KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI
GENEALOGY & LOCAL HISTORY
Kalamazoo County Soldiers Graves 1891
The following list
comes from an article in the Kalamazoo Gazette, June 5, 1891. It was the
Memorial Day celebration in Kalamazoo and described the local events which
included decorating veterans' graves at the Riverside, Catholic Riverside and
Mountain Home Cemeteries. Not all veterans were identified. Riverside Cemetery
has seven unknown soldiers buried there; the Catholic section of Riverside has
two unknowns. By checking against burial listings, more information was added
than appeared in the article. Remember, though, this list includes only veterans
who died before Memorial Day of 1891. There were still many Civil War vets alive
at the time. One woman, Miss Dunbar, daughter of Civil War veteran Col. G. Edwin
Dunbar, assisted at the decorating of the graves while wearing the cap worn by
her father during Sherman's march to the sea.
