Dewey Blocksma
Another member whole loss was sudden blow to the members of the Club was Dewey Blocksma. Mr. Blocksma died Oct. 3, 1937 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident only a few days before his death.
Mr. Blocksma was one of the most outstanding members of Grand Rapids civic and cultural life, giving of his time and energy in every worth while cause. He was born here in 1884, and attended public schools and Central high school from which he graduated in 1903. Following graduation he was identified with the A. Himes Coal Co., until he, with Glenn C. Mason, took over Breen and Halliday Fuel Co., about 20 years ago.
In addition to being president and general manager for the Breen and Halliday Co., he was president of the City Coal and Coke Co., and the Century Fuel and Materials Co., and vice-president of the Grand Rapids Association of Commerce.
Mr.. Blocksma was very active in the YMAC and energetic in all its affairs He was also a very active member in all Community Chest campaigns, and elder in the LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church and a member of the Gideons. He also held membership in the Grand Rapids Rotary Club, the Cascade Hills Country Club and the Peninsular Club. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Richard Boelkins, two sons, Ralph and Douglas, and two sisters, Mrs. Gilbert L. Daane and Mrs. Milo Whims.
