Notes for ELISHA STANTON:

Elisha and his brother, Charles, moved from Tioga Co., NY to Ashtabula, OH. They settled there until about 1872 when they came to Michigan in Kent County.

Notes for LAFAYETTE JABEZ STANTON:

Lafayette fought in the Civil War and was a blacksmith. He lived in Kent County for a few years and then purchased homestead property in Mecosta County where he moved. His son, Harmon also lived in Mecosta County and then moved to the Lake/Osceola counties area.

Grattan - October 10, 1881

My Dear Children,

Received your Welcome Letter to day glad to hear that you are all well doing well. 
We are all well here in Michigan, & doing well, it has been very dry this summer,
but we are having a good & nice fall as ever I see every thin green & Lovely.
we have in 20 acres of Wheat looks splendid.  Come & See, we had 250 busels of
wheat 200 of Oats & I think 200 of Corn this fall, our potatoe very poor not dug yet,
the best thing we have is a Good Cement Well 72 feet deep plenty good cold water,
come and take a drink out of it & see how you like it,
Now if you can come out I am all ready to start for the Deer hunt.  I never(r) had a
better time to spend a week or a month, since I can remember than I have this fall,
our work is well up & I can enjoy the healthful play the Lord willing.  I want you to
come before it gets to cold.  I will be happy to meet you at Belding at any time to
convey you to the old log House on Howell hill, I think I will renew my age a few
years, since I have had it so hard for a few years past but thanks be to the Great I
Am, he has not Tempted me 'bove that I am able to Stand.  I feel as though when The
Trumpet sounds, I shall be ready to follow my Guide whare Tears will all be Wiped
away, our Night be turn'd to Endless Day and on our Golden Harps we'l play and sound
Redemption through the Sky, I have given up trying to do much more than to earn my
board.  James is good & patient with me, never hurrys me nor asks me to do anything
only what I have a mind so you see I am taking all the Comfort this Earth can afford,
when you get here & we have had our hunt, I shall expect it to be the last Deer hunt
ever to take.  To hear that you have got along so well has done me a great deal of
good.  Your Mother can't hardly wait til you get here.  Ma is Old and geting quite
broken down is not as fleshy as she has been, Lottie was here to day, my oldest
Brother Elisha Stanton is dead and buryed, he fell down dead picking up chips in the
Door yard on the 25th day of July last, he was 80, years old, 
Death & War my mind oppresses.
Autumn Shows me my decay
While I mourn my past distresses
Warnes me of my Dieing day.
We had a very heavy Thunder Storm last friday night.
Lighting killed two calves on Frank Kings farm.
I am about run ashore for news will have to close, in this I send my Prayr's and kind
feelings to all.
So I bid You God Speed
