Grand Traverse County was formed on April 7, 1851, from the area formerly known as Omeena. The first county seat was Boardman's Mills, which is now part of Traverse City.
Grand Traverse County is known for it vineyards, cherry orchards, festivals, and sandy Lake Michigan beaches. It is also the home the the Interlochen Center of the Arts.
