Death of Fred Gilner
(Grandville Avenue Record, 27 Nov 1914, Pg. 1)
Another pioneer of Grandville Avenue has passed to the home beyond, a pioneer of Grand
Rapids. Fred Gilner, of 929 Grandville Avenue, aged 71 years, died at his
late home Monday.
The deceased was of German parentage, born in 1842. He came to this country with
his wife in the early sixties, settling at once in Kent county. He since has
been a prominent contractor and has figured in many of the city’s development
activities.
He retired from active business about two years ago, building a most palatial home at
929, where he enjoyed the fruits of his labors. He will be missed, for he was so often found on the front lawn or porch fixing up little things to make the home more attractive.
He was a prominent member of the German Lutheran church. He is survived by
his widow, two sons and five daughters: Frederick C., Louis W., Sofie M.,
Caroline A., Mrs. E. Knapp, Mrs. W. Middlestadt, of this city, and Mrs. W. W.
Anderson, of Ann Arbor, a brother, Louis Gilner, and a sister, Mrs. J. Hoffert.
A private funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, at the residence, burial taking
place in Oak Hill cemetery.
