LOOKING BACKWARD

The winter of 1903-4 was one that has much snow, sleet and ice to its credit, and with the usual result of discomfort to people - especially those who had to depend upon street cars for transportation or else walk.  There were some eight or nine families in the south end who were members either of LaGrave Ave. or some of the other downtown churches.  This was before the automobile was very much in evidence.  We were old-fashioned enough to consider it wrong to take a street car on Sunday, so it was a case of walk or stay at home, excepting a few who were fortunate enough to own a horse and buggy - or cutter in winter.  But even at that owning a horse in winter was not an unalloyed blessing as one had to eigher hitch near the church in the cold or take it to a livery stable with its added expense and Sabbath-breaking possibilities.

Often on the long walk to and from church the matter of having a church of our own in the south end was discussed, but it was not until November, 1904, that anything definite was done.  A meeting was called at the home of Mr. William J. Heyboer on the corner of Griggs and Horton Ave. on 18 November 1904, for the purpose of taking some action toward organizing an American Speaking congregation at Burton Heights.

This was really the beginning of the Burton Heights Christian Reformed Church.  The following were present at this meeting:
William Pell, M. J. Elenbaas, William H. Heyboer, J. Yonkman, J. Formsma, E. J. Smitter, A. J. Englewood and A. J. Vandenberg.

A preliminary organization was effected, with Mr. Heyboer as Chariman and Vandenberg as Secretary.

Chairman appoined a committee to look up sites.  This committee reported at the next meeting.  Three locations were suggested.  One of Burton Ave., west of Division, $1,200.00; one on Horton Ave. for $950.00, and another on the corner of Horton and Hazen for $900.00, the latter consisting of two lots.  The unanimous choice was for the last named site and two Trustees were selected to negotiate the purchase of the property.  Enthusiasm waxed high and eight lists were started out to secure funds to pay for our lots.  $225.00 was pledged at the meeting.  A committee was also appointed to acquaint the LaGrave Ave. Consistory of our action.  At the following meeting, Nov. 29, the Trustees reported the purchase of the property, and the committee to LaGrave Ave. reported the approval of our action by the LaGrave Ave. Consistory.

Now follows a period of striving to get enough money to pay for our lots, and I can assure you that is was some struggle as wages were low and work uncertain.  In looking over the lists I find donations from $.50 to five dollars - one for $25.00.  Finally the amount was raised and the lots  paid for and we had a beautiful location for a church - but as yet no church, and we soon discovered that building a church means money and still more money, which was then very hard to get and during March and April, 1905, most of the time was spent trying to decide what kind of building we could put up that would be within our reach.

On 4 April 1905, we asked the Classis to be organized.  Consistory of LaGrave Ave. consented to present our petition.  After taking the matter up with the Consistory we were told that it would be necessary for the head of families and all mature single persons who wished to joine the organization to sign the petition and a committee of two was appointed to hurry the matter along so that it could be presented to the May classis.  At that meeting our petition was favorably acted upon and Rev. Beets, Bosma and Doesema appointed to effect the organization.

1 June 1905, was the date set by the LaGave Ave. Consistory but was postponed to 8 June 1905.  On the evening of the latter date Burton Heights congregation was duly organized at the M. E. Church on Buchanan Avenue.  The list of Charter members you will find elsewhere in this booklet.

The first consistory was elected and installed immediately after the organization.

    J. Formsma and William J. Heyboer were elected as Elders and A. J. Vandenberg and E. J. Smitter as Deasons, the former to served two years and the latter one year.

The newly organized congregation met in the M. E. Church for some time, but soon the desire to have a meeting place of our own became so strong that a frame building was erected on the east end of our lots.  Everybody helped on this building and thus it soon was ready for use.  It was about this time that we asked and received permission from Classis to call a minister, but it was not until June of 1906 that we were gladdened by Rev. William Bode accepting our call.  He preached his first sermon on 8 July 1906.  It soon became evident that our building would not hold the crowds that came to worship with us so a committee was appointed to get up plans for a new church building.  Rev. William Bode, President; R. Yonker, Vice-President; G. A. Boer, Secretary; C. Veenstra, W. Pelf, J. Olthouse, J. Vis, F. DeVries, A. J. Dint and J. Sytsma.

In November, 1907, the new building was dedicated to the service of God.  The cost complete was between five and six thousand dollars.  In the new building a place had been provided for a pipe organ and the young people of the church, under the able leadership of Mr. B. Gezon, got money together for a fine organ which was soon afterwards installed.

Dr. Bode was with u7s until December, 1910, preaching his farewell sermon on 25 December 1910.  It was with heavy hearts that we bade farewell to our first pastor who had endeared himself to every one of the congregation by his untiring efforts for her welfare.

For nearly a year we were vacant - on 1 September 1911, we were gladdened by Rev. K. Poppen accepting our call.  He preached his first sermon 1 October 1911, and for about two years our congregation enjoyed his work and ministry.  His farewell sermon was preached on 5 October 1913.

Our congregation continued to grow numerically in spite of the fact that we were without a pastor for nearly two years.  It was in March, 1915, that we received the glad tidings from Rev. H. Beets that he had accepted our call and would become our pastor.  His first sermon was preached on 28 March 1915, and he remained with us until 26 September 1920, when he was honored with a call of Synod to the secretaryship of Missions for the denomination.

Again o0ur heavenly Shepherd was mindful of our needs.  He inclined the mind and heart of Rev. H. J. Mulder, our present pastor, to take up the work among us.  He preached his inaugural sermon 10 July 1921.  His efforts are richly blessed.  Again we had to "Enlarge the place of our tent and stretch forth the curtinas of our habitation."  Taking this retrospect we acknowledge with grate hearts tath Jehovah our God has led us all the way and therefore let us raise our Ebenezer to the glory of His name.

A. J. Vandenberg

OUR PASTORS

The Rev. William Bode was our first pastor.  He was taking a post-graduate course at the University of Chicago and at the same time engaged in Home MIssionary work in Classis Oost-Friesland, when the call came to him to leave these busy activities and to labor in the quiet little church on the southern outskirts of Grand Rapids.  Our hearts, indeed, rejoiced greatly that he saw in this call a heavenly vision which he had to obey.  The call came to him at a time when we had so very little to offer.  We were then as a congregation only a babe of a year old and very small at that, numbering only 18 families.  We had not beautiful church building to which we could welcome him, as you may see by looking at the picture of our first church home in this booklet.  Nor could we offer him a magnificent manse; a rented house on Sutton Street had to serve as parsonage, and we had to ask him to pay half of the rent himself out of a salary of $700.00
Rev. Bode was installed in his work among us 6 July 2006.  Up to this time we were part of the Home Mission Field in which Rev. J. R. Brink was laboring.  Rev. Brink preached the installation sermon.
The Lord richly blessed the work of his servant.  Our little church building soon became too small.  It was torn down and the material used in building our fist parsonage.  Only a year after the arrival of Rev. Bode, we could dedicate our second church building unto the Lord.  Our hearts were sad at his farewell.  He was to take up his studies at the Chicago University and prepare himself for greater work in the Lord's cause.

In Rev. K. Poppen we received our second pastor.  He also, as our first pastor, left the Home Mission Field to take up the work of the Lord among us.  He was camping on the extreme northwestern border of the Christian Reformed Kingdom in Classis Pacific, when our call came to him.  He was installed 27 September 1911.  Faithful he ever brought unto us the pure unadulterated food of the Word of God.  In his modest, unpretentious way he wrote me: "Our sojourn at Burton Heights was quiet and uneventful."  The Lord increased our numbers by twenty families.  A splendid Men's Society was held during his pastorate.  He only stayed two years.  An urgent call from Madison Avenue, Paterson, NJ was accepted.

Rev. H. Beets became our third pastor.  He was not a strange among us; for fully 16 years he had ministered to the LaGrave Avenue Church in our own city and many of our members were former members of that church and had learned to love this highly gifted man of God.  He was installed 28 March 1915.  The Lord blessed his work.  During his pastorate of 5 and a half years, 110 persons made confession of faith and about 50 families were added to the church.  Our church building debt was paid, our present parsonage was built, and the site now occupied by our new church was procured.  A call came to him to serve our denomination as director of Missions.  He looked upon this as a call from God.  He preached his farewell sermon 26 September 1920.

Rev. H. J. Mulder came to us from Lafayette, Indiana.  It was difficult for them to leave that area but after arriving they are content.  He was installed on 8 July 1921.
