Third Michigan Infantry
The Third Michigan Infantry was mustered in at Grand Rapids and left for the Potomac, 13 Jun 1861, with 1,040 men which was increased with 123 more. It served at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Charles City, Cross Roads, Malvern Hill and Bull Run. The loss at Fair Oaks was thirty killed and at Bull Run twenty. The losses of the regiment before Fredericksburg was nine wounded; at Chancellorsville sixty-three men were placed before hors de combat. At Gettysburg, July 2 & 3, its losses were forty-one ment. During the latter part of the year, it took an important part in many skirmishes with a total loss of forty-one men. During the year 1864, the command enlisted as veterans, received a furlough of thirty days and returning to the front on the years campaign at Ely Ford on 5 May. Its losses for the month was thirty-one killed, 119 wounded and 29 prisoners. An order from the War Department dated 13 June ordered the consolidation of the Third and Fifth, and seven days later, the regiment was mustered out. On 15 October 1864, the Third Infantry reorganized was mustered into service under Lt. Colonel Moses B. Houghton with 879 officers and men. Toward the close of the year, it served in Tennessee and Alabama. It was engaged in Decatur, Alabama October 28-30 and at Murfreesboro, Tennessee from November 30 to December 20. Having performed its duty well, the command was mustered out and discharged at Detroit 10 June 1865. There are two separate listings included here. Some of the names in one list are not in the other so both are included.
