Mrs. James H. Campbell of 27 Prospect Ave., NE for more than 40 years a resident of Grand Rapids and widely known throughout the state because of her work of research into the history of Michigan, died Thursday morning in Ann Arbor following an illness of several months.

Mrs. Campbell, widow of the former counsel for the Grand Rapids & Indiana and Pennsylvania railroads, had gained a state-wide reputation for her labors in bringing out the picturesque in the history of the state. She was tireless in this endeavor and gained the reputation of being one of the best historian in Michigan.

She was a former regent of Sophie de Marsac Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Daughters of the War of 1812 as well as other organizations. She always was prominent in any activity promoted by any of the patriotic organizations.

Mrs. Campbell leaves two nieces as the only relatives, Mrs. Walter Banyan of Benton Harbor and Mrs. Leon Snitzler of Chicago.

Burial will be at her former home, Marshall.
