8/1944 - Joseph E. Bureau
Many Peninsular Club members of long standing learned with regret of the recent death in Detroit, of Joseph E. Bureau, 65, one-time manager of the Peninsular Club.
During the five years from 1909 to 1914 that Mr. Bureau served as manager of the Peninsular Club, Langford H. Griffin, present manager, was associated with him as assistant. Mr. Griffin recalls that their pleasant association provided the opportunity for his gaining much of his early experience in club management business.
A native of Montreal, Mr. Bureau, who was of French descent, came to the Peninsular Club during the last five years the club occupied the old building which was located on the present Pen Club building site. He left Grand Rapids in 1914, just before the present Peninsular Club building was erected.
He had many friends among veteran members of the club and is well and favorably remembered by many of the older employees of the club.
Since leaving Grand Rapids, Mr. Bureau had been manager of the Oakland Hills Country club of Birmingham and the Red Run Golf Club. In recent years he had been associated with the Detroit Golf club from which he was on leave of absence at the time of his death on July 19, He is survived by the widow, Leota, and three brothers who reside in Montreal.
