Young Arthur Vandenberg and his wife, Elizabeth (Watson) Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg (1884 - 1951) Arthur Hendrick Vandenberg, a U. S. Senator from Michigan, was born 22 Mar 1884 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended the public schools and studied law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbon; editor and publisher of the Grand Rapids Herald, 1906-1928; author; appointed on 31 March 1928 as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Woodbridge N. Ferris; was elected on 6 November 1928, to fill this vacancy and also for the term ending 3 January; re-elected in 1934, 1940 and 1946 and served from 31 March 1928, until his death; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Eightieth Congress; chairman, Committee on Enrolled Bills (72nd Congress), Republican Conference (79th Conference), Committee on Foreign Relations (80th Congress); delegate to the United Nations Conference at San Francisco in 1945; delegate to the United Nations General Assembly at London and New York in 1946; United States adviser to the Council of Foreign Ministers at London, Paris, and New York in 1946; delegate to Pan American Conference at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1947; died at Grand Rapids, Mich., 18 April 1951; interment in Oak Hill Cemetery
