Rose Beach at Reed's Lake

Rose Bathing Beach

Rose's Beach

In 1901, Jim Rose came to Grand Rapids from Milwaukee. He was an experienced swimmer and swimming instructor. Jim decided to branch out on his own and he checked out several locations before deciding on locating on the west shore of Reeds Lake.
Rose's Beach became a popular place for swimmers and divers. There were races across the lake. Among those who took part were Hugh Blacklock, Ernie Briggs, Cy Kuyers and "Slip" Miller.
The Rose children, Myrtle, Howard and Bud (John D.), became outstanding swimmers. Myrtle one swam around the lake three consecutive times.
Jim closed the beach in 1942 during WWII. After his death, his son, John D. Rose, continued in the operating the bathing beach.
