THE HONORABLE JUDGE R. STUART HOFFIUS

14 July 1914 – 19 January 2005

 

Judge Richard Stuart Hoffius, of East Grand Rapids, 90, died. He was a graduate of Colgate University and the University of Michigan Law School. During WWII he served as an FBI agent and for 29 years was Circuit Court Judge. He retired in 1989 and held the position Of-Counsel at Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt and Howlett LLP.

He worked at attorney for the Kent County Airport Authority during the campaign to build the present airport. He helped bring the Calder sculpture to Grand Rapids.
He and his wife, Barbara, receive Aquinas College’s Emeritus Award in 1996.

He walked the Mackinac Bridge avery year for 39 years.

He married Barbara Chamberlain, daughter of Glenn R. Chamberlain, who predeceased him. He is survived by two sons, Dirk (Victoria) of Grand Rapids; and Stephen (Susan) of Charleston, SC; two grandchildren, Anna and Jacob Hoffius of Charleston, SC.

Stuart was the son of Cornelius Hoffius, who was born 5 Aug 1881 in Goes, Netherlands. Cornelius came as a seven year old with his family and settled in Grand Rapids. Cornelius attended the University of Michigan Law School and graduated in 1904. He was assistant prosecuting attorney for Kent County from 1916-1925. He was elected circuit court judge in 1938 and died in office 26 October 1932. Cornelius married Rose Kas and they had one son, Stuart.
