History of Bethel Christian Reformed Church
For many years the early Christian Reformed settlers in southwest Grand Rapids had faithfully attended the Grandville Avenue and Franklin Street churches. A little more than a quarter of a century ago, however, there came into being, so vague at first as hardly to be noticeable, but with gradually increasing persistency, a spirit of unrest among the younger group of members. Not dissatisfaction, but fear lay at the root of this uneasiness - a fear definitely voiced by the younger, and just as definitely recognized by the older members. For how could anyone who would look into the future fail to see that, in this great and noble country of America, intelligent Christian citizenship would depend upon a working knowledge of tis language? If young people, in all their daily contacts in work and in school, were using the American language, and only their religion was brought to them in the language of their former mother tongue, would they not soon come to feel that Christianity is not a matter of every-day living, but something that comes out on Sunday morning, like the best hats out of hat boxes, and that is carefully replaced at night with the Sunday dress or suit? How could even the most devout young people defend their faith against others with whom they associated if they did not have the words they needed at their command in the tongue those others could understand? How could these young people expect to grow in the knowledge and the grace of God if they themselves used the language of their fathers less and less? We still gratefully remember, and for this we wish to pay respectful tribute to our two parent churches at this time, that the consistories of these churches stepped forward and led the entire movement, thought it meant much work, and a consequent decrease in membership for them. At a combined meeting of the consistories of the two mother churches, plans were made to hold Sunday evening services conducted in the English language under the joint auspices of the two consistories. The first service, held on October 6, 1912, in London's hall, was conducted by Dr. Henry Beets, who proved by words and deeds his great interest in fostering the cuase of American speaking churches. He did much to help us see our way and to give us courage to go ahead. In our group there was a man especially capable of being a leader. Rev. Breen had most unselfishly urged one of the ablest men in his own congregation, mr. B. J. Bennink, to join the new movement and give it direction and guidance. This work Mr. Bennink accomplished faithfully for us. It was not long before the conviction was general that an English speaking congregation must soon be organized. It is difficult to realize today what a momentous thing it was to come to a definite decision. Was such a drastic step really necessary? Were the younger people perhaps just a little ashamed of the Holland? Wasn't it a step toward modernizing the church, and therefore definitely dangerous? How many earnest prayers were sent up to the throne of grace for God's guidance in this matter! Nor did the young people realize what it cost their parents to go with them into this new venture. Only later, when they saw unexpectedly how profoundly stirred their parents were when they heard a beautiful Holland psalm sung or played did they get a glimpse into their homesickness for the dignity and beauty of the Holland service - a longing sternly repressed "for the sake of the children." At the meeting of Classis Grand Rapids West, February, 1913, the consistories of Grandville Avenue and Franklin Street asked permission to organize an English speaking church in their vicinity. The request was granted, and a committee consisting of Dr. H. Beets, Rev. E. J. Tanis, and Elder formsma was appointed to assist in the work of organization On March 13, 1913, the new church was organized. Rev. E. Breen, pastor of the Grandville Avenue Church, presided at the meeting. Dr. Beets took as his text Exodus 14:15, "Speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward," and Rev. Veltkamp, Psalm 122: 8, "For my brethren and companions' sake I will now say, Peace be within thee." Rev. Tanis closed with prayer and pronounced upon the new congregation its first benediction. At this meeting 47 families and 19 individuals joined themselves together into a new English-speaking church of the Christian Reformed denomination.

Zuwerink Individuals: Anna Bontekoe, Anna Groendyk, Rein Groothuis, George Hartger, Albert Koeze, Grace Koeze, Jessie Koeze, Roy Koeze, Nellie Lenters, Peter Posthuma, Emma Tuenis, Albert Tangenberg The following officers were elected: On March 25, 1913, the name, "Bethel Christian Reformed Church" was adopted by the consistory as the name of this the fifth English-speaking Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. The congregation at a meeting held 2 April 1913, decided to buy a plot of ground west of Grandville Avenue where Shamrock Street ends at the brow of the hill as a site for a church building. When Mr. Bennink left, in July of that year, to labor in another field, the need of a pastor was felt more keenly than ever before. Reverend G. Hoeksema, then pastor at Ellsworth, Michigan, was called September 2, 1913. Because God directed him to see both the need of a new struggling congregation and the importance of English speaking churches in the work of God's Kingdom, he found it in his heart to accept the invitation to come, and on October 22, 1913, was installed as first pastor of Bethel. The following year the task of erecting a church building was taken up in earnest. The building committee - consisting of Mr. L. Zandstra, Mr. N. Spoelstra, Mr. D. London, Mr. O. Vander Til, and Mr. P. Posthuma - chose as architect Mr. Thomas Benjamin and as contractor Mr. J. DeVroome. On February 25, 1915, the building was dedicated to the service of God. Rev. Hoeksema remained at Bethel for thirteen years. Beginning years for a church are always somewhat stormy, but we experienced great blessing and growth during Reverend Hoeksema's pastorate. We cannot make mention of all the things, even the important events, that have become part of our history. Bu we must recall for a moment the anxious, the harrowing days that our nation experienced during the time of the World War. Our church sent many of its sons. At
first our Service Flag carried eight blue stars, but by the time the program was
held in the church to honor our boys, the following took part: During the summer of 1926, Rev. Hoeksema received a call from the Roseland III, Chicago, church. He felt that he must accept their call. In October of 1926, Rev. G. Hofmeyer came to us from McBain, Michigan and was in stalled on October 28th. Rev. Hofmeyer remains our pastor and our number of families has grown to 170. As early as 1915 or 1916 local mission work was begun in a hall on Burton Street. The work then moved to Burlingame, then to Chicago Drive and, finally, to Hall Street. Christian education has been a chief objective for the members of Bethel. The Grandville Avenue School and the Franklin Street School are now merged into the Southwest Christian Schools. With the labor of faithful pastors and the many leaders in our church that have given their full measure, we are grateful to God for His many blessings. Elders, 1913-1938 Deacons, 1913-1938 |
