NOVA JEAN (MCINTOSH) ADAMS (16 NOV 1930 - 29 DEC 2004)

 

Nova Jean Adams, Nova Jean Adams, 74, of Gladwin, died Dec. 29, 2004 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Saginaw, suddenly. She was born Nov. 16, 1930 in Harrison to Ray and Beryl (Dunning) McIntosh. She lived in Gladwin County all her life. She married Carl Adams in Gladwin on Dec. 16, 1952; he died in 1961. Nova was a cook at Mid-Michigan Medical Center-Gladwin until she retired in 1994 after 20 years.

 

Surviving her are her daughters, Vickie (Donald) Chambers of Gladwin, Linda (Rod) Reid and Pam (Jerry) Worth, both of Mt. Pleasant, and Tammy Adams of Midland; 15 grandchildren and two Great grandchildren; sisters Leola Hude of Gladwin, Vonnie Leeck of Beaverton, Ella Doyle of Hemlock, Carol Gower of Bay City, Theron “Sue” Robbins of Auburn, Marsha McIntosh of Coleman, and Debbie McIntosh of Gladwin; brothers Jim McIntosh of Flint, Vern McIntosh of Midland, Leonard McIntosh and Tom McIntosh, both of Gladwin; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; parents; brothers, Herb McIntosh, Lyle McIntosh and Jerry McIntosh; and sister, Elsie Swinehart.

 

Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 31 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin, with pastor Rod Reid officiating. Burial took place at Skeels Cemetery, Gladwin. Memorial contributions may be made to Lupus Foundation.

 

VIOLET R. ADAMS (12 OCT 1911 - 5 OCT 1999)

Violet R. Adams, 87, of Gladwin, passed away Oct. 5 at the Lapeer Regional Hospital. She was born Oct. 12, 1911 in Sherman township to Norman and Ida Mae VanHorn Near. Violet married Mike Adams April 18, 1933 in Oberlin. Mike passed away Jan. 28, 1987. She has lived in Sherman Township all of her life.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce and husband Eldon Benmark of Clio, Alice Potter of Corunna, Marion and husband Jerry LaMotte of Grayling; one son, Richard Adams of Grayling; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Near, one sister, Kurn Yeager and one grandson Rodney Benmark in 1991.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin. Rev. Bryan Johnson officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery.

LOUISE I. (MARSH) AVERILL (29 JUNE 1922 - 19 FEB 1998)

 

Louise I. Averill, 75, of Gladwin, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998 at her home. Born June 29, 1922 in Auinmont, W.V., she was the daughter of George and Annie Avis March. Louise married Paul Averill, Feb. 8, 1947 in Muskegon. They moved to Gladwin in 1967. Louise was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Historical Society and the Harrison Community Squares.

   Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, David and wife Colleen of Blythe, Colo., Thomas and wife Susan of Ferndale; one daughter, Doris Harmon of Troy; two brothers, George Marsh of Shepherd, and Alvin Marsh of Clinton township, three sisters, Lucille Robert and Rita Stecker, both of Gladwin,and Louelle McGraff of Laramine, Wy.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother.

   Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Kurt Eichinger, Lutheran lay minister, officiating. Burial was in Skeels Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 02-25/1998 Column - 5 Page - 2

 

PAUL R. AVERILL (16 APRIL 1923 - 16 JULY 1998)

 

Paul R. Averill, 75, of Gladwin, died Thursday, July 16, 1998 at the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland. Born April 16, 1923 in St. Paul, Minn., he was the son of Otis and Leah Lamb Averill. He served his country during World War II in the Army. Paul married the former Isabel Louise Marsh, Feb. 8, 1947 in Muskegon. She preceded him in death Feb. 19, 1998. They came to Gladwin in 1967. Paul belonged to the American Legion Post 171, The American Legion Post 171, The Harrison Squares, and The Honey Bee Stingers.

   Surviving are four sons, David and wife Colleen of Blythe, Calif., Thomas and wife Susan of Ferndale, Gene of Luther, and Paul Curtis of Findley, Ohio; one stepdaughter, Doris Harmon of Troy; two brothers, Phil and Otis, both of Muskegon; one sister, Mamie Marsh of Muskegon; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

   Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Joseph White officiating. Burial was in Skeels Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 07-22/1998 Column - 5 Page – 2

MARY JO (HARDING) BROUILLETTE (16 APRIL 1954 - 3 JULY 2001)

Mary Jo Brouillette, 47, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001 at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland after a short illness. Born April 16, 1954 in Hazel Park, she was the daughter of Jess and Lota (Yeager) Harding. She was a lifetime resident of Gladwin County. Mary Jo married William Brouillette, Dec. 1, 1993 in Gladwin. She was a homemaker.

Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Clint Harding and William Brouillette, both of Gladwin; her parents, Jess and Lota Harding of Gladwin; one sister, Julie Meneer of Gladwin; one brother, Neal Harding of Gladwin; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Delmar and Louisa Yeager and Jess and Francis Harding.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin with Pastor Tim Lambert officiating. Burial was in Skeels Cemetery in Gladwin.

ERVIN J. BURMEISTER (14 SEP 1906 - 10 MARCH 1977)

 

Ervin J. Burmeister, 70, of Gladwin, died Thursday March 10, in the Clare Nursing Home following a long illness. Born in Michigan on September 14, 1906, he was raised in Gladwin County. Mr. Burmeister moved to Detroit and then returned to Gladwin in 1939. He was a retired carpenter. Mr. Burmeister and the former Leona Fay were married in Angola, Ind. She preceded him in death on June 7, 1953.

   Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Henry (Clara) Ziemer of Gladwin; one brother, Harold of Gladwin; and 2 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in the Skeel's Cemetery. FRANK E. BURMEISTER (21 JULY 1895 - 13 FEB 1955)

 

SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK SUNDAY

 

   Frank E. Burmeister, 59, died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 13. He lived alone and was found dead by his brother, Ervin. The son of the late Joh and Augusta Burmeister, he was born July 21, 1895 in Detroit. He was a veteran of World War I; having served in the Medical Division. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Mable Stoike of Beaverton; two grandchildren; four brothers, Ervin, Harold and Alfred of Gladwin and Walter of Detroit; one sister, Mrs. Mable Sersaw. HAROLD J. BURMEISTER (14 JUNE 1904 - 19 DEC 1980)

 

Harold J. Burmeister, 76, of 4348 Shearer Rd., Gladwin, died Friday, Dec. 19, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following a long illness. Born in Detroit on June 14, 1904, he came to Gladwin County in 1939. Mr. Burmeister was employed by Austin Construction in Midland. He was married to the former Marion Bennett on June 19, 1964, in Gladwin. She preceded him in death October 10, 1971.

   Surviving are 3 step-sons, Harold Allman of Clio, Hammans Allman of Swartz Creek; 2 step-daughters, Mrs. Joyce Campbell of Gladwin and Mrs. Joann Taylor of Clio; 18 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Services were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel. The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. AMBER D. (KELLEY) CAMPBELL (20 SEP 1920 - 22 APRIL 2006)

 

Amber D. Campbell, 85, of Gladwin, died April 22, 2006 at Gladwin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 20, 1920 in Gladwin to Waldo and Laura (Hayward) Kelley. She married Melvin R. Campbell August 18, 1 939 in Clare. She was a lifetime resident of Gladwin. She was a homemaker and was active with Eastern Star, Gladwin.

   Surviving are two daughters, Sally Anderson and friend Steve Pratt, and Judy Hale, all of Gladwin; one son, Junior (Mary) Campbell, of Gladwin; six grandchildren; 11 Great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; several step-Great-grandchildren; two sisters, Veda Molesworth and Jennie Howey, both of Gladwin; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

DELVIN J. CASSIDAY

 

   Delvin J. Cassiday, 82, of Gladwin passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 at Mid Michigan Medical Center - Gladwin after a long illness. He was born Feb. 26, 1921 in Gladwin to J. Leonard and Sylvia (Gray) Cassiday. He married Maxine (Knight) Cassiday on June 20, 1941. He worked as a structural iron worker of Local 25, Detroit, Michigan, and retired in 1967. He was a veteran of U.S. Army 35th Division, WWII. He was a life long resident of Gladwin County. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 7303, D.A.V. in Lake, Trench Rats of Bay City, and Gladwin Oddfellows.

   He is survived by his wife Maxine Cassiday of Gladwin; two daughters Shirley (James) Newman and L. Jean (Charles) Cassiday-Nienhuis both of Gladwin; one son, Richard (Kathleen) Cassiday of Gladwin, nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers; Lloyd, Everettt, Albert and Edward.

   Services were held Nov. 21 at Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Dennis Feurestine officiating. Burial took place at Skeels Cemetery in Gladwin. Gladwin County Record dated 11-26/2003 Column - 5 Page - 2

George Cassidy, aged 59 year, 5 months, 19 days, died in Sherman Saturday, of liver and intestinal trouble. He leaves five sons and one daughter, Elmer, Leonard, William, Thomas and Mavord, and Mrs. Ed Nash. The body was interred in Sherman township cemetery. Mr. Cassidy was a veteran of the civil war. Ruth I. Cooper, 67, of Gladwin, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1983, in Gladwin Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born March 10, 1916, in Skeels, where she was a lifetime resident. She married Harry Cooper, March 1, 1933, in Skeels. He died Dec. 15, 1980. She was a member of the Skeels Baptist Church.

 

She leaves daughters, Mrs. Wesley (Dorothy) Abbott of Gladwin and Mrs. Arnold (Betty) Elwood of Saginaw; twin sons, Eldon Cooper of Gladwin and Allen Cooper at home; 11grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.   A daughter, Maxine McMullen died Sept. 3, 1971. 

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Skeels Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Briggs officiating.  Burial will be in Skeels Cemetery.  Friends may call at the Mathews Funeral Home anytime after 7p.m. today.

Services for Mrs. Cooper, 67, who died Tuesday at Gladwin Community Hospital, will be at 2 p m Friday at Skeels Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. HELEN LYDIA (HANSEN) CRYSTAL (2 NOV 1963 - 16 JULY 1983)

Mrs. Helen Crystal, 46, of 1263 County Line Rd., Franklin Township, died Saturday, July 16, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following a short illness. Born in Staples, Minn., on November 2, 1936, she moved to Clare County 7 years ago from Rochester. She was a member of the Harrison V.F.W. Auxiliary. The former Helen Hansen, she was married to Joseph (Buck) Crystal in Rochester.

   Surviving besides her husband are, 2 daughters, Mrs. Charles (Wendy) Bitner of Staples and Shawnna at home; her father, Orville Hansen of Staples; 2 brothers, Orville L. of Almont and Leon of Gladwin; one sister, Mrs. Donna Harry of Staples; and one grandson.

JOSEPH CRYSTAL (1 NOV 1924 - 3 NOV 1984)

Joseph (Buck) Crystal, 60, of 1263 Borders Dr., Gladwin, died suddenly Saturday, Nov. 3. Born in Rochester Nov. 1, 1924, he came to Gladwin County in 1976. He was a crane operator for Underwood Sand and Gravel in Pontiac and retired in 1976 after 32 years. Mr. Crystal served in the Army during World War II. He was married to the former Helen Hansen and she preceded him in death July 16, 1983. Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Charles (Wendy) Bittner of Staples, Minn, and Shawnna Crystal of Gladwin; 2 brothers, Woodrow of Cadillac and Phillip of AuGres, 2 sisters, Mrs. Ruth Parkin of Utica and Mrs. Gertie Rowley of Sterling Heights; a dear friend, Twylla Peterson of Gladwin; and one grandson.    Mrs. Alt Cuddie, 76, of Sage Township, died at her home Tuesday, Nov. 1 following an illness of several months. The former Nona J. Poland was born Aug. 27, 1890 in Paulding County, Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Poland, and came to Gladwin County with her parents when she was 5 years old. She was married to Alt Cuddie in Gladwin on Nov. 10, 1908.

   Services will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Skeels Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. Carl Briggs, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in the Skeels Cemetery. Friends may cal at the Miner Chapel until 11:00 a.m. Friday. Mrs. Cuddie is survived by her husband, Alt; a son, Clare, at home; three daughters, Mrs. Morea Foutch of Midland, Mrs. Irene Linton of Wayne, and Mrs. Iva Sherman of Gladwin; 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Jake Bunting and Mrs. Cosy Shufelt, of Midland, and Mrs. Oren Anderson of Bay City. LOTTIE (MYERS) CURTIS (3 MAY 1895 - 20 FEB 1979)

 

Mrs. Lottie Curtis, 83, of 108 May St., Gladwin, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Midland Hospital Center. Born in Sherman Township on May 3, 1895, she spent her lifetime here. Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Skeels Baptist Church, the Gladwin County Farm Bureau and World War I Veterans Auxiliary. She operated a rest home in Gladwin for several years. The former Lottie Myers, she was married to Gordon Curtis on September 23, 1974, in Gladwin.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by 3 sons, Bernard Yoesting of Flint, Herman Yoesting of Gladwin and Calvin Yoesting of Beaverton; 3 sisters, Mrs. Bertha Shufelt of Midland, Mrs. Faith Gallagher of Flint and Mrs. Nell Roberts of Detroit; 2 brothers, Herb Myers of Lansing and Harry Myers of Flint; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren.

HERMAN DOEDE (30 OCT 1896 - 14 MAY 1983)

 

Herman Doede, 86, of 2203 N. Oberlin Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday, May 14, in the Midland Hospital Center. Born in Rotchins, Russia-Poland, on October, 30, 1896, he came to the United States in 1905 and settled in Cleveland. Mr. Doede came to Gladwin County in 1908. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was a member of the Round Lake Baptis Church and the World War I Veterans Barracks 3421. He was married to the former Violet Behnke on December 26, 1927, in Alpena.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by 3 sons, Robert of Troy, Richard of Sanford and Ronald of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Joann) Barth of Pontiac; 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Round Lake Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Brown officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. DONNA L. (FOUTCH) GLASGOW (9 MARCH 1923 - 22 JULY 2005)

 

Donna L. Glasgow, Donna L. Glasgow, 82, of Gladwin died July 22, 2005 at Gladwin Pines Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born in Clare on March 9, 1923 to Right and Frances (Hokemeyer) Foutch. She lived in Gladwin County most of her life and was a Receptionist at Dr. Sullivan’s office. She had been retired for over 20 years.

 

Surviving are three daughters, Sharon Prince of Eaton Rapids, Tony McGinn of Ypsilanti, and Marta Smith of Baltimore, Maryland; one son, Vic Stanley of Gladwin; three brothers, Franklin (Ruth) Foutch of Gladwin, Louis (Nancy) Foutch of Lansing, and Ronald Foutch of Midland; two sisters, Rosali Phillips of Saginaw and Bev (Larry) Robinson of Gladwin; nine grandchildren and four Great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two children, Michael and Charlie Glasgow; two sisters, Florence Foutch and Betty Edick; and one brother, Dennis Foutch.

 

Funeral services were held Monday, July 25 at Sherman Township (Skeels) Cemetery in Gladwin, with Pastor Brad Withrow officiating. Burial followed at Sherman Township (Skeels) Cemetery, Gladwin.

 

MICHAEL KEITH GLASGOW (23 APRIL 1943 - 30 MARCH 1974)

 

Michael K. Glasgow, 30, died suddenly Saturday, March 30, at his Warren home. Born in Midland April 23, 1943, he had previously lived in Lansing and Gladwin, and was a veteran of the Viet Nam War. He was an iron worker by trade.

   Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Donna Glasgow of Gladwin; his father, Keith of Midland; a brother, Victor of Lansing; 2 sisters, Mrs. Toni McGinn and Mrs. Sharon Dinels both of Lansing; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Right Foutch of Gladwin, and Mrs. Mae Glasgow of Midland.

LENA E. (TASH) GRAY (12 MAY 1904 - 26 JUNE 1977)

 

Mrs. Lena E. Gray, 73, of 4115 Cassidy Rd., Gladwin, died Sunday, June 26, in the Gladwin Area Hospital following an illness of four months. Born in Larkin Township, Midland County, on May 12, 1904, she came to Gladwin County in 1939. She helped operate Gray's Meat Plant with her husband at Skeels. The former Lena Tash, she was married to Walter Gray on June 20, 1936, in Bay City.

   Besides her husband, she is survived by 2 sisters, Lillian Campbell of Hamilton Township and Mrs. Mabel Fridel of Phoniex, Ariz.; and one brother, Harry of Skidway Lake. Services were held today, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. from the Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Block officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. EDITH (CASSIDAY) GREAVES (8 AUG 1915 - 31 JAN 2004)

 

Mrs. Greaves, Mrs. Greaves, age 88, passed away Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Center following a long illness. She was born in Gladwin on Aug. 8, 1915 to the late Maver and Nellie (Gilmore) Cassiday. She married Earl Greaves on June 30, 1934. He preceded her in death in Sept. of 1984. Together they owned and operated the Greaves Grocery Store in Skeels. She was a member of the Skeels Baptist Church.

 

She is survived by one son; James K. (Patricia) Greaves Sr. of Gladwin; one daughter, Sharon (Floyd) Davis of Gladwin; six grandchildren; twelve Great grandchildren; and one Great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by one sister and two brothers.

 

Funeral Services were held Feb. 3, 2004 at Skeels Baptist Church with Rev. George Coons officiating with burial in Skeels Cemetery. The Sisson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

WESLEY CHARLES GRUNO, SR (16 SEP 1932 - 10 JUNE 1991)

 

Wesley C. Gruno, 58, of 5469 Hillcrest St., Gladwin, died Monday, June 10, 1991, at his home after a home illness. Born in Flint, Sept. 16, 1932, he moved to Gladwin 25 years ago from Flint. Mr. Gruno enlisted in the Army in 1950 and served in Korea. After 9 years he was in the reserve for 3 years and received a medical discharge. Mr. Gruno was a member of the Harrison VFW Post 1075 and a charter member of the Harrison American Legion Post 404. Mr. Gruno and the former Gertrude Woodard were married Jan. 12, 1954, in Flint.

Colin Scott Harry, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Harry of 5236 Irene St., Gladwin, died following birth Friday, April 17, at the Clare Osteopathic Hospital. Surviving besides his parents are 3 sisters, Robin, Tiffany and Jill, at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Harry of Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Schramm of Saginaw; and paternal great grandparents, Orville Hansen of Minnesota and Mrs. Olga Harry of Utica.

CHARLES J. HAYWARD (6 SEP 1858 - 11 JULY 1939)

 

Charles J. Hayward died at the home of his son Leslie Hayward July 11. Mr. Hayward was born in Canada, September 6, 1858, and at the age of seven years came to Michigan with his parents. In 1886 he was married to Matilda Jane Livingway and to them were born seven children. IN 1897 he moved his family from Sanilac county to Gladwin. His wife preceded him in death in 1932 and one son, Stanley E., died in 1924.

   Surviving him are three sons, Harold E., Leonel V. and Leslie A., all of Sage, three daughters, Mrs. Waldo Kelly of Sage, Mrs. Sam Fritcher of Flint and Mrs. H. Dell Greer of McClure, one sister, Mrs. Laura Livingway of Detroit and twenty grandchildren.

   Harold Eugene Hayward, 55, of Sage township, a veteran of World War I, died at the Veterans's Hospital, at Dearborn, on Wednesday, October 17, after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held at the Hall Funeral Home, on Sunday at 2 p.m., with burial in the Skeels cemetery. Rev. John Scott, of the Gladwin Methodist church officiated, with services under the auspices of the American Legion.

   Mr. Hayward was born in Sanilac county, on August 12, 1890, and was married to Mable Prentice, on December 7, 1925, in Mt. Clemens. He has been a resident of Gladwin county for the past 48 years. Surviving are his wife; two brothers, Leonel and Leslie Hayward, of Sage township; three sisters, Mrs. Laura Kelly and Mrs. Rose Fritcher, of Flint, and Mrs. Dell Greer, of Gladwin; also three step-children. LEONAL B. HAYWARD DIES AT HOME

 

   Leonal B. Hayward, 61, passed away at his home in Sage township Friday, January 15. He had been in  ill health for about four months. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Hall Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Briggs, of the Skeels Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was made in the Skeels cemetery, under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Hayward was born in Sanilac county on September 15, 1892, and had resided in Gladwin for the past 56 years. He was a mason by trade, a veteran of World War I and operated a farm in Sage township. On July 27, 1931, he was married to Miss Fern M. Spohn at Gladwin.

   Surviving are his wife, Fern; two sons, Charles E. Hayward of Beaverton and Stanely Hayward of Gladwin; and seven daughters, Laura, Nora, Donna, Irene, Nancy, Ruth and Joan, all at home; one brother, Leslie, of Gladwin; three sisters, Mrs. Veda Greer and Mrs. Laura Kelly, of Gladwin, and Mrs. Rose Fritcher of Flint; also one grandchild. Anthony Ray Howey, 17, of 5634 North M-18, died Wednesdy night, Aug. 16, of injuries after being struck by a pickup truck near Meredith. Born in Flint on Dec. 7, 1954, he had lived in Gladwin County for five years. He was a student in the Harrison High School. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howey; three brothers, Gary and Herb, of Flint, and Eugene, at home; three sisters, Dawn, Melody and Cynthia at home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. O. J. Howey, of Flint and Mrs. Laura Kelley, of Gladwin.

Edwin R. Hude, 55, of 3900 Renas Rd., Gladwin, died Tuesday, June 29, in the Midland Hospital Center following an illness of a year. Born in Sherman Township on September 12, 1926, he had spent his lifetime here. Mr. Hude was employed in the service department of Dow Chemical Co. for 30 years. He retired in April. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Mr. Hude and the former Leola McIntosh were married September 4, 1948, in Gladwin.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one sn, Robert of Gladwin; 4 daughters, Verna and Marilyn of Gladwin, Mrs. Tom (Ruth) Morales of Texas and Mrs. Roger (Alma) Dowis of Saginaw; one brother, Robert of Warren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Margaret Basner of Coleman, Mrs. Elizabeth Flaugher and Mrs. Elsie Lloyd of Gladwin; 3 half-sisters, Mrs. Emma Klawitter of Toledo, Mrs. Marie Eddy of Georgia and Mrs. Martha Corbus of Sterling Heights; and 3 grandsons.

JOSEPH E. JACOBS (22 FEB 1920 - 9 AUG 1978)

 

Joseph E. Jacobs, 58, of Mt. Clemens and a summer resident at McGilvery Lake in Sage Township, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, in the Midland Hospital following a short illness. Born on February 22, 1920, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Jacobs retired in May 1977 as a trim technician for General Motors at the Warren Tech Center after 37 years. He had anticipated on moving to Gladwin County next year. He was married to the former Lorraine Ott on August 19, 1950, in Detroit.

   Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Larry of Mt. Clemens; one daughter, Mrs. Kathy Walkenhorst of Mt. Clemens; 5 brothers and 3 sisters in the Detroit area. JOSPEH HERBERT KELLY (? - 2 JULY 1966)

 

INJURY FATAL IN ACCIDENT

 

   A sage Township father of five was seriously injured in the Gladwin Hospital following an accident about 6:20 p.m. on M-18 near Skeels Saturday. Joseph H. Kelley, 43, was thrown from his cab-over truck after it struck a parked car on the shoulder of the highway, sheriff's officers said. Kelley was rushed to the hospital where he died a short time later of a fractured skull, hospital authorities said.

   Officers said two cars operated by Doris Zaborowski and her husband, Richard, and a pickup driven by Mrs. Maried Willford were parked in a row on the shoulder on the north side of the highway facing west. Mrs. Zaborowski told them that Kelley came over a small hill from the west and his truck went into a skid. It came across the road rear-end first and hit her car, which was between the other two vehicles, in the left front fender forcing her car part way into the ditch.

   Kelley was thrown from the truck, she said, and the truck ended up along side her car. Officers could find no explanation why the truck went into the skid. Mrs. Zaborowski, Mrs. Willford, who was sitting in the Zaborowski car, and Cathern Zaborowski, were not seriously injured, deputies said. Gladwin County Record dated 07-06/1966 Column - 3 Page - 1

SCOTT DOUGLAS KENNEDY (12 MAY 1968 - 27 JULY 1974)

Scott Douglas Kennedy, 6, of Sherman Township, died Saturday, July 27, in Gladwin Area Hospital, from a gunshot wound. Born in Gaines, he lived in Flint prior to moving to Gladwin County 2 1/2 years ago with his parents. The youngster would have been in the first grade at the Charles Amble School, Harrison, this fall. He was born May 12, 1968.

   Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas W. Kennedy, of Sherman Township; 2 brothers, Jerry Lee and Michael William; 1 sister, Cynthia Lynn, all at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Parrett and Mrs. Arlene Kennedy, all of Flint. Alvin E. Kleiss, 62, of 3478 Renas Rd., Gladwin, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Midland Hospital Center after an illness of several months. Born in Gladwin Aug. 11, 1924, he had spent his lifetime here. Mr. Kleiss was an insulator with Asbestos Workers Union 47. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Round Lake Baptist Church, Gladwin Co. VFW Post 7303 and the Michigan Harness Horseman's Assoc. Mr. Kleiss and the former Jean Waeiss were married Jan. 22, 1949, in East Detroit.

   Surviving besides his wife, are 2 sons, James of Phoenix, Ariz. and Gary of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Morris (Judy) Grove of Gladwin; 2 brothers, Harold of Detroit and Bill of Florida; 3 sisters, Agnes Hall of Florida, Helen Kleinfield of Cleveland, Ohio and Florence Alter of Detroit. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

   Jean V. Kleiss, 61 of 3478 Renas Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Thursday, Oct. 29, at the home of her daughter Judy Grove, 3040 Renas Rd. Born in Detroit June 13, 1926, she moved to Gladwin in the early 1950's. She was a member of the Round Lake Baptist Church. The former Jean Waeiss, she was married to Alvin Kleiss Jan. 22, 1949, in Detroit. He preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1986.

   Surviving are 2 sons, James of Phoniex, Ariz, and Gary of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Mrs. Morris (Judy) Grove of Gladwin; 2 brothers, Robert of Almont and Richard of Mansfield, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Betty Roughley of Redford; and 2 grandchildren. James H. Levi, 58, of Gladwin, died Sunday, July 13, 1997 at his home, following a long illness. Born April 26, 1939 in Sadie, Tenn., he lived here the past four years and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. James married Linda Wiseman in October 1981.

   Besides his wife he is survived by three sons, James of Annapolis, Md., Donald of Detroit, and Ronald of Ionia; one daughter, Lisa Francello of Las Vegas, Nev.; one stepdaughter, Donna Stewart of Detroit; one sister, Jimmie Ruth Robinson of Detroit; and 13 grandchildren.

ILLNESS FATAL TO MRS. ALICE LYONS - Mrs. Alice M. Lyons, 78, of Hamilton Township, died
Monday morning, Dec. 26, following an illness of several months.  Services were held today (Wednesday) at 1:00 p.m. at the Skeels Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Carl Briggs officiating. Burial was in the Skeels Cemetery.  Born in Paulding County, Ohio, Nov. 10, 1888, the former Alice McLain came to Gladwin County with her parents at three years
of age, and they settled at Skeels. In 1903 she was married to Elmer Lyons in Hamilton Township who preceded her in death in February, 1960.  Mrs. Lyons is survived by two son, Albert (Pat) Lyons of Hamilton Towns hip and John Lyons of Gladwin; one daughter, Mrs. Calvin (Cozy) Bailey of Gladwin; 10 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. ILLNESS FATAL TO ELMER LYONS - Elmer K. Lyons, 83, of Hamilton township, died
February 20, after an illness of two months. Mr. Lyons, a retired farmer, was born January 4, 1877, in Bellville, Canada, and came to this country when he was seven years old. He married the former Miss Alice McLain in 1904.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; three sons, John of Gladwin, Albert of Harrison, and Pearl Lyon, of New York; two daughters, Mrs. Cozy Craford of Clare and Mrs. Leona Harrold of Gladwin; a
Bryon, of Gladwin; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. One son and one daughter preceded him in death.

MRS. ELMIRA LYONS - Mrs. Elmira Lyons died of bronchial pneumonia at the home of her son Elmer in Hamilton township, Clare county, Jan. 9.  She was aged 77 years. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 1 and at the schoolhouse at 1:30, conducted by Rev. E. R. Hill of Skeels Baptist church.  Burial in Sherman cemetery.

ELMYRA F. LYONS - Elmyra F. Lyons was born in Bellville, Canada, Feb. 15, 1850, and died at her home in Hamilton township, Clare county, Jan. 9, 1928, aged 77 years, 10 months and 25 days. She was married to John Lewis Lyons in the year of 1869, and to this union were born eight children, of whom three of these are left to mourn her home going, the eldest son of Flint, Elmer Lyon s, and daughter of Houghton Lake, Mrs. Emma Spink, and Byron F. Lyons at home; besides two brothers, Lorenzo Sersaw of Gladwin and George Sersaw of Cadillac.

JOHN L. LYONS (1837 - 12 JULY 1910)

 

John Lyons, a Civil war veteran, died at his home in Hamilton township, Clare county, Tuesday, aged 73 years. He was born in Canada. His wife and two children survive him. LEOTA M. (KELLOGG) MARTIN (1 JUNE 1913 - 16 MARCH 1995)

 

Leota M. Martin, 81, of Gladwin, died Thursday, March 16, 1995 at Saginaw St. Luke's Hospital form injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Saginaw. Born June 1, 1913 in Lowell, she was a resident of Gladwin since 1966 when she moved from Tecumseh. Mrs. Martin had been employed by Faraday Manufacturing in Tecumseh as an accountant before retiring in 1966. She was a member of the Harrison VFW 1075 Auxiliary, the Grass Lake CB Club, Veterans Hospital Auxiliary and the Golden Rod Rebekah Lodge 151 of Gladwin, where she was a past noble grand.

   The former Leota Kellogg married Orville (Marty) Martin Dec. 27, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio and he preceded her in death Feb. 22, 1986. Mrs. Martin is survived by 4 nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Max Schultz and John Kellogg.

   Rites were held at 1 p.m. Saturday from the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin chapel by the Harrison VFW Auxiliary and Golden Rod Rebekah Lodge 151 of Gladwin. Burial was in the Skeels Cemetery, Gladwin. Gladwin County Record dated 03-22/1995 Column - 1 Page - 6

 

HARVEY MCCRACKEN (28 JAN 1838 - 6 FEB 1912)

 

   Harvey McCracken died at his home in Hamilton township of gangrene Feb. 6, aged 74 years and 9 days. He was born in Pennslvania Jan. 28, 1838, and was married to Mary McArthur Jan. 18, 1871. They have been residents of Hamilton township about 14 years. Mr. McCracken was a veteran of the Civil war in which he served three years. He was a member of the Lutheran church.

   Services were held at the home at 12 o'clock noon and at the Sherman church at 2 p.m. Feb. 8, by Rev. J. W. Tolly, followed by interment in Sherman cemetery. His wife and four daughters, Madams Emma Stockton and Pearl Cassiday of Hamilton township, and Belle Fillion and Cora Ferguson of Pennsylvania; three son, Thurman and Ward McCracken of Hamilton township, and Rex McCracken of Germfest, Michigan, survive him. WARD H. MCCRACKEN (4 JULY 1894 - 25 MARCH 1979)

 

Ward H. McCracken, 84, of 2915 M-18, Beaverton, died Sunday, March 25, in Saginaw Veterans Hospital following a long illness. Born in Clearfield County, Pa., on July 4, 1894, he came to Gladwin County 25 years ago from Indiana. Mr. McCracken was a veteran of World War I. He and the former Edith Plumber were married December 20, 1921, in Sand Point, Idaho.

   Surviving besides his wife, are 3 daughters, Mrs. Dell (Ella Mae) Gilmore of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. Hobart (Betty) Ivins of Prescott, Ariz. and Mrs. Dorothy Seal of Niles; one son, Harold of South Bend, Ind.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Deborah M. McIntosh, 56, of Gladwin, died April 7, 2006 at MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland of a short illness.
Deborah was born April 5, 1950 to Ray and Beryl (Dunning) McIntosh in Gladwin. She was a homemaker and lived in Gladwin County her whole life.
       
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Michell & Dave Roggow of Gladwin; special friend Jerry Northrup of Gladwin; grandchildren Brittney, Blake & Branden; brothers Jimmie McIntosh of Flint, Vernon McIntosh of Midland, Leonard McIntosh of Gladwin & Tom McIntosh of Coleman; sisters Leola Hude of Gladwin, Ella Doyle of Hemlock, Thernon Robbins of Auburn, Vonnie Leeck of Beaverton, Carole Gower of Bay City & Marsha McIntosh of Coleman; and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; brother, Lyle McIntosh; sisters Nova Jean Adams & Elsie Swinehart.

DUANE G. "DEWEY" MCINTOSH (28 AUG 1937 - 31 JAN 2003)

Duane “Dewey” McIntosh , age 65, of Gladwin passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Midland on Aug. 28, 1937 to the late Earl and Esther (Smith) McIntosh. He married the former Anita Chaffee on March 11, 1960 at Skeels Baptist Church. She survives him. He retired from Brown Machine in 1995. He loved the out of doors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Skeels Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his wife Anita are his children, Cal (Kim Strohkirch) McIntosh of Gladwin, Kurt McIntosh of West Palm Beach, Flor., and Valerie (Pastor Timothy) Lambert of Gladwin; five grandchildren, Rachel, Bethany, Faith and Timothy Lambert, and Sarah Rose McIntosh; and one brother, Robert McIntosh of Midland. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Irene McIntosh.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, 2003 at the Skeels Baptist Church with Rev. George Coon and Rev. Bryan Johnson presiding with burial in Skeels Cemetery. Memorials can be made out to Mid-Michigan Area Hospice of Gladwin.

   A recently returned veteran of Vietnam, Jerry W. McIntosh, 19, died early Friday morning of carbon monoxide in his car on McIntosh Road in Sherman Township. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Skeels Baptist Church. The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in Skeels Cemetery. Born in Sherman Township on August 21, 1946, he had returned from Vietnam in April and was working for Chevrolet Motors in Flint.

EVELYN A. (BURTON) NASH (21 JUNE 1912 – 15 AUG 1981)

 

Evelyn A. Nash, 69, of 3850 N. Clarwin Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday, Aug. 15, in the Bay Medical Center. Born in Coleman on June 21, 1912, she moved to the area in 1965 from Flint. She was a member of the Gladwin Church of the Nazerene. The former Evelyn Burton, she was married to Ralph Nash on September 27, 1927, in Flint.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by 3 sons, Robert of Otisville and Edwin and Buddy of Flint; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Rainbolt of Otter Lake and Mrs. William (Sherry) Nolph of Gladwin; 2 sisters, Mrs. Naomin Garver of Clare and Mrs. Audrey Murray of Flint; one brother, Orville Burton of Flint; 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

 

Services were held today, Wednesday, at 2 p.m. from the Gladwin Church of the Nazerene. The Rev. David Inman officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Mathews Funeral Home. Gladwin County Record dated 8-19/1981 Column – 4 Page – 2.

 

RALPH W. NASH (20 FEB 1904 – 15 SEP 1988)

 

Ralph W. Nash, 84, of 3850 Clarwin Rd., Gladwin, died Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Ardis Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Gladwin County, Feb. 20, 1904, he moved to Flint and returned to Gladwin in 1965. Mr. Nash was retired from General Motors. He was a member of the Gladwin Church of the Nazerene. Mr. Nash and the former Evelyn Burton were married Sept. 27, 1927, in Flint. She preceded him in death Aug. 15, 1981.

 

Surviving are 3 sons, Robert of Gladwin, Edwin and Buddy of Flint; 2 daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Rainbolt of Otter Lake and Mrs. William (Sherry) Nolph of Gladwin; one brother, George of Florida; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A grandson preceded him in death.

Robert W. Nash Jr., 25, of Texas, died Saturday, July 17, in Texas, of injuries sustained in a dam construction accident. He was born in Flint and moved to Texas form Otter Lake. Mr. Nash was the son of Robert Nash Sr. of Davidson and the late Grace (Mather) Nash. Ralph Nash of Gladwin, is his grandfather. SHERRY ELAINE (NASH) NOLPH (20 OCT 1946 - 21 SEP 2005)

Sherry Elaine Nolph, Sherry Elaine Nolph, 58, of Gladwin passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21 at her home. Sherry was born Oct. 20, 1946 in Gladwin to Ralph and Evelyn Burton Nash. She married William Nolph on May 31, 1969 in Harrison. Sherry worked for Ashcrafts/Glen’s Market for 27 years until her illness. She loved to craft, cook and sew.

Surviving are her husband, William; three daughters, Sharice (Joshua) Purman of Saginaw, Shannon Nolph of Twin Lake, and Angela Nolph at home; one grandson, Jonah; in-laws, Charles and Della Nolph of Gladwin; two brothers, Robert Nash and Edwin (Joy) Nash, both of Gladwin; and one sister, Joyce (Robert) Rainbolt of Foley, Alabama. Her parents and one brother, Buddie Nash, predecease her.

Service were held Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Sisson Funeral Home. Pastor David Mead officiated and burial was in Skeels Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Covenant Hospital in Saginaw or to the American Cancer Society.

HOMER G. PARR (17 JULY 1921 - 23 MAY 1994)

 

Homer G. Parr, 72, of 5240 Rose St., Gladwin, died Monday, May 23, 1994, at the Gladwin Nursing Home. Born in Polaski, Tenn. on July 17, 1921, he came to Gladwin County 14 years ago from Wyandotte. Mr. Parr was a packer and chemical manufacturer, and served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of the VFW Post 1075 of Harrison. Mr. Parr married the former Dolores Cheplicki in Ohio May 4, 1942.

   He is survived by his wife; 2 daughters, Patricia Ahigren and husband Ken of Garden City, and Christine Harper and husband Harry of Warren; 1 brother, John of Romulus; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. MINNIE (FOGLE) POLAND (3 MARCH 1860 - 25 AUG 1938)

 

PIONEER RESIDENT DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

 

   Mrs. Minnie Fogle Poland was born in Madison county, Ohio, March 3, 1860. She was married to Christ Poland August 7, 1878, and to them were born eight children, two of whom preceded her in death. In 1898 she with her husband, came to Michigan and settled in Gladwin County. She was left a widow in 1907, and since that time lived alone on M-18, except for the last few winters when she spent her time with her children. On Wednesday morning, August 24, she was taken seriously ill, soon lapsed into unconsciousness and died the following day at 4:30. Mrs. Poland was a loving mother and cheerful neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

   Funeral services were held Saturday at the Skeels Baptist church with Rev. A. J. Hoolsema preaching the sermon. Interment at the Skeels cemetery. Surviving are her children, Jess and Frank Poland, Mrs. Ellen Sine and Mrs. Cora Shufelt, all of Midland, Mrs. Laura Anderson of Bay City and Mrs. Nona Cuddie of Gladwin, 27 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, besides many friends. LIBBIE M. (CAMPBELL) SANDERS (3 JAN 1894 - 13 JULY 1985)

 

Libbie M. Sanders, 91, of Durand and formerly of Gladwin, died Saturday, July 13, in the Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility in Corunna, after a short illness. Born in Potters County, Pa., Jan. 3, 1894, she had spent most of her life in Gladwin County. The former Libbie Campbell, she was married to Charles VanHorn April 7, 1912, in Gladwin. He died March 26, 1952. She then married Earl Sanders May 2, 1959, in Clare. He preceded her in death Oct. 1, 1973.

   Surviving are one son, Norman of Durand; 3 daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Florence) Hildebrandt of Durand, Mrs. Richard (Doris) Smith of Newaygo and Mrs. Willard (Opal) Schliter of Walled Lake; one step-son, Russ Sanders of Clare; 3 step-daughters, Mrs. Grace Coats and Mrs. Edith Newman of Clare and Mrs. Helen Sims of Madina, Ill.; one brother, Floyd of Clare; 21 grandchildren and several great and great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were a daughter, Hazel Anderson in 1973 and a son, Ora Van Horn in 1975.

Esther Seipke, 82, of Maple Manor, Gladwin, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 1984, following an auto accident.

 

She was born Oct. 27, 1901, in Sherman Township, Gladwin County. She was a lifetime resident of Gladwin and member of the Skeels Baptist Church. The former Esther Waeiss married Toney Seipke, June 16, 1921, in Gladwin. He died Dec 9, 1939.

 

She leaves her son, Emil N. Seipke of Mt. Clemens, daughters, Mrs. J.W. (Violet) Rea of Midland and Irene E. Weaver of Clarkston; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren; brother, Emil Waeiss of Gladwin; and sisters, Evelyn Westwood of Sandusky, Eleanor LaDuke of Tucson, Ariz., and Ethel Schultz of Rosevi1le.

 

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Skeels Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Skeels Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hall Funeral Home, Gladwin Chapel, after 5 p.m. Saturday, until 11 am. Monday and at the church from noon until time of service.

Mrs. Mable Sersaw, 79, of Sherman Township, died Monday, December 6, at Ogemaw Valley Medical Service, following an illness of five months. Born in Detroit, April 21, 1892, she came to Gladwin County 36 years ago. The former Mable Burmeister, she was married to John Sersaw April 21, 1952, in Clare County.

   Survivors are her husband, John; and two brothers, Harold and Ervin Burmeister, both of Gladwin. Services were held today (Wednesday), at 2:00 p.m. at the Hall Funeral Home with the Rev. OTTO A. SHERMAN (9 FEB 1914 - 26 OCT 2001) 

Otto A. Sherman, 87, of Gladwin, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 at the Gladwin Pines Nursing Home following a short illness. Born Feb. 9, 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Martin and Caroline (Golka) Sherman. Otto married Iva Cuddie, Nov. 23, 1935 at Oberlin Lutheran Church. He retired in 1999 from dairy farming and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

Beside his wife he is survived by three sons, Donald and wife Barbara, Martin, and Altamer and wife Robyn, all of Gladwin; one daughter, Augusta and husband Edward Etelamaki of Midland; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister-in-law, Alma Sherman of Gladwin. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Denwith and Augusta Borrusch; and three brothers, Bill, Ernest, and Edward.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Verity officiating. Burial was in Skeels Cemetery. Memorials may be made out to Our Savior Lutheran Church. The Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin was in charge of the arrangements.

PAUL A. SWINEHART, JR (14 JUNE 1944 - 08 JULY 1998)

 

Paul A. Swinehart, Jr., 54, of Gladwin, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Saginaw after a long illness. Born June 14, 1944 in Flint, he lived in Gladwin County for 30 years and previously lived in Flint. Paul married Elsie (McIntosh), Dec. 21, 1964 in Flint. He was retired as a mechanic in 1993 after 30 years, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

   Besides his wife he is survived by his mother, Mary Swinehart of Sterling; five brothers, Clarence of Idaho, Jerald of Fairgrove, Gary of California, Ben of Gladwin, and Herb of Shepard; one sister, Edith Palmateer of Genesee and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Sr. in 1976.

ERWIN EDWIN TOVEY (12 MARCH 1901 - 3 APRIL 1980)

Erwin E. Tovey, 79, of 5308 Jerry St., Gladwin, died Thursday, April 3, in the Midland Hospital Center. Born in Larkin Township, Midland County, on March 12, 1901, he came to Gladwin County in 1963 from Bay City. Mr. Tovey retired in 1962 as an oxtruder operator for Dow Chemical Co. He was a veteran of World War II. He and the former Dorothy Acker were married November 20, 1943, in Grand Rapids. Besides his wife, he is survived by one brother, William of Prudenville. PETER TRESLER (16 JAN 1837 - 10 MAY 1925)

 

Peter Tresler, pioneer resident of Sherman township, passed away at his home Sunday morning, May 10, after an illness of several months, aged 88 years, 3 months and 6 days. Mr. Tresler was born January 16, 1837, in Hasslach, Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1851, and settled in New York state with his father and brother John, who have preceded him in death.

   He worked on farms in New York state until 1861, when he came to Michigan and worked in the lumber woods near Midland and Edenville until 1863, when he was called back to New York state on account of his father's illness and death, after which he went to Washington, D.C., where he enlisted in the Second regiment District of Columbia, Co. K. his company being President Lincoln's bodyguard for six months, when they petitioned the president to go to the front, which was granted. He was at Fort Stevens when Lee was within three miles of Washington, and survived the war without a wound, although in many hot skirmishes, and was discharged Sept. 12, 1865, when he went to Fort Leavenworth for about three months and then returned to Michigan and settled in Clare county, residing there until 1881, when he came to Gladwin county where he has since lived.

   He was married in 1871 to Rachel Smith, to whom were born three children who have all preceded him in death. Rachel dying in 1880. He was married the second time to Liddie Bronson Duncan in 1891. To them was born one boy, Wellington, who with his mother survives. Mr. Tresler was well known among the different orders to which he belonged, being a member of the Gladwin lodge F. & A.M. No. 397, Gladwin lodge No. 177, I.O.O.F., Gladwin Rebekah lodge No. 151, and Sherman Grange No. 1229. He was a resident of Sherman township before it was separate from Butman township and held the office of justice of the peace. After Sherman township was organized he was elected as the first director of school district No. 1, which office he held for many years, and also filled township offices.

   Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Skeels church, Rev. J. W. Tolly officiating, assisted by Rev. Fields, and interment took place in the Sherman cemetery near by with Masonic rites, Clarence M. Pike, past master of Gladwin lodge F. & A.M., delivering the ritualistic service. A large number of Gladwin Masons were present. The pallbearers were David Hawken, F. E. Myers, Eugene and Isaac Foster, Frank L. Prindle and Robert Croskery.    Arthur Tucker, son of James Tucker of Sherman, age 24 years and 3 months, died July 9 at the U.S. Naval hospital on Mare Island, Cal., of cerebal gumnata. He was born in Churabusco, Indiana. His body was shipped by express from Mare Island July 11, and arrived here Monday noon, and was taken to Sherman Wednesday. Arthur was one of Sherman township's promising young men, and entered the U.S. navy April 7, 1906, to serve four years. He was expected home this fail.    Van Horn---Barbara Louise Van Horn, wife of George Van Horn, died at her home in Sherman township, April 17, 1919, aged 63 years, five months and nine days. She was born in Virginia Nov. 8, 1855. The family settled on a farm in Sherman township, where they have lived 27 years. She is survived by her husband, four sons and two daughters. Her son, Amos Van Horn, is in military service in France. Funeral services were held at Skeels church Sunday afternoon, April 20, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. J. W. Tolly. Burial in Sherman cemetery. Mrs. Alice K. Waeiss, 68, died suddenly Thursday, July 5, at her Sherman Township home. Born November 24, 1904, in Gladwin County she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Dady. She and Affen Waeiss were married August 15, 1925, in Gladwin, and he preceded her in death February 2, 1968. They lived in Detroit, returning here in 1961.

   Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Jean) Kleiss, Gladwin, and Mrs. George (Betty) Roughley of Detroit; 2 sons, Robert of Almont and Richard of Indianapolis, Ind.; 1 sister, Mrs. Etta Aupperle of Detroit; and 1 brother, Samuel Dady of Sterling Heights; and 12 grandchildren.

Kenneth E. Waeiss, 78, of Prudenville and formerly of Gladwin, died Saturday, June 22, 1996 at Tolfree Memorial Hospital in West Branch. Born Feb. 17, 1918 in Detroit, he came to Gladwin County in 1957 and had a farm on Renas Rd. Mr. Waeiss is a veteran of World War II. He married Bernadine Jan. 3, 1942 in Guthery, Okla. and she preceded him in death June 27, 1985.

   Surviving are one uncle, Emil and Gloria Waeiss of Gladwin; 2 aunts, Eleanor LaDuke of Tuscon, Ariz. and Evelyn Woodard of Sandusky; one niece, Sandy Sims of Shelby Township; and one nephew, Timothy Waeiss of St. Clair Shores. He was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton Waeiss.

AUGUSTA (BLOCK) WEGNER (9 JUNE 1880 - 7 SEP 1971)

Mrs. Augusta Wegner, 91, of Comstock Park, died in Grand Rapids, Tuesday, Sept. 7, following a long illness. Born in Poland, June 9, 1880, she came to the United States in 1896, and to Gladwin County in 1906. She was married to Carl Peck, Emil Block, and Henry Wegner, all of whom preceded her in death. Mrs. Wegner lived in Sherman Township until 1946 when she moved to Detroit where she lived until 1968, going from there to Comstock Park to make her home with her daughter.

   Survivors are four sons, Walter and Harry Peck of Gladwin, Herman Peck of Cleveland, and Charles Peck of St. Clair Shores; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Stockton of Levelland, Tex., Mrs. Richard (Helen) Hardenburger of Comstock Park, and Mrs. Sherril (Ethel) Sturgill of San Francisco, Calif.; 24 grandchildren 24 great grandchildren.

   Danny Ervin Willis died at birth at the Clare Osteopathic Hospital on Monday, Nov. 8. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Willis, of Gladwin; and five brothers and one sister, Robert, Michael, Billie, Tony, Randy and Melody.

ERVIN C. WILLIS (4 MARCH 1891 - 14 APRIL 1971)

Ervin C. Willis, 80, of Skeels, died this morning Wednesday, April 14, in a rest home at Farwell. A farmer until his retirement in 1959, Mr. Willis made his home, the past several years, with his daughter, Mrs. Harry Cooper at Skeels. Born in Samara, Mich., March 4, 1891, he had been a resident of Gladwin County since he was 16 years of age. He and the former Miss Jennie Van Horn were married in Gladwin June 6, 1912. She preceded him in death January 11, 1962.

   Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Ruth Cooper; five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mathews Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy Carl Willis, 59, of McBain and formerly of Gladwin, died July 26, 2001 at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac. Born Nov. 9, 1941 in Gladwin, he was the son of Walter and Ineda (Ansted) Willis. He had worked as an operator on the pipelines since he was 18 years old. He had also farmed in the Gladwin and Marion areas and retired in 1994 due to illness. LeRoy enjoyed fishing and snowmobling and hunting. Surviving are one daughter; Tammy and husband Scott Ryker of Alger; two sons, Scott and wife Nadine of Corsicanna, Texas and Steve and wife Deb of Marion; six grandchildren; and one brother, Ervin and wife Bonnie of Gladwin. Gerald "Jerry" Woodard, 66, of rural Gladwin, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999 at his home. Born April 21, 1932 in Port Huron, he was the son of Gordon V. and Lillian (Roe) Woodard. He resided in Gladwin County since 1980, and previously lived in Flint. He retired from Buick of Flint with 30 years of employment. Jerry married Betty Jane Kimball, Jan. 12, 1953 in Flint. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a member and past commander of the VFW Post 1075, Harrison.

   Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Tina Woodard and Lisa Parsons, both of Gladwin; three sons, Mike and wife Sue, and Jeff and wife Kathy, all of Flint, and Gerald and wife Debby of Montrose; one brother, Russell and wife Kathryn of Flint; two sisters, Erma Marthen of Port Huron, and Gertrude and husband Jerry Jones of Gladwin; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Patrick; one brother, Jack; and two sisters.

   Services were held Thursday at Stocking Funeral Home in Harrison with officers, members, and the VFW Post 1075 Chaplain Mortimer Shea conducting full military honors. MRS. MARTHA WYKOFF (15 AUG 1840 - 17 APRIL 1919)

 

   Wykoff---Mrs. Martha Wykoff died at the home of her son, Arthur Wykoff, in Hamilton township April 17, 1919. She was born in Pennslyvania Aug. 15, 1840, and has been a resident of Hamilton 36 years. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Vernie Garrity, Mrs. William Looker, Mrs. James Reid, Mrs. Sam McLain; two sons, Arthur and Orson Wykoff.

   Services were held at the Skeels church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. W. Tolly. Buried in Sherman cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 04-24/1919 Column - 5 Page – 4

 

DELMAR J. (DEL) YEAGER (22 SEP 1909 – 10 FEB 1988)

 

Delmar J. (Del) Yeager, 78, of 11787 Forest Rd., Gladwin, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 10, St. Mary’s Hospital, Saginaw, after a heart attack. Born in Gladwin Township Sept. 22, 1909, he had spent most of his life in the county. He was a track foreman for the C & O Railroad and retired in 1975. Mr. Yeager was a member of the Gladwin Masonic Lodge 397 F& AM, the Gladwin Fraternal Order of Eagles 3292, the Order of Eastern Star, the Shriners and a past member of the Gladwin I.O.O.F. Lodge and Lions Club.

 

Mr. Yeager and the former Ruby Gilkerson were married Aug. 29, 1979, in Gladwin. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Keith of Edmore; 2 daughters, Mrs. Jess (Lota) Harding of Skeels and Mrs. Jim (Geraldine) Carper of Gladwin; one brother, Denver of Prudenville; one sister, Jean Leeck of Gladwin; 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Louisa Near, 2nd wife, Violet Tucker, a son, Kenneth and one grandson.

 

Services were held Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Sisson-Mathews Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Briggs officiated and burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. An Eagle’s memorial service was held Friday at 7 p.m. and a Masonic service at 9 p.m. Gladwin County Record dated 2-17/1988 Column – 2 Page – 2.

M. LOUISA (NEAR) YEAGER (10 MAY 1908 - 17 JUNE 1972)

Mrs. M. Louisa Yeager, 64, died at her home at 11787 Forest Road, Gladwin, Saturday, June 17. Born May 10, 1908, in Sherman Township, she had been a lifetime resident of the Skeels area. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Near. The former Louisa Near and Delmar Yeager were married April 14, 1932, in Gladwin. Mrs. Yeager was a member and past matron of White Clover Chapter No. 84, Order of the Eastern Star, the Past Matrons Club, and a member and past noble grand of the Golden Rod Rebekahs, and past Noble Grand Club.

   Surviving are her husband, Delmar of Gladwin; two daughters, Mrs. Jess (Lota) Harding and Mrs. James (Jerry) Carper, both of Gladwin; one son, Keith of Charlotte; a sister, Mrs. Violet Adams of Gladwin; a brother, Charles Near of Gladwin; and five grandchildren. A son, Kenneth, preceded her in death in 1934.

   Services were held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl M. Briggs officiating. O.E.S. and Rebekah memorial services were held Monday evening. Burial was in the Skeels Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 06-21/1972 Column - 5 Page - 2
