Eulabee Dix
1878-1961
Eulabee Dix, an artist who painted miniature portraits
of many famous people, including Ethel Barrymore and Mark Twain.
She painted in Europe as well as the United States and her success
brought her in contact with many politicians and aristocrats. With two years at the St. Louis art school, Miss Dix left Grand Rapids for New York in the fall of 1899 to pursue her ambition to become a self-supporting and skilled miniature portrait artists. One of the first pieces that she did was a 3" x 2" portrait of herself at the age of 21. She tried other pursuits such as acting, designing hats and dolls, and cutting silhouettes. She wrote and illustrated poetry and children's books. Despite her personal success, Miss Dix could not ignore the changes in the world where the public was losing interest in miniature portraiture. Her talent was soon underutilized and underpaid. |
