The county was named after Samuel D. Ingham who was President Andrew Jackson's Secretary of the Treasury. The county seat is Mason.
Ingham County has been the site of the Michigan Capital since 1848. Michigan's first capitol building was located in Detroit from 1835-1847. When the capital was moved to Lansing, a temporary wooden building was constructed and used from 1848-1878. On January 1, 1879, the current capitol building was dedicated.
