Death of Cornelius Young
(Grandville Avenue Record – 27 Feb 1914, Pg. 4)
Cornelius De Young, aged 69 years, father of Adrian De Young, alderman from the Twelfth ward, and a resident of Grand Rapids for almost half a century, died Monday last at his home, 643 Logan street, S. E., following an illness of only two days from pneumonia.
The deceased was one of the best known church men among the Hollanders. He had been elder of the Third Reformed church for twenty years and was the first president of the Barnabas Benevolent society. He was one of the primary factors in its organization twenty years ago.
Mr. De Young was a pioneer, coming from the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, where he was born, 48 years ago, settling at first in Zeeland, Michigan. He remained there only about six months and came directly to this city. He had lived on Logan about 46 years, first residing near Lagrave avenue, then just east of College avenue, and for the past 40 years had lived in the house in which he died.
Mr. De Young had been employed by the National Biscuit company for 36 years, and during that time had probably lost no more than 10 days from sickness. He was foreman of the mixing room of the concern. He was forced to give up his work about two weeks ago on account of a complication of diseases, but had been about his home until Friday, when pneumonia set in.
Besides the widow and Alderman De Young, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Cornelius Braam, Mrs. Frank Flynn, Mrs. Andrew Den Hollander and Miss Nellie De Young, and three sons, John, James and Neil De Young, a popular vocalist, all of this city.
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Third Reformed church. Interment in Oakhill cemetery.
