KINGSLEY - Wilmot Jackson, 52, of Kingsley, died Thursday at the home of his sister after a long illness.Born July 30, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Andrew and Isabella (Koon) Jackson.Wilmot grew up and attended schools in Mt. Pleasant and Coleman. After serving in the U.S. Navy he worked as a farmer in the Delwin area. Because of illness, he retired in 1994 and made his home with his sister, Wilma.He is survived by three brothers, Bernard and Andrew of Mt. Pleasant and Maurice of Clare; and four sisters, Zelda Jenkins of Traverse City, Norma Rapp of Mt. Pleasant, Wanda Lautner of Traverse City and Wilma (Mrs. Lairy) Gionet of Kingsley.He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Ronald, Lamont and Raymond.Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday and will continue until the 2 p.m. funeral service Tuesday at the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant; Rev. Owen White Pigeon will officiate. Burial will be at Denver Township Cemetery.Arrangements were handled by Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton.

Jankowski, Basil L., 86, of Traverse City, died Friday morning, Dec. 17, 1999, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Rita-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maple City. A full obituary will appear in Sunday's Record-Eagle.

Basil Jankowski
Died December 17, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Basil Jankowski, formerly of Maple City and recently a resident of Traverse City, died Friday morning at Leelanau Memorial Hospital. Basil's friendship, generosity and sense of humor will truly be missed by all who knew him.Born Dec. 31, 1912, in Manistee, he was the son of Stephan and Leona (Skipski) Jankowski. When he was two years old, Basil moved to Maple City with his family. Basil attended schools in Maple City and continued his education at Ferris State University, pursuing a degree in accounting. From 1932 to 1940, Basil taught school in Kasson Township. In 1940 Basil began working for the U.S. Postal Service as postmaster of Maple City Post Office.It was in Maple City that Basil met Winifred Nachazel, whom he married in 1941. In 1943 he entered into the U.S. Army, where he became a staff sergeant. He was stationed at various locations, including Panama. Upon his return from the service, Basil continued to work as postmaster of Maple City Post Office and later as a rural letter carrier until his retirement in 1975.Basil was involved in numerous organizations, dedicating many hours of his time to helping others. He was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Cedar Maple City Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America Council, Kasson Township Grange, St. Rita's Men's Club and AARP. He also spent many hours in his woodshop building many beautiful pieces of furniture. Basil also enjoyed fishing and traveling.Besides his wife, Winifred, Basil is survived by three sons, Jerome (Jean) of Florida, Allan (Michele) of Traverse City and Nicholas of Traverse City; two daughters, Ann (Andy) Sharp of Toronto and Eileen of Traverse City; three sisters, Virginia (Frank) Zawilanski, Nettie (Wilbur) Leonard and Blanche Ottoman; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Sophie, Bernadine, Helen and Victoria; and a brother, Joseph.Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10:30 a.m. Monday until the time of service at St. Rita-St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maple City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with Rev. Chad Zielinski serving as celebrant. Military honors will be under the auspices of Cherryland VFW Post No. 2780. Burial is planned for the spring at St. Rita's Catholic Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be directed to Cedar-Maple City Lions Club or mass intentions.

Jedena, Hilda

LEELANAU COUNTY — Hilda Jedena, 96, of Leelanau County passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at her home near Glen Arbor.Hilda was born in Romania on March 10, 1916, the youngest of the large Gaschler family. Through the tribulation of World War II, Hilda's family became divided as she found herself residing in a displaced persons camp in Austria.She entered into marriage with the late Ladislaus Jedena on Feb. 25,1925.Hilda was a tough, strong willed, and resilient woman, who made it through the challenges and difficulties of the war to raise her family.In her self-sufficient nature, Hilda found true enjoyment working the soil and created a passion for her garden. Hilda grew everything from vegetables to berries and enjoyed the fruits of her labor, canning many of the items or adding them to her unbelievable baked goods. She was a remarkable and talented seamstress and was strong in her faith.Hilda's memory will be cherished by her daughter, Lydia (Peter) Monahan, and her son, Walter Jedena; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as other loving family members and friends.A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire, with Rev. Johnson, Martha E. 'Martie'

NORTHPORT — Martha "Marti" Elizabeth Johnson, 63, of Northport, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at Munson Medical Center.Marti was born on March 19, 1949, in Detroit, the daughter of Daniel and Lillian (Bakken) Krieg. In 1984, in Rochester Hills, she married Robert L. Johnson, who survives.Marti was a very talented and creative artist. Her pottery and fabric creations were outstanding, and she loved mixing mediums and creating very unusual pieces. She was a gourmet cook and loved to entertain family and friends. Her love of animals was also expressed as part of her love of life. Whether it be her outstanding gourmet meals, her talented creations or her love of life, her memory will live in us all forever.In addition to her husband, Marti is survived by her stepchildren, Luke (Linda) G. Johnson and Anna M. Mrs. P. N. Johnson. Pioneer of Grawn. Died Yesterday.
Johnson, Mrs. P. N. one of the pioneers of the region, died at her home near Grawn yesterday at the age of 67. She had been ill for some time with pnemonia. She leaves no near relatives except five grandchildren, the children of Elmer Bowman, of Bendon. Her daughter and their mother died some time ago. She came to this region in 18?6 with her first husband, Mr. Gardner, who died soon after they settled here. About fifteen years ago she married Mr. Johnson moving at that time to his farm near Grawn. He has been dead several years and she has continued to reside near Grawn. The funeral services will be held at the church at Grawn tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock.

FOUND DEAD IN BED
Sudden Death of Prominent Business Man of Cadillac Who is Known to Many in This City
Johnson, Robert one of the leading business men of Cadillac and known to many in this city, was found dead in his bed this morning, death being caused by apoplexy. Mrs. Johnson, who is the niece of Mrs. A. T. Evans if this city, and a cousin of Hon. W. H. Foster, went to call her husband and found him cold in death. She is almost prostrated by the shock. Apoplexy is given as the cause of death.
Mr. Johnson who is in the wholesale and retail grocery business, was in perfect health, apparently, until the time of his death. T. A. Coalan, who was an intimate friend, stopped there Friday evening on his way from Detroit to this city, and spent the evening. He went to Cadillac this morning to assist the bereaved family if possible.
