SOLDIER DIED IN FRANCE – Sgt. Arthur D. DeVries

Sergt. Arthur D. DeVries, member of Company M, 126^th Infantry, son of Mrs. N. F. DeVries, 520 Jefferson avenue, SE, and Dr. U. DeVries, 1069 Bridge street, NW, formerly living at the corner of Grandville avenue and Graham street, was killed in France August. Age 18 years.

Messages received from Acting Adjutant General Harris by the parents announce that he gave his life on the altar of his country while fighting in France August 2^nd.

DeVries enlisted in the Grand Rapids battalion, 32^nd Regiment, Michigan National guard, in June, 1916. He served during the border trouble in Mexico. When he returned he entered the employ of the Pere Marquette railroad and worked in the shops until he answered President Wilson’s call in the world war. He went to Grayling, where the Michigan troops were mobilized, and was promoted to corporal while encamped there. He went overseas with the 126^th Infantry last April. He was a pupil of the 10^th grade of the Catholic high school at the time of his enlistment.
