Arend “Don” Lubbers

 

            Don Lubbers is a native of Holland, Michigan and graduated from Hope College.  His father, Erwin Lubbers, was president of Hope College. He received his master’s degree from Rutgers University in 1956.

            He taught at Wittenburg University before returning to Rutgers to finish his doctorate program.

            He was president of Central College, Pella, IA until 1969.

            At the age of 29 in 1969, he became president of Grand Valley State University, then known as Grand Valley State College.  He was the second president.  James Zumberge being the first and he retired in 2001.  He holds the title of President Emeritus.  Much of the university’s growth came during his tenure.  The university expanded from a small cluster of colleges to Michigan’s fastest growing university.  Lubbers Stadium on the Allendale campus is named for him.
