Lammers Family Immigration

Jan Lammers and his wife, Johanette, along with their four children left Noordgouwe in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands for the United States in 1965. The children who immigrated would be Helena age 8, Hermine age 7, Grietje age 5, and Garret (Harry) age 1. A son, Jan, had died in July 1863 at the age of only 5 months.

Unlike many Dutch immigrants of this period, Jan was not a Seceder from the official Dutch Reformed Church and was not seeking religious freedom. After settling in Grand Rapids the family aligned itself with the Holland Unitarian Church, which was a liberal church more in line with the official church of the Netherlands. However, religious freedom was the official reason given for leaving. This was probably more advantageous than listing the true reason, fleeing arrest or murder!

The Lammers men were all avid hunters. Jan’s father, Garret Lammers, was part of a gentlemen’s agreement with other landowners that allowed them to freely hunt on each other’s lands. Jan during one of his hunting expeditions, managed to get into an altercation with one of the landowners. At this point there are two versions to the story, one is that a fight resulted and one is that Jan shot the other person. In any case it was believed that he had killed the other person. Jan and Johanette’s families pooled their resources and put Jan and his family on the next ship out of the Netherlands. At least that is how the family story goes. Later it was learned that the victim survived the incident.

Three more children were born in Grand Rapids Maatje, Marie and William Harry.

The Lammers men had a long history in the trade of masonry and Jan and his two sons were all involved in brick and stone masonry as well as plastering. There was also a strong history of affiliation in Freemasonry in the Lammers family. Jan is believed to have belonged to a Masonic Lodge in the Netherlands. Harry and William joined lodges in Grand Rapids.

SERIOUSLY HURT IN FALL FROM WAGON

ARIE KONING, DRIVER, RUN OVER BY HEAVY MOVING VAN

Jerked from his wagon seat, when his team started suddenly, Arie Koning, 30 years old, 1232 Alpine avenue, N., W., was run over by a heavy moving wagon and sustained injuries to his spine, which will keep him confined to his bed for some time.

Koning is employed as a teamster by Dick DeGroot, who operates a moving van business. He was at Scribner avenue and Sixth street shortly before 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon. He had mounted the seat of his wagon and picked up the reins, but before he had secured a strong hold on them, the team started. Dr. John A. McColl, who was passing, gave the injured man temporary relief. Special Officer Steed and Patrolman Sage responded to a call for the police ambulance and Koning was taken to his home. Dr. P. J. Kriekard was then called and dressed the man’s injuries. While Koning’s spine is injured and his condition is considered serious, it is not believed that he is fatally hurt.
