He entered the service of the Third Michigan Infantry at its beginning as a
major, age 34.
He was commissioned on 13 May 1861 and mustered 10 June 1861. He was
commissioned
Colonel on 28 Oct 1861. He was wounded in action at the battle of Fair
Oaks, Virginia,
31 May 1862. The wound was to his hip. He took a short leave for
recuperation, but rejoined
the war effort, as a Brigadier General of volunteers on 29 November 1862.
His hip wound later ruptured and he was sent home to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
He served as a recruiting officer until his death in January of 1864.
