TWELFTH MICHIGAN INFANTRY

Niles was selected as the place for rendezvous for this regiment and its organization under the direction of Colonel Francis Quinn was begun in September, 1861.

This regiment moved from Niles on the 18th day of March, 1862, taking the route to St. Louis, Missouri; thence it was hurried forward by steamer by the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, reaching Pittsburg landing in time to take part in the important action fought at that place on the 6th and 7th of April. On its arrival there it was assigned to Colonel Peabody’s brigade of General Prentiss’s division, Army of Tennessee and was one of the first regiments attacked by the enemy suffering a severe loss. During the year, it participated in the affairs of Metamora, Shiloh and Luka where forty-seven were killed, ninety-two wounded, one hundred nine died of disease and one hundred six wounded, the regiment marched three thousand miles losing four men in battle and one hundred nine died of disease. The command re-enlisted in November, 1863, as a veteran regiment; furloughed at Niles, February 1st and appeared on the field at Little Rock, April 1, 1864. The duties of this regiment during the year were such as try men’s souls; yet such duties were performed with remarkable diligence and through faithfulness. This regiment continued in active service until its muster out at Camden, New Jersey, February 15, 1866. It reported at Jackson, February 27, receiving its discharge March 6, 1866.
