Carl Herman Babcock
SHOW LOW, Ariz. — Carl Herman
Babcock, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at
the Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Show Low, Ariz., from
complications of Parkinson's and congestive heart disease. He was 88-years-old.
Carl was born in Alma to his parents, the late Frederick Coleman and Lillian May
(Markum) Babcock.
Carl spent his working career as a skilled craftsman and painter in Michigan and
Arizona until his retirement in 1999, after which he and his wife moved to Show
Low, Ariz.
Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years. He was a gentleman
of generous spirit and a sense of humor, had a steady, loving gaze and sweet
smile, and always ready with a "corny" joke, yet well respected among
his peers as a man who believed "the quality of the man shows in the
quality of his work".
Carl is survived by his wife, Shirley Anne Babcock, of Show Low, Ariz.; four
daughters, Mona Lucille Moxley, of Mena, Ark., Janice Louise Timmer, of
Hudsonville, Bethany Ruth Purcell, of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Carla Annette
Evans, of Interlochen; two sons, Eric Carl Babcock, of Buckley, and Steven
Wesley Babcock, of Arizona City, Ariz.; and two stepsons, Richard Keith Deskins,
of Farmington, and Matthew Owen O'Neal, of Mt. Clemens. Carl is also survived by
24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gala (Shann) Babcock; two daughters,
Carolyn Joy Fuller and Gala Colleen VanTil; and two sons, Jeffery Mark Babcock
and Jonathan David Babcock.
A special memorial service for Carl will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at the
Campbell Stocking Family Funeral Home, 408 W. Main Street, Farwell, MI; (989)
588-4541. Family visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m., with a memorial service
at 11 a.m.
The Babcock family is thankful for all the expressions of sympathy they have
received from their community of friends and are especially grateful for all of
the prayers offered up on their behalf.

Leora M. Bailey
Died December 23, 1999
BELLAIRE - Leora M. Bailey, 94, of Bellaire, died Thursday at Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix.
Born May 1, 1905, in Bellaire, she was the daughter of William M. and Louise (Kettler) Robinson. On Nov. 23, 1923, in East Jordan, she married Leonard C. Bailey, who preceded her in death in 1972.
Leora served the citizens of Antrim County for 25 years as the county treasurer and 13 years as the deputy treasurer, retiring in 1968. She was a past president of the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility Auxiliary in Bellaire and a charter member of the Bellaire Business and Professional Women's Club. Leora was a 1923 graduate of Bellaire High School and served on the board of education of the Bellaire schools for nine years. She attended Ferris State University and was a life member of the Ferris Golden Eagles Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Natalie J. Hansen of Bellaire; two brothers, William (Stick) Robinson of Bellaire and Ford (Alberta) Robinson of Rapid City; a sister, Gretchen Marriage of Rapid City; five grandchildren, Leora VanSice of Bellaire, David (Kim) VanSice of Bellaire, Craig (Debbie) VanSice of Tucson, Ariz., Sheryl Ebert of Birmingham, Ala. and Chip (Laura) Hansen of East Jordan; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine VanSice; two sisters, Betty Trevan and Elnora Eiserman; and a brother, Howard Thomas.
Graveside memorial services at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire will be scheduled in the spring with details to be announced by the family.
The family suggests memorials to the "Hansen Scholarship," care of the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, 115 Park Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of the Mortensen Funeral Homes.

TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy Muriel Baker, 87, a third generation physician, died Friday at Bortz Health Care.
Born Sept. 11, 1911, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Dr. Arthur Leo and Mina A. (Cook) Baker. On Aug. 12, 1938, In Michigan she married Gordon F. Glair, D.D.S.
Her professional experience included an internship at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon from 1938-39. She served as a physician at Newberry and Traverse City state hospitals from 1943-50, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tomah, Wis., from 1951-53, and as resident physician at Winter VA Hospital in Topeka, Kan., from 1953-55. Dorothy worked as a psychiatrist at Sheridan, Wyo., from 1955-56 and at Battle Creek from 1956-60. She was a staff psychologist at Mental Hygiene Clinic, VA Hospital, in Allen Park from 1960-74.
Dorothy was a fellow of Menninger School of Psychiatry and a member of the American Psychiatric Assoc., the American Medical Assoc., the Michigan Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, and Alpha Epsilen Iota.
In addition to being a physician, she was an artist, poet, lover of classical music and all the arts, swimmer, good friend and humanitarian.
She spent most of her life in Traverse City and moved from Traverse City to Newberry and back. She retired from the Traverse City state hospital on Dec. 31, 1974.
Survivors include her children, Allegra Lael of Grawn and John Baker of Grayling; three grandchildren, Jon M. Lunand Ben and Britini Baker; and a great-grandchild, Mika Noel Luland.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, Gordon F. Glair, her parents, and a brother, Leo Arthur Baker.
No services are planned at this time.

Arthur Junior Baldwin

PESHAWBESTOWN - Arthur Junior Baldwin, 68, of Peshawbestown, died Wednesday at his home.
Born Sept. 20, 1931, in Leelanau County, he was the son of William and Margaret Agnes (Sands) Baldwin. On June 24, 1972, in Peshawbestown, he married the former Catherine C. Harris, who survives.
Arthur served in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Arthur was a member of Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church and Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
Besides his wife, he is survived by seven stepchildren, George Yannott, Jr., Sandra Sue Yannott, Florine Marie Yannott - all of Suttons Bay, Richard Arnold Yannott-Hart of Grand Rapids; Loi Ellen Chambers of Suttons Bay and Gail Lynn Yannott-Woods of Grand Rapids; a brother, Lavern Scott of Thompsonville; a sister, Mary Zubler of Houston; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a nephew.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Friends may also call after 4 p.m. Sunday at the Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Andrew G. Buvala officiating. Burial will be in Kateri Tekakwitha Cemetery.

Lilly Barhitte
Died November 28, 1999
HONOR - Lilly Barhitte, 74, of Honor, went to be with her Lord Sunday evening.
Born March 14, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wis., she was the daughter of David and Elsie Palmer. She moved to Ludington at the age of eight.
On June 28, 1945, in Muskegon, she married Ken Barhitte.
Lilly loved her home, friends and flowers. She always had something good to say about everyone. She liked to play cards, tell funny stories and just plain enjoy life to the fullest.
Survivors include her husband, Ken; two children, Lilly Marlene McPherson and Allen (Sandra) Barhitte; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carrie Ann, and a grandson, Mark Allen.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Walburn Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

TRAVERSE CITY - Jerome K. Barry, 72, died Monday at Munson Medical Center.
Born March 13, 1927, on the family farm in Livingston County, he was the son of Jerome and Leona (Croteau) Barry.
Jerome served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Michigan State University and graduated from law school at the University of Detroit. A longtime attorney, his law office was located in Clarkston. Jerome was a former resident of Pontiac and Waterford. He lived in Traverse City for the last ten years where he attended Immaculate Conception Church and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2180
Survivors include eight children, three sisters, two brothers, and 23 grandchildren.
Jerome was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Barry, on Jan. 27, 1990, a twin brother, James, a brother, Richard, a sister, Jeanie, and a grandson, Arthur.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial Mass at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes is being planned.
Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Williamston.
Memorials may be directed to Munson Medical Center.

MRS. LUCY BARTAK DEAD
Aged Pioneer Passed Away Last Night After Long Illness - Came Here in 1857
Mrs. Lucy Bartak, wife of W. Bartak, died at 10 o'clock last night at the home of Charles Wilhelm, at the advanced age of 67 years. she has been in very poor health since last November, and her death was not unexpected.
Mrs. Wilhelm was one of the very early pioneers of the city. She was born in Bohemia in 1834, and came to the United States in 1856. With her husband she came west, spending about a year in Chicago, and removed here the year following, where she has ever since resided.
Four children survive her, all of whom reside in this city. They are Mrs. Frank Votruba, A. W. Bartak, Mrs. Charles Wilhelm and Mrs. J. A. McMance. Her husband is also living.
The funeral will be held from the residence of Charles Wilhelm Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of H. L. Carter. Rev. D. Cochlin will conduct the service.

ANOTHER PIONEER DEAD
August Bayue died Sunday of appendicitis at his home near Shetland at the age of 42 years, two months. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the German Lutheran church with interment in the cemetery at Good Harbor.
Deceased was born in Prussia, January 30, 1859, and at the age of thirteen came to this country with his parents. Upon their arrival in this country, they came directly to Solon, where he lived until his marriage to Miss Rosalena Kessel, which occurred in 1885. Since his residence in Cleveland township, he has held several important and responsible offices such as supervisor, township clerk, township treasurer and school assessor. Genial, trustworthy and industrious, he was beloved by all who knew him.
Besides a host of friends, he leaves an aged mother, six sisters, two brothers, a widow and two sons to mourn his loss.

DEATH OF A PIONEER
John M. Benjamin of Cedar Run Passed Away Last Evening - He Resided in This Region for 36 Years
John M. Benjamin, one of the early pioneers of the Grand Traverse region, died last evening at 6 o'clock at his home near Cedar Run, of dropsy of the heart, at the age of 63 years. The funeral will be held from the Cedar Run chapel tomorrow at 1 o'clock. Rev. J. Pennington officiating, and the body will be interred in the Long Lake Cemetery.
Deceased was born in New York, and afterward removed to Saginaw, from which place he removed to the farm near Cedar Run, which he occupied till the time of his death, with the exception of a short residence in this city. He has been in this region for the past 36 years and was universally respected. A very large circle of friends will mourn his loss and expend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
Besides his widow the deceased leaves four children, Will, whose location is now not known, JOhn G., of Grand rapids and George of this city and Mrs. Josie Biggs, who lives near the former home of the deceased.
Mr. Benjamin has been very low for some time, and his death, though not unexpected will nevertheless be deeply mourned.

PIONEER LAID TO REST
John M. Benjamin
The funeral of John M. Benjamin was held yesterday afternoon at the Cedar Run chapel, and was attended by a large number of the friends of the deceased, a number coming from this city. The chapel could not hold all who had come to pay a last tribute of respect to the departed.
The pall bearers were chosen from the old friends of the pioneer. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. Pennington of this city, for many years a friends of the departed. The body was interred in the cemetery at Long Lake.

Bernson, Lee Earl
TRAVERSE CITY — Lee Earl Bernson,
72, of Traverse City, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, after a 17-year battle with
carcinoid neuroendocrine tumor cancer.
He was born to the late Erling and Naomi Bernson, Jan. 5, 1941, in Alpena. Lee
graduated from Alpena High School and received a BS in Civil Engineering from
Michigan Technological University in 1965. That same year he married his wife of
47 years, Arleta (Evans) Bernson, and they lived together in Denver, Colo.,
before relocating to Cadillac, then to Greenville, and finally to Traverse City
after he and Arleta retired in 1997. Lee and Arleta also enjoyed winters in
Steamboat Springs, Colo., after retirement.
Lee was a registered professional engineer in both the State of Colorado and
Michigan and worked for the Colorado Highway Department prior to moving back to
Michigan where, after a brief stint in a concrete business, he was
co-owner/operator of a Christmas tree and nursery stock operation, until his
retirement.
While the majority of his career was not in engineering, Lee was a longtime
supporter of the College of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan
Technological University where he was a member of the Academy of Civil and
Environmental Engineers. His engineering mind was always at work, as evidenced
by his ability to create, build and fix anything and everything. Lee enjoyed the
outdoors and loved to hunt, fish, ski, make maple syrup and drive his tractor.
He was also an accomplished woodturner and private pilot. Lee loved God and
adored his grandchildren.
Lee is survived by his wife, Arleta; and two children and their spouses, Heather
Force (Shane) of Spring Lake, and Zach Bernson (Michelle) of Seattle. He is also
survived by four grandchildren, Calvin and Naomi Force, and Amelia and Nathan
Bernson. In addition, surviving him are a brother, Roy (Janet); and sister,
Elaine Kingsbury; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City on
Friday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Becky Chamberlain and Rev. Dr. Jerry Jones
officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Lee's memory or a donation to the Neuroendocrine Tumor Innovation Fund, Ochsner

MANISTEE - Beatrice M. Bobian, 81, of Manistee, died Thursday.
Bea was born May 18, 1918, in Plainfield, NJ. She married Artin Bobian on April 21, 1945, in Plainfield. He preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1989.
She is survived by daughters, Judy (Dennis) Hoxsie of Williamsburg and Jane (Bob) Sievert of Manistee; son, Dr. Richard (Amy) Bobian of Bear Lake; grandchildren, Elise and Michael Bobian of Bear Lake, Libby and Scott Schulz of San Diego and Ali Hoxsie of Los Angeles; a brother, Arthur Eyring of Atlanta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date.
The family suggests those wishing to remember Bea consider a gift to either Munson Hospice or the Leukemia Society of America.

TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret G. Boldt, 94, of Traverse City, died Sunday at the home of her daughter.
Born Oct. 8, 1905 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Michael and Rose (Brezina) Malucky. On Aug. 11, 1926, in Cleveland, she married Herbert G. Boldt who preceded her in death in 1973. She was also preceded in death by two sisters.
Margaret was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and a former member of the Traverse City Senior Center.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Sullivan of Traverse City, a son, Herbert (Mary) Boldt of East Tawas, 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City; a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church; Father William Lipscomb will serve as celebrant.
Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.

Patsy Brady

Patsy Brady was born March 6, 1944, to the late Roy and Kay (Sparks) Furches in
Loudon, Tenn. Patsy was received in heaven Sunday evening, Nov. 18, 2012, at
6:45 p.m., at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. A short time after the
following message was read to her by her loving husband, Dan, "My love for
you Patsy is everlasting before and after our time on this earth. Although I
fear your passing, I know you will be with our Lord and Savior. There are not
enough words to express my joy and happiness spending the time we had together
the past 19 years. My sorrow losing you will turn to smiles remembering you,
memories that will always be. It's not goodbye my love, it's until we meet
again. I will share our last message in hopes those who read it will gain
strength and love facing each tomorrow with a smile as I saw on your beautiful
face everyday since our first kiss knowing we were meant to be. I love you,
Patsy. Yours forever, Dan."
Patsy graduated from Denver East High School in 1944 and attended San Jose State
College.
She worked many years in the furniture industry as a regional manager for
Expressions Custom Furniture and retired in 2006 from Ethan Allen Furniture in
Novi, where she served as general manager.
Patsy is survived by her devoted husband, Daniel Brady, of Kalkaska; daughter,
Michele (William) Contestable, of Chico, Calif.; son, Michael (Andrea) Brady, of
Broomfield, Colo.; and eight grandchildren, Paija Contestable, Payton
Contestable, Chloe Contestable, Lilly Contestable, Sebastian Brady, Bella Brady,
Raina Brady and Logan Patterson.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Furches; and Darren Patterson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Ronald J. Breithaupt

TRAVERSE CITY - Ronald J. Breithaupt, 92, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
Born Dec. 25, 1906, in Traverse City, he was the son of Christian M. and Eleanora (Huff) Breithaupt.
Known as a very hard worker with a very strong work ethic, Ronald had been the manager of shipping for Cherry Growers prior to his retirement. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1944.
On June 2, 1927, in Traverse City, he married Juanita M. Waldron who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1993.
Ronald was also preceded in death by his sons, Charles and Ronald Jr., and his parents.
Survivors include his children, Niles D. (Inza) Breithaupt, Robert L. (Blanche) Breithaupt, and Joan (George) Phillips - all of Traverse City; two grandsons who were raised by Ronald and his wife, Arthur (Jackie) Breithaupt of Virginia and James (Kathy) Breithaupt of Traverse City; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church; Pastors Donald Engrebretsen and C. Jay Koehler will officiate.
Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School.

PORTAGE - Jack D. Brodhagen, 61, of Portage, died Sunday morning in Kalamazoo.
Born July 14, 1938, in Vermilion, Alberta, Canada, he was the son of Kenneth and Lenna (Day) Brodhagen and had lived in Portage for the past 29 years.
Jack retired from the City of Portage where he worked as a civil engineer. He was a personal Santa Claus for many people and touched many lives with his gifts. He also loved to run statistics for AAU and Gus Macker Basketball and enjoyed baking cakes for many special people in his life.
He is survived by three children, Donna Largent of Portage, Susan Little of Battle Creek and Mike (Vicki) Largent of Mesa, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Dustin Largent, Gregory Little, Shawn Little and Taylor Largent; two sisters, Phyllis (Roy) Knittel of South Haven and Sandra Weideman of Elkhart, Ind.; one brother, Richard (Gail) Brodhagen of South Haven; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert Brodhagen.
Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre. Services for Jack will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A private inurnment in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City will take place at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Amateur Athletic Union.

KINGSLEY - Gloria J. Brooks, 46, of Kingsley, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born April 17, 1953, in Flint, she was the daughter of Andrew Charles and Peggy (Lysher) LaBeau. On Dec. 21, 1982, in Traverse City, she married Marvin Brooks.
Gloria resided in Kingsley the past 16 years, coming from Flint. She was employed as a pharmacy technician at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She raised horses and was an avid gardener and crafter.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin, of Kingsley; son, Allen Waterson of Traverse City; daughter, Margaret (Dale) Solberg of Traverse City; three stepdaughters, Tracy Brooks, Jody (Andrew) Schaub, Jr. and Kelly (Greg) Vogue; a grandmother, Margaret Constable; seven grandchildren; and many brothers and sisters.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Bigelow; and grandparents, Harry and Eunice Lysher.
A private memorial service has taken place.
Arrangements were handled by Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley.

Lisa Irene Bugo
TRAVERSE CITY — Lisa Irene Bugo,
33, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at her
family's home, surrounded by her loving family.
Lisa was born on June 22, 1979, to James L. and Paula M. (Hall) Hemgesberg, in
Flint. She married Leo Bugo on Sept. 24, 2000, in Traverse City.
Lisa loved to decorate, refurbish furniture and try new recipes in the kitchen.
Most important to Lisa was her faith. She was a member and minister at Rivers of
Life Fellowship. She was very involved with and enjoyed the Women's and
Children's Ministry.
Lisa is survived by her husband, Leo; parents, James and Paula; her brother,
Luke (Tonia) Hemgesberg; nieces, Jordan and Taylor; mother-in-law, Bridget Bugo;
and many other loving family members and friends.
Lisa was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Leo Bugo.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior, on
Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

WEST BRANCH - T. Chad Buhlman, 29, of West Branch, passed away Saturday at his home.
Chad had lived in West Branch for all his life and attended Ogemaw Heights High School.
His is survived by his mother, Judy Buhlman (Steve McLean) of Mesick; father, Gerald Buhlman (Ruth Arellano) of West Branch; three brothers, Todd Buhlman and Tim (Deborah) Buhlman - both of West Branch, and Thomas (Kimberly) Buhlman of Rose City; two sisters, Tami Buhlman of Tawas City and Tressa (Robert) Augustine of Brighton; his grandmother, Dorothy Noffsinger of West Branch; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch; a rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; Father Richard Seifferly will officiate.

NORTHPORT — Richard Henry
Burmeister, 60, of Northport, passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Munson
Medical Center.
Rick was born on Aug. 1, 1952, in Kalamazoo, the son of William and Marion
(Reynolds) Burmeister. On May 24, 1986, in Grand Rapids, he married Lois M.
Fournier, who survives.
Rick was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Rick owned and operated Leelanau Lawn Care.
He served on the Northport Village Council for over 10 years and was a volunteer
fireman for the Leelanau Township Emergency Services.
Rick enjoyed boating, golfing, gardening and fishing. He was a real jokester who
loved pulling pranks on family and friends and loved his dogs, Meeka, Bennie and
Babe.
In addition to his loving wife of 26 years, Rick is survived by his children,
Joy (Ken) Spencer, Richard (Amy Jo) Burmeister II, Wendy Laymon and Leslie
Carroll; father, William (Janet) Burmeister; sisters, Glenda (Richard) Blanch
and Christine (Art) Bauman; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion; sister, Wendy (Dave) Roberts;
and beloved basset hounds, Suzie and Brandy.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Martinson
Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. A full military graveside funeral service will be
announced in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Cherryland Humane Society, 1750
Ahlberg Road, Traverse City, MI 49686.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -Rex Allen Burton, 65, died Friday of natural causes at his home in Anchorage.
Born March 12, 1934, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of Jack H. Burton and Chauncie (Vaughn) Burton.
Rex graduated in 1952 from Southeastern High School in Detroit. He served for two years, from 1956 to 1958, in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in Detroit for 14 years. He moved to Traverse City, Mich., in 1969 and owned and operated the Red Pine Restaurant in Glen Arbor, Mich. Rex retired in 1995 from North Star Communications in Traverse City.
He moved to Anchorage in February 1999 to join his daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Dennis Yates.
Rex enjoyed collecting antique guns and history. Some of his special qualities included an outstanding personality, jokes, storytelling and never going a day without popcorn.
Survivors include five children, Kenneth A. Burton (Laurie) of Jackson, Mich., Karyn L. Burton of Cedar, Mich., Mark E. (Lisa) Burton of Maple City, Mich., Thomas J. Burton of Medford, Ore., and Robyn C. (Dennis) Yates; five grandchildren, Sarah, Desiree, Michael, Erica, and Kenlee; siblings, Hayward V. (Sandra) Burton of Livonia, Mich., Kay F. (Donald) Helwig of Tampa, Fla., and Gary L. Burton of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rex was preceded in death by a son, Robert Scott Burton, his parents, and a nephew, Alan D. Helwig.
Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held at the home of his son Kenneth A. Burton in Jackson.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice or Cherryland Humane Society of Traverse City.
