Obituary of Mrs. Lucretia Edgerton
In this city, on the 12th inst. at the residence of Rev. J. Ballard, Mrs.
Lucretia Edgerton, in the 67th years of her age.
The deceased was born in Bennington, Vermont, and moved to Grand Rapids with
family friends in the year 1838. She united with the church in Bennington in the
year 1831, of which she was an exemplary and consistent member till her removal
to this city. Being unusually retiring in her disposition, she was not generally
known, but her intimate friends knew and appreciated her worth. She had an
uncommon knowledge of human nature and was very skillful in reading character.
Possessing an unusually sound and discriminate judgment, her counsels were
highly valued by her near friends. During her last sickness, which was quite
protracted, she exhibited the most unexampled patience, and seemed more anxious
about making trouble for her friends than to have her own wants supplied. She
was quite as willing to depart as to recover, and would often say, as she was so
far on the downhill of life, that perhaps she might as well go then as ever. She
had great reluctance against living to be a burthen to her friends. Her mind was
clear to the very last, and on the morning of her departure, she spoke of the
brightness of the sun and the sweet singing of the birds, and then exclaimed,
"O, how good the Lord is; all my days He has crowned with His Love;" and after
having sent messages of love to some of the absent members of the family, she
sweetly fell asleep; we trust, in Jesus. What is the deep, deep loss of her
friends, we believe, is her unspeakable gain.
