Sixth Michigan Cavalry
The Sixth Michigan Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids granted to Honorable Francis W. Kellogg by the War Department, approved by the Governor. Its recruitment being completed, it was mustered into service of the United States on 13 October 1862 with twelve hundred twenty-nine officers and men on the rolls. This regiment left its rendezvous, fully mounted and equipped, but not armed, on 10th December 1862, in command of Colonel George Gray and under orders to proceed to Washington, they being attached to the Army of the Potomac and subsequently with Sherman’s command. November 1, 1864, this command was with the cavalry troops of the Army of the Shenandoah and lay at Camp Russell, near Winchester, VA, making preparations to go into winter quarters, engaged in the usual picket duty and in scouting until 27 February 1865 when it formed a part in the force with which General Sheridan made his movement against General Early’s army and on the rebel communications in the direction of Gordonsville and Richmond, and at that date moved with the cavalry troops toward Staunton. On 8th March, the regiment participated in an engagement with a part of the rebel cavalry under General Rosser near Louisa courthouse, assisted in routing it and in capturing the town in which a great amount of property was stored including the railroad depot with rolling stock and telegraph office. It also helped in taking up the railroad track, destroying the railroad property on the line of the Lynchberg and Gordonsville railroad, and the destruction of the locks, aqueducts and mills on the line of the James river canal. The regiment having reached White House Landing, 19th March, in time to take part in the final battles of the Potomac, soon after, took positions on the left of the line of that army; on the 13th, the regiment became engaged with the rebel army and assisted in driving them within their works at Five Forks. After the surrender of Lee, the rebel General Pickett, who was taken prisoner in one of the engagements, spoke of a charge made by this regiment, which he witnessed, as being the bravest he had ever seen. After Lee’s surrender, this regiment moved to Petersburg, VA and made an expedition into North Carolina; thence marched via Petersburg, VA and Richmond to Washington and on May 23, took part in the review of the Army of the Potomac. It was then ordered west to Fort Leavenworth and from there across the plains to Fort Laramie and after spending many months fighting the Indians and on the 24th of September, most of the regiment were mustered out at Fort Leavenworth, while those whose enlistments did not expire until 1 Feb 1866 were transferred to the First Michigan Cavalry. |
