At the age of 28, he has been a pro for nine years. He boxes in the lightweight division and in 2005 in the welterweight division. .

He was named "Fighter of the Year" by Ring Magazine and he held that title from October, 1998 until December, 2001 while defending it 8 times before moving up. Mayweather won the WBC lightweight title in April, 2002 and has defended it three times.
