes of Utica; and one grandchild.

Leo R. Myers, 77, of Flint, died Wednesday, May 17, 1989, in Flint Osteopathic Hospital. Born in Pinconning, Oct. 5, 1911, he was an area resident since 1953. Mr. Myers was employed by Buick Motor Division for 30 years and retired in 1971. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Myers and the former Pearl Myers were married Feb. 11, 1929, in Gladwin.

Manford S. Newman, Jr., 87, of Gladwin, died May 4, 2005 at Tender Care Nursing Home in Mount Pleasant after a long illness. He was born April 24, 1918, in Genesee County to Manford S., Sr. and Eunice (Crowell) Newman. He married the former Helen McDonald in Flint on April 29, 1939. He was a job setter at A.C. Sparkplug in Flint, retiring in 1973. He had lived in Gladwin County since 1973, having previously resided in Flint. He attended Corner Stone Baptist Church.

   Surviving are his wife, Helen Newman of Gladwin, two daughters, Judith (Roy) Koskinen of Tennessee, and Joan (Roy) Brody of Cement City; five grandchildren, Scott (April) Koskinen of Detroit, Kyle (Kathy) Koskinen of Saline, Erik (Mandy) Koskinen of Denver, Dayne (Becky) Boyk of Jackson, and Brooke (Derek) Reese of Hudsonville; nine Great grandchildren; two sisters, Marion Forcier of Alanson, and Dymple (Dean) Wyatt of Clio; one uncle, Gaylord Crowel; two aunts, Geraldine Crowell and Margaret Crowell; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Newman, Jean Newman, and Joyce Newman; five brothers-in-law, Wallace, Wayne, Douglas, Delbert and Allan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Quenton Osterman, age 92, of Gladwin passed away July 11, 2002 at the Gladwin Living Center. “Pete” was born December 17, 1909 in Olean, New York to George and Millie McKay Osterman. He married Viola Howe on February 1, 1936 in Salamanca, New York. They came to Michigan in 1953, and to Gladwin in 1974. Viola passed away on October 30, 1987. He was one of the first members of the Nester Township Fire Department. Surviving are two daughters, Norma Osterman of Warren, Michigan, and Rosalie (Clark) Lucas of Bristol, Tennessee; and two grandchildren. Several brothers and sisters predecease him.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Sisson Funeral Home. Pastor Clark Schenk officiated.    Herold Ostrander, 37, died suddenly at his home in Butman Township on Friday of a heart attack. He was born November 23, 1919 in Flint and had been a resident of Gladwin County since infancy. He was married to the former Emma Dickerson, Sept. 11, 1943 in Gladwin.

   Surviving Mr. Ostrander are his wife, Emma; two sons, Aaron and Larry; and two daughters, Diane and Joan; his mother, Mrs. Lillie Ostrander of Gladwin; also two brothers, Clayton of Flint and Warren of Laingsburg; five sisterse, Mrs. Minnie Lennon of Mason, Mrs. Beulah Leash of Pontiac, Mrs. Iva Shannon of Ferndale, Mrs. Esther Voyanoff of Pontiac and Mrs. Mildred Servis of Birch Run. One son Lonnie preceded him in death.

Mrs. Minnie A. Pahl, 69, of Gladwin, died Monday, Sept. 27, at the Gladwin Area Hospital, following a short illness. A housewife, she was born in Gladwin, July 2, 1902, and lived here all her lifetime. Mrs. Pahl was the former Mamie Hager. Her husband, Edward Pahl, died in 1946.

   Surviving are two sons, Max Klemach of Saginaw, and Daniel Pahl of Gladwin; and one daughter, Mrs. Connie Bringle of Los Angles, Calif.; three brothers, Vern Hager of Florida, John (Hank) Hager of Gladwin, and Hugh Hager of Flint; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Yeager of Gladwin, and Mrs. Alice Wright of Saginaw; and seven grandchildren.

Sylvia M. Pero, 46, of Beaverton, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001 at St. Mary’s in Saginaw from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born Aug. 13, 1955 in Arizona, she was the daughter of Walter and Abbie (Persinger) Dunn. She lived most of her life in Gladwin County. Sylvia married Thomas Pero, Sept. 17, 1973 in Beaverton. She was a cashier at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center-Gladwin.

Besides her husband she is survived by three sons, Richard and wife Tracy of Beaverton, John of Auburn, and Thomas Jr. of Florissant, Mo.; two daughters, Delphine and husband Joseph Sharp of Gladwin and Hattie and husband Steve King of Flint; one granddaughter, Alexandra Pero; three grandsons, Steven and David Fleming and Brett Droptiny; her mother, Abbie Dunn of Gladwin; six sisters, Janice, Armilda, Tommy, and Wilma Dunn, all of Arizona, and Nancy and Diane Dunn, both of Ludington; and three brothers, Charles Dunn of Ionia, and Jimmy and Frederick Dunn, both of Ludington. She was preceded in death by her father; one grandson, Anthony Richard Pero; and one sister, Ora Jane Hooper.

Gordon E. Purdy, 73, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Gladwin, died suddenly Sunday, June 25, in

the Central Michigan Community Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. Born in Birmingham, July 25, 1915, he was a teacher for 3 years, a Farm Home Administration director for 30 years and a real estate agent, 10 years. Mr. Purdy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant, the Methodist Men's Club, a member of the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club and a life member of the DAV in Gladwin. Mr. Purdy and the former Lois Hooker were married June 16, 1940, in Gladwin.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Darl of Fremont, Keith of Mt. Pleasant and Greg of Virginia Beach, Va.; 2 daughters, Karon McDonald of Rockford and Diane Leffingwell of Mt. Pleasant; his mother, Celestine Purdy of Alma; 3 brothers, George of Saginaw, Thomas of Hazel Park and Clare of Oxford; one sister, Vera Studer, of Alma; 9 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.

     Failure to negotiate a curve was cited as the cause of an accident in which Duane Elwood Raby, 52, of West Branch was killed Friday night.

     Raby was northbound on M-76 about pm and apparently made no attempt to make the curve near the I-75 Business Loop, Ogemaw Sheriff Deputies said.  Once leaving the pavement, Raby's vehicle traveled 162 feet and struck a large pine tree about 12 feet above ground level.  The 1972 Dodge window van Raby was driving then came to rest on its side against the tree.  Raby, the only occupant in the van, was thrown through the window.  He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:25pm by deputy medical examiner Wynne Steuernol.  According to the sheriff department report, Kim LeDuc, 24, and Kirk LeDuc, 18, both of West Branch, witnessed the accident and contacted the West Branch State Police Post, who contacted the sheriff department.

     Sheriff's deputies were also advised of the accident by reports on CB radio.  Raby is the sixth traffic fatality in Ogemaw County this year.  ......(more to article - but doesn't pertain to D. Raby)

 

     Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Steuernol Funeral Chapel in West Branch for Duane Elwood Raby, 52, of West Branch, who was killed in a traffic accident Friday night on M-76.  Burial was in the Butman Cemetery in Gladwin following services with the Rev. Howard Higgins officiating.  Mr. Raby was born in West Branch and lived here most of his life.  He was employed in a body shop and was a veteran of World War II.

     He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three sons, Fred of Lincoln Park, Duane and Darrell of West Branch; one daughter Tanya R. Covel of Gladwin; one stepson, Charles Jones of Lincoln Park, his mother, Mrs. Nellie Raby of Alger; two sisters and one brother.

Nellie L. Raby, Alger - Services for Mrs. Raby, 88, will be Thursday at 1pm in the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin, with burial in Butman Cemetery there.  She died Sunday in Standish Community Hospital.  She was born March 31, 1892, in Saginaw.  Survivors include one son and two daughters.

 

 

Nellie L. Raby, 88, of Alger, died Sunday, August 24, in the Standish Community Hospital following a long illness.  Born in Saginaw on March 31, 1892, she had spent most of her life in Gladwin County.  Surviving are one son, Otto of Pontiac; 2 daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Doris) Rowe and Mrs. Arthur (Ola) Hilts of Alger; 20 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.  Services will be held Thursday at 1pm from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin, Chapel.  The Rev. Robert Brown will officiate and burial will be in the Butman Cemetery.

 

CARL J. RAYMOND (30 APRIL 1881 - 2 OCT 1971)

 

Carl J. Raymond, 90, of Butman Township, died Saturday, October 2, at the Gladwin Nursing Home. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in VanWert, Ohio, April 30, 1881, he came to Gladwin County in 1907 when he was 27 years old. He and the former Vada Masten were married in Gladwin Nov. 13, 1907, and would have been married 64 years in November. Mr. Raymond worked for Buick Motors in Flint for 30 years, retiring in the middle 1940's. Following his retirement, he farmed in Butman Township. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

   Surviving are his wife, Vada; two sons, Delvin and Walter of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Russell (Elva) Wright of Beaverton; a brother, Robert of Owosso; and a sister, Mrs. Susie Brodien of Santa Cruz, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.

   Services were held Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., at Mathews Chapel, with the Rev. Harold McAlllister and Rev. Willard Pendleton officiating. Burial was in Butman Township. Gladwin County Record dated 10-06/1971 Column - 4 Page - 2

Addelia F. Reid, 68, 5284 Spring Creek Dr., Skidway Lake, died Sunday, Oct. 9, in the Tolfree Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Born in Nester Township on August 4, 1915, she moved to Flat Rock in 1934 and then to Arenac County in 1967 where she operated Reid's Kozy Korner Restaurant. After retiring in 1976 she moved to Skidway Lake.

   The former Addelai Corlew, she was married to Ollie Reid on April 14, 1949, in Napoleon, Ohio. He preceded her in death October 15, 1982. James L. Richmond, 68, of Milford, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2000. He was a devoted and respected husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He worked in the Huron Valley School District as a social worker for over 23 years. He was an avid sailor and roller skater.

   He was the husband of Joyce; father of Catherine Richmond Grammer, Thomas (Laurie) Richmond, Ellen (Dale Zimmerman) Richmond Crittenden, Nathan (Elin Stanna) Richmond, and Jeremy (Tina) Richmond; former husband of Janet Gallery Richmond; grandfather of Jacob Crittenden, Shanna and Thomas Richmond, and Corey Grammer; brother of Rhoda (Leo) Richmond Cripps, Priscilla (Edwin) Richmond Stevens, and Sharon (James) Richmond VanConant; and also many nieces, nephews, cousin and dear friends.

Donald S. Rigg, 75, of Gladwin, died Saturday, June 3, 2000 at the Saginaw Veterans Hospital in Saginaw after a short illness. Born may 14, 1925 in Saginaw County, he lived in Gladwin County since 1956 and previously lived in Merrill. Donald married Bernice (Stryker) Jan. 30, 1953 in Hemlock. She preceded him in death in 1998. He was a veteran off World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer, retiring in 1989.

   Surviving are one brother, Gary and wife Wendy of Beaverton; three sisters, Donna and husband Robert Nohel of St. Charles, Wilma and husband Frederick Eurich and Marjorie and husband Ervin Neuenfeldt, all of Merrill. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Marion Shively and Alice Bucholz.

Mrs. Carrie C. Riley, 75, of Nester Township, died Saturday at the Moody Nursing Home in Harrison following a long illness. The former Carrie C. Walters was born in Paulding, Ohio, on June 2, 1885, and was married to Thomas Riley in Gladwin in 1902. He preceded her in death in 1935. Mrs. Riley had been a resident of Roscommon for 65 years.

 

Surviving are a son, John J. of Flint; a brother, Dan Walters, of Nester Township; a sister, Mrs. Mayme Hawley, of Gladwin; three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

John J. Riley Sr., of Flint and formerly of Gladwin, died Monday, May 16, in Flint. Mr. Riley retired from Buick Motors in 1966 after 39 years.

 

Surviving are his wife, Mae; one daughter, Mrs. Jacqueline Craine of Hallendale, Calif.; 2 sons, John Jr. and Thomas of Flint; 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

THOMAS B. RILEY (39 JAN 1872 – 18 SEP 1935)

 

Funeral services were held at the Latter Day Saint church on M-18, for Thomas Riley, conducted by Rev. Thomas Riley, conducted by Rev. Matthew Umphrey. Burial services were at Butman cemetery. Riley was born January 29, 1872, in Sage township, Gladwin county, and died September 17, 1935, of a stroke at the State hospital at Traverse City.He married Carrie Walters September 30, 1901. Six children were born to them, five of whom preceded him in death. He had been a resident of Gladwin county all his life excepting nine years which he lived in Roscommon county.

 

Surviving him are his wife, a son, John Riley, and family of Flint; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Hunt of West Branch and Mrs. Laura Walker of Detroit; and a niece, Agnes Banick, of Detroit. Gladwin County Record dated 9-25/1935 Column – 5 Page – 5.

 

EDWARD J. RUSSELL (17 FEB 1934 - 12 DEC 2003)

Edward J. Russell, age 69, of Suttons Bay formerly of Gladwin passed away Friday, Dec. 12 at his home following a brief illness. He was born February 17, 1934 in Dearborn to Edward and Gertrude Forrest Russell Sr. He spent his school years in Sandusky, Ohio. He graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a Bachelor of Science Degree in physics and mathematics. He was a competitive swimmer while in Sandusky and Miami. He married Jacqueline Hahn on June 28, 1959 in Ortonville, MN. He came to Gladwin in 1965 and worked for Brown Machine as head of engineering. In 1969 he started Devtron, Russell Inc. and his business operated out of the Schaffer House for 16 years. He also started a business called KamRu in Lorraine, Ohio and Van Dam Machine in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was a member of the Gladwin School Board, worked with the school vocational trades, and was a member of the Gladwin Theater. He was a member of what is now the Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church, formally Round Lake Baptist Church and presently, was a member of Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City. His passion was sailing and playing the violin with the Cadillac Symphony Orchestra. Ed served his country in the U.S. Navy.

Surviving him are his wife; son, Josh (Deanna) Russell of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Micheline (Frank) Padella of Suttons Bay and Nicole (Jeffery) Patt of Gladwin; and three granddaughters, Ashley and Heather Padella and Grace Patt. he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rita Jones and Kathleen Moultrie.

Services were held December 16, 2003 at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin. Rev. Wilson Decker of Bridgeman and Rev. Phil Noordmans of Traverse City officiated with burial in the Butman Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth St, Traverse City, Mi 49684-2386.

CHESTER O. SCHULER (17 JUNE 1944 - 9 MARCH 2001)

Chester O. Schuler, 56, of Madison Heights, died Friday, March 9, 2001 at St. John-Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights, after a long illness. He was born June 17, 1944 in Roscommon. Chester married Helen (Cavender), March 30, 1974 in Warren. He lived in Oakland County for 16 years and previously lived in Gladwin. He was a laborer for G.T.E. Valenite in Madison Heights, retiring after 32 years.

Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Karen and Becky Schuler, both of Madison Heights; two brothers, LeRoy of Gladwin and Terry of Flint; four sisters, Betty Smith and Sherley McCummings, both of Gladwin, Tish Pollington of McBain, and June Cavender of Madison Heights; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sons, Chet and Terry in 1975.

Services were held at noon Monday at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Rev. Harvey Cavender officiating. Burial was in Butman Cemetery, Gladwin.

CHARLES H. SCHULTZ (6 AUG 1924 - 31 MAY 2001)

 

Charles H. Shultz, 76, of Punta Gorda, Fla. and formerly of Gladwin, died Thursday, May 31, 2001 at Charlotte Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. Born Aug. 6, 1924 in Newstraitsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late William and Geneva (Dirth) Shultz. Charles married the former Joanne Thomas, July 14, 1951 in Hockaday.

He retired from General Motors and they moved to Florida in 1996. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Punta Gorda Elks, the United Methodist Church, and the Clio VFW Post #1452.

 

Besides his wife he is survived by two sons, Rick and wife Roxie of Tucson, Ariz., and Stephen and wife Valerie of Cadillac; two daughters, Lorraine and husgand Jean Landes of Cadillac, and Rena and husband Jeff Gilbert of Flint; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill of Hillsdale; and three sisters, Pauline Lehman of Gladwin, Vernus Long of Mt. Pleasant, and Martha Emerick of Midland.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Shultz in 1964, and a brother, Gene.

 

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Rev. James Lowman officiating. Burial was in Butman Township Cemetery.

Graveside services were under the auspices of VFW Post 11256.

Mrs. Susan Seipke, 78, of Butman Township, died today, Wednesday, June 30, in Bay City, following a long illness. Born in Oklahoma June 22, 1893, she was the former Susan Johnson and had lived in Gladwin County most of her life. She was married to Henry Seipke Sept. 22, 1916, in Roscommon County and they farmed in Butman Township for many years until their retirement. Mr. Seipke was a member of the Gladwin First United Methodist Church.

   Surviving are five  sons, Warren, Clarence and Thomas of Gladwin, Leonard of Essexville, and Clifford of Rochester; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Medel of Fraisier, and Mrs. Laura Belle Rozell of Mt. Clemens; three brothers, Jacob, Henry and Davi Johnson of Oklahoma; six sisters, Mrs. Lidia Davis of Gladwin, Mrs. Eva Crosby of Texas; Mrs. Kathern Biemer, Mrs. Lena Gunther, Mrs. Carolyn Penner, all of California, and Mrs. Elizabeth Bagolski of Oklahoma; 19 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Arthur T. Simrau, 70, of 1829 Wagarville Rd., Gladwin, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, in the Clare Nursing Home following an illness of two years. Born in Sage Township on January 13, 1910, he spent most of his lifetime here. Mr. Simrau was employed by General Motors in Flint during the 1940's and 50's. After moving back to Gladwin County he farmed.

   Surviving are 2 brothers, Elmer of Gladwin and Herbert of Florida; 2 sisters, Mrs. Emma Van Gordon of Brown City and Mrs. Edith Seitz of Gladwin. Ralph A. Simrau, 58, of Gladwin, died suddenly Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001. Born April 6, 1943 in Gladwin, he was the son of Henry and Mae (Thompson) Simrau. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Ralph was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Army. He was a factory worker for General Motors Buick Division in Flint, retiring in 1994 after 30 years. He was a member of the Trappers Association of Michigan and the National Rifle Association.

   Surviving are two brothers, Richard, and Louis and wife Ilene, all of Gladwin; seven sisters, Florence and husband Merle Hunt of Flint, Donna Dionne of Port Arthur, Texas, Carlene Simrau of Houghton Lake, Norma Ward of Pinconning, Onalee and husband Andy Betts of Burton, Edith and husband Ronald Bennett of Bentley, and Carol and husband Don Schott of Bay City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Howard and Roger; and one sister, Margaret Hermes.

   Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin, with Rev. Donald Haskell officiating. Burial will be in Butman Cemetery in Gladwin with a VFW graveside service.

ROGER SIMRAU KILLED IN VIETNAM ACTION

 

   Gladwin County's first casualty in Vietnam was reported last week end. Word was received Saturday, Nov. 20, that Sp/4 Roger A. Simrau, 24, was killed in Vietnam on Nov. 17. The information indicated that he was in hostile action on a search and destroy operation when killed.

   Roger is the son of Mrs. Mae Simrau, of Gladwin, and the late Henry Simrau. In addition to his mother, he is survived by three brothers and eight sisters. He graduated from the Gladwin High School in 1960. Roger would have been in service two years on December 12. The body will be brought home for burial but funeral arrangements are incomplete until its arrival. Gladwin County Record dated 11-24/1965 Column - 6 Page - 1

 

RITES SET FOR VIET CASUALTY

 

   Military services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home for Sp/4 Roger A. Simrau, 25, of Gladwin, who was killed Nov. 17 in action in Viet Nam. Roger was Gladwin County's first casualty in the Viet war. He was fatally wounded while on a search and destroy mission. He was born in Gladwin on Nov. 2, 1940, to Henry and Mae Simrau, and graduated from Gladwin High School in 1960. Roger entered the Army on Dec. 10, 1963.

   Full military honors will be accorded Specialist Simrau with an honor guard and pallbearers from Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda. Surviving are his mother, eight sisters, Carleen Simrau, Houghton Lake, Mrs. Donna Dionne, Port Arthur, Texas, Mrs. Florence Hunt, Flint, Mrs. Margaret Hermes, Ionia, Mrs. Norma Jean Ward, Pinconning, Onalee Simrau, Gladwin, Mrs. Edith Bennett and Carol Simrau of Pinconning; four brothers, Richard of Saginaw, Howard of Clare, Ralph in the U.S. Army, Fort Dix, N. J., and Louis, of Gladwin.

Karen M. Smith, 28, of 806 N. Arcade St., Gladwin, died Monday, Dec. 4 , 1989, in the MidMichigan Regional Medical Center, Midland, after a long illness. The former Karen Good, she was born in West Branch, Feb. 1, 1961, and had spent her lifetime in Gladwin County. She was employed at Handy and Harmon Automotive, Gladwin Division. Delmer A. Stickney, 77, of Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, June 15, 1989, at his home. Born in Gladwin, Aug. 10, 1911, he grew up here and moved away. He moved back to the area in 1979. Mr. Stickney was a heavy equipment operator in construction and a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local 324. Mr. Stickney and the former Lauretta Weber were married, July 25, 1959, in Detroit.

     Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Joyce St. Clair of Las Vegas; 2 step-sons, William Williamson of St. Louis, MO. and Michael Beaumarchiais of Highland; 2 brothers, Alex of Villa Park, Ill. and Leon of Indiana; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Samuel Strawser died Monday at his home in Butman, aged 73 years, 11 months and 13 days. He was an old soldier and had resided in Butman 14 years. Judson C. Taylor, 85, of Gladwin passed away Sunday, March 12 at the Gladwin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 29, 1920 in Vassar to Elton and Elois (Duryee) Taylor, Judson married the former Margaret "Carol" Lewis July 4, 1946 in Flint; she passed away
Nov. 1, 2002. Judson was a veteran of WWII and retired from Dow Chemical. He attended the First United Methodist Church and loved to hunt and fish.

Surviving are one son, Jerry (Connie) Taylor of Gladwin; three daughters, Judy (Gene) Raymond of Gladwin, Jane Taylor of New Jersey, and Joy (Daniel) Grogg of California; 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Welch of Midland and Robert Welch of Indianapolis, Indiana; and one sister, Betty Underwood of Gladwin. Margaret C. Taylor, age 75, of Gladiwn passed away Nov. 1, 2002 at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Home. Margaret was born April 17, 1927 in Mount Morentcey County to William and Lucy Blake Lewis. She married Judson Taylor on July 4, 1946 in Flint.

 

Surviving are her husband, Judson; one son, Jerry (Connie) Taylor of Gladwin; three daughters, Jude (Gene) Raymond of Gladwin, Jane Taylor (Bill Mew) of N. J., and Joy (Daniel) Grogg of Cal.; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; a half brother, William (Wanda) Lewis of Flint. Two brothers, Glen Lewis and Acel Edick; three cousins, Leva Addickson, Ancel Edick and Basil Edick, predecease her.

PAUL J. THIBODEAU (23 DEC 1920 - 22 MARCH 1983)

 

Paul J. Thibodeau, 62, of 5277 N. Butman Rd., Gladwin, died Tuesday, March 22, in Tolfree Memorial Hospital, West Branch. Born in Keego Harbor on December 23, 1920, he spent most of his life in Pontiac and moved to Gladwin County four years ago. He worked for General Motors Truck and Coach Division until retiring in 1978. Mr. Thibodeau served in the Army during World War II. He was married to the former Iva Moore in September 1978.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Diane Lucas of Fenton; 2 step-daughters, Donna Bancroft of Ferndale and Beverly Keeley of Imlay City; 4 step-sons, Arthur Mullin of Gladwin, Randy of Harrison, Lester and Andred of Ferndale; 2 brothers and 4 sisters; and 17 grandchildren.

Paul J. Thibodeau, 62, 5277 North Butman, Gladwin, died Tuesday in Tolfree Memorial Hospital, West Branch, following a long illness.

 

He was born in Keego Harbor Dec. 23, 1920. He attended Walled Lake schools. He lived most of his life in Pontiac and worked for the General Motors Corp. retiring in 1978. He married Iva Moore in September 1975. He moved to Gladwin County in 1978.

 

He leaves his wife; daughter, Diane Lucas of Fenton; stepsons, Arthur Mullin of Gladwin, Randy Mullin of Harrison, Lester Mullin of Ferndale, Andrew Mullin; stepdaughters, Donna Bancroff of Ferndale and Beverly Keeley of Imlay City; and 17 grandchildren.

 

Services will be at 11 am. Friday in the Mathews Funeral Home, Gladwin, with Bruce A. Mayo officiating.  Burial will be in Butman Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home anytime until time of service.

 

GILBERT E. THOMAS (29 JAN 1907 - 18 FEB 1979)

 

Gilbert E. Thomas, 72, of 4326 Hockaday Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, Feb. 18, in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Kokomo, Ind., on January 29, 1907, he came to Gladwin County in 1964. As a child he moved to Essex, Ontario, Can. and attended schools there. He then moved to Detroit where he taught at a flying school in 1928. Mr. Thomas moved to Winnipeg, Can., where he served as a Lieutenant in the Canadian Air Force from 1939 to 1941. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1946 and held the rank of major. Gene Autry flew under his command and was his co-pilot. After leaving the service he lived in Maybee until moving to Gladwin. Mr. Thomas was a member of the Gladwin County Farm Bureau.

   Surviving are one brother, Kenneth of Gladwin; and one sister, Mrs. Harriette Day of Beaverton. One brother, Rowland, preceded him in death in 1949. MARY C. (BUSHONG) THORINGTON (23 OCT 1918 - 2 NOV 2003)

 

   Mary C. Thorington, 85, beloved mother and grandmother, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003. She was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Putnam County, Ohio to Robert and Clara (Fritz) Bushong. Mary married Max A. Thorington on Oct. 27, 1940 in Gladwin. He passed away in 1981. She lived in Gladwin most of her life and the past two and a half years at Tendercare Nursing Home in Midland. Mary was a member of the Crump Church of God and the Log Cabin Church of God, Gladwin. She loved flowers and was an avid flower gardener. Mary was active at the nursing home with activities and helping and caring for other patients there.

   Surviving are one son, Allen “Ted” (Joyce) Thorington of Linwood; one daughter, Sharon (Denny) Russell of Midland; a daughter-in-law, Jan Thorington of Midland; 23 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, James (Pat) Bushong of Gladwin; one sister-in-law, Nellie Bushong of Gladwin; and several nieces, nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by three children, John, Kay and Max Jr.; two brothers, Grover and John; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.

   Services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003) at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin. Pastor Jim Hoggard will officiate and burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery. Max A. Thorington, 60, of 840 Sugar River Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Monday in the Gladwin Area Hospital. Born in Gladwin on August 17, 1920, he moved away and then back to Gladwin County in 1972 from Bay County. Mr. Thorington was a self-employed barber. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the DAV Gateway Chapter 137 in Clare. He and the former Mary Bushong were married on October 27, 1940, in Gladwin.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Max Jr. of Northville, Allen (Ted) of Crump and John of Gladwin; 2 daughters, Kay of Gladwin and Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Russell of Midland; 2 brothers, Roy of Holly, Mrs. Eliza Wager, Mrs. Cora Hutson, Mrs. Helen Wheeler and Mrs. Faye Edick of Gladwin, Mrs. Mable Gute of Chesaning and Mrs. Ruth Scott of Marbury, Ala.; and 15 grandchildren.

Max A. Thorington Jr. 57, of Fort Wayne, Ind., passed away Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999, after a short illness, in Fort Wayne V.A. Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Ind. He was formerly of Midland County, spending the last three years in Indiana. Max was born Aug. 26, 1941, in Gladwin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a taxi driver for Triple A, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Penny Sue and Dave Story of Bay City; granddaughter Mary Louise Story of Bay City; step daughters but like daughters, Donna and James Ingram, Jeri Sue and Osta Pruitt, an dMiechell and Shane Baggs all of Warsaw, Ind; eight step grandchildren, mother Mary Thorington of Midland; brother Allen "Ted" and Joyce Thorington, of Linwood; sister Sharon and Dennis Russell of Midland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Max Sr. (1981); his brother, John (1987); and his sister, Catherine (1992).

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin. The Rev. Paul Klassen will officiate, with burial at Butman Cemetery, Gladwin. LOYD ROBERT TRUCKLE (26 MAY 1927 - 20 MAY 2005)

Loyd Robert Truckle of Gladwin, husband, father, grandfather and avid farmer, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 20, 2005. Loyd was born on May 26, 1927 in Saginaw to Elmer and Olive A. (Burton) Truckle. He joined the army at the age of 18. After serving as a certified mechanic in World War II, he returned home to farm and later married Delphine Wazny of Saginaw in 1949. In the late ‘40s Loyd was a boat racer for the Central Michigan Boating Association. He was a journeyman millwright at Saginaw Products for 18 years working on such projects as the Lunar Rover for NASA. In 1965, he and his family relocated to Gladwin. He farmed until his retirement in 1979. Loyd enjoyed camping in the Upper Peninsula and traveling around the United States. He could often be seen walking around the campground with his crooked cane and his newest hat tilted gently to the side. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed hooking people into his stories as much as he did the fish he was discussing. He was a prominent member of Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church.

The children of the church often referred to him as the “Candyman,” for he always had a mint to give out to a waiting hand. Loyd partnered with State Representative Bill Sheltrown to champion a bill that would allow Michigan veterans to receive an honorary high school diploma. In 2001, after Sheltrown had pushed the bill through the Senate, Loyd was among the first recipients to receive his diploma. Loyd was not only a collector of memorable tales, but also of facts. He always had a clipping of a current event to discuss or an answer for Alex Trebek on Jeopardy.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Delphine; one brother, Jack (Margret) of Saginaw; five children, Janice (Larry) Wehner of Saginaw, Bernice (Terry) Eckley of Gladwin, Robert (Kelly) Truckle of Linwood, Gail (Eldon) Will of Eckerman, and Karen (Charles) Plank of Catawba, North Carolina; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25. The funeral will be held at Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church located at 3925 Round Lake Road north, of Gladwin. Burial will take place in Butman Township Cemetery. The VFW Post 7303 will take part in the grave side service. Memorials can be sent to the Gladwin Cornerstone Baptist Church building fund in lieu of flowers.

John L. Tucker, 86, of Butman Township, died Saturday, Jan. 1, in the Clare Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Paulding County, Ohio, on April 4, 1890, he came to Gladwin County in 1901. Mr. Tucker was a retired farmer and a veteran of World War I. Surviving are two daughters; one brother, George of Gladwin; and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Schofield of Midland. A son preceded him in death.

WAIVE L. (BAILEY) VAN VALKENBURGH (9 SEP 1908 - 3 FEB 2001)

Waive L. VanValkenburg, 92, of Bay City and formerly of Clare, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001 at home. Born Sept. 9, 1908 in Gladwin County, she was the daughter of the late Zora and Flossie (Dull) Bailey. Waive married Clarence VanValkenburg, July 22, 1932. He preceded her in death May 5, 1996. Together, Waive and Clarence owned and operated Van’s Furniture in Clare.

Surviving are one son, Robert of Bay City; two sisters, Ireta Bailey of Bay City and Doris and husband Maynard Fries of Auburn; two brothers, Ben and wife Kathryn Bailey of Bay City and James Bailey of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kim (Robert) Hardy, Robert (Heather) VanValkenburg, Christopher (Christine) Van Valkenburg, Peter Van Valkenburg and Mackenzie VanValkenburg; and six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Mariah, Tanner, Logan Reagan and Hannah. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fries and Veral Bailey; and one brother, Virgil Bailey.

KAY (WANGEROW) WAINRIGHT (29 JAN 1938 - 20 JULY 2003)

Kay Wainright, 65, of Gladwin, Michigan passed away Sunday, July 20, 2003 at her residence following a brief illness. She was born in Jackson on January 29, 1938 to Donald and Marian (Needham) Wangerow. She married William Wainright in Jackson on April 27, 1957. He survives her. The couple moved to Gladwin in 1979 from Bay City. She loved to bowl and golf. She was a member of the OES White Clover, Chapter 84, and a member of the Wagarville Community United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides her husband Bill are three daughters: Melissa (Greg) Partaka of Gladwin, Robin Wainright of Midland, and Theresa (Richard) Siler of Holland; eight grandchildren; her parents, Donald and Marian Wangerow of Jackson; her mother-in-law, Marion Wainright of Jackson; and two sisters: Carol (Carl) Richfield of Florida and Lana (Richard) Kubish of Jackson. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, William Wainright.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24 at the Wagarville Community United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Haskell and Rev. Carol Johns presiding, and with burial in Butman Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sisson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. with an Eastern White Star Service to be held at 7 p.m. On Thursday Mrs. Wainright will lie-in-state at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

ARNOLD WARD WALTERS (17 MAY 1918 - 3 FEB 1972)

 

Arnold Ward Walters, 53, of Flint, died in the Hurley Hospital Thursday, Feb. 3. A former Gladwin area resident, he was born in Michigan on May 17, 1918, and was a World War II veteran. He lived in Flint for 35 years and was a coordinator for the AC Spark Plug Company. Mr. Walters and the former Lula Belle Bowers were married in West Branch on November 21, 1936.

   Surviving besides his wife, Lula Belle; of Gladwin, are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Dan Walters, of Roscommon County; four daughters, Mrs. Cleo Heath, of Gladwin, Mrs. Marilyn Yeager, of Coleman, Mrs. Joann Fassett, of Beaverton and Mrs. Bonnie Lynn Bosman, of Gladwin; one son, Jerry, of Flint; three brothers, Zarold, of Flint, Wayne and F. T., both of Gladwin; one sister, Mrs. Betty Klemach, of Saginaw; and 12 grandchidren.

Daniel A. Walters, 91, of 10997 Dunham Lake Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Tolfree Memorial Hospital, West Branch. Born in VanWert, Ohio, on May 12, 1891, he moved to Roscommon County as a small boy 80 years ago. Mr. Walters was employed by the Conservation Department, was a superintendent of the WPA, and was a truck driver for the Roscommon County Road Commission and State Highway Dept. until retiring in 1953. He was married to the former Delilah Bradley March 2, 1917, in Gladwin. 

Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Zarold Wayne and F. J. of Gladwin; 21 grandchildren; 52 great grandchildren; and great great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. Elder Richard Hamilton officiated and burial was in the Butman Cemetery

Leslie “John” Walters, Leslie “John” Walters, 43, of Howell, died March 31, 2005 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor following a long illness. He was born in West Branch on July 29, 1961. He lived his whole life in Genesee County. Surviving are his mother, Nancy Walters of Fenton; two brothers, Dan (Teresa) Walters of Flint and David Walters of Muskegon; one sister, Ann Walters (Greg Ward) of White Hall; and his grandmother, Helen Walters of Midland. He is predeceased by his father, Leslie, and his grandfather, Zarold Walters.

Zarold D. Walters, 86, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch after a short illness. Born March 1, 1915 in Gladwin, he was the son of Daniel and Delilah (Bradley) Walters. Zarold married Helen (Hollenbaugh), Sept. 22, 1936 in West Branch. He was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. He was an assembly line worker for General Motors Fisher One in Flint, retiring in 1981 after 25 years.

 

Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Tim and wife Elaine of Harrison; one daughter, June Walters of Midland; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Leslie, Richard and Jim; two sisters; and three brothers.

Daniel A. Whitfield Sr., 46, 1485 Ritchie Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday July 14, 1991, in St.

Joseph Hospital, Tawas, of injuries received in an automobile accident Saturday night in Whitte -more. Born in Gladwin, June 30, 1945, he had spent his lifetime here. Mr. Whitfield was a self-employed welder. He was a 1963 graduate of Gladwin High School and served in Vietnam in the

Army. Mr. Whitfield and the former Jane Lyons were married May 14, 1966, in Bentley Township.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Daniel Jr. of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ruth Brown of Lapeer and Mrs. Jessie Brady of Texas. He was preceded in death by a son John, Aug. 13, 1971 and a brother, Samuel, Nov. 17, 1988.

Eva G. Willett, 88, of Gladwin, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at Bortz Nursing Home in West Branch following a lingering illness. Born Sept. 10, 1913 in Gladwin, she was the daughter of the late James and Grace (Westover) Simpson. Eva married Cecil Willett in Farmington, Jan. 29, 1934. He preceded her in death Jan. 12, 1994. She was a member of the Eastern Star White Clover Chapter #84.

Surviving are one daughter, Joanne and husband Mike Mobey of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Sefferneck of Alpena and Norma Jean Brugman of Waterford. Mrs. Blanch H. Winkler, 51, died at her home in Sherman township on Thursday, July 19. Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p. m. at the Reigle Funeral Home and burial took place in the Butman cemetery, with Rev. John Scott officiating.

 

Blanch Thompson was born in Gladwin county on January 15 1894, and was married to Charles

Winkler on October 13, 1913. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Henry and Melvin, both in the U. S. Army overseas; a daughter, Mrs. Marion Hilyard, at home; her mother, Mrs. Henry Thompson of Gladwin; three brothers, Earl Thompson of Flint, George Thompson of Temple and Alfred Thompson of Gladwin; three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Krotzer and Mrs. Alta Waltz of Flint and Mrs. May Simeron of Gladwin; and two granddaughters. Services Held for Charles Winkler

 

Funeral services were held Saturday at 1 p. m. at the Miner Chapel for Charles J. Winkler, 69, of Sherman Township, who died Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Eustis., Florida, of a heart attack. The Rev. Leon Franck officiated . and burial was in Butman Cemetery.

 

Born in Lodgepole, Nebraska, on May 23, 1891, he came to operate a farm in Sherman Township in 1925. On Oct. 13, 1913 he was married to the former Blanche Thompson in Gladwin. She preceded him in death in 1945. In April 1947 he was married to the former Elvina Winters in Gladwin.

 

Surviving are his widow, Elvina; two sons, Henry and Melvin, of Gladwin; a daughter, Mrs, Marion Hilyard, of Sterling; and ten grandchildren, Gladwin County Record dated 2-15/1961 Column - 7 Page - 1.

CATHY SUE WORDEN (8 AUG 1954 - 8 MAY 2003)

Cathy Sue Worden, age 48, of Gladwin, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2003 at her residence following a brief battle with cancer. She was born on Aug. 8, 1954 in Mt. Clemens to Duane and Agnes (Taylor) Worden, Sr. Cathy lived in Gladwin most of her live. She loved to play and write country music, and wrote her own poetry.

She is survived by her companion, Richard Reid of Gladwin; one son, Donald E. Lane of Kenross; one daughter, Charlene (Rod) Young of Gladwin; seven grandchildren; her parents, Duane and Agnes (Lucille) Worden of Pickford; two brothers, Duane Reva Worden, Jr. of Kasilof, Alaska, and Brian (Rhonda) Worden of Gladwin; and three sisters, Patricia (Richard) Lindberg of Clarkston, Karen Hauser of Gladwin, and Michele (Jerry) Crews of Barton, Flor.

She was predeceased by a son, Billy Lane, in 1973.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 12, 2003 at the Sisson Funeral Home with Rev. Bryan Johnson presiding, with burial at Butman Township Cemetery. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MARIE J. (HEFFERON) WORDEN (14 OCT 1912 - 25 FEB 1980)

 

Marie J. Worden, 67, of 5559 Two Mile Rd., Gladwin, died Monday, Feb. 25, in the Gladwin Area Hospial. Born in Emmet on October 14, 1912, she came to Gladwin County in 1971 from Lake Orion. The former Marie Hefferon, She was married to Earl Worden on October 20, 1930, in Pontiac.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by 3 sons, LaVerne of Oklahoma City, Okla., Duane of Gladwin and Roger of Gladstone, Mo; 2 daughters, Mrs. James (Maxine) Pittman of Clarkston and Mrs. James (Jeanette) Fraidy of Lake Orion; 3 brothers, Vincent of Port St. Lucie, Carl and Harold of Pontiac; 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

   Services will be held Thursday, at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Melvin Stauffer will officiate and burial will be in the Butman Township Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 02-27/1980 Column - 3 Page - 2

 

ALVIN B. YEAGER (02 APR 1913 – 02 JUNE 1984)

Alvin B. Yeager, 71, of Gladwin, died Saturday, June 2, 1984, in University Hospital in Ann Arbor following a long illness.

He was born in Butman Township, Gladwin County, April 2, 1913. He lived most of his life in Butman Township. He attended Gladwin schools. He married Iva Grace Ockerman, June 1, 1935, in Butman Township.

He leaves his wife, Iva; daughter, Mrs. Gene (Margaret) Myers of Gladwin; sons, Walter (Don) Yeager of Coleman and Gerald F. Yeager of Gladwin; 13 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; and sisters, Margaret Thomas of Gladwin and Lorraine Powley of Nakomis, Fla.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mathews Funeral Home, Gladwin, with the Rev. Helena Egts officiating. Burial will be in Butman Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today. There will be a Masonic memorial service Tuesday at 8 p.m.

 

VICTOR LEROY YOUNGS (? - MARCH 1914)

 

Victor Leroy, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. George Leroy Youngs, aged three months and eight days, died at their home in Butman after a short but severe attack of pneumonia Friday at 1:30 p.m. Services were conducted by Rev. J. N. Wilson at the Hockaday Free Methodist church Sunday at 11 a.m. and the home. Interment in the north Butman cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 03-26/1914 Column - 3 Page - 1
