Also a biology of Menelaus and Pierius Winisemius, sons of Haye Piers of Winsum in latter part of 16th century. In afternoon we four saw Martha Cook building, Knabe piano, Annas room, red room, and blue room. Then to engineering building where machines for weighing power, testing strength, foundry, moulding, architects at work, alumni hall, statuary, painting. Open safety pin which had passed through a body. Crushed skull, fatty degeneration of heart. Leg looked like two by additional growth. Were aided by bystanders to crawl out from under Buick car. Then at point of gun forced Henry J. Geiger to abandon to them his Cadillac car, went to 455 Weaver Street which they had rented a week ago. At 8 P.M. Officer Geo. Brandsma + Detective Samuel Slater were shot by them as the officers tried to force an entrance to the house. Brandsma died immediately, Slater died two days later. Robbers escaped in their auto.

1923 June 21 Thursday 10 A.M. Along Yellowstone River. Left, saw Mud Volcano, Dragons Mouth, Otter Creek, Canyon, Inspiration Point, Wonderful. At 12 noon arrived at Canyon Camp. Dinner, Rained every 10 minutes. In afternoon took hike with guide to Artist Point, peeked over the top of cliff- Whew! Point Look Out. Saw Pathe(?) Camera Man take pictures of the Falls a mile away. Also close- up. Camped near Waterfall 308 ft. Rainy. Community Singing. Popcorn. Bad night. Rain and snow. 1923 June 22 Friday. Took pictures of Ma by the Waterfall. Rain and snow hard. 1:15 P.M. left for Mammoth Hot Springs. Should have gone north to Camp Roosevelt then West but could not- too much snow in Dunraven Pass. Went next to Norris, thence north to Mammoth. Passed Frying Pan, a hot spring 15 feet in diameter, full of steam vents and hot water in constant agitation. Twin Lakes close together yet each of decided different hue. Beaver Lake, Roaring Mountain, sides all crevices hundreds of steam jets hissing and roaring-formerly could be heard for 15 miles. Apollinaris Spring tastes like epsom salts, Golden Gate Hoodoos(?). Saw beautiful complete rainbow against side of mountain. 5 P.M. Arrived at Mammoth Hot Springs. Rain. Climbed to top. Beautiful colors, Jupiter Terrace, Hymen Terrace, Angel Terrace. Swimming pool where 2 women and one man swam in warm water. Dared not go in. Air too cold. Devils Thumb. Liberty Cap. Trees growing in rocks. Stayed in cabin that night to dry up. 1923 June 23 Saturday. Saw buffaloes in enclosure. Left Mammoth at 8:15. Fine weather. Made trip back to Norris, thence to Old Faithful. Passed same scenery as day before. Also Obsidian Cliff 250 feet high of black volcanic glass. Road was made by burning huge fires, then chilling it and breaking up glass in small parts. After Norris saw Congress Pool, walked across geyser field- hundreds of geysers, Arsenic Spring, Black Growler (all black around it) Steam Vent, Hurricane (blowing hole) Minute Man (not working), Beryl Spring (hottest spring in park, 15 feet across), Iron Spring, Chocolate Spring, Hundreds of geysers and pretty pools. Excelsior Spring, formerly called Hells Half-Acre, has formerly erupted something fierce. Biscuit Basin, Morning Glory Pool, Handkerchief Pool, Emerald Pool, McCoy threw stone in one (not allowed), Congress Geyser, Musical Geyser- one squirted Mrs. Chicago, Mammoth Paint Pots 40x60, Punchbowl Spring, Whistling Geyser. 12 noon Arrived at Old Faithful, saw it erupt twice, seventy minutes apart, almost 200 feet high, 3 minutes continued throws out 300,000 gallons at each eruption, a stream about 2 feet in diameter. Took pictures of it. Day before Mammoth Geyser had erupted, erupts once in about 3 weeks, a stream of about 5 feet in diameter. Did not see Chinaman Geyser, where it was said a Chinaman started a laundry and was blown up, because he dropped soap in it. It appears that a couple bars of soap will practically make any geyser play in a few minutes. But Government forbids the practice as it is supposed it might hurt the other geysers. Beautiful hotel designed by 19-year-old architect who also designed the hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs. In afternoon left over Madison Junction to West Yellowstone. Should have stayed 24 hours longer. Had our last supper there at expense of the Company and got money for two times 3 meals returned to us. 7 P.M. left on sleeper on the Union Pacific for Salt Lake City where we arrived Sunday morning 7:30. 1923 June 24 Sunday at Salt Lake City. Street car rides. Mormon guide told they arrived here in 1847, built the temple in 1863 & Tabernacle holds 8,000 easily- can crowd in 10,000. Can hear pin drop over 200 feet away, whispering and rubbing of hands. Angel translated the gold plates to Joseph Smith. Organ was built of all wood pipes by themselves. Has now an electric action made by Kimball & Co. of Chicago. No reserved seats, no collection, all are alike, children of God. No minister. Service only Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock. Speech by most anybody selected by the President. 12 Apostles have their seat on platform, choir of 500. To avoid nails wooden pins are used throughout the whole structure, but nails were used in flooring. In those days nails were $10.00 a pound. Saw Fort Douglas, also States Prison. Attended services. 4:45 P.M. left for Denver over Denver and Rio Grande. Stopped at Soldiers Summit. Had to curve around a village 5 times. Had to travel 5 miles to gain one mile. After that crossed desert in the night. 1923 June 25 Monday afternoon went over Tennessee Pass. 10,244 feet. After that about 3 P.M. went through Grand Canyon or Royal Gorge. Rocks 3,000 feet high, overhanging bridge. Large split in rock, along river bed, in observation car. Long tunnel, windows closed. 8:30 P.M. arrived in Denver.
