Abbott, Horace Porter III
Died December 3, 1999
EAST LELAND - Horace Porter Abbott III, 87, of East Leland, died Friday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
Born Sept. 17, 1912, in Everett, Mass., he was the son of Horace Porter Abbott II and Beatrice (Sauer) Abbott. On Sept. 22, 1937, he married Barbara Ann
Trueblood.
He and his wife Barbara lived in Cambridge, Mass., then moved to Baltimore, Md., then to Winchester, Mass., and, finally, to Old Greenwich, Conn., where they lived for 27 years. In 1977 they moved to East Leland.
Horace was an extremely talented engineer who loved clock repairing and all sorts of mechanical projects. He was very active in many community activities. He was a member of the fire board in Leland and of the zoning board of appeals in Leland Township. Horace was a longtime supporter of WIAA Interlochen Public Radio and the Leelanau Historical Society.
He was a graduate of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. He retired as a senior planner at Lever Bros.' headquarters in New York.
Survivors include five children, Abigail Panettiere, H. Porter Abbot IV, Barbara Abbott, Rebecca Abbott, and Nathaniel Abbott; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Horace was preceded in death by his wife, on Nov. 12, 1995, and a brother, Kenyon Taylor Abbott.
A memorial service will be announce next summer.
Memorials may be directed to WIAA Interlochen Public Radio, Leelanau Historical Society, or Leelanau Memorial Care Center.

TRAVERSE CITY —
Edith Goff Ackerman, 88, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord on Jan. 24,
2013.
She is survived by her children, Vernon (Kathleen) Ackerman, Linda (Keith)
Christopher, and Janet (Kermet) Russell Sensenbaugh.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. The time and date will be

HORTON — Paul
Arrow Ahlstrom, 71, of Horton, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Cherry Hill
Haven, Traverse City. Paul was born on Feb. 23, 1941, to Warren and A. Jayne
Ahlstrom. Paul taught biology for over 40 years at Hanover-Horton High School,
affecting the lives of many students with his tough classes and crazy antics. He
also owned a garage door business for many years.
Paul loved God and he loved people. He liked a seat at the family table of any
local restaurant, a roaring campfire and a tractor show with friends. Paul
enjoyed his time in Florida each Christmas.
Paul was a Gideon and a member of Ganson Street Baptist Church for many years.
Paul is survived by Colleen, his wife of 47 years; his children, Troy Ahlstrom (Sibel),
of Traverse City, Heather Jose (Larry), of Lake Isabella, and Josh Ahlstrom
(Brooke), of Noblesville, Ind. He was loved by his six grandchildren, Sydney,
Lily, Ty, Kellen, Cade and Ansley.
The family would like to thank Johnny and Jerome for their amazing love and care
as well as Hospice of Michigan and Cherry Hill Haven. Because of you, Paul
enjoyed every day.
An informal gathering with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday,
Jan. 31, 2013, at the Ganson Street Baptist Church, Jackson. A celebration of
Paul's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at the Ganson Street
Baptist Church, Jackson.

Died December 4, 1999
KEWADIN - Florine Alberts, 67, died Saturday at her home in Kewadin.
Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Elk Rapids, she was the daughter of Percy and Louise (Williams) Anderson. She married Francis "Proctor" Shananaquet who later preceded her in death. Florine later married Wilmer Alberts Sr. who also preceded her in death.
A resident of the Elk Rapids area her entire life, Florine worked at NISH-NAH-BEE Industries in Traverse City as a supervisor/quality control. She was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Chippewa and Ottawa Indians and of the Kewadin Indian Mission Church. Florine enjoyed attending church, reading the Bible and music. She was a very devoted Christian. Florine loved the Lord with all her heart and, having seen His face, her sweet spirit will soar for eternity.
Survivors include four daughters, Theresa Shananaquet of Kewadin, Mary (Earl) Pelcher of Mount Pleasant, Patricia (Walter "Bob") Poertner of Traverse City, and Melissa Alberts of Kewadin; three sons, Michael (Shirley) Shananaquet of Traverse City, Martin (Karen) Shananaquet of Kewadin, and Wilmer Alberts Jr. of Kewadin; six brothers, Gerald Anderson of Peshawbetown, Percy "Chief" Anderson Jr. of Elk Rapids, Albert Anderson of Kewadin, Robert Anderson of Elk Rapids, Russell Anderson of Elk Rapids, and Steve (Audry) Anderson of Lansing; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Florine was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and two brothers, David and Edward Anderson.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday at Kewadin Indian Mission Church; a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. each evening at the church.
Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elk Rapids United Methodist Church; the Rev. Tom John and the Rev. Delford Whitecrow will officiate.
Burial will take place in Kewadin Indian Mission Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Kewadin Indian Mission Church.
Arrangements are by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Albrecht, James Leonard
TRAVERSE
CITY — James Leonard Albrecht, 70, of Traverse City, passed away suddenly on
Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving
family. James was born on Sept. 25, 1942, in Macomb County, to the late Russel
Otis and Margaret Magdalina (Burg) Albrecht.
He married Nancy Jean Romack on Oct. 6, 1962, in Saginaw. Together they raised
four wonderful children.
James enjoyed euchre, crossword puzzles, suduko, reading, cooking and trains.
Most importantly, James was a dedicated father and patient grandfather, spending
many hours at sporting events and collecting mementos for them.
Surviving James are his wife, Nancy; children, James (Anna) Albrecht, of
Traverse City, Dawn (Phil) Sloboda, of Valparaiso, Ind., Jeffrey (Barbara)
Albrecht, of Clover, S.C., and Danna (Chris) Widmar, of Cary, N.C.;
grandchildren, Allie, Summer, Joseph, Rebecca, Quentin, Justin, Austin, Madison,
Elana and Jake; sisters, Betty Ann (Dan) Vollmar and Beverly Holen; as well as
many other loving family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the
Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at the Feast of Victory Lutheran Church. Pastor James
Helman will serve as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American
Cancer Society or Feast of Victory Lutheran Church.

Anderson, Edward Thomas 'Eddie'
TRAVERSE CITY — Edward Thomas
"Eddie" Anderson, 41, of Traverse City, died Sunday morning, Jan. 27,
2013, at Munson Medical Center following a brief illness. Born Sept. 30, 1971,
in Leelanau County, he was the son of Thomas J. and Victoria M. (Chippewa)
Anderson.
Eddie was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
For a number of years, Eddie worked as a short order cook, working in various
restaurants throughout the Grand Traverse area.
Eddie will fondly be remembered for his free-spirited, outgoing personality, his
great people skills and his giving ways. He will be sorely missed by his family
and many friends.
He is survived by his father, Thomas J. "Tom" Anderson, of Traverse
City; siblings, Joanne (Scott) Winowiecki, of Traverse City, Lisa (Joe) Cox, of
Waterford, and Tom Anderson, of Tempe, Ariz.; six nieces and nephews, Craig,
Kellen, Patrick, Isabel, Thomas and John; along with aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Victoria M. "Vicki" Anderson;
and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Memorial services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday,
Feb. 1, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Cremation has taken place, per Eddie's request.
In remembrance of Eddie, memorial contributions may be directed to the charity
of choice.

ELK RAPIDS - Roger W. Anderson, 83, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born June 15, 1916, in Rattlerun, he was the son of Fredrick and Lydia (Covell) Anderson. On March 4, 1994, in Homosassa, Fla., he married Marion
Forston.
Roger served in the U.S. Army during World War II. An electrical engineer, he worked for General Motors Corp. in Utica until he retired in 1978. He moved from St. Clair Shores to Elk Rapids in 1978 and spent his winters in Homosassa. Roger was a member of Williamsburg Senior Citizens, Sugarmill Woods Country Club in Homosassa, Elk Rapids Golf Club and Grosse Pointe Optimists Club. He attended Elk Rapids United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marion, of Elk Rapids; a daughter, Joan (William) Kremer of Sterling Heights; three sons, Arthur (Gretchen) Anderson of Almont, Donald (Carol) Anderson of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Gregory Anderson of Wyoming, Mich.; two step daughters, Joanne (John) Kreag of Kewadin and Jacqueline (John) Holdsworth-Kershaw of Monroe; two step sons, William (Eleanor) Holdsworth of Kewadin and Robert (Louise) Holdsworth of Kewadin; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon (Venita) Anderson of Toledo, Ohio.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Duane, and his first wife, Frances in 1989.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Elk Rapids United Methodist Church; the Rev. Tom Pier-Fitzgerald will officiate.
Burial will be in Princess Hill Cemetery in Barrington, R.I.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society, or to one's choice.
